Paul McCartney awarded France’s Legion of Honour by President Francois Hollande

Paul McCartney was in Paris today, Saturday 8th September 2012, to be awarded a prestigious Legion of Honour, the highest decoration in France.

He was promoted to the rank of Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour (the Légion d’honneur) by President Francois Hollande in a private ceremony this morning at the Elysee Palace. President Hollande personally decorated Paul with the insignia of the Legion of Honour himself in front of an audience of Paul’s family and friends.

During the presentation the President praised Paul for his contribution to the arts, not just in France but all over the world.

The award is a huge honor for Paul as the order is usually only conferred to French nationals, chiefly those who have served France in military or civil life. The award was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. Foreign nationals may only receive a distinction of the Legion of Honour in extraordinary circumstances and British recipients of the order in the past have included Queen Elizabeth II, Laurence Olivier, author Graham Greene and war veteran Henry Allingham.

Having kicked off over a year ago with the legendary July 15-16, 2011 doubleheader at New York City’s Yankee Stadium that had 90,000 fans singing along non-stop over the course of two near three-hour performances, and more recently gifted Mexico with a historic free May 10 show drawing 250,000 to Mexico City’s central plaza, The Zocalo, Paul McCartney’s record-breaking On The Run Tour will round out 2012 by returning to North America for four shows: November 11 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis MO, November 14 at Minute Maid Park in Houston TX, November 25 at BC Place in Vancouver BC, and November 28 at Rexall Place in Edmonton AB.

Paul’s November 11 show at the Scottrade Center will be his first St. Louis concert in ten years, his last appearance in the city having been on the 2002 Back In The U.S. Tour, and having previously played St. Louis’ Busch Stadium twice: once on 1993’s New World Tour and in 1966 with The Beatles.

Paul’s November 14 date at Minute Maid Park–his first Houston show in nearly seven years–is preceded by a similarly deep history, his first Houston performance being The Beatles’ 1965 concert at Sam Houston Coliseum. Paul has since visited Houston in 1976 on the Wings Over America tour, in 1993 on the New World Tour, in 2002 on the Back in the US Tour, and most recently on The US Tour in 2005.

November 25 will end Paul’s near 50-year absence from Vancouver, the BC Place show being his first in the city since The Beatles played Empire Stadium in 1964, while November 28 at Rexall Place will be the first Paul McCartney concert ever in Edmonton, yet another On The Run date bringing Paul McCartney to a new locale for the very first time–the latest on a list already including Abu Dhabi, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay and more.

Paul McCartney’s On The Run Tour has played over 30 dates spanning North and South America, the UK and Europe and the United Arab Emirates. The November 2012 dates are Paul’s first in the U.S. and Canada since the summer 2011 run that generated some of the most enthusiastic responses of Paul’s peerless career from audiences and critics alike, including:

“Mr. McCartney is not saying goodbye but touring stadiums and playing marathon concerts. Friday’s set ran two-and-a-half hours, with Mr. McCartney constantly onstage, and it had 35 songs, not counting a few additional excerpts… His concerts now are a gentle reminder of his survival and vitality…  He perseveres, and entertains, by directly reconnecting to his songs across the decades and still having fun.”–THE NEW YORK TIMES

“In recent years, McCartney has opted for sporadic runs of shows rather than full-on, consecutive-date world tours. In turn, he seems to relish the stage all the more when he does play live… ‘I told you we were going to have a good time,’ he said during the encore. It was an offhand comment – but it’s still astonishing to see how much McCartney still cares.”–ROLLING STONE

“Paul hasn’t aged a bit. Nothing about the show was dated at all. Paul’s voice and musicianship were totally intact, his band was excellent, and the clips/images/visuals screening on the stage’s backdrop were widely appealing. The sound at Yankee Stadium was also amazing, and Paul had no problem delivering to the extremely large venue.”–BROOKLYN VEGAN

“Paul reminds people of their fabulous youth. That’s a lot of youth: the crowd was genuinely intergenerational… Changed my life”–THE VILLAGE VOICE

“Thunder and lightning raked across the sky over Comerica Park Sunday night, but it was no match for the fireworks Paul McCartney mustered onstage… his well-honed showmanship and impeccable music filled hearts and minds in the sold-out ballpark… For three hours, we were all fab again”–THE DETROIT NEWS

“At times stirring, at times triumphant, and always irresistibly fun, this was Paul McCartney’s night in Detroit… an evening of musical thrills and rich nostalgia for a spirited crowd of 38,000… A little luck, a little magic, a lot of smiles, even a few tears, as McCartney served up a set that launched with a bright ‘Hello Goodbye’ and wound through nearly half a century of music.”–THE DETROIT FREE PRESS

“The entire night was a thing of beauty. McCartney controlled the stage and the crowd, and he could have played another three hours and people would have stayed.”–THE DETROIT METRO TIMES

“For almost three hours and over three dozen songs Paul McCartney delivered a concert set that only picked up steam as it went along… McCartney wrung new life out of tunes that were were three to four times as old as quite a few of the folks in the audience… made it impossible for anyone to leave feeling like they didn’t get everything they’d hoped for and more”–CHICAGOIST

