Iggy and the Stooges have just unveiled “Burn,” the first full taste of the all-new studio album, Ready To Die, out April 30 on Fat Possum.

The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the Iggy and the Stooges logo–the immortal 1973 proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power–Ready To Die finds Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott “Rock Action” Asheton reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time in 40 years, with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass. “Burn” opens the record in suitable fashion, doing the legacy of its predecessor proud with guitar pyrotechnics recalling those halcyon opening salvos of “Search & Destroy,” a sublime vocal paean to the goddess of beauty, and a relentless rhythmic thud that anchors and propels the proceedings.

Iggy and the Stooges have unveiled the initial coordinates of the Ready To Die live assault: On March 13 in Austin, Texas, Iggy and the Stooges will burn a swath through the annual SXSW Festival, with a one-off show at House of Vans at the Mohawk presented by Fat Possum. The Austin show will be the public’s first chance to hear any of Ready To Die played live–and U.S. fans’ last chance to see Iggy and the Stooges before they return to American stages this summer following a slew of overseas dates.

“Burn” can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/fatpossum/iggy-and-the-stooges-burn/.

http://postalservicemusic.net/

http://www.subpop.com/

With over a dozen shows and counting already sold out–including the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA and New York’s Barclays Center Arena where second dates have been added by popular demand–The Postal Service has announced another series of additions to the tour commemorating the April 9 release of its Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) on Sub Pop.

The new dates on The Postal Service’s first headline tour in decade include stops in Austin TX, Pomona CA, Kansas City MO, at St. Paul MN, as well as an appearance at the Free Press Fest in Houston TX. Dates that have already completely sold out–in addition to the aforementioned first nights in New York and Berkeley–now include London, Manchester, Reno NV, Davis CA, San Luis Obispo CA, Boise ID, Orlando FL, Las Vegas, Detroit and more on the way.

The Postal Service 10th anniversary tour will reunite Postal Service principals Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello with Jenny Lewis (Jenny & Johnny, Rilo Kiley), who appeared on the original album and played with the band on its 2003 dates. Lewis also sings on the two new songs on Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition). Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds, Bright Eyes) rounds out the 2013 touring lineup.

Meanwhile, rare Postal Service audition footage dating back to 2002 has been unearthed and can finally be viewed at www.funnyordie.com. The never before seen tryouts include a genre-defying group of hopefuls ranging from Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses and Nate Mendel of Foo Fighters to Moby, Aimee Mann and others all vying for a the coveted Postal Service lead singer gig–and each doing his or her level best not to choke in the presence of Tamborello and Sub Pop A&R.

The Postal Service and Sub Pop Records’ pre-order for Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) is live now, with configurations including a limited 3-LP edition on red, clear and white vinyl available through subpop.com and postalservicemusic.net. All pre-orders will immediately receive a download of the previously unreleased single “A Tattered Line of String.”

Give Up was certified platinum last year just shy of 10 years from its original February 9, 2003 release. Led by the single “Such Great Heights,” the landmark album is, after Nirvana’s Bleach, the second-biggest selling album in Sub Pop’s nearly 25-year history.

Third Man Records is as excited as they are proud to announce a once in a lifetime pairing of two of modern music’s leading ladies, as Brittany Howard and Ruby Amanfu join forces for the ”I Wonder” b/w  ”When My Man Comes Home” Single (TMR 201).

The new single features the Grammy-nominated Alabama Shakes frontwoman teaming up with the Third Man family member who first caught our ears on Jack White’s “Love Interruption” for two reinterpretations of boldly contrasting source material: Side A features their take on ”I Wonder,” originally performed by Rodriguez, subject of the Oscar-winning Searching For Sugar Man, while side B finds Howard also picking up her acoustic guitar as the two sing their version of “When My Man Comes Home,” originally recorded by Memphis Minnie, the immortal composer of “When The Levee Breaks” among others.

