BOB MOULD

CAL JAM 17 & HEADLINE DATES THROUGH OCTOBER

33 1/3: WORKBOOK TO BE PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 7 BY BLOOMSBURY

The ever tireless Bob Mould has added a handful of Pacific Northwest headline dates and an appearance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival to his October touring calendar.

That same weekend will see Bob and band heading to Golden Gate Park for an October 8 set at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2017. Bob will round out October with a trio of solo shows in the Pacific Northwest: October 20 at Doug Fir in Portland, October 21 at The Crocodile in Seattle, and October 22 at the Rickshaw Theater in Vancouver, BC.

The newly announced October dates are the last scheduled appearances on a marathon run touched off with the March 2016 release of Patch The Sky on Merge Records. Hailed upon its release as “conjuring the ecstatic rage of his earlier bands for a grim new era” in a four-star ROLLING STONE review and as “tight, sharp musings on aging, fizzled relationships and death that are melodic enough to sound like songs of victory” by THE NEW YORK TIMES, Patch The Sky completed a trilogy including its 2014 predecessor Beauty & Ruin and 2012’s Silver Age. Bob and the band commemorated Patch The Sky’s release with an April 25 debut performance on Late Show with Stephen Colbert, offering up not only a fiery rendition of “The End Of Things” but also a gratis session of backstage guitar lessons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH6-hz4WuG8

A month to the day before Cal Jam kicks off the October dates, Bob’s classic 1989 solo debut Workbook will be the subject of the latest in the prestigious 33 1/13 book series. Written by Walter Biggins and Daniel Couch, 33 1/3: Workbook will be published September 7 by Bloomsbury and will see Workbook added to the storied 33 1/13 bibliography alongside the likes of The Smiths’ Meat Is Murder, The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Electric Ladyland, The Beatles’ Let It Be, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Radiohead’s OK Computer, Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures and The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street to name but a few. For further information, go to https://333sound.com/2017/07/27/introducing-our-33-13-on-bob-moulds-workbook/

Finally, Bob has signed on to produce the new album for Fury Things, the Minneapolis rock trio who supported Bob’s live shows in 2014 and 2016. Sessions have been slated at Tiny Telephone in Oakland and Different Fur in San Francisco in October, marking the first time Bob has served a producer for a fellow artist since his work with Vic Chesnutt and Verbow more than 20 years ago.

On November 5th, Bob Mould will be kicking off his last run of tour dates on what has been a rip-roaring series of shows in support of his album Patch The Sky (Merge). From headline sets at packed clubs to a recent main stage set before tens of thousands at Riot Fest Chicago, critical and popular response to Bob’s recent live shows has consistently matched the energy and vitality put forth on each and every performance:

“The guitarist spun his bearish frame on one foot, as if being knocked around by the hurricane force of his solos. The notes poured out in thick, hyperspeed flurries. His attack conjured a 10-car pileup of tones and overtones, an orchestra of reverberation. There were two speeds –- fast and fastest -– as the bespectacled 55-year-old blended the blast-furnace intensity of hardcore with classic pop hooks.” – CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“Mould had his amp cranked up loud and ripped more than a few sick leads when he wasn’t on the mic.” – LA RECORD

“Bob Mould and his crack-backing band attacked everything at full velocity, making it all sound like the work of a scrappy basement punk band determined to break through and conquer the world…Mould is on a hell of a run in both the studio and on the stage at the moment. His song craft and energy shame most younger acts and most of his veteran peers. – STEREOGUM

While in Los Angeles for his debut performance at The Hollywood Bowl, Bob and longtime band members bassist Jason Narducy and drummer Jon Wurster filmed an episode for “Last Call With Carson Daly” at The Echoplex. Watch their high-octane performances of “Black Confetti” and “The Descent”.

The tireless power trio that is the Bob Mould band added several new engagements to its fall tour in support of Mould’s critically acclaimed Patch The Sky (Merge)—recently named one of the Top 50 Albums of 2016 so far by Rolling Stone. Adding to an itinerary including numerous headline shows as well as stops at Riot Fest in Chicago and a first ever appearance at the Hollywood Bowl, new headline dates have now been confirmed in November in Dallas, Atlanta, Athens, Nashville and Carrboro.

