VAMPIRE WEEKEND: FATHER OF THE BRIDE DEBUTS AT #1

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

FATHER OF THE BRIDE DEBUTS AT #1

Biggest Sales Week for a Rock Band in 2019

Top Selling Vinyl of 2019

North American Tour Begins This Weekend

A veritable feast of music
—Billboard

One of the most ~important~ bands of the 21st century… With Father of the Bride, their fourth album, the group has expanded itself and the conception of what a band can be.
—GQ

The band’s long-awaited fourth album also just became the frontrunner for best album of 2019
—New York (Vulture)

Sonically eclectic and lyrically profound… the indie-rock band’s most affecting material to date.
—People

A sheer delight in craft and sound.
—Rolling Stone

Vampire Weekend returns as the best indie band of their generation… the album proves that they’re still better than most, if not all, of the other artists of that era… More important, the band has a genius-level songwriter in Koenig
—USA Today

An almost universally radiant offering… an album that could soundtrack an afternoon picnic or be used as fodder for a doctorate thesis on songwriting. It’s a beautifully realized cipher in an age of unsatisfying answers.
—Variety

Vampire Weekend’s rapturously received pre-release run of events—including multiple TV appearances, and a New York State Tour including a surprise pop-up performance in Washington Square Park drawing thousands of fans and ending in a 56-song all-day musical marathon–has yielded its reward: the band’s long-awaited fourth album Father of the Bride, released May 3rd on Spring Snow/Columbia Records, has entered the U.S. chart at #1.

The third Vampire Weekend album in a row to reach #1 on the Billboard 200, Father of the Bride’s first week tally of 138,000 is both the year’s biggest sales week for a rock act and the highest single week sales of the Grammy-winning band’s career. Nearly 20,000 of the album’s first week sales were vinyl, putting the LP at #1 on the vinyl chart by a large margin as well as the top selling vinyl of the year—not to mention #1 debuts on the Album Sales and Internet Sales charts. The album is available to purchase or stream here.    Father of the Bride’s release was also supported by a Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon appearance featuring special guests Haim that resulted in a rare two songs airing over two consecutive weeks (the second song will air this Friday, May 17) and a Jimmy KimmelLive performance hailed by Stereogum as “further evidence that the new songs will sound great when the band hits the road this summer.”

The Father of the Bride North American Tour begins the weekend of May 16-19 with a headlining set at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The band’s U.S. dates currently extend through an October 8-9 two-night stand at Red Rocks in Colorado, and include Vampire Weekend’s most ambitious hometown date ever: a September 6th in-the-round performance for 18,000 fans at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Vampire Weekend: New Video for “Harmony Hall” Out Now

Vampire Weekend: New Video for “Harmony Hall” Out Now

Vampire Weekend’s new video for “Harmony Hall,” the first single from their upcoming fourth album, Father of the Bride, is out now and can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlkTVMMkCP4 . The video was directed by Emmett Malloy, director of previous Vampire Weekend videos “Giving Up The Gun” and “Holiday”.

Father of the Bride remains slated for a spring release on Columbia Records.

The critics on “Harmony Hall”:

On “Harmony Hall,” Ezra Koenig and his bandmates spend a joyful five minutes and nine seconds summoning a springtime mood, with cheery piano and sweet guitar licks that allude to their early sound while also introducing a bright new energy. – ROLLING STONE

“Harmony Hall,” among the first great thrills of 2019 pop – THE ATLANTIC

Euphoric…  “Harmony Hall” sprawls out with lush symphonies, communal vibes aplenty. It begins with gentle acoustic guitar harmonics and some of the plainest, most direct lyrics Koenig has ever sung… they sound, somehow, completely new. – BILLBOARD

A fine return to form, and feels as bright and fresh as spring… “Harmony Hall” is sweet and nimble, a welcome return to form for a group that always seemed to float atop the currents of pop and rock… But his often-cryptic lyrics find balance with a tune that is buoyant with rich guitar and piano riffing that will make old-school fans happy. It may still be winter, but spring is already in the air with the band back in the mix.  – TIME

“Harmony Hall” takes on the lusciousness of a warm spring morning with frantic guitar strumming and coordinated piano playing…. “Harmony Hall” shows that Vampire Weekend can succeed when faced with adversity and the passage of time, which can be fatal for some bands, but for them, it just adds fuel to their sound. – CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

We Are So Lucky That Vampire Weekend Are Back… The New York band is and always has been very good. Period… They’ve morphed into a band that can please just about anybody.  – NOISEY

Vampire Weekend songs tend to be multilayered creations: refusing to be confined by genre, refracting big-picture epiphanies through personal experience…You could not mistake this song for anyone else….. “Harmony Hall” is a vibrant romp that seamlessly blends folksy fingerstyle guitar, ’90s rave music, a gospel choir, baroque piano, and the Grateful Dead. There are so many moving parts, but it scans as fun, danceable pop music, albeit with a melancholy streak…. As urgent manifestos go, it’s absolutely delightful. – STEREOGUM

In other news, congratulations are due to Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings on the band’s eponymous debut album being certified Platinum by the RIAA for U.S. sales in excess of 1,000,000.

Vampire Weekend was released January 29th, 2008 by XL, and debuted at #17 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. In addition to being newly certified Platinum in the U.S., the album has previously been certified Platinum by the BPI in the UK, and Gold by Music Canada and ARIA in Australia.

The first band to grace the cover of SPIN magazine before an album was even released, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Chris Tomson and former member Rostam Batmanglij met in 2005 at Columbia University in New York City.  “Even without an album, Vampire Weekend has made one of the year’s most impressive debuts,” said The New York Times of the band’s earliest recordings.

The accolades continued through the album’s release, as Vampire Weekend appeared on 2008 Top 10 lists of Time, NPR, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Pitchfork and countless others, as well as winning the NME award for “Best New American Indie/Alternative Band.” The band also made its first of three appearances on Saturday Night Live, as well as debut performances on  The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Since their debut, Vampire Weekend have released two additional albums, both of which debuted at #1 and have been certified Gold in the U.S.: 2010’s GRAMMY-nominated Contra, and 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City, which won that year’s GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album.
