Following Wednesday’s showcase, Third Man Records will host the grand opening reception for their installation BLUEPRINTS, an exploration of Paramount Records and the birth of American Music as well as a Third Man Records pop-up shop. BLUEPRINTS will be located in Billy Reid’s Austin retail space at 1122 W. 6th St. The installation serves as a tribute to the music, musicians, and record label that changed the sonic landscape of our country in the early 20th century, and encourages visitors to learn about Paramount Records and interact with the Grammy winning “Cabinet of Wonder” box sets released by Third Man and Revenant Records over the past two years. The grand opening will feature the musical stylings of Up Around The Sun (Tim Kerr and Jerry Hagins), as well as food, drink and merriment and the opportunity to create your own Spirit-o-graph (shadow silhouette!) with Bryce McCloud, the Nashville artist responsible for much of the stunning design of The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records box sets. One of the masterminds behind the Paramount reissues and Revenant Records founder, Dean Blackwood, will also be at the event to discuss the project and answer questions.

BLUEPRINTS will be open to the public from March 12th through May. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10-7, Sunday 12-6. Exclusive records and merchandise will be available the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of SXSW, with additional retail surprises and events to follow throughout the life of the installation. THIRD MAN BOOKS TO PUBLISH THE TRUTH IS WE ARE PERFECT BY JANAKA STUCKY

AVAILABLE APRIL 14

Janaka Stucky
Janaka Stucky

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2015. NASHVILLE, TN –– Third Man Books is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of The Truth Is We Are Perfect (April 14, distributed by Consortium; $14.95, ISBN 978-0-9913361-1-1), the debut full-length collection of poems by Janaka Stucky and TMB’s first single-author title.

“Stucky’s verse has the power of the best East European poets — some of his poems seem to be perfect, magnificent, and instantly anthologizable. He is a forceful, cogent, incisive phrase-maker.” – Bill Knott

Janaka Stucky is the publisher of Black Ocean as well as the annual poetry journal, Handsome. He is the author of two chapbooks: Your Name Is The Only Freedom, and The World Will Deny It For You. His poems have appeared in such journals as Denver Quarterly, Fence and North American Review, and his articles have been published by The Huffington Post and The Poetry Foundation. He is a two-time National Haiku Champion and in 2010 he was voted “Boston’s Best Poet” in The Boston Phoenix.

Stucky will go on a 30-city national tour to promote the book, including dates at the AWP Conference in Minneapolis, Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City, and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

“When Third Man Books released our first literary publication Language Lessons: Volume I, the anthology included, naturally, an ex-mortician named Janaka Stucky alongside writers who moonlighted as bartenders, taco chefs, and software developers, or were Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalists such as C.D. Wright, Adrian Matejka, and Dale Ray Phillips, or were punk rock progenitors like Richard Hell and Tav Falco,” said Third Man Books editor Chet Weise. “For Third Man Records and Third Man Books, poetry is another genre of music, and that Janaka Stucky is one of our favorite writers should be no surprise.”

Check out Janaka Stucky reading his poem “The Art of Loss Is A Lost Art” recorded live and straight to 7” vinyl via Third Man Record’s Record Booth.

Third Man Records was founded by Jack White in 2001. Third Man Records’ physical location opened in Nashville in 2009 and quickly evolved from a music label into a complete in-house hub for art-making and dream-chasing. Third Man’s mission is to support the creation and distribution of any and every form of expression, from music to poetry, comedy to film. In this spirit, Third Man Books was established in 2014 to further explore the music of language.

Third Man Books has previously published Language Lessons: Volume I, a vinyl record and print box set anthology. Forthcoming titles include Pain: The Board Game by Sampson Starkweather and Hidden Water by Frank Stanford (special edition, in collaboration with Copper Canyon Press).

Parquet Courts: Live at Third Man Records

Third Man Records is excited to announce the March 3rd release of Parquet Courts: Live At Third Man Record – the latest addition to the Live At Third Man series.

Parquet Courts brought a sweltering performance to the hallowed grounds of Third Man’s Blue Room onJune 5th of last year – and very fortunately, TMR was able to lovingly capture it with their one-of-a-kind, direct-to-acetate recording process. The set included a dynamic selection of songs from last year’s critically acclaimed album Sunbathing Animals, as well as the 2013 EP, Tally All The Things That You Broke. The end result? A record that will have your feet stompin’ and body rockin’ as soon as the needle hits. Track listing included below for your perusal.

2. Bodies
3. Black & White
4. Vienna II

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: VAULT PACKAGE #23

Vault #23
Vault #23

As 2015 marks ten years since the release of the White Stripes’ Get Behind Me Satan album and tour, Third Man Records is proud to use that as the focus of its 23rd Vault package. Completely dedicated to the White Stripes and highlighting their time in South America in 2005, this release should leave fans beyond satisfied.