Upon the March release of Patch The Sky, Bob and longtime bandmates Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster hit the road for a string of the powerhouse shows for which they’ve become notorious. Critical praise has consistently reflected the peerless Bob mould live experience:

“The guitarist spun his bearish frame on one foot, as if being knocked around by the hurricane force of his solos. The notes poured out in thick, hyperspeed flurries. His attack conjured a 10-car pileup of tones and overtones, an orchestra of reverberation. There were two speeds –- fast and fastest -– as the bespectacled 55-year-old blended the blast-furnace intensity of hardcore with classic pop hooks.”

– CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“There wasn’t an acoustic guitar within a million miles of First Ave that night. The headliners tore through 30-some-odd years of Mould’s catalog with fierce, amplified resolve.”

– MINNEAPOLIS CITY PAGES

“Watching Narducy and Wurster work the stage is certainly a sight to behold in its own right. Narducy’s bass playing coupled with the ferocious percussive assault on the drums provided by Wurster keep time for the whole Mould stage show with the spot-on perfect sound and big time rock show fury one would expect in a room like the Paradise with a seasoned vet like Mould at the helm.”

– VANYALAND

“Mould had his amp cranked up loud and ripped more than a few sick leads when he wasn’t on the mic. Jason Narducy dished his basslines as he tossed himself about the stage. Jon Wurster pounded away on his drum set keeping a fast pace for most of the night.”

– LA RECORD

BOB MOULD MAKES HIS DEBUT APPEARANCE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
CBS SATURDAY MORNING SEGMENT TO AIR APRIL 30

BOB MOULD CUSTOM GUITAR PEDAL “SKY PATCH” ON SALE NOW

Last night, Bob Mould and his bandmates Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster returned to the stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater, making their first Late Show appearance since Stephen Colbert took the desk. The resultant fiery rendition of “The End Of Things” from Bob’s acclaimed new album Patch The Sky (Merge) can be seen HERE.

Bob also was on hand to give some backstage guitar lessons while in the Green Room, see if you can follow along HERE.

Last week Bob Mould kicked off a North American tour in support of Patch The Sky. Kicking off in Madison, WI, the tour quickly took an intense turn as the band coincidentally found themselves playing the famed First Ave in Minneapolis the day after Prince’s death. Through a purple haze the band played some of the most cathartic shows in Minneapolis’ history. As Minneapolis City Pages reported, “Part of it might have been the Irish wake atmosphere palpable both inside and outside the club. Prince was being honored, remembered, and celebrated. The other part was the sheer power of the musicianship on display. Together, they conspired to deliver the magic of the evening.” CBS Saturday Morning was on site to capture the majestic evening and will air its segment on Bob Mould this Saturday, April 30th.

Additionally, as reported by Guitar World – Bob has collaborated with Australian guitar pedal manufacturer Tim Brennan on a custom limited edition pedal called the “Sky Patch”. The pedal will be available for purchase now. Bob says of the collaboration:

I first became acquainted with Tim’s pedals during a tour stop in Brisbane, Australia in 2013. Tim brought a limited edition Tymexar St. Paul Distortion pedal to the venue as a gift. Once I returned to the US and spent some time with the pedal, I was very impressed by the craftsmanship and sound quality. It quickly replaced my trusted MXR Distortion+ pedals during the “Beauty & Ruin” recording sessions.

In 2014, Tim designed the “Beauty & Ruin” pedal sold exclusively through Tim Guitars. All the pedals were quickly purchased — as are all of Tim’s custom designs.

For the new album, we worked together to design the “Sky Patch” — a slightly modified version of the previous pedals. This limited edition run of the “Sky Patch” pedal comes with a T-shirt featuring the face place artwork. These shirts will not be reproduced beyond this single production run.

With the “Sky Patch”, Tim has updated what I consider to be the best distortion pedal ever — the MXR Distortion+ — into a tighter, fuller, and more focused stomp box. It’s ready for the road, the studio, or the comfort of your own rehearsal space. I hope you appreciate Tim’s work as much as I have over the last three years!

Tim Brennan of Tym Guitars says of the collaboration:

The limited edition Tym Sky Patch is based on one of my old early 80’s MXR Dist + circuits that became the basis for the Beauty & Ruin signature pedal. This new Sky Patch uses my own specially designed and made PCB’s with quality, low tolerance parts throughout. This version of the classic distortion uses the original LM741CN IC as used in the original script logo MXR’s to push silicon diodes into warm, but crisp clipping and delivers more overall volume than the originals. It’s housed in my custom handmade stainless steel enclosures with standard “BOSS” style 9V input jack and special blue LED with artwork based on the new Bob Mould album.

