BECK SIGNS TO CAPITOL RECORDS; NEW ALBUM MORNING PHASE OUT FEBRUARY 2014

Photo: Peter Hapak

Beck has signed to Capitol Records, who will release his first album of all new material since 2008’s universally acclaimed Modern Guilt in February 2014.

The new record, titled Morning Phase, has been described as a companion piece of sorts to Beck’s 2002 classic Sea Change. Featuring many of the same musicians who played on that record (who are also currently accompanying him live) —Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner — Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.

Morning Phase caps off a yearlong creative tear that traces back to the December of 2012 release of the lavishly packaged and illustrated Song Reader featuring sheet music for 20 new original Beck songs.  The project quickly took on a life of its own, with musicians from across the globe recording their own interpretations, as well as Beck’s own special shows featuring eclectic lists of co-conspirators putting their own stamp on the compositions. Following that, Beck re-imagined David Bowie’s classic “Sound + Vision” with a hand-selected 160-piece orchestra… culminating with a groundbreaking interactive 360-degree filming of a live performance of the track.  More recently, this summer brought us three rabidly received singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl (“Defriended,” “I Won’t Be Long,” Gimme”), and September saw Beck custom-creating two performance pieces for Doug Aitken’s Station to Station series of transient happenings, all interspersed with his current  run of live shows–touted by reviewers the world over as among the very best of his career.

Complete track listing, exact release date, and further information re: Morning Phase will be released as it is confirmed.

NEW video from Paul McCartney for “Queenie Eye”

© Mary McCartney

Following the release of Paul McCartney’s brand NEW album last week, the video for album track “Queenie Eye” will be premiered on VEVO tomorrow, Thursday October 24th at 12PM EST.

“Queenie Eye”, described by Q magazine as “jaw dropping”, was produced by Paul Epworth and is one of the albums many highlights. Paul played the track live in Covent Garden last week at a spontaneous pop-up show which drew in an audience of thousands. The week before saw him do the same in Times Square, New York.

The song is based on a childhood chant Paul remembers when he was growing up in Liverpool: “Queenie eye, queenie eye, who’s got the ball? It isn’t in my pocket. O-U-T spells OUT!”

Paul recalls, “It came from a street game I use to play as a kid. Those kind of things always stick with you. I always liked the rhythm of the chant”.

The video for “Queenie Eye” was filmed at Abbey Road earlier this month and was directed by Simon Aboud. Featuring a number of special guests, the video sees Paul recording the track in what he thinks is an empty studio (Studio 2). As the song develops the studio starts to fill up with people all reacting in different ways to the song and Paul is completely unaware. The video brings everybody’s personal experience into one place.

THE BREEDERS: LAST CHANCE FOR LAST SPLASH

Photo: Kevin Westenberg

“It was a mere 40 minutes long, but the Breeders’ Last Splash made huge waves in the pool of our ’90s consciousness. In fact, it’s still lounging out there on its floaty, with strawberry daiquiri firmly in hand, showing all the fresh young cabana boys and girls how to do it. It’s been 20 years and that shit still sounds fantastic.” – PORTLAND MERCURY

The Breeders’ Last Splash 20th Anniversary tour continues with another wave of tour dates being added to close out 2013. Following a stint in Australia at the end of October, Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson and Josephine Wiggs will return to the United States for a batch of new dates. As was the case earlier in the tour, the band will continue to play their landmark album, Last Splash, in its entirety. The full itinerary can be found below with new dates in BOLD. MAGIC HOUR OUT NOVEMBER 5 ON CITY SONG

“Luscious Jackson are back and they’re still sounding damn good. We already heard ‘Show Us What You Got,’ and ‘Are You Ready?’ Now there’s another one, ‘So Rock On,’ which sounds like it could have come from their heyday… in all the right ways. The attitude and coolness are still there but the actual production sounds totally fresh”–STEREOGUM

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: THE GORIES, THE SHAW TAPES: LIVE IN DETROIT 5/27/88 OUT NOVEMBER 26TH

JACK JOHNSON LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS OUT BLACK FRIDAY AT RECORD STORE DAY RETAILERS

“The best garage band in America since the ’60s. Very primitive…they made people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots.” – Jack White

The Gories began in the cultural vacuum of Detroit in 1986. With humble beginnings at a community concert series through a tumultuous end on their 1992 European tour, this is a band whose influence has far outstretched the ground they covered. Rooted in the primal, primitive underpinnings of 50’s rhythm and blues and unhinged 60s garage punk, the sound they came to was wholly their own. Over two years in the making, Third Man collectively feels like a bunch of teenage fanboys with the release of The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit 5/27/88.  Recorded at house party in a converted store front, the band captured here is at the height of their powers. Featuring covers of classics by the likes of John Lee Hooker, the Stooges and Willie Dixon, as well as a bevy of their oft-imitated originals, Live in Detroit 5/27/88 is The Gories first live album, their fourth full-length and their first widespread release since 1992. While band members Mick Collins and Dan Kroha would go on to wider recognition in the Dirtbombs and Demolition Dolls Rods respectively, The Gories should be viewed in the same influential context as the Velvet Underground and the Cramps. While they may have barely sold any records, the folks that saw and heard these bands were inspired to create. It’s high time The Gories get their due and there’s no better evidence than this explosive live recording from 25 years ago. Preview “To Find Out (The Keggs)” on Third Man’s SoundCloud.

SEASICK STEVE: HUBCAP MUSIC OUT TODAY ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

With one platinum and four gold records in the UK under his belt, today Seasick Steve unleashes his newest record HUBCAP MUSIC on the colonies. The album, produced by the dog himself, features long-time drummer and frying pan virtuoso Dan Magnusson as well as John Paul Jones, Jack White III, Luther Dickinson, Elizabeth Cook and Fats Kaplin. The record marks Seasick Steve’s second full-length on Third Man Records, and joins a blue series 7″ (“Write Me a Few Lines“) and a live, direct-to-acetate recording (Seasick Steve Live at Third Man Records) to make up his Third Man catalog.

Hubcap Music derives its title from Seasick’s 4-stringed Morris Minor guitar, fashioned from two Minor 1000 hubcaps and a garden hoe, and his second similarly made instrument using Hudson Terraplane hubcaps, given to him by Jack White. The Morris Minor guitar made its first appearance on the TV show “Top Gear,” and rivals Seasick’s Didley Bo for the title of baddest junk’strument ever to grace (and sell out) such stages as Royal Albert Hall, Manchester Theatre and Hammersmith Apollo Theaters.

Visit Soundcloud to listen to “Home” featuring Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars fame on slide guitar.

Hubcap Music (TMR218) is available on CD/LP/MP3 via Third Man Records, at thirdmanstore.com and wherever records are sold.
