Adding to the already vibrant and kaleidoscopic sparkle of the original, the “Colors (Picard Brothers Remix)” brings an otherworldliness that only this pairing could conceive.

Following up 2015 GRAMMY Album of the Year winner Morning Phase and featuring “Dreams,” “Wow,” “Dear Life” and “Up All Night” (Beck’s third Billboard Alternative #1), Colors has been hailed as “a great party record” (MC HAMMER) “yet another milestone” (WALL STREET JOURNAL),  “a euphoric blast” (USA TODAY) and a  “classic, sneakily inventive, massively catchy” (AV CLUB) album  “that proves that Beck is still one of rock’s most intrepid inventors” (ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY).

Beck resumes his worldwide tour for Colors after an incredible milestone (not to mention first-ever) performance at the iconic Madison Square Garden which left Rolling Stone raving: A polished, career-spanning performance…emphasized Beck’s unparalleled stylistic versatility.”

“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out. And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying  to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”Dave Grohl

As Foo Fighters wind down another leg of the massive Concrete and Gold tour with a Wrigley Field doubleheader that rocked 75,000+ of Chicago’s FF faithful, Dave Grohl announces an unprecedented new project born of the most challenging performance of his storied career:

“PLAY” is a two part mini-documentary, directed by Grohl with help from his Sound City/Sonic Highways collaborator Mark Monroe, celebrating the rewards and challenges of dedicating ones life to playing and mastering a musical instrument. Part one opens with narrated behind the scenes footage featuring discussion of the love of playing music and the lifelong relationship with an instrument, and detailing the process and challenges of recording and filming this unique performance.

“PLAY” film then segues to the titular 23-minute, one-man-band instrumental recording on which Grohl plays all seven instruments on the track, all live. The entire song was played by Grohl, each time on a different instrument, live for 23 minutes. Beginning with the recording of the entire drum track purely from memory, with no sheet music or guide tracks, followed by guitar, then bass, then keyboards, and so on… Grohl tasked himself with a one-man-band recording session that was forced to start from the very beginning of the 23-minute song any time the slightest mistake was made or if Grohl felt he could do a better take. Concrete and Gold engineer Darrell Thorp was on hand to capture the sounds.

Filmed in classic black and white by Brandon Trost (The Disaster Artist, This is The End), with lighting modulating to match the dramatic peaks and valleys of this epic instrumental, “PLAY” was then edited to feature seven Grohl’s recording together. The “PLAY” online interactive experience offers viewer/listener/participants the options of taking in the mini-doc and Grohl performance as is, focusing on one instrument, and/or downloading “PLAY” sheet music. The online version of “PLAY” also includes a list of organizations where time, money and instruments can be donated to the cause—and places where musicians young and old alike can have the opportunity to play live music.

The challenges Grohl created for himself in creating “PLAY” mirror those taken on by music students every day: The obstacles they face in their daily efforts to elevate and improve their abilities are no different than those faced by a world class stadium rocker—both are striving for the same goals. This shared quest gave “PLAY” its mission to inspire and promote music education: The film is intercut with young musicians from the Join The Band music school in the San Fernando Valley practicing their craft, working relentlessly to get it right, and always coming back to the conclusion that, in Grohl’s words, “‘just like any kid, the reward is just to PLAY.”

Through partnerships with music and media organizations, schools and charities the world over, “PLAY” and its portrait of the joy of playing music should be a catalyst for discussion and action to benefit music education on a global level. Keep your eyes on http://play.roswellfilms.com/ for information on upcoming auctions with proceeds benefiting local music education organizations.

SPIRITUALIZED “Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go” Second Single from And Nothing Hurt New Album Out September 7th on Fat Possum

SPIRITUALIZED
“Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go”
Second Single from And Nothing Hurt
New Album Out September 7th on Fat Possum

Spiritualized has released the track Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go. The new song available NOW follows the double A side A Perfect Miracle/I’m Your Man as the second single from the long awaited new album And Nothing Hurt, to be released in the US September 7th by Fat Possum Records. Pre-order available here: http://smarturl.it/SPIRIT_ANH

From the opening lullaby of A Perfect Miracle through to the fading Morse Code at the close of Sail on Through, Spiritualized wrap layer upon layer of gloriously transcendent sound together to create a mesmerizing and cinematic collection of songs.

