THIRD MAN BOOKS PRESENTS

HIDDEN WATER: FROM THE FRANK STANFORD ARCHIVES

TMR003-FrankStanford-HiddenWaters-Cover-550

Third Man Books is very proud to announce pre-sales for their third title, Hidden Water: From the Frank Stanford Archives. Stanford is a personal favorite of many at Third Man Books, and this title has been an endeavor taken on with a special touch. The book features unpublished poems, drafts, letters, and the first publicly heard AUDIO RECORDING of Stanford reciting. The recording will be made available on the book’s street date of July 21.

“The big event in poetry for 2015 will likely be the long-awaited resurrection of Frank Stanford, a legendary badass from Arkansas, much of whose poetry has been unavailable since his suicide at the age of 29 in 1978… Stanford was a hell of a metaphor-maker and simile-slinger, and could cast a spell of extreme intensity with a flick of his wrist.”—NPR.org

“His love poems can sound like the cry of an angel falling backward through an open window, to borrow Dwight Yoakam’s line about Roy Orbison’s voice… Mr. Stanford could lose his heart without blowing his cool.”—New York Times, 2015

“…It is astounding to me that I was not even aware of this accomplished and moving poet. There is a great deal of pain on the poems, but it is a pain that makes sense, a tragic pain whose meaning rises from the way the poems are so firmly molded and formed from within.”—James Wright.

Edited by Michael Wiegers and Chet Weise, Hidden Water: From the Frank Stanford Archives is a collection of unpublished poems, drafts, never before seen photos, and correspondences between Stanford, Allen Ginsberg, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Alan Dugan, and more. Copper Canyon Press and Third Man Books have collaborated to make Hidden Water not only a must have book on its own, but a must have complement to Copper Canyon’s definitive Stanford collection What About This.

In addition to Hidden Water being made available as a stand alone title, we are offering a Hidden Water Special Edition featuring two books of Frank Stanford’s work: Third Man Books own Hidden Water is bundled in a custom slipcase with the 764 page hardcover title What About This published by Copper Canyon Press. Also included are two framable broadsides featuring poems and artwork by Stanford, and, to top it off, a reproduction of Stanford’s own notepad. Pre-order the Special Edition HERE.

Born in 1948, Frank Stanford was a prolific poet known for his originality and ingenuity. He has been dubbed “a swamprat Rimbaud” by Lorenzo Thomas and “one of the great voices of death” by Franz Wright. He grew up in Mississippi, Tennessee, and then Arkansas, where he lived for most of his life and wrote many of his most powerful poems. Stanford died in 1978. He authored over ten books of poetry, including eight volumes in the last seven years of his life.

FEATURE FILM TO RELEASE IN THEATERS WORLDWIDE FROM SEPTEMBER 24TH

This autumn, Grammy Award-winning band Arcade Fire will release their first feature film, The Reflektor Tapes, in theaters around the world from September 24th for a limited time only.

The Reflektor Tapes is directed by 2013 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Short Films winner Kahlil Joseph, and produced by award-winning studio Pulse Films (20,000 Days on Earth, Shut Up And Play The Hits) and What Matters Most. It is a film quite unlike any other; an authentic cinematic experience, meeting at the crossroads of documentary, music, art and personal history. The release will be brought to screens by leading Event Cinema distributor Arts Alliance. Screening for a short time only, it bucks traditional film rollout convention, creating a unique cinema event to be shared by audiences around the world.

The Reflektor Tapes is a fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s critically acclaimed, international #1 album Reflektor. The film recontextualizes the album experience, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape. It charts the band’s creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, commence recording sessions in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel on the first night of Carnival, before bringing their breathtaking live show to packed arenas in Los Angeles and London.

Audiences will relive stunning concerts from the Reflektor tour, re-envisioned in true cinema high definition and surround sound. The film will also offer a rare opportunity for fans to delve beneath the surface and get closer to the band themselves. With Arcade Fire granting previously unprecedented access to Joseph, The Reflektor Tapes fluidly blends in never before seen personal footage, including interviews, documentation of the recording process and moments captured by the band themselves, to dazzling effect.

