mural was painted on a wall across from McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Jeremy deVine, founder of the band’s longtime label Temporary Residence Ltd., documented the painting of Esteban Rey’s signature artwork. The film documents the 3-day painting process from color mixing to final brush strokes, and features the painters wearing the same iconic overalls and hard hats worn by Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch in the film (and listening to the same vintage boom box). The video is scored by soundtrack’s closing song, the standout “Send Off”.

KELLEY STOLTZ: DOUBLE EXPOSURE OUT SEPTEMBER 24 ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

While many rocking bands in San Francisco and beyond claim to be ‘garage’ bands’ – Kelley Stoltz has actually recorded his new LP “Double Exposure” in the garage behind his house. And while the car oil stained floors are covered by oriental rugs and there are no snow shovels laying around – there is a collection of vintage synths, 17 guitars, tape echos, mellotrons, a 50’s jukebox, a Teardrop Explodes poster, a tape machine used by The Residents, an amp used by Stooge James Williamson, and a myriad other noise making devices which rear their heads on his new record. All told the place is called Electric Duck Studio and it’s become a muse capturing zone for Stoltz, as well as Sonny & the Sunsets, The Mantles, Tim Cohen, Life Stinks, The Sandwitches and many other tuneweavers big and small.

“Double Exposure” is Kelley’s first album in a while – near on 3 years since his last one, “To Dreamers” came out on Sub Pop. What the heck has he been doing since, you ask? Well renovating the garage for one, and using said garage studio to engineer, produce or encourage the above named bands… You see time flies when you’re having fun. Add in some love, a little heartbreak, turning 40, deciding to jog everyday, staring at the wall, singing hundreds of songs into the phone, sleeping, recording an album of cover songs with his family, making a couple 45 singles, catching white wine buzzes, getting dropped by Sub Pop, playing keyboards on tour with Rodriguez, and signing on with old supporters at Third Man Records… really it’s as good old Sandy Denny sang, who knows where the time goes.

Anyway, if you stir up all that stuff and a few other things we won’t mention here, you have the makings of a fantastic and heartfelt record, “Double Exposure” has 10 new jams that Thee Oh Sees main man, John Dwyer, describes thusly, “A piece of gold in your ear, A lovely thought in your mind, A breeze in the sun, This record is perfect…”

Nicely put there Johnny! And you too will thrill to the sound of delay pedals twisting the keys on “Inside My Head”, crane your neck to the backwards guitars of “Are You My Love”, ramble and gamble to the clanging cymbals on the title track, question the sanity of a song called “Kim Chee Taco Man”, and finally, fall down and weep at the sweet fluted sentiments of “It’s Summertime Again”.

“Kim Chee Taco Man” is now available to stream via SoundCloud:

For all of you Aussie rules fans, the album was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control and features Stoltz playing most of the instruments himself and overdubbing parts through his trusty 8 track tape machine.

“Double Exposure” will be released on LP/Download by Third Man Records on 9/24/13 in the US and 10/7/13 in UK / Europe.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE: “I SAT BY THE OCEAN” SINGLE AT RADIO NOW

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR RESUMES WITH LOLLAPALOOZA DOMINATION

…LIKE CLOCKWORK LIMITED EDITION USB DRIVE SELLS OUT INSTANTLY

© Cambria Harkey

“Thursday’s Queens of the Stone Age set at Metro had the potential to be the best thing we’d see all weekend… Now I’m thinking it might have been the best thing I’ll see in 2013.”–CHICAGO NOW

“… though his band wasn’t set to kick off their Lolla performance until Friday evening, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme had already started the party… Homme and his gang of desert-rock ruffians plowed through nearly two hours of blistering riffs and druggy singalongs… There was a smattering of entries from the group’s excellent new album …Like Clockwork, and those tracks… already sound like staples, and they were greeted as such.”–ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“Queens of the Stone Age unleashed a stellar set of rollicking rock… included plenty of material off their superb new album, …Like Clockwork“–ROLLING STONE

“Queens of the Stone Age sprinkled its face-melting early-evening set on the Bud Light stage with newer goodies… Homme’s badass riffs incited a frenzy of headbanging… closed the set in a hail of whiplash-inducing guitars and drum solos.”–BILLBOARD

“QOTSA’s set was all about that sound, a tight, monolithic, wall of noise… people actually chanted the riff to ‘No One Knows‘ back at them like it was lyrics”–SPIN “Lollapalooza 2013: The Best Things We Saw on Friday”

Having utterly dominated Lollapalooza from an epic pre-festival club gig for an intimate handful of true believers to a blistering Friday mainstage blowout, Queens Of The Stone Age have sicced new single “I Sat By The Ocean” on radio and resumed the global campaign that will take them once more around the world before the close of 2013.

