SPOON: THEY WANT MY SOUL DEBUTS AT #4

They Want My Soul
They Want My Soul

“Their songs deliver a pure rush of musical elation… the power of familiar songs without actually sounding that much like other rock music at all.” — THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE

“They Want My Soul is Spoon’s strongest album yet, something rarely (if ever) said about a band’s eighth record.” — THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

Riding a tidal wave of rave reviews, killer TV appearances, and Triple A Top 10 single “Do You” (just added into rotation at mtvU and MTV2), Spoon’s eighth – and by all accounts, best – studio albumThey Want My Soul (Loma Vista/Concord) has entered the U.S. album chart at #4, selling nearly 40,000 copies in the week since its August 5 release.

They Want My Soul‘s #4 debuts ties the band’s career high, established by its previous albumTransference (Merge) which debuted in the same position in 2010.

They Want My Soul also claims the #1 spot at independent retail by a large margin, with nearly 20% of the record’s first week tally coming from Spoon’s groundbreaking Vinyl Gratification initiative. Additionally, They Want My Soul landed at #3 on the digital chart. Purchase They Want My Soul on Amazon and iTunes.

Spoon has put forth the official video for “Do You,” They Want My Soul‘s lead single. View the video now on VEVO.

Spoon recently kicked off its tour supporting the new album with a sold out show on the Fairbanks Lawn of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, as well as show-stealing performances at festivals including Governors Ball, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands, all of which back up ROLLING STONE’s warning that ”you’d be a fool to miss Spoon in concert if you get the chance”. “one of the greatest American rock bands of its generation…genres and trends shift with time, but craftsmanship like this never goes out of style.” –– TIME

“Spoon’s eighth album is an immediate grabber on par with the group’s best work to date… a rich, luminous sound for a set of hooky songs… Spoon have always done surprisingly well on their own terms, in their own world. And that world sounds bigger and brighter than ever.” –– ROLLING STONE, 4-Star Review

“What happened last night at the McKittrick probably won’t be replicated ever again, but it made a strong case that you’d be a fool to miss Spoon in concert if you get the chance.” — ROLLING STONE

“They Want My Soul is the quintet’s most booming LP… These songs rip and burst and just go… They didn’t burn out. They’re not fading away.” — PITCHFORK, 8.6 Best New Music

“the best American band of the 2000s” — MAGNET

“Spoon is the greatest band on Earth” –– STEREOGUM

They Want My Soul, the eighth – and by early accounts, best – studio album from Spoon, is now available in the United States. They Want My Soul is already awash in waves of critical acclaim which continue to roll in as fans and critics alike herald the return of the modern rock mainstays.

Spoon celebrated their record’s release last night on The Tonight Show where they performed “Do You”. Keep an eye on www.tonightshow.com for a special acoustic performance of “Inside Out” recorded in the band’s dressing room.

This weekend, Britt, Jim, Rob, Eric and Alex joined forces with Punchdrunk’s interactive play Sleep No More at The McKittrick Hotel and Myspace to give lucky fans a treat they won’t soon forget. Invitees arrived at the McKittrick where they began questioning just what was going to happen. Select fans were whisked away by Sleep No More‘s actors – and Spoon band members – in order receive sacraments and be “reborn”. Once sacraments were distributed and souls preserved, a curtain fell to reveal the band as they launched into a rollicking rendition of They Want My Soul‘s “Knock Knock Knock”. Spoon kept the crowd entranced and hollering through a set lasting over an hour that was packed with soon-to-be classics from They Want My Soul and other staples from the band’s catalog.

The release was preceded by the never-before-attempted Vinyl Gratification initiative where Spoon rewarded fans with an exclusive 45 RPM 10-inch vinyl for preordering the album from participating independent record stores. The program was met with rapturous participation, resulting in Vinyl Gratification materials completely selling out within the first week. For those who did not take advantage of Vinyl Gratification, They Want My Soul is now available on iTunesAmazon,www.spoontheband.com and the shelves of your local record store.

Spoon recently put forth the official video for “Do You,” They Want My Soul‘s lead single. View the video now on VEVO.

The band is currently on tour throughout North America. And as ROLLING STONE claims above, “you’d be a fool to miss Spoon in concert if you get the chance”. A complete listing of announced shows can be found below. They Want My Soul

“I don’t know if you’ve ever been in that situation where you knew a record was going to come out at a certain point, and you waited for that day and went to the store and got it on that day. But that was something I used to do, and it was part of a process that made it kind of magical.”— SALON.com interview with Britt Daniel

The revolutionary method of vinyl album preordering is upon us. On its very first day of availability, Spoon’s Vinyl Gratification program is already selling out supplies at record stores across North America!

Developed as an incentive to encourage preordering albums from record stores, Spoon’s Vinyl Gratification initiative rewards fans for frequenting their favorite independent music retailers.

Upon preordering a vinyl copy of Spoon’s forthcoming album, They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista), at a participating record store, fans will be instantly rewarded with a limited edition 45 RPM vinyl 10-inch featuring three songs: “Rent I Pay”, “Inside Out” and the album’s lead single, “Do You”. On or after August 5, those fans who have preordered through the Vinyl Gratification program can return to their record store and get their beautiful 180g white vinyl copy of They Want My Soul.

Daniel explained further to SALON this week, “It bothered me that over and over we were giving these things to these entities that I feel don’t need a break necessarily. And I feel like the record labels and the record stores themselves could stand a break and yet nobody’s giving it to them, and I don’t know, it just seemed like a cool spin on the idea of these instant gratification things that are such a big deal these days.”