Arcade Fire said of the film: “There were parts of the Reflektor tour where I think we, Arcade Fire, came the closest in our careers to putting on stage what we imagined in our heads. We were insanely lucky to have Kahlil Joseph documenting from the very beginning.”

In addition to showcasing music from Reflektor and other albums in Arcade Fire’s storied back catalogue, The Reflektor Tapes will also give viewers a chance to hear a brand new, unreleased track for the first time and features an exclusive 20 minutes of unseen footage, filmed only for cinema audiences.

To accompany the film announcement, Arcade Fire have also released an exclusive new music video for the track “Porno”, created by Kahlil Joseph and featuring footage from The Reflektor Tapes.

If one is Beck, it’s with the 180-degree turn “Dreams,” a 5-minute psych-pop dance party tour de force that has just broken the five million stream mark, averaging 1.5 million streams weekly since its June 15 release—a number that has increased with each week. Beck’s second #1 single at AAA radio (the first being Morning Phase’s “Blue Moon”), “Dreams” is Beck’s first new music since Morning Phase’s GRAMMY hat trick earlier this year.

THE DEAD WEATHER ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DODGE & BURN

SPECIAL DODGE & BURN VAULT PACKAGE AVAILABLE NOW AT http://thirdmanstore.com/vault/vault-subscriptions/tmr-vault-platinum-subscription

Cover_Reg_IV

Way back in October 2013, The Dead Weather and Third Man Records announced an incredibly special 7” featuring “Open Up (That’s Enough)” b/w “Rough Detective” as part of Vault Package #18. These two tracks were a fierce battle cry heralding the announcement of a brand new Dead Weather album that was to be released in a revolutionary fashion. Teased out over the past year and a half via a series of 7” singles, the physical versions of which were ONLY available via The Vault (Third Man’s one-of-a-kind subscription mail-order service), the band promised this would culminate in a brand new album in 2015. The third Dead Weather LP would be a full length album comprised not only of the previously released 7” singles, but newly recorded, previously-unheard material. Today, The Dead Weather officially announce their new album Dodge & Burn.

Dodge & Burn will be released worldwide in September 2015 on Third Man Records online casino and will feature eight brand new songs, along with the four previously released tracks remixed and remastered. Alison Mosshart, Jack White, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence spent their rare and sporadic free moments over the past year recording together in Nashville. With the members of the band heavily involved in other projects, The Dead Weather will not be touring in support of the new album. Thankfully the thick and heavy Dodge & Burn will satisfy your urges for the dark magic that is The Dead Weather for a very long time.

The ONLY special, limited edition version of the new album will be released as Vault Package #25, which will arrive the same week as the standard album release in September. The Dodge & Burn Vault Package will include:

-A limited edition Dodge & Burn LP on Inclement Weather vinyl (that is to say opaque yellow with black ‘debris’) housed in a soft-touch embossed sleeve featuring metallic ink and a Vault-exclusive alternate cover designed by Rob Jones, also featuring a limited edition bonus poster inside.

-The only physical version of the new Dead Weather 7” and single from Dodge & Burn on yellow vinyl with black debris.

-A deck of custom Dead Weather playing cards designed by Silent Giants featuring the band members as the King, Queen, Jack and Joker. Previously released in limited numbers and now, due to popular demand, re-issued for the Vault only with new packaging artwork.

Subscriptions for Vault Package #25 are open until July 31st, visit http://thirdmanstore.com/vault/vault-subscriptions/tmr-vault-platinum-subscription to sign up now! And if you need a reminder of what you’re in for, here are some clips of the previously released tracks from the upcoming album: https://soundcloud.com/thirdmanrecords/sets/dead-weather-dodge-burn-vault

DFA1979---APPROVED-#1

Jesse Keeler and Sebastien Grainger are international men of mystery (they’re from Canada) who dip their toes into whatever damn waters they please (MSTRKRFT, Deserts/Bad Tits, Femme Fatale, The Mountains, Black Cat No.13), and who know how to pen a song that’ll get you off your ass and make you feel things. That’s all we really want in a song… how about you? A decade after a sudden break up (following the release of their rich and gritty first record You’re A Woman, I’m a Machine, tours with Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age, and one foot in the door of the mainstream) Death From Above 1979 reunited and released their second LP The Physical World last Fall. The duo has picked right up where they left off and are hitting the road this Summer. Amidst their resurgence in which they claim their rightful place among Bands Who Are Worth A Damn And Will Prove It To You, DFA 1979 are swinging through Nashville prepared to record direct-to-acetate in the Third Man Records Blue Room with ten years of lost time to recover and a fresh perspective. We can’t wait to see it, cut it, and share it with the world.

