PAUL MCCARTNEY: THE LYRICS: 1956 to the Present

THE LYRICS: 1956 to the Present

A self-portrait in 154 songs, by our greatest living songwriter

‘More often than I can count, I’ve been asked if I would write an autobiography, but the time has never been right. The one thing I’ve always managed to do, whether at home or on the road, is to write new songs. I know that some people, when they get to a certain age, like to go to a diary to recall day-to-day events from the past, but I have no such notebooks. What I do have are my songs, hundreds of them, which I’ve learned serve much the same purpose. And these songs span my entire life’ Paul McCartney, The Lyrics

In this extraordinary book, with unparalleled candour, Paul McCartney recounts his life and art through the prism of 154 songs from all stages of his career – from his earliest boyhood compositions through the legendary decade of The Beatles, to Wings and his solo albums to the present. Arranged alphabetically to provide a kaleidoscopic rather than chronological account, it establishes definitive texts of the songs’ lyrics for the first time and describes the circumstances in which they were written, the people and places that inspired them, and what he thinks of them now. Presented with this is a treasure trove of material from McCartney’s personal archive – drafts, letters, photographs – never seen before, which make this also a unique visual record of one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

We learn intimately about the man, the creative process, the working out of melodies, the moments of inspiration. The voice and personality of Paul McCartney sings off every page. There has never been a book about a great musician like it.

‘I hope that what I’ve written will show people something about my songs and my life which they haven’t seen before. I’ve tried to say something about how the music happens and what it means to me and I hope what it may mean to others too’ Paul McCartney

‘Based on conversations I had with Paul McCartney over a five year period, these commentaries are as close to an autobiography as we may ever come. His insights into his own artistic process confirm a notion at which we had but guessed — that Paul McCartney is a major literary figure who draws upon, and extends, the long tradition of poetry in English’ Paul Muldoon

SPIRITUALIZED: THE SPACEMAN REISSUE PROGRAM CURATED BY JASON PIERCE

SPIRITUALIZED

THE SPACEMAN REISSUE PROGRAM
CURATED BY J SPACEMAN

FAT POSSUM TO ISSUE DEFINITIVE VINYL EDITIONS OF CLASSIC FIRST FOUR ALBUMS

First Installment Lazer Guided Melodies Out April 23

Pre-Order HERE

Spiritualized and Fat Possum Records are proud to announce the first stage of The Spaceman Reissue Program: definitive vinyl releases of the first four Spiritualized albums. Curated by J Spaceman, the series will kick off April 23 with Spiritualized’s classic 1992 debut, Lazer Guided Melodies.

Elevating the gritty, narcotic garage blues of Pierce’s recently disbanded Spacemen 3 into a crystalline space rock/pop wall of sound, Lazer Guided Melodies was recorded from 1990 to 1991, its 12 songs divided into four distinct movements. Reflecting on the transition from Spacemen 3 to the first realization of the Spiritualized sound, Pierce recalls:

“The last Spacemen 3 record was under-realized to me. When I listen back to that stuff it sounds like somebody finding their way. There was a lot of ideas but no way to put them into a space that would make them all work. So, there was a huge freedom forging over the last Spacemen 3 record and when Spiritualized started it was like, ‘OK it’s all yours. Go’…

We recorded the tracks in the studio near my flat which was a place where they predominantly recorded advertising jingles and it’s where we made all the Spacemen 3 records, but then the recordings were taken to Battery Studios in London, to explore a more professional way of making music… Once I approached that way of doing things I opened up a whole world and I was astounded that somebody could take those tracks and turn it into the record it became…”

The Spaceman Reissue Program edition of Lazer Guided Melodies promises to give those recordings the fullest spectrum audio and physical treatment they’ve deserved since 1992. It will be the first in this series of 180g double albums mastered from a half speed lacquer cut from original sources by Alchemy Mastering, presented in a gatefold jacket adorned by reworked art by Mark Farrow, and available in both a standard black vinyl pressing and limited edition white vinyl exclusive to D2C / indie retail.