Castor, the mastermind behind a certain used Volvo ad (and later, an actual Volvo commercial), has created a video to detail the workings of Spoon’s program. Take a look here and then proceed to a participating record store to make your mark on music history.

They Want My Soul

As reported by billboard.com, Spoon has leveled the digital vs brick and mortar retail playing field by introducing the newly minted Vinyl Gratification program.

The program turns the common practice of incentivizing digital pre-orders with “instant gratification” tracks by offering an indie-retail-only three-song vinyl 10-inch as an instant, well, Vinyl Gratification.

Beginning July 15, participating independent record stores will be listed at vinylgratification.com. Fans who pre-order Spoon’s They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista) will immediately receive the aforementioned limited edition 45 RPM vinyl 10-inch. But that’s not all, folks: On or after They Want My Soul’s August 5 release, those who bring their receipts back to the store where they pre-ordered will receive a stunning 180g white vinyl copy of the LP housed in a heavy 20-pt paper sleeve. Included on the 10″ is the first single from the album “Do You” which can also be heard here.
Britt Daniel says of the initiative:

A few weeks ago as we were figuring out how to roll out the new Spoon album I kept coming back to this: why do we incentivize people to buy our music from big outlets but we don’t extend the same courtesy to actual record stores? Case in point: why do we encourage listeners to buy early by offering “instant gratification” tracks for pre-orders of the digital album, yet there’s no special motivation for buying music from Waterloo or Reckless Records? And there’s no incentive to buy the format that so many of those listeners prefer—an actual physical item they can hold and read and play on a turntable.

So I came up with an idea, and today I’m pretty ecstatic to be able introduce the Vinyl Gratification program. It’s the first program of its kind; it encourages pre-ordering a vinyl copy of our new album They Want My Soul at independent record stores all over the US (and soon, internationally) by providing its own sort of instant gratification: a limited edition 10″ vinyl featuring three pre-release songs from the album that you can take home with you and put on your record player immediately. The great people at Record Store Day have generously offered to spread the word about the program and we’re launching with over 150 stores on board, well beyond our wildest dreams.

To rush this program into existence, we’re releasing the 10″ in a plain white sleeve, but rest assured we’re cutting no corners with regard to the audio. Have you ever noticed the difference in sound quality between 45 RPM and 33 RPM??? Yes, 33 RPM is amazing and warm, but 45 RPM on a larger format disc, with more physical representation of the music via record grooves, delivers even more stunning audio. We think the 10″s sound unbelievable, and we’re pretty sure you will too.

If like me, you’ve ever rushed home with a brand new record that you couldn’t wait to play—and couldn’t actually play until you slapped it onto your turntable—I hope the Vinyl Gratification program will bring back some magic for you. And I hope you’ll join us in supporting the independent record shops that have supported us for so long.

Britt Daniel
Austin, TX
For those hankering for an even more instant bit of gratification ahead of They Want My Soul’s arrival, Spoon will be offering new track “Do You” as a downloadable instant grat. on iTunes, Amazon and Spoon Store with all pre-orders of They Want My Soul. They Want My Soul

“… after what became Spoon’s longest break, the band members were reinvigorated and excited to play together again. They rediscovered an energy, passion and inspired sound, and you can hear that on They Want My Soul.”-NPR All Songs Considered

Spoon will return with their long awaited eighth offering, They Want My Soul, on August 5 via Loma Vista Recordings.

Preorders for the album-lauded by NPR as “unmistakably a Spoon record, with…fantastically infectious grooves and melodies” — are live now at iTunes and Amazon. An exclusive bundle will be available later this week through the band’s store (at www.spoontheband.com) which features, among other desirous items, a limited edition glow-in-the-dark vinyl LP, a t-shirt and handwritten lyric sheets. The first 100 bundle orders will receive an autographed set of lyric sheets. All preorders placed through iTunes and www.spoontheband.com come with an instant download of the album’s lead-off track “Rent I Pay.”

The band has also filmed an unofficial video for They Want My Soul’s “Rent I Pay.” This initial visual offering can be viewed at YouTube.

Britt Daniel and Jim Eno recently talked with Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton for NPR’s All Songs Considered about the recording process behind the record and its sonic elements. The All Songs Considered segment is currently streaming here.

Yesterday afternoon Spoon took to the stage at New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge for a live world premiere performance of “Rent I Pay” for NPR’s First Listen Live. The punchy swagger of “Rent I Pay” in its live unveiling was met with a wildly enthusiastic reception from the privileged few to make it into the intimate venue. For everyone who couldn’t, the performance is streaming now on NPR.

Last weekend, Spoon kicked off a North American festival tour at the Governors Ball festival in New York City. This tour will include appearances at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and the Austin City Limits Music Festival among a host of others. Additionally, the band will headline the special event “They Want My Soul” on the Fairbanks Lawn at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on August 8. Spoon is ramping up the excitement for what is sure to be a memorable 2014 for both the group and its fans. In addition to its previously announced festival and headline engagements, Spoon has just confirmed — via this nifty new teaser video – an August 8 Los Angeles headline show on the beautiful Fairbanks Lawn of the storied Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Tickets for this very special outdoor event — christened “They Want My Soul,” and one of only three performances staged annually on the Fairbanks Lawn — are certain to go quickly and are available Friday, May 9 at 12pm PST. Check Ticketfly for further information.

The Hollywood Forever announcement coincides with Spoon’s first U.S. headline dates since April 2012, beginning (tomorrow) May 7 at Memphis’ Minglewood Hall and including stops May 8 at Marathon Music Works in Nashville and May 10 at the Center Stage Theater in Atlanta. Spoon has also added overseas headline dates on June 2 in London and June 3 in Berlin. For more information on these dates and all others, peruse http://www.spoontheband.com/shows/.