“Hold On,” the latest single from Bob Mould’s critically acclaimed—and recent #1 selling vinyl LP and U.S. Top 100-charting—latest album Patch The Sky (Merge), is also the first track written for the album. Originally conceived by Mould in 2013 as a downtempo acoustic track, the song has since seen a radical transformation into an anthem of hope. Today it is released in all of its glory along with a video interpretation directed by Alicia J. Rose which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=UHgYceWTmms

Still plagued by the inner spirits that first appeared in the clip for Patch The Sky’s “Voices In My Head,” Part Two of this video series sees Bob’s unmistakable guitar signatures throughout “Hold On” serve as the tools to fend off his demons… while within in an alternate universe playing in a bar for bearded doppelgangers all in plaid, and even a gentleman in white formalwear toasting a life sized rat.

Before Bob Mould and stalwart bandmates Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster hit the road next week and begin their U.S. tour in Madison, WI,  Bob will venture out for a solo electric headlining set at a celebratory concert in honor of the grand opening of Seattle’s own KEXP and their brand new home. “Over the years, KEXP has broadcast live sessions with me from all over the US: studios in NYC, clubs in Portland OR, and festivals such as Bumbershoot and Sasquatch,” says Mould. “I’m thrilled to be part of the grand opening of the new KEXP location.” All live performances will be broadcast on KEXP 90.3 FM Seattle and KEXP.ORG

The band will also be making an April 25th stop at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert before making his way back across the country to play to sold out rooms in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco among others. Later this fall the Bob and the band are scheduled to make their debut appearance at the famed Hollywood Bowl to play KCRW’s World Festival.

Yesterday, Stereogum broke the news of Patch The Sky in the form of a Cover Story for which Bob took writer Ryan Leas on a historical walking tour of Bob’s own New York. Over the course of an epic day’s journey covering multiple locations and eras throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, Bob offered up unique insight into his singular personal history and experiences that have informed his present and future. His overall approach to writing, how his work always catalogues his life, this “third act” resurgence he’s found himself in were all explored—including Patch The Sky’s place on the ongoing saga and the power he finds working with his longtime band in the studio and onstage.

Speaking of… Bob Mould’s 2016 tour dates in support of Patch The Sky have been confirmed and are detailed below.

WORLD TOUR KICKS OFF TONIGHT IN PHILADELPHIA

Bob Mould has unveiled a new video for “The War” off his critically-lauded album Beauty & Ruin (Merge). The video, which captures the sweaty, rollicking shows Bob and his band are known to put on, as well as other aspects of touring life, is directed by Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke). Stay tuned until the grand finale, when a special guest makes a sly appearance. Join Bob and his bandmates Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster on tour in “The War“.

Bob and director Dave Markey will chat with fans on September 9 at 3:30pm EST during a Reddit AMA session. Ask Bob and Dave any burning questions you have pertaining to the new video, Beauty & Ruin, the history of Punk Rock or just about anything else.

Experience the exciting and cathartic nature of Bob’s live show when he brings it to a nearby city. As the Minneapolis Star Tribune witnessed over Labor Day Weekend during a secret show that was announced the day prior and took a mere10 minutes to sell out:

“Mould didn’t allow his bandmates time to catch their breath during most of the first set before tearing into the next song. There was even less room in the second run… he struggled to read the set list at his feet toward show’s end, but that was because he had to take off his glasses. No exaggeration: The lenses kept fogging up from the steam coming off the stage.”

Live Nation and Yahoo will be live-streaming the September 5 kick-off of Bob and the band’s next run of dates in its entirety live from the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia. This Bob Mould event is one of 365 concerts to stream over a 12-month period on the Live Nation Channel on Yahoo Screen, and will go live at 10:10pm EST/7:10pm PST on September 5 at https://screen.yahoo.com/live/event/bob-mould.

“Mould is on a roll… ranks up there with his catchiest…  joyously unconcerned with proving anything to anyone other than the fact that he can still craft hook after hook.” — PITCHFORK

“The former Sugar and Hüsker Dü frontman sounds fully invigorated here… Mould rips through 12 bristling guitar-pop tracks that, at their propulsive and tuneful best, recall the classic eras of his much-loved former bands.” – ROLLING STONE

“It doesn’t feel like a stretch to say Beauty & Ruin scrapes the same eight-miles-high stratosphere as his best work with Hüsker Dü, Sugar, and under his own name… vital music from a living legend – a master class in the sort of gleaming, guitar-powered alt-rock that Mould helped to invent.” – STEREOGUM