“I Sat By The Ocean” follows in the wake of of the searing “My God Is The Sun” as the latest single from  the undisputed best rock record of the year, Queens Of The Stone Age’s universally acclaimed …Like Clockwork (Matador). Produced by founder Joshua Homme and QOTSA, recorded by Mark Rankin with additional engineering by Alain Johannes and Justin Smith, at Josh’s studio, Pink Duck, in Burbank, CA, …Like Clockwork is the sixth Queens Of The Stone Age album and the band’s first U.S. #1 album. The record has also hit #1 in Australia, Ireland and Portgual, #2 in the UK, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland and New Zealand,  #3 in Holland and Austria, #4 in Denmark and top 10 in Germany, France, and Spain.

More recently, …Like Clockwork was made available in a limited edition USB drive format that sold out instantly.

As reports from Lollapalooza and the world at large continue to verify, Homme and cohorts  Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Michael Shuman and Jon Theodore are living up …Like Clockwork‘s rave reviews by delivering the world’s premiere live rock show nightly. No surprise then that they are continually expanding the world tour in support of …Like Clockwork. See below for dates and continue to Keep Your Eyes Peeled to http://qotsa.com/live for updates:

NIRVANA: IN UTERO 20TH ANNIVERSARY MULTI-FORMAT REISSUE OUT SEPTEMBER 24

REMASTERED ALBUM AND ORIGINAL B-SIDES TO BE REISSUED ALONG WITH NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD DEMOS AND THE COMPLETE “LIVE AND LOUD” CONCERT FROM DECEMBER 13, 1993

To say that Nirvana’s third and ultimately final studio album In Utero was 1993’s most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini’s recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor Nevermind having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock ’n’ roll to the top of the pop charts, In Utero was essentially the first record Nirvana would make with any expectations from the public.  So from the opening quasi-shamble melodics of “Serve The Servants” through the bittersweet closing strains of “All Apologies,” In Utero was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted rock ‘n’ roll band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a generational spokes-band mantle they’d never seen coming—and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. As Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke said in his review at the time, “In Utero is a lot of things—brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it’s a triumph of the will.”

Universal Music Enterprises will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the unwitting swansong of the single most influential artist of the 1990s with a multi-format release that spreads more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased and live recordings over configurations ranging from a 3-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album. Material exclusive to the various versions of the In Utero 20th Anniversary reissue will include a veritable  treasure trove of never-before-heard demos, B-sides, compilation tracks, and live material featuring the final touring lineup of Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, and Pat Smear…including the long-awaited release of the complete “Live and Loud” show from Seattle’s Pier 48 on December 13, 1993.  Additionally, a standalone single-disc DVD of the complete “Live And Loud” show along with several never-before-released bonus performances will also be released on September 24.

SOME IDEALISTIC FUTURE: AN UNPRECEDENTED LOOK AT 10 YEAR HISTORY OF THE POSTAL SERVICE BY THE CREATORS PROJECT

From the initial long distance collaboration between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello that created 2003’s sleeper classic Give Up to the current reunion tour celebrating the platinum album’s 10th anniversary and packing houses from New York’s Barclays Center to the Greek Theatres of Los Angeles and Berkeley… The Postal Service has now had its unique journey examined and chronicled by The Creators Project, a partnership between Intel and VICE. Viewers are given an intimate look at the band and its process: from the dressing room to the digital (re)construction of the music to the moment the band takes the stage.

Directed by Justin Mitchell,  this is a one of a kind look at one of the most beloved acts of the past decade. Mitchell says of the project: “I‘ve been looking for a project to use prisms on for a while and much like the multiple frames, I think they help to support the story of the band. For me the prisms represent a gathering of all the disparate energies that propelled the album upwards and onwards during the last ten years.  The band might be the center of the image and the focus but for ten years they allowed Give Up to live its own life and somehow, all that outside energy resulted in a platinum album.  Now, as Ben says, they get to reclaim it and I think the prism (which just looked so much cooler in slow motion) helps to show that. ” Read the rest of the interview with Justin Mitchell on The Creators Project: http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/capturing-the-postal-service-on-their-reunion-tour

The Postal Service has spent the spring and summer traversing the States playing to sold out arenas, theaters and festival grounds nationwide. The ongoing 10th anniversary tour commemorating the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (Sub Pop) has recently included stops at Coachella, Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, Seattle’s Key Arena and a late night appearance on The Colbert Report. The tour continues with two-night stints at The Greek Theater in both Los Angeles and Berkeley, CA. The band will wrap up the most nostalgic tour of the summer with a set at Lollapolooza and subsequent sold out after show at The Metro in Chicago.