Alongside the vinyl reissue, for a limited time there will also be a comprehensive series of Lazer Guided Melodies merchandise based on original vintage designs available via spiritualized.com.

Stay tuned to this frequency for release dates and further information on The Spaceman Reissue Program releases of Pure Phase (1995), Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (1997) and Let It Come Down (2001).

The rock doctors will see you now: Foo Fighters have finally unleashed all nine doses of their much heralded new album, Medicine at Midnight  (Roswell Records/RCA Records).

Medicine at Midnight’s release ends the wait that was first kicked into high gear last year with the Mainstream Rock/Rock Airplay #1 “Shame Shame” and bludgeoning “final f*ck you to 2020” (UPROXX) “No Son of Mine,” and more recently the epic ballad to cathartic scream of  “Waiting on a War.” While anticipation has built exponentially with each new track, early critical notices been amongst the most enthusiastic of the band’s 26 years in the game, including:

“(FOUR STARS) Brighter and more optimistic than anything they’ve ever done… Even the harder-rocking songs overflow with ear candy.”—ROLLING STONE

“One of Foo Fighters’ best albums of this century.”—WALL STREET JOURNAL

“Dave Grohl and company have another winner on their hands.”—MERCURY NEWS

Medicine at Midnight can now be purchased, streamed or download in its entirety at http://foofighters.co/MAM.

Medicine at Midnight’s release wraps up Foo Fighters’ week-long partnership with Spotify, which featured surprise ‘Midnight Drops’ of of exclusive video, audio, and playlist content— an occasion marked by the band’s larger than life appearance on Spotify’s Times Square billboard.

To celebrate the release of their new album, the Foo Fighters will host a special six-part radio series: Medicine at Midnight Radio on Apple Music Hits. Each band member will host an hour-long episode where they’ll explore their personal inspirations and reflect on the creative process behind the album. Fans can tune in every day next week, beginning Monday, February 8th at 4:00p PST on Apple Music Hits at apple.co/FFRadio and simultaneously on the band’s new limited-run SiriusXM channel, Foo Fighters Radio (channel 105). Dave also joined Zane Lowe on his daily Apple Music 1 show earlier this week to chat about the album. Listen to their conversation HERE

Medicine at Midnight is produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, engineered by Darrell Thorp and mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent.

Foo Fighters are Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jaffee.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND: 2021, 40:42 by Goose & Sam Gendel

VAMPIRE WEEKEND: 2021, 40:42

by Goose & Sam Gendel

“[2021] leaves you satisfied while wanting more…”
—ESQUIRE

… More has arrived in the form of 40:42.

Vampire Weekend have commissioned universally acclaimed jazz saxophonist Sam Gendel and Connecticut-based rock quintet Goose to each craft reinterpretations of the understated but oddly addictive (NME)“2021.”

The artists were given one directive: make their versions twenty minutes and twenty-one seconds in length (as opposed to the short and sweet (Newsweek) 1:39 original on the band’s GRAMMY winning album, Father of the Bride). Sam Gendel met this challenge with the track “2021 (in the space between two pieces of wood).” Goose’s personal interpretation is titled “2021 (January 5th, to be exact).” The combined effort comprises the upcoming EP, 40:42

Both of these unique expressions of “2021″ are stunning and unexpected versions of what has become a Vampire Weekend fan favorite. Watch Gendel’s jazz take laid atop his own improvisational animation and Goose perform the song up close and intimately.

Watch both of them here:

Goose

The 40:42 EP is available now across all digital platforms and is being self-released by Vampire Weekend.