“Paul McCartney could not just let it be Sunday in the first of two concerts at Wrigley Field. He played for nearly three hours, wringing new rivers of passion from songs he’s played hundreds of times.”–THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“It’s good to have McCartney still out there bashing through shows with this much unbridled spirit. God knows he doesn’t need to be, but he’s still touring because he obviously is still enjoying it — and his joy is infectious.”–THE CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

“There was an undeniable rush watching Paul McCartney playing Wrigley Field on a warm Sunday night in a show that ran over 2.5 hours and included three dozen songs. Paul McCartney may be the world’s greatest living, breathing, original document, a walking, talking fragment of history whose meaning to the lives of millions, and whose place at the fulcrum of pop culture, cannot be overstated. What makes McCartney on stage such a particularly rewarding spectacle is just how much life he injects in his past triumphs”–TIME OUT CHICAGO

“McCartney, a legitimate legend cruised through three hours at Great American Ball Park. His energetic manner that suggested he could have done three more… an inspiring performance… a three-hour triumph.”–THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

“It was the concert of a lifetime. For the thousands of baby boomers in the audience of Paul McCartney’s sold-out show at Great American Ball Park Thursday night, it was the soundtrack of their lives. For their children, it was the songs they grew up listening to with their parents. For their children’s children, it was an adventure”–CINCINNATI METROMIX

“For the better part of his performance last night at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, live images of Paul McCartney were projected onto a pair of towering video screens on each side of the stage… There he was, Paul McCartney – still, after all these years, larger than life… Few things compare to a pop colossus that continues to defy the years to do himself and his revered music proud.”–THE LEXINGTON (KY) HERALD LEADER

ATOMS FOR PEACE: DEBUT SINGLE ‘DEFAULT’ RELEASED TODAY (XL RECORDINGS)

www.atomsforpeace.info

Thom Yorke’s new project, Atoms For Peace, today released debut single ‘Default’. The single – the first ever Atoms For Peace studio recording – is available to download right now via iTunes and available to stream via www.atomsforpeace.info

Thom has just posted the following statement at www.radiohead.com:

You may have heard that I have a new project called Atoms for Peace.

The name comes from some shows of The Eraser that happened a couple of years ago with Mauro, Joey, Nigel and Flea.

We got a big buzz from them and discovered loads of energy from transforming the music from electronic to live, and so afterwards, we carried on for a few days in the studio and decided to make it a loose, on-going thing. Immersed in the area between the two… electronic and live.

The first tune we’d like you hear is Default

A 12″ vinyl version will follow next month and an album will eventually follow that next year.

The debut album from Atoms For Peace is set for release in 2013, also on XL Recordings. The record will feature Thom on vocals, guitars, keys and programming with support from Nigel Godrich (production & programming), Joey Waronker (drums), Mauro Refosco (percussion) and Flea (bass).

10 brand new Mould compositions in the loud melodic pop/rock vein of the recently reissued Sugar catalogue, Silver Age has already been generating enthusiastic pre-release praise, including:

“the legendary former Husker Du and Sugar frontman remains amazingly capable of cranking out arena-size hooks with snarling three-chord authority”–ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“Bob Mould is still cranking out spiky post punk songs that are a s**tload better than many of his younger rivals… we wouldn’t want him any other way.”–FLAVORWIRE

“The Hüsker Dü/Sugar vet drops a blast of hook chiseled guitar noise with rueful lyrics”–ROLLING STONE

BAND OF HORSES: “Knock Knock” VIDEO LIVE NOW

MIRAGE ROCK OUT SEPTEMBER 18 ON BROWN/COLUMBIA

ALL iTUNES PURCHASES TO RECEIVE iTUNES LP VERSION WITH EXCLUSIVE IN-STUDIO VIDEOS, MORE

VIDEO SAMPLES, ADDITIONAL CONTENT AVAILABLE AT www.bandofhorses.com

In the wake of its’ recent NPR Music First Watch premiere, Band Of Horses’ video for “Knock Knock,” the first single from new album Mirage Rock (Brown/Columbia) out September 18, has been unveiled for the world to see at HERE

Directed by Jared Eberhardt, “Knock Knock” features Band Of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Bill Reynolds and Tyler Ramsey as subjects of a vintage nature film, running wild through the frontier of Salt Lake City, UT.

Director’s Statement: ”The ‘Knock Knock’ video was the perfect combination of three things. First of all as a fan, I had a genuine interest in making something that felt like the band had made it themselves, I didn’t want it to feel too slick. Second, I grew up in the area where we shot the video, when Band Of Horses wanted to shoot there I already had all the locations picked. And third, I wanted to pay tribute to the old nature films I remember from school, those old films were all about a bunch of guys going to exotic places and staging adventures, with very little craft or consideration to lighting or aesthetics. Shooting in the middle of the day, staging scenes in really artificial ways, strange eye lines from reading cue cards, etc. It was really fun and sometimes difficult to get my head around trying to make things look bad, but not too bad.”