There are points – the thunderous climax of On the Sunshine; the spectral waltz of The Prize; the towering guitar solo on I’m Your Man – where the waves of blissful noise are almost overwhelming, where one can imagine the studio’s speakers vibrating themselves off of the walls. Which is an incredible feat when you discover that the album was conceived and recorded almost entirely by one man – Jason Pierce, AKA J. Spaceman – in an upstairs room in his east London home. Sat in an edit suite in Whitechapel a month or so after finishing recording, Jason talks honestly about the painstaking, frustrating process of creating And Nothing Hurt.

“Making this record on my own sent me more mad than anything I’ve done before. We’d been playing these big shows and I really wanted to capture that sound we were making but, without the funds to do, I had to find a way to work within the constraints of what money I had. So I bought a laptop and made it all in a little room in my house.”

Whereas bedroom recording is commonplace for a generation of musicians who’ve grown up with horizon-expanding tech, Spiritualized have long used the studio as they would an extra member of the band – as a vital building block in the construction of some of the most cherished records of the modern era. This time would be very different. With no grounding in digital recording, Jason had to learn everything from scratch.

“The biggest thing for me was to try to make it sound like a studio session. But I was new to it all, I didn’t have all the short cuts people use as when they’re making records – I just sat there for weeks… for months… moving every level up bit by bit just to try to get the sounds right.”

Of “Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go”, Jason Pierce says, “Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go is a list of instructions that, if followed, allows the listener to find my house. The route is real but it’s on the west coast of America so the house being mine is a fiction. I love the line about the cop waiting up all night to add to his total busts for the day. I wanted it to all end in happiness but it leaves with just a small trace of sadness.’”

(photocredit Juliette Larthe)

For the listener, the nine tracks on And Nothing Hurt effortlessly replicate the scale and power of Spiritualized’s previous releases, whether it’s the sonic blowback of On the Sunshine, the last dime in the jukebox love letter of Let’s Dance or the swell of an imaginary orchestra that seems to lift Damaged towards the heavens as it plays out.

“With a bit of trial and lot of error, I found ways of doing something that’s quite simple if you’ve got the resources. I spent two weeks listening to classical records and strumming the chord that I wanted on my guitar. When I found something to match what i wanted, I’d sample that bit and go for the next chord and try to match that. It took weeks, trying to put together and layer convincing string sounds. But, if I’m honest, all I wanted was for someone to come and play the part and bring their own thing to the record.”

Lyrically, And Nothing Hurt touches on thoughts of passing time and acceptance of one’s age – never more beautifully than on Let’s Dance. “I didn’t want to be fighting against my age; it’s very much about acceptance. And not with any dissatisfaction either – I’m not raging against the inevitable. I spent a lot of time thinking about the way that the songs should hold together, trying to make the narratives make sense rather than just throwing together a couple of lines that rhymed.”

During the making of And Nothing Hurt, Jason kept returning to the thought that this would be the last Spiritualized record – interviews over the last couple of years made it clear that the frustration of trying to replicate the sounds in his head whilst sat on his bed were proving too much.

“I was quite sincere about that and I still feel like it might be the case. It was such hard work. I found myself going crazy for so long. It’s not like there’s no coming back, I’m fine now… it’s just such a hard thing to do, to make a record like this on your own. It’s almost as if, if I’m not pushing myself to point of madness, it’s not going to be right. And I know it’s going to be like that every time. What’s the definition of madness? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I kind of do that. I think the biggest goal is to make something that’s worthy of all that time and effort. And the more time and effort, the bigger the goal. I knew I had to make something that was good enough that it should be made. And a massive positive about making the record is that we get to play it live. That’s always the most joyous thing; everyone gets to contribute to the sound, this amazing thing that seems to come right through the roof.”

Spiritualized previously shared a video for  “I’m Your Man”, directed by Juliette Larthe, which can be viewed HERE, and announced news of select live performances in support of the album, including a headline shows at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. U2 & Broken Fingaz Crew Reunite

Animated Video for “Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way (Beck Remix)” Out Now

‘The door is open to go through
If I could I would come too
But the path is made by you
As you‘re walking, start singing and stop talking…’

Earlier this year Beck joined forces with U2 to remix “Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way” from the international #1 album, Songs of Experience (Interscope). The GRAMMY Album of the Year winning musician dug deep to expose the organic foundation underpinning the soaring harmonies of the anthem spurring nightly sing-alongs on the current eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour.