Sam Gendel is a jazz musician and producer living in Los Angeles. He is most known for his work with the saxophone, though he is proficient on multiple instruments. He has collaborated with Vampire Weekend on the FOTB tracks “Spring Snow” and “Flower Moon,” adding to a diverse CV featuring work with a range of artists including Ry Cooder, Blake Mills, Sam Amidon, Perfume Genius, Moses Sumney, Knower and inc. no world. Gendel’s own discography includes the critically praised Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar with bassist Sam Wilkes and 4444. Gendel released two full length albums on Nonesuch in 2020, Satin Doll followed by DRM.  Both releases were met with universal critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork and others, and the latter garnered a “Top 10 Best L.A. Albums of 2020” from the Los Angeles Times.

Goose is Rick Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar), Peter Anspach (vocals, keyboards/guitar), Trevor Bass (bass), Ben Atkind (drums) and Jeff Arevalo (vocals, percussion). The rock quintet is comprised of friends of differing ages and experiences from the same small town in Connecticut, drawn together through a deep love of music and storytelling. Vampire Weekend and Goose have formed a mutual admiration society, with Ezra singing the praises of Goose on his Beats1Radio show, Time Crisis and Goose’s Peter Anspach heaping similar props on VW as one of his “biggest inspirations… a great band that’s pushing musical boundaries.”

NEW TRACK AND VIDEO OUT TODAY VIA LOVES WAY

Jenny Lewis and Serengeti have unveiled a second collaborative track, “Vroom Vroom”—available now via Jenny’s label Loves Way.

Switching lanes from the dreamy and downtempo French New Wave-groove of the duo’s first offering, “Unblu,” “Vroom Vroom” is a 90s style glitch pop song about thinning your social group and clearing your mind in unclear times.

Produced by Jenny and Andrew Broder, “Vroom Vroom” follows Jenny and Serengeti’s surprise 2020 release of “Unblu,” which earned rousing waves of critical acclaim:

“recaptures a narcotic late-1960s Velvet Underground flavor” — NEW YORK TIMES (The Playlist)

“With its chilly synths and twinkling pianos, it’s downtempo for lockdown…a beguiling introduction to a creative partnership that blossomed in spite of physical distance”— AV CLUB (A-Sides – 5 New Releases We Love)

“[a] smudged-lens swoon…a true team effort between two unlikely collaborators.”—STEREOGUM

“a dreamy Serge Gainsbourg/Brigitte Bardot vibe”—ROLLING STONE

Hot on the heels of “No Son of Mine,” Foo Fighters unleash another dose of Medicine at Midnight in the form of “Waiting on a War.” In stark contrast to the bludgeoning “final f*ck you to 2020” (UPROXX) of its predecessor, “Waiting on a War” is a sprawling melodic opus that gradually builds to a patented FF rave-up.

If “Waiting on a War” seems to have an especially emotional heft to its lyrics, well, that’s because it does. Dave Grohl recounts the personal anecdote that inspired the song:

Last fall, as I was driving my daughter to school, she turned to me and asked, “Daddy, is there going to be a war?” My heart sank as I realized that she was now living under the same dark cloud that I had felt 40 years ago.

I wrote “Waiting on a War” that day.

Everyday waiting for the sky to fall. Is there more to this than that? Is there more to this than just waiting on a war? Because I need more. We all do.

This song was written for my daughter, Harper, who deserves a future, just as every child does.

Celebrate Grohl’s birthday tonight, January 14, with Foo Fighters’ network TV debut performance of “Waiting on a War” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Medicine at Midnight (out February 5th on Roswell Records/RCA Records) is produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, engineered by Darrell Thorp and mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent, and packs the following nine songs into a tight-ass 37 minutes:

      Making a Fire
      Shame Shame
      Cloudspotter
      Waiting on a War
      Medicine at Midnight
      No Son of Mine
      Holding Poison
      Chasing Birds
      Love Dies Young

Foo Fighters are Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jaffee.