Ben Bridwell on the video process: ”Jared really made us feel at ease, even in the planning stages before the shoot. He listened to our concerns and took extra care to make us feel like we stayed within our element, while at the same time pushing us to get good performances. It was a hell of a long day, but an exciting adventure for us – getting to see these beautiful parts of Utah and being around the great group of people that Jared hired for the shoot. It seems fitting that we’d finally get to shoot a video around Salt Lake City as we’ve got a song that pays tribute to the area called “The Great Salt Lake” from our first album. Better late than never.”

Mirage Rock is currently available for pre-order at iTunes, with all pre-orders receiving an instant download of “Knock Knock.” Additionally, every copy of Mirage Rock purchased via http://www.itunes.com/bandofhorses will receive the full iTunes LP version of the album, featuring exclusive videos of the band and legendary producer Glyn Johns making the record in the studio, and lyrics. The full iTunes LP content makes every iTunes purchase of Mirage Rock a special edition in its own right. A sampling of the exclusive video as well as other footage, photos and more can be seen at the newly revamped www.bandofhorses.com.

DIVINE FITS: Debut Album A Thing Called Divine Fits Out TODAY on Merge

“A Thing Called Divine Fits might be the best rock record I’ve heard all year.”–THE L

“With their sharp hooks and refined new-wave bounce, we have no problem calling this supergroup a super group”–ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY The Must List: Top 10 Things We LoveThis Week

A Thing Called Divine Fits, the debut album from Divine Fits, has been released today, August 28, in the U.S. on Merge and on Universal in Canada. It was released yesterday in the UK and Europe via Anti-/Epitaph.

Early critical reaction to A Thing Called Divine Fits has been insanely positive. Whether covering the album as a whole, first single “My Love Is Real” or various other deep cuts, the media has singled out every track on A Thing Called Divine Fits for individual praise:

“The hook in ‘My Love Is Real’ could have propelled an alternate-universe hit for The Human League — but a spikier, guitar-driven side still wins the day in ‘Flaggin a Ride,’ while “Baby Get Worse’ splits the difference with winning results.”–NPR FIRST LISTEN

“striking chemistry… jittery jags that gain urgency by feeling knocked out–from the breakneck Kraftwerk of ‘The Salton Sea’ to the Wire trance spackle of ‘Neopolitans.'”–ROLLING STONE

“the lock-step drums and spare rusty-razor electric guitar of ‘What Gets You Alone’ is like Boeckner fronting Spoon; and ‘For Your Heart’ is their well-balanced marriage”–NYLON

“‘Civilian Stripes’ is an achingly pretty acoustic number…  it’s a match too good to be true, and– particularly considering the sad state of Modern Rock in 2012– far too promising to let die.”–PITCHFORK

“a lean slice of garage-psych glory”–ROLLING STONE (“Would That Not Be Nice”)

“Rare you hear a song this undeniably great whose antecedent is impossible to find”–ESQUIRE Songs Every Man Should Listen To (“Shivers”)

“most bands also don’t come to the table with the level of quality present in each of Divine Fits’ songs either. New tracks, such as… ‘Like Ice Cream’… make for a diverse and exciting set of songs that rivals anything Boeckner and Daniel have done with their other groups.”–AUSTINIST

Divine Fits will be on tour well into the fall, with a Los Angeles residency being completed by an August 28 day of release show  at the Masonic Temple and a September 4 date at The Echo with Daughn Gibson supporting. See below for all currently confirmed North American dates and check for further news, updates etc. at http://www.divinefits.comfacebook.com/divinefits or @divinefits on Twitter and Instagram.

ULTRAÍSTA TO PLAY THREE U.S. SHOWS

Tickets Available Now At http://www.ultraista.com

Debut Album From Laura Bettinson, Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker Out
October 2 On Temporary Residence Limited

Ultraísta-a/k/a vocalist/artist Laura Bettinson and multi-instrumentalist/producers Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker–has confirmed a trio of exclusive U.S. live dates following the October 2 release of its self-titled debut album on Temporary Residence Limited.

The dates are the only confirmed Ultraísta U.S. appearances at present and are as follows:

October 19: Los Angeles @ Echoplex

October 22: San Francisco @ Independent

October 24: New York @ Le Poisson Rouge

Tickets are available now at the band’s store at http://www.ultraista.com.

Founded in London in 2011 around Grammy-winning producer Godrich, journeyman drummer Waronker and Goldsmiths College alum Bettinson’s  mutual love of Afrobeat, electronic and dance music, visual art, and tequila, Ultraísta wasted no time creating 10 inspired tracks of exquisitely crafted electronic kraut-pop for this phenomenal first outing.

Favoring mantras over traditional choruses and distilling their compositions to the barest essentials, the band possesses the kind  of masterful control over the pure anatomy of a pop song that only comes from having played a significant role in redefining the form in the 21st century.

Evidence of the above has recently leaked in the form of the tracks “Bad Insect,” “Smalltalk” and “Static Light,” which can be heard and seen variously at http://www.ultraista.comhttp://www.youtube.com/user/UltraistaTVhttp://soundcloud.com/ultra1sta/and www.facebook.com/Ultraista/, among other places.

ABOUT THE FILM:
On April 2nd 2011, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza moved the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York Magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.” SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.