Anchoring the box is the double LP Under Amazonian Lights recorded live in Manaus, Brazil on June 1st, 2005. Described by the local press as “deliciously irresponsible” and the first rock concert ever at the grand Teatro Amazonas Opera House, the performance that night was nothing short of amazing. Featuring a sublime cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lovesick Blues”, two versions (one electric, one acoustic) of “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known,” two versions of “Passive Manipulation” (both sublime), a snippet of Howlin Wolf’s “I Asked For Water” and ample marimba on “The Nurse” and what you have is one of the most iconic and memorable shows the White Stripes ever played. Both LPs will be pressed on blood red vinyl with stark black wisps.

So it should come as no surprise that we’d pair this LP with DVD footage from that performance. Words do not ably describe the beauty of the Teatro Amazonas nor the furor riled up by the White Stripes appearance. Not only was there fear that the amplification of the band would cause the plaster in the building to crack and possible fall and injure attendees, but out of custom/fear/lord-knows-what the crowd remained seated until being explicitly asked to stand from the stage by Jack White himself. If that wasn’t enough, during the show Jack and Meg ventured outside the venue to play an entirely unamplified version of “We Are Going to Be Friends” for the assembled multitude of fans unable to purchase tickets and watching the performance via closed-circuit feed. The resultant melee was arguably a riot and was lovingly captured by the film crew documenting that evening’s importance.  All together what it makes is one of the best true rock and roll moments of the past decade. Heck, Jack White even got married that day.

The accompanying 7” single is a perfect example of the material the Vault was explicitly created to release. “Let You Down” is a solo recording done by Jack White roundabout the year 2000. Featuring both electric guitar and electric bass, the true meat here is the multi-tracked four-part harmony voiced by White throughout the song. The entirety of lyrics here “No I’m never, no I’m never, no I’m never gonna let you down now” would be repurposed into the White Stripes 2005 recording “The Nurse” and the overall germination illustrated here is devilishly insightful. The b-side “Ain’t No Sweeter Than Rita Blues” is a quintessential White Stripes guitar/drums outtake instrumental that was recorded during the tracking of Get Behind Me Satan and subsequently unused and forgotten for the past ten years. Dare we say it’s everything you hope it would be, pressed on wonderful white vinyl and ready for your love.

If that was not enough (and really, it should be) Third Man has decided to throw caution to the wind and absolutely overload this package with more extras than any sane record label would ever consider. We’ve poked the Grammy Award-winning designer Rob Jones to put together a collection of newly designed postcards celebrating the White Stripes performances in Brazil in 2005. In one word…stunning. Rob was gracious enough to throw in a badass death head monkey design that was so tasty we had to turn it into substantive enamel pin. A silk-screened White Stripes poster with some super-secret hidden glow in the dark graphics was a no-brainer. If you’re wondering where you’ll keep this vast assortment of sundries, worry you no longer…a soft touch, telescoping box with the same devilish death head monkey graphic on the cover will become a new member in Vault households worldwide. Join the family now.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: DANNY KROHA “ANGELS WATCHING OVER ME”

Angels Watching Over Me
Angels Watching Over Me

“I was very reluctant to put this stuff out because there’s a ton of rootsy cornballs out there doing this kind of stuff and all of them play guitar way better than me. But I think I have something here that doesn’t really sound like anything else. The numbers that bounce really bounce. The numbers that drone really drone. I’m excited about this.” – Danny Kroha

We are too! The founding member of THE GORIES tried his hand at the banjo, dulcimer, diddley bow, washtub bass, jug and mouth organ for his first release under his own name, Angels Watching Over Me, and the result is a distinct step forward for gospel and folk. Kroha has consistently pushed himself to reinvention, and has influenced countless imitators and poseurs along the way. His guitar work with Rocket 455 is the most quintessentially “Detroit” rock and roll this side of the MC5. The record was recorded in a 100-year-old, vacant house in Detroit, and features songs popularized by the likes of Son House, I.D. Stamper, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Brother Will Hairston. This is a decidedly different Danny Kroha than we’ve seen in his past projects with Demolition Doll Rods and Danny and the Darleans, and we have to say… we like him. With Angels Watching Over Me, he firmly establishes himself as one of the pre-eminent practitioners of a genre we hold so dear.

The record will be available for pre-order mid-January with an official release date of January 27th. Check out a sneak peak of the song “Run Little Children,” the only Kroha original on the record, below.

https://soundcloud.com/thirdmanrecords/danny-kroha-run-little-children-off-angels-watching-over-me

“I was sitting by a pond in a park in Rochester, New York, playing my diddley bow, and this one came to me. Son House lived in that town for some years; I like to think he was smiling on me.” – Danny Kroha

THIRD MAN RECORDS: LILLIE MAE RISCHE BLUE SERIES 7″ AVAILABLE DECEMBER 9

Lillie Mae Rische
Lillie Mae Rische

Closing out an exceptional year at Third Man Records is a release that’s pretty near and dear to us. It should come as no surprise to the TMR faithful that Lillie Mae Rische is a complete bad-ass and an all-around powerhouse of melody. She first joined the TMR family a little over two years ago and ever since – whether onstage with Jack White and his band or in the studio – she’s been, how you say, delivering us from evil with fiddle playing so stupefying as to propel listeners into the jaws of heavenly awe. Feel me on this, y’all?