Now, Broken Fingaz Crew, the fearless Israeli graffiti collective who previously collaborated with U2 on the “American Soul” and “Get Out Of Your Own Way” videos, have created a visual re-imagination of similar impact. The infectious sonic optimism of the U2 + Beck remix is translated once again into a dizzying dreamscape, where turbulent seas and dancing skeletons ultimately give way to a message of hope.

Known only by the pseudonyms that preserve their anonymity with local authorities – Unga, Tant, Kip and Desco — the enigmatic Broken Fingaz Crew’s groundbreaking street art in their native Haifa inspired U2 to give them full creative control to visually interpret these songs.  The results have continually reaffirmed Broken Fingaz Crew’s standing as artistic and social pioneers emerging from an underground of their own creation.

FRIDAY NIGHT PARTY WITH BILLY IDOL, BRIDGET EVERETT, MEXRRISSEY & OTHERS TBA

OCTOBER 5-6, 2018 AT GLEN HELEN REGIONAL PARK

TICKETS ON SALE THIS THURSDAY AT 10AM PST

A year after the legendary debut weekend from which 30,000+ true rock believers have barely recovered… Cal Jam 18 is back for another weekend of joyful rock-n-roll abandon featuring 20+ bands on four stages this October 5-6, 2018. Promoted by Live Nation, the festival returns to Glen Helen Regional Park and Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA, for an even more monolithic second incarnation of what the Los Angeles Times cited as the reason fans “come to music festivals: to feel connection and catharsis.”

Today, the festival has announced its guitars, guitars and more guitars lineup with Foo Fighters back as headliners and curators, and another once in a lifetime bill that proves that rock-n-roll is alive and well in California. The good times come at the affordable price of $99 (plus taxes and fees) for one day GA. This year, Saturday ticket holders have the option to buy a Friday night ticket for $30 (plus taxes and fees). All camping packages include free entrance to the Friday night Party.  Tickets and camping packages go on sale this Thursday, May 17th at 10AM PST. Visit www.caljamfest.com and www.LiveNation.com for more information.

The good times begin with the Friday night party on October 5th, where those with camping passes and Friday night tickets will be invited to kick off the festival with 80s punk legend Billy Idol. Also on the bill is Bridget Everett, the comedian who Jerry Seinfeld called, “one of the greatest live performers I have ever seen in my life,” and Mexico City’sMexrrissey, performing their set of Smiths and Morrissey cover songs in Spanish, plus so much more. Friday night attendees will also have first crack at the carnival rides and the Rock-N-Roll Museum.

On Saturday, October 6th, Cal Jam will continue last year’s tradition of a 12-hour rock extravaganza where anything can happen—literally anything: last year saw the likes of Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Rick Astley, Dave Koz, Liam Gallagher and more joining the Foo Fighters on stage (yes, all during the same show). Foo Fighters will close the proceedings with one of their traditional rock marathons, bringing back what Forbes called “another great rock and roll party from the band who does them better than anyone else today.” And where last year’s inaugural festival was the beginning of the Foo Fighters’ Concrete and Gold Tour, this year’s appearance brings it full circle as the tour’s final show in the LA area.

This year Dave Grohl and crew will have set themselves up to play after literally the single hardest act to follow in the history of live music: the legendary Iggy Pop. Iggy’s Cal Jam 18 performance will be an exclusive one-off reunion with the all-star Post Pop Depression band that backed him on the handful of shows played in support of the album of the same name, featuring Queens of The Stone Age’s Joshua Homme, Dean Fertita and Troy Van Leeuwen and Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders.

The incomparable Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D will bring ‘The Metal’ to the masses, and alternative pop-rock icons Garbage will be bring their powerhouse live show to the stage. Also joining the bill will be some of the best that rock and roll has to offer from around the world with the likes of Greta Van Fleet, Silversun Pickups, Manchester Orchestra, Krist Novoselic’s new band Giant In The Trees, Slaves (UK), Gang of Youths, Black Mountain and more performing throughout the day. See full list below.

In addition to the full day of shred, the festival will include a number of activities open to attendees. Campers will be treated to outdoor midnight movies and access to the water park, as well as the newly christened Friday Night Comedy Tent curated by comedian Tim Hanlon (aka Dave’s cousin). Stay tuned for the full schedule to be announced!  All ticket holders will be able to enjoy the site’s free carnival rides, the Rock-N-Roll museum, pop up record shop and a hillside full of flappy guys. Because we can. For those who are looking to imbibe in tasty eats and cold drinks, Cal Jam 18 offers a wide variety of curated food trucks, traditional festival food, and all sorts of delicious cold beer.