A MESSAGE FROM DAVE GROHL:

http://foofighters.com/operation

Hey everyone….

Your old pal, Dave here. Been a while, eh? It’s been one hell of a year, that’s for sure. Looks like we’ve got some serious catching up to do! Hmmm, let’s see…..where do I begin?

Drumroll, please….

The funniest thing happened to me the other day in Sweden!

Two songs into our set at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, I made a mad dash to the right of the stage during MONKEY WRENCH to shred some tasty licks for the kids up front. It was a beautiful night, beautiful stadium, 52,000 screaming people….dream gig! Well….wait for it….I definitely shredded something (ZING!) Wound up feet first over the Edge (pun intended), dropping about 12 feet, dislocating my ankle and snapping my fibula like an old pair of take out chopsticks. Whoopsie daisy. Not good. Without realizing the extent of my injuries, I stood up to get back onstage and crumbled like a sack of Joe Theismanns (look it up, kiddies). That shit was B-R-O-K-E.

As I lay there on my back, I just thought, “Are you kidding me? We haven’t even gotten to the screamy bit of the song and the gig is fucking OVER?” So, I asked for a microphone and told the audience I’d get fixed up and come right back to finish the show ASAP. Shock? Probably. But, I couldn’t stand the thought of such a perfect night going to waste! I looked at our drummer Taylor and said, “Bust out some Chevy Metal covers while they fix me up!” So, as the band kicked in to “Stay With Me” by The Faces, the medics poured me onto a stretcher, took me off to the side, cut my favorite pants off (so bummed) and popped my ankle back into place. I asked if I could get back onstage to finish the show, but they said I needed a cast (which was 20 minutes away at the hospital) to hold my ankle in place. So I looked my EMT, Johan in the eyes and said “Well, then you’re coming up there with me right now and holding it in place until they can bring the cast here. Ready?” He stared at me wide-eyed for a second and said, “OK, lets’ go…”

I don’t know who was more scared, me or Johan. 5 minutes later, I don’t know who was having more fun, me or Johan. (I actually looked at him in between songs and said “This is pretty fun, isn’t it?” He smiled and nodded yes.)

Like clockwork, the cast arrived, I walked offstage for a song or two as they put it on me, and then came back to finish the gig. Let’s just say that singing our song “Walk” with a straight face was pretty goddamned hard. “These Days” was a good one, too. (Easy for you to say! Your leg has never been broken!) All in all, it was without a doubt the single most bizarre Foo Fighters show in the entire 20 years of being a band. Hands down. What seemed like a tragedy at first turned into a triumph, and we all walked away with a new sense of appreciation for what we’ve got…

Straight to the hospital for x-rays, where we finally saw the extent of the damage. That’s when things got really real. I was told I needed surgery to fix the break. I decided to fly back to London and find a doctor that could see me ASAP. (Thanks for the recommendation, Paul!) An MRI and a few x-rays later, we set a date and prepared for the operation.

Operation went well. Had a great team and nice stay in hospital. Good curry, too! Thank you to everyone involved.

So….here I am, recovering with 6 metal screws in my leg, thinking about a lifetime of holding up TSA lines from here to Kalamazoo….damn.

Here’s the not so witty bit…….My doctors have advised me to lay low for a while. The most important thing now is for me to recover from the surgery, to keep my leg elevated so as to keep swelling down and prevent any infection/complication that could do long term damage. I’m not out of the woods yet, folks…

Which means, and it kills me to say it…..the doctors have told us to cancel shows. I’m really so sorry, guys. You know I hate to do it, but I’m afraid it’s just not physically possible for me at the moment. We’re doing our best right now to work out a plan, so bear with us. You know we’re good for our word. But for now, I need to make sure we have YEARS of gigs ahead of us….