HAPPY FOO YEAR: “NO SON OF MINE” SECOND TRACK FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM OUT NOW

HAPPY FOO YEAR:
“NO SON OF MINE”

SECOND TRACK FROM FORTHCOMING 10th ALBUM OUT NOW

MEDICINE AT MIDNIGHT AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT http://foofighters.co/MAM

Foo Fighters are ringing in 2021—literally—with the ear-ringing new “No Son of Mine.”  The second track to be revealed from the band’s forthcoming 10th album Medicine at Midnight (out February 5th on Roswell Records/RCA Records), “No Son of Mine” is now available to stream or download, or as an instant grat track with pre-orders placed at foofighters.co/MAM

“No Son of Mine” ignites the second half of Medicine at Midnight with a lightning strike of a riFF that builds into the album’s most full-on barnstormer. Replete with nods to familiar FF influences from Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” to Ace of Spades/Iron Fist-era Motörhead to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All, “No Son of Mine” features a streamlined, minimalist chassis of searing Grohl, Smear and Shiflett licks atop a steel-trap-tight Hawkins/Mendel rhythmic frame.

“This is the kind of song that just resides in all of us and if it makes sense at the time, we let it out,” Grohl explains, adding, “Lyrically it’s meant to poke at the hypocrisy of self righteous leaders, people that are guilty of committing the crimes they’re supposedly against…”

Medicine at Midnight is produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, engineered by Darrell Thorp and mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent, and packs the following nine songs into a tight-ass 37 minutes:

      Making a Fire
      Shame Shame
      Cloudspotter
      Waiting on a War
      Medicine at Midnight
      No Son of Mine
      Holding Poison
      Chasing Birds
      Love Dies Young

“…there’s something incredibly ‘Paul’ about McCartney’s approach to the pandemic album: cheery, resilient, forever looking forward. It’s a reminder of one of the Beatles’ most powerful messages to baby boomers: life gets better. It’s getting better all the time.” — THE NEW YORKER

“…a laid-back gem” — ROLLING STONE

“…a spectacular return to form… his musical chops are as exquisite and profound as virtually anyone’s. Ever.” — SALON

“…striking melodies and deft arrangements… displays a still vibrant compositional flair.” — THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

The wait is finally over: Paul McCartney’s overwhelmingly anticipated all-new, all-Paul album McCartney III has been released in its full streaming, CD, and rainbow of vinyl glory as of today December 18, 2020 via Capitol Records.

Paul’s first new album since 2018’s #1 charting Egypt StationMcCartney III is a stripped back, self-produced and, quite literally, solo work in the tradition of 1970’s McCartney and 1980’s McCartney II. Recorded earlier this year during “Rockdown” in Sussex, McCartney III is mostly built from live takes of Paul on vocals and guitar or piano, overdubbing his bass playing, drumming, etc. atop that foundation. The process first sparked when Paul returned to an unreleased track from the early 90s, “When Winter Comes” (recorded with George Martin). Paul crafted a new passage for the song, giving rise to album opener “Long Tailed Winter Bird”—while “When Winter Comes,” featuring its new 2020 intro “Winter Bird,” became the new album’s grand finale.

The newest and most in depth look at the McCartney III creative process surfaced this week in the form of the “Find My Way” video  Directed by Roman Coppola, the shoot utilized no less than 46 cameras to capture Paul on every instrument and from every angle, resulting in an unprecedented and intimate glimpse into Paul creating and performing a McCartney III highlight.

For more McCartney III, check out Spotify’s McCartney III enhanced album experience featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes video clips and commentary (https://PaulMcCartney.lnk.to/SpotifyEnhancedPR), Amazon Music’s murals in 12 cities globally featuring sheet music from the album and interpretations from musicians & artists around the world (https://PaulMcCartney.lnk.to/12DaysOfPaulPR), and On Monday, 12/21 at 9:00 AM PST Paul will join Apple Music’s Zane Lowe for an in-depth conversation about ‘McCartney III’. Tune in at apple.co/Zane.Just as McCartney’s classic 1970 solo debut marked Paul’s return to basics in the wake of the biggest band break-up in musical history, and the 1980 avant-garde masterpiece McCartney II rose from the ashes of Wings, McCartney III finds Paul back on his own, turning unexpected circumstances into a personal snapshot of a timeless artist at a unique point in history.