The single also features Dominic Davis on electric and upright bass, Daru Jones on drums, Cory Younts on piano, Ikey Owens on keys and Hammond B3 and Fats Kaplin on electric guitar, lap steel and mandolin.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS’ 15th ALBUM ACHIEVES MAJOR GLOBAL SUCCESS AS THE FIRST RELEASE BY  CAVE’S OWN BAD SEED LABEL VIA KOBALT

(March 1, 2013) – A major hit out of the starting gate – Nick Cave & The Bad SeedsPush The Sky Away (Bad Seed Ltd. via KLS), has debuted at the tops of international album charts with six No.1 positions — Australia (#1), Austria (#1), Belgium (#1), Holland (#1), New Zealand (#1), Portugal (#1). It also went Top 3 in the UK (#3), Germany (#2), Greece (#2), Norway (#2), Finland (#3), Poland (#2), and Ireland (#3). In North America, the album made impressive debuts in Canada (#20) and on The Billboard 200 (#29), the band’s highest ever chart placing in the U.S.

As the must-have alternative record of this year, in the U.S. the critically-acclaimed album also went straight to #1 on Billboard’s Current Alternative Chart as well as #1 on Billboard’s Indy/Small Chains and #1 LP/Vinyl Albums Charts. First week U.S. sales of the album are up 50% on the band’s prior two album releases. In Cave’s original home territory of Australia, Push The Sky Awayhas become Nick Cave’s first-ever No. 1, and in the U.K. the release experienced his highest chart placing and highest week one sales ever.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds performed the album in its entirety at intimate shows in London, Paris, Berlin and LA with the accompaniment of strings and local children’s choirs from each city. The Los Angeles show held Feb. 21 at Fonda Theatre was webcast globally by Lovelive in partnership with Rockfeedback and YouTube and was viewed by more than 100,000 people.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds kick off their world tour starting this week with three sold out nights at the Sydney Opera House. On March 12, Cave will be at SXSW for a special appearance in conversation with Larry Ratso Sloman and on March 13 the band will appear at Stubb’s in Austin for NPR Music’s SXSW showcase followed by three sold-out nights at New York City’s Beacon Theater later in the month. The U.S. run will culminate with an appearance at Coachella in April where  Cave will perform with The Bad Seeds as well as with Grinderman. See list of North American tour dates below.

Critics worldwide have hailed the record as an instant classic. Below are excerpts from recent album reviews:

“Push the Sky Away may be broken into nine pieces, but the whole is paced like one magnificent 43-minute Nick Cave song: tense and mysterious at first, then increasingly full-blooded and lovely” – NPR

“…predictably unpredictable in “Push The Sky Away” … an unshakeable feeling and a belief that rock ‘n’ roll gets you right down to your soul” – LOS ANGELES TIMES

“His excellent new album is full of cinematic detail and gorgeously dark sonic dread”- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, THE MUST LIST

“Push the Sky Away” is yet another gem in a long string of fiercely literate offerings from the poet laureate of post-punk.” – ASSOCIATED PRESS

“Push the Sky Away presents an uncharacteristically weightless, eerily atmospheric sound; we have foggy reveries built upon ominously rumbling bass lines, twitchy rhythmic tics, and hushed-voice intimations…” – PITCHFORK

“the fundamental power of his music has been surprisingly steady for decades now. And so Push The Sky Away is merely one more very good album in a long, long string of them.” – STEREOGUM – ALBUM OF THE WEEK

“Saint Nick has again given us vigorous spiritual sanctuary. We should thusly appreciate every note, every word, as if we were the hungry flock and it were the thousand loaves.”– FILTER [USA]

“Push the Sky Away” merges the erotic and the ominous in a cocoon of electronic loops, sparse keyboards, murmured voices, and post-3 a.m. narratives.” – CHICAGO TRIBUNE [USA]

“Guitars don’t riff; they quiver…the perfect setting for Cave’s unnerving narratives of sexual impulse and existential pondering, all witha  pinch of pitch-black humor. From choirboys to convicts everyone can find a dark piece of themselves in Push The Sky Away.” – RELIX

IGGY AND THE STOOGES: READY TO DIE OUT APRIL 30 ON FAT POSSUM RECORDS

Available For Pre-Order At
http://fatpossum.com/products/ready-to-die

“a real fucking group… they also make fucking records. They don”t just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money”–Iggy Pop

Better 40 years later than never: The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the Iggy and the Stooges logo–the immortal proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power–will finally be out April 30, when Fat Possum Records releases the all-new Iggy and the Stooges studio album, Ready To Die.