You have always stood by our band, and we will always stand by you. Like I say at every show, we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you guys. And I mean that. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I will do everything I can to come back and give you a night to remember for the rest of your lives AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Until then…my sincerest apologies.

Your friend, Dave

PS…….Kanye…..Imma let you have this one…..

“Blur’s classic lineup—singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree—has made its first new album in 16 years, one as quixotic and seductive in its modern searching and subversive pop highs as those Nineties winners… Blur have returned with inspiration to spare.” — ROLLING STONE

With 5-star rave live reviews for recent shows* and a historic fourth headline appearance at London’s Hyde Park set for this weekend and having recently performed its new album The Magic Whip at an exclusive NYC Converse Rubber Tracks Live gig, the classic Blur lineup–Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree—has confirmed a pair of iconic dates at two of America’s most famous venues: October 20 at the Hollywood Bowl and October 23 at Madison Square Garden.

Tickets to the shows–the biggest standalone headlines Blur has ever played in the U.S. and the band’s only currently scheduled Stateside dates—will be on sale 10am local time June 20 at http://www.blur.co.uk/tour.

In other Blur news, the band has released its official comic book Travel to Hong Kong with Blur. Created by famed Hong Kong artist Kongkee of Penguin Lab and inspired by The Magic WhipTravel to Hong Kong with Blur is available for purchase at http://shop.blur.co.uk/ and will be sold at the U.S. dates.

Released April 28, The Magic Whip (Warner Bros) entered the Billboard 200 at #12—the highest U.S. chart position of Blur’s career—and generated unanimous critical raves, including:

“Something special happens when these four get in a room… Blur’s always been puckish in spirit, its greatest gift the identification and gleeful subversion of listener expectations, and in moments like these it re-emerges, untarnished by the passage of time.”—PITCHFORK

“A weird, lovely return to form… immersive, complex, and understatedly lovely… Sharp and uncompromising, The Magic Whip is here to deliver some good news: Blur is once again a four-letter word.”—NEW YORK

“The members of Blur have been connected — in some form or another — for four decades. Now, they’re officially reformed, in more ways than one, and as great as they’ve ever been.”—GRANTLAND

“It is hard to overstate how well the four core members of Blur complement each other… a communion of all that makes Blur indispensable in rock.”—ESQUIRE

“There isn’t a bad song in the bunch, and several are as good as anything they’ve ever done… there’s real joy here, too, the joy of a successful reunion… taps into the 1 + 1 = 20 chemistry that distinguishes the best rock bands.”—THE NEW YORK OBSERVER

“Most rock ‘n’ roll reunions are accompanied by great fanfare and, let’s face it, lousy music. Blur has turned that equation on its head.”—ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Magic Whip started life in Hong Kong in sessions during an unexpected break in touring in May 2013. The band spent five days at Avon Studios in Kowloon before putting the recordings aside and carrying on with their live dates and returning to their respective lives: Dave to his day job as a lawyer, Alex to his Oxfordshire farm, newspaper column and the hosting duties on The Big Feastival that he shares with Jamie Oliver. Graham, who has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums to date, continued to work on his own material and, in 2014, Damon released and toured his Mercury-nominated debut solo albumEveryday Robots.

Graham revisited the tracks in November 2014 and, drafting in Blur’s early producer Stephen Street (LeisureModern Life is RubbishParklifeThe Great EscapeBlur), worked with the band on the material. Damon then added lyrics to the 12 tracks, completing The Magic Whip—Blur’s eighth album and first since 1999’s 13 to feature the original Blur lineup.

DAVE GROHL’S BIG BREAK

June 14 Pinkpop Festival & June 16 St. Gallen, Switzerland Shows Canceled

As witnessed by tens of thousands in attendance at Foo Fighters’ June 12 show at Ullevi Stadium, Dave Grohl took a nasty spill during the second song of the set. With the help of on-site medical staff who patched him up temporarily, Dave was able to rejoin the band to complete that performance.

While the full extent of Dave’s injuries are still being determined, it was confirmed at a post-show hospital visit that he sustained at least one fracture.

As a result Foo Fighters have been forced to cancel their June 14 appearance at the Pinkpop Festival as well as their June 16 show at the AFG Arena in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