Here we have Lillie Mae Rische center stage. Her contribution to our Blue Series showcases two original songs, charming and plaintive, with the B-side hitting us with a story of hearts on the road, having to reconcile distance and desire. Meanwhile, the A-side is a gentle yet stern anthem about the sweet and sour circumstances of being alone. All in a voice that’s sweeter than peach brandy.

Joining her are some longtime Third Man contributors Carl Broemel, Dominic Davis, Jack Lawrence, and local drum god, Whip Triplet.

The 7” inch vinyl is now available for pre-order and we be made available in fine record stores worldwide on December 9th.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS VAULT PACKAGE #22

Vault Package #22
Vault Package #22

On June 14th of this year, Jack White unleashed arguably the single best performance in the 13 year history of the Bonnaroo festival.

In an expansive field in Manchester, TN, filled with approximately 70,000 fans, White let loose a tour-de-force, 26-song, two-hour and forty-five minute career-spanning set. From White Stripes songs like “Hotel Yorba” and “Icky Thump” to Raconteurs numbers such as “Top Yourself” and “Steady, As She Goes” through “Blue Blood Blues” by the Dead Weather…not to mention a wide selection of his solo material and covers of two surf rock classics “Pipeline” by the Chantays and “Misirlou” by Dick Dale. And Led Zeppelin’s “The Lemon Song”? He did that too.

In order to celebrate a show of such historical heft, Third Man Records has decided to dedicate the entirety of it’s 22nd Vault package to this performance.

Three vinyl LPs (white, blue and black), housed in a soft-touch, telescoping box, topped off with a lenticular television on the cover…this is by far the most ambitious Vault package yet. The audio has been mixed by Third Man’s in house engineer, three time Grammy Award-winner Vance Powell and stands as a marked improvement over the on-the-fly board mix heard in webcasts, YouTube uploads and shady downloads.

In addition, there will be a DVD of the FULL performance, re-edited from the original raw footage by Brad Holland (filmmaker extraordinaire), for a truly memorable visual document of the evening.

We could’ve stopped there…but anything worth doing is worth overdoing, right?

Also included in the package will be four high-quality 8×10 photographs from the evening shot by David Swanson. Suitable for framing, timeless, these will increase the value of your home tenfold.

(said to the guys in production) “Is that all? NO?!?!? Are you kidding me? What else could we offer?”

Apparently we’ve lost our minds and gone as for to include a customized Jack White patch, a replica backstage pass sticker AND a poster in this beast of a package.

You want a custom-designed USB with super-secret extra added bonus materials too? Have at it.

If this package doesn’t make you happy…nothing will.

Subscriptions are open now, get yours in before the October 31st deadline.

Album Captures Burr’s 2011 Carnegie Hall Performance

Bill Burr: Live at Andrew’s House

Comedian Bill Burr will release the vinyl album, Live From Andrew’s House, recorded live at Burr’s legendary 2011 Carnegie Hall performance, on September 30, 2014 from Third Man Records. The LP will be available for pre-sale on September 16 at http://thirdmanstore.com, and on sale everywhere records are sold on September 30.

“As a stand-up comedian, to get to perform at Carnegie Hall is a milestone; so when I found out that I got that gig I knew I wanted to document the performance,” stated Burr. “Most of the material on this album is the same material that eventually became the special You People Are All The Same and I didn’t want to screw over people by putting out two DVD’s with similar material. So this is a special release of that performance that will be on vinyl only.”

Live At Andrew’s House was recorded at Carnegie Hall on November 11, 2011, four months before Burr taped his third hour-long special, You People Are All The Same, on March 3, 2012. The album gives fans the opportunity to experience a landmark performance in Burr’s career and the early workings of a set that became Burr’s critically-acclaimed third special.

Bill Burr is one of the top comedic voices of his generation achieving success in TV and film as well as the live stage. Selling out theaters internationally, Burr is a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon and his Monday Morning Podcast is one of the most downloaded comedy podcasts on iTunes. Burr’s fourth hour-long comedy special, I’m Sorry You Feel That Way, will premiere December 5on Netflix. He will be seen alongside Kevin Costner in the upcoming film Black and White, and earlier this year he was seen alongside Elizabeth Banks in the film Walk of Shame. Burr guest starred in several episodes of Kroll Show on Comedy Central, was seen in the Paul Feig film, The Heat, alongside Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and in the Al Pacino and Christopher Walken film Stand Up Guys. He received raves for his recurring role as “Kuby” on the hit AMC-TV show, Breaking Bad, and guest starred on Fox TV’s New Girl. His third hour-long special, You People Are All The Same, is available for download exclusively through his website and streaming on Netflix; his two critically acclaimed hour Comedy Central specials are available on Netflix and DVD. For more visit www.BillBurr.com and follow Burr on Twitter – @BillBurr.