Ready To Die finds Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott “Rock Action” Asheton reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time since the legendary Raw Power sessions, with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass. The results are the closest thing to a time capsule to 1973–or at least to Iggy”s subsequent efforts with Williamson, including 1977″s Kill City and 1979″s New Values–that rock “n” roll is likely to proffer in this millennium. The new album”s opening one-two of “Burn” and “Sex & Money” pair sublimely blunt and self-explanatory subject matter with back alley razor-blade guitars and a troglodytic rhythmic stomp as intensely single-minded as Iggy”s lyrical statements of intent. Elsewhere on the album, anthems abound in the form of the most dead-on rallying cry for the lower-working-class dispossessed to date–the succinctly and aptly titled “Job”–as well as a title track that mixes a signature Iggy Pop mission statement of angry desperation with guitar pyrotechnics that recall those halcyon opening salvos of “Search & Destroy.”

Just as Iggy exhumed the original Stooges name when he reunited in 2003 with the Asheton brothers, the revival of the Iggy and the Stooges moniker that first appeared on the cover of Raw Power heralded the return of guitarist James Williamson to the fold in 2009, or as Iggy put it then “although “the Stooges” died with Ron Asheton, there is still “Iggy and the Stooges”.” As far as the decision to record and release a new Iggy and the Stooges album for the first time since 1973, Iggy recently commented:

“My motivation in making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal. It”s just a pig-headed fucking thing I have that a real fucking group when they”re an older group they also make fucking records. They don”t just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money…”

The release of ‘Push The Sky Away’ has been met with mass critical acclaim. Critics across the globe are hailing Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ 15th album as among their greatest:

“captivating” THE BOSTON GLOBE

“Along with a special lyrical acuity comes some of the most textured music they’ve yet produced, making this latest album one of the strongest in the band’s discography.”PASTE

“the hair-raising point at which pop sugar gets gleefully poisoned by demon blues.ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“With a stately baritone shaped mostly by cigarettes and a love of Johnny Cash, Cave narrates tales of fleshy temptation as his longtime band the Bad Seeds, play hushed, barbed prairie ballads.” – PLAYBOY MAGAZINE

“Seedy and slick, grandiose and intimate, mysterious and matter-of-fact, Nick Cave’s songs unfold like short stories from bygone eras”  NPR

“an unexpected late-period masterpiece, full of self-reflective humor, and jarring modern lyricism and musicality” CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“Push the Sky Away grabs you and pulls you down into this subterranean journey like only a Bad Seed could do.” PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE

“Push the Sky Away is another exemplary effort from the Bad Seeds, and the moodiest entry into the Nick Cave canon in over a decade ” UNDER THE RADAR

“a gospel-like quietude infuses Push The Sky Away but there’s an emotional intensity at play as well that will leave you flattened. This, ultimately, makes the emotional devastation you experience once the record has spun all the more remarkable. I’m not embarrassed to say that on multiple occasions, Push The Sky Away has left me choking back tears” BLURT

“As always, just beyond Cave’s solemnity, there’s wicked and lovely fun to be had.” SPIN

“this album is a masterwork of spooky and hypnotic minimalism.” ASBURY PARK PRESS

“as engaging as ever” CREATIVE LOAFING

“Push the Sky Away” might just be the most beautiful album ever from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. That doesn’t mean it’s a cheery pop adventure. Rather it’s dark, slow, tense, hushed and thoroughly enveloping. “ LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR

“Nick Cave’s funereal blues is the sound of mirth’s heart stopping. There’s a romanticism inherent in Cave’s repertoire, though, a seductiveness. Even the brightest of days give way to the darkest of nights, and it’s the latter that Cave’s music soundtracks.” – LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

Two of Nashville’s Most Beloved Institutions Join Forces to Offer Cutting-Edge Mix of New and Repertory Cinema

As the perpetually evolving landscape of media production and distribution continues to offer new opportunities for creator and consumer alike, certain aspects of how we experience and appreciate art tend to fall by the wayside. Among the most glaring examples is the notion of cinema as a communal phenomenon – of the theater as a public meeting space to indulge in acts of group-fantasy. As the market for new productions – large and small – becomes increasingly oriented to an era of digital distribution and on-demand home viewing, we lose the richness of discourse associated with sharing an emotional experience with strangers in a darkened room. The collective gasp at a third-act twist; embracing your date in a moment of fright; the heated post-film debate in the theater lobby – these are the sort of exchanges that risk endangered-status as the archetypical cinematic venue moves from the screening room to the living room.

It is with this in mind that Third Man Records has partnered with the Southeast’s flagship arthouse cinema, The Belcourt Theatre, to announce The Light And Sound Machine, a monthly film series to take place on the third Thursday of each month at Third Man’s performance space in downtown Nashville. Screenings are curated and hosted by filmmaker and critic James Cathcart, whose goal is to provide a venue for marginalized cinema, past and present, unlike any other in our city. Focusing on micro-budget productions by emerging directors, groundbreaking experimental film from all eras, and rarely screened repertory classics, each program promises a trove of curiosities for the adventurous film-goer. Presented digitally and on 16mm, the initial season’s eclectic offerings range from Dan Sallitt’s controversial yet tender 2012 feature THE UNSPEAKABLE ACT, to Kidlat Tahimik’s transcultural meditation PERFUMED NIGHTMARE (1977.)

The Light And Sound Machine’s inaugural exhibition will take place February 21st at 7pm, and will feature the bleak anti-comedy BAD FEVER (Dustin Guy Defa, 2012), preceded by the Safdie Bros.’ THE BLACK BALLOON (2012), an acerbic re-imagining of Albert Lamorisse’s classic LE BALLON ROUGE. Admission is $10. Both the director, Dustin Guy Defa, and lead actor, Kentucker Audley, of Bad Fever will be in attendance.

Though programming space is very limited, feature and short film submissions are welcome. Contact: cathcart@thirdmanrecords.com for additional information.

Tickets available for Belcourt members at a discount for $8 via the Belcourt website (www.belcourt.org), non members please purchase via Third Man (http://thirdmanstore.com/tmr-live/tickets/bad-fever-le-ballon-rouge).

BAD FEVER
A nod to the character based inquiries into the American condition that were the hallmark of 1970’s filmmaking, Dustin Guy Defa’s BAD FEVER introduces Eddie (Kentucker Audley), a psychologically fractured loner with delusions of a future in standup comedy. All but anonymous in his daily existence, he disappears into himself as  seamlessly as he does into the film’s rust-laden vistas of middle-America. His monotonous trajectory aches for intervention, which comes in the form of Irene (Eleonore Hendricks), a wayward drifter with a camcorder who subsides by sharing kinky vignettes of herself with an unseen benefactor. As their aimless lives intertwine, they inadvertently become fixtures to each other’s menageries of desperation.

THE BLACK BALLOON
An acerbic re-imagining of Albert Lamorisse’s classic children’s film LE BALLON ROUGE, Josh and Benny Safdie’s THE BLACK BALLOON resets Lamorisse’s traversing non-narrative to modern day New York, where a dislocated (or escaped?), solitary black balloon wanders the city – temporarily interrupting the lives of the everyday city dwellers it meets along the way, including an as-himself appearance by author and raconteur Larry “Ratso” Sloman. Tempered by the music of progressive rock mainstays Gong, THE BLACK BALLOON is both an ode to city life and the interconnected nature of contemporary existence.