The tour has elicited rave reviews from critics across the country including, but not limited to:

“If last night’s Barclays Center show, part of a tour thrown to celebrate the reissue of Give Up, proved anything, it’s that their fans love them just as much as they ever have…  the band’s arena-sized show managed to sound current despite its sentimental undertones – and relevant even to today’s indie-pop landscape, for that matter… at Barclays’ 18,000-seat venue, the show became about purging (feelings! memories!) en masse. Everyone from the VIP to the far-reaching corners of the stadium sang along to ‘Such Great Heights,’ aligning the starry emotions beaming out from their loving, freckled eyes with the distant glare reflected from Gibbard’s guitar… drowning in the echoes of the thousands of fans singing back to them, I thought about how absolutely laughable the idea of a successor was. No one could ever be the Postal Service except for the Postal Service.”–ROLLING STONE

“The place wasn’t tiny; it was the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the arena was sold out for the first of two shows there. It’s at least an order of magnitude larger perfectly current, and perfectly settled. There was no need to tamper with an accurate prophecy.”–THE NEW YORK TIMES

“The staccato melody lifted into soaring highs…Gibbard directed the crowd into an a cappella repeat of the chorus… Everyone in the building knew each and every word.” – AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“On a night when the Rolling Stones were blasting through a greatest hits showcase at the Garden and the Bruins were battling the Blackhawks in game one of the Stanley Cup finals, this was clearly THE place to be in Boston.” – BOSTON HERALD

“Such a charmed trajectory, almost implausible in today’s fragmented musical environment, is more or less the truth of what happened to Gibbard and collaborator Jimmy Tamborello who released the Postal Service’s one and only album, Give Up, to critical acclaim in 2003. At Barclays, the duo — joined by RIlo Kiley singer Jenny lewis — gave new life to that beloved collection of pensive and ebullient electro-pop songs, triggering a rare nostalgia high for assembled fans… tantalizingly sweet.” – BILLBOARD

“This material is densely packed with ethereal instrumentation, propulsive rhythms and evocative wordplay, a combination that’s built to last…On stage adorned with gorgeous pillars of light, Gibbard, Tamborello, Lewis and Burhenn executed intricate turns between dance-worthy beats and evocative melodies, turning on dime from moodiness to mayhem.” – ORLANDO SENTINEL

“the band delivered on the nostalgia of fans who’ve had but one Postal Service album to obsess over while coming of age (or simply aging). The surprise was just how loud, grand and epic it played in a large venue.” – WILLAMETTE WEEKLY

SOUND CITY DVD CERTIFIED GOLD

SOUND CITY, the feature length directorial debut from Dave Grohl that Peter Travers of ROLLING STONE hailed as an “exhilarating documentary about what makes life worth living… an intimate epic about music” and THE NEW YORK TIMES called “candy to several generations’ worth of rock fans” has now been certified as a Gold Longform Video by the RIAA.

RIAA Gold Longform Video certification is awarded for physical sales in excess of 50,000 copies. In the United States alone, SOUND CITY has sold over 100,000 copies (50,000+ digital and 50,000+ physical), since debuting at #1 on the iTunes Documentary chart earlier this year.

SOUND CITY was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from the now defunct Van Nuys, California studio for which the film is named. The board, custom built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.

Grohl’s personal connection to SOUND CITY goes back to his first full-fledged recording session at the film’s namesake–the recordings that became Nirvana’s 1991 breakthrough album, Nevermind. Nevermind would go on to sell in excess of 30 million copies worldwide, forever altering the course of popular music as well as Grohl’s life.

SOUND CITY made its world premiere January at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and debuted in theaters the following month. For further information, go to http://soundcitymovie.com.

PAUL McCARTNEY BREAKS HIS OWN FENWAY PARK ATTENDANCE RECORD

JULY 9 SHOW DRAWS LARGEST CONCERT CROWD IN FENWAY HISTORY: 36,064

Boston, MA (July 10, 2013) – Live Nation New England and the Boston Red Sox are pleased to announce that last evening’s Paul McCartney 2013 “Out There” performance has set the record for the largest single concert attendance in the history of Fenway Park:  36,064 people were on hand to witness his truly historic return to the storied ballpark.

This is the second record McCartney has set at Fenway, the first being the August 5 & 6, 2009 stand that set the two-day box office record for a concert at the park.

The record setting performance featured nearly three hours of material from the most beloved catalog in popular music, with Paul McCartney performing songs spanning his entire career–as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course The Beatles.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For approximately three hours, many of the greatest moments of the last 50 years of musical history–not to mention the soundtracks of entire lives–are magically brought to life as only Paul can do. Last year marked 40 years since Paul’s premiere tour as a solo artist and these past four decades have seen him play in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow’s Red Square, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people and even a performance beamed into outer space! Having played with his peerless band of Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens (keyboards), Rusty Anderson (guitar), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums) and Brian Ray (bass/guitar) for over ten years, Paul never disappoints–as The Boston Globe agreed in 2009, hailing the show as “a nearly flawless performance that played heavily to favorites while allowing him to stretch out as an artist who is obviously still vital and relevant.”
