“The best garage band in America since the ’60s. Very primitive…they made people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots.” – Jack White
The Gories began in the cultural vacuum of Detroit in 1986. With humble beginnings at a community concert series through a tumultuous end on their 1992 European tour, this is a band whose influence has far outstretched the ground they covered. Rooted in the primal, primitive underpinnings of 50’s rhythm and blues and unhinged 60s garage punk, the sound the came to was wholly their own. Over two years in the making, Third Man collectively feels like a bunch of teenage fanboys with the release of The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit 5/27/88. Recorded at house party in a converted store front, the band captured here is at the height of their powers. Featuring covers of classics by the likes of John Lee Hooker, the Stooges and Willie Dixon, as well as a bevy of their oft-imitated originals, Live in Detroit 5/27/88 is the Gories first live album, their fourth full-length and their first widespread release since 1992. While band members Mick Collins and Dan Kroha would go on to wider recognition in the Dirtbombs and Demolition Dolls Rods respectively, the Gories should be viewed in the same influential context as the Velvet Underground and the Cramps. While they may have barely sold any records, the folks that saw and heard these bands were inspired to create. It’s high time the Gories get their due and there’s no better evidence than this explosive live recording from 25 years ago.

TICKETS FOR MARCH 2014 TOUR ON SALE NOVEMBER 22
The ongoing mini film, produced by POPFilms, stars Kate Mara and Anton Yelchin and is released via The Creators Project in conjunction with Intel and VICE’s global arts technology initiative courtesy of Columbia Records. The first installment introduced viewers to Oliver, a 9-to-5 ordinary Joe, who finds a spacesuit-clad Helen, the literal girl of his dreams. Throughout “Part One: Angel and The Fool,” Oliver and Helen explore a dreamy, extraterrestrial landscape before a glowing pink orb presents itself.
This new installment, “Holding On For Life,” allows the story to progress while incorporating some familiar faces and an interesting twist ending.
Preorders for the After the Disco full-length, out January 14 on Columbia Records, are currently available via iTunes. All preorders come with an instant download of the album’s lead-off single, “Holding On For Life.”
Earlier this week, Broken Bells announced their return to the stage as they will embark on a brief tour in March 2014. The general onsales for those shows will go live tomorrow. See the itinerary below for more information.

Third Man Records is proud to present the debut album from The Haden Triplets. These are songs steeped in history and sung in a close harmony that could only be achieved from sharing a lifetime of sisterly togetherness and a near psychic vocal interplay that can only come from being born mere seconds apart from each other. It’s been rendered and produced beautifully by American music legend Ry Cooder.
This is an album expanding on an American musical tradition. It is not pastiche or a tribute, but rather a direct antecedent and extension of the original folk legacy that is being exhibited within these songs.
Here’s a little more about it in the Hadens’ own words.
During our early life, we were surrounded by music on both sides of our family. We visited our dad’s family in Springfield, Missouri, where they taught us old country songs they used to perform on the radio as The Haden Family. Our grandparents on our mother’s side used to sing us to sleep with old Yiddish songs. Growing up, we often had music playing in the house, whether it be our mom playing Billie Holiday and Nina Simone records, or our dad playing Keith Jarrett and Ornette Coleman in the living room.
We met Ry when we played with his son Joachim, and Joachim asked him if he’d sit in for our show. Once Ry heard we were singing “Voice From On High” by Bill Monroe, he was in right away. The next day we got a call from Ry suggesting we record an album. We wrote down a collection of songs we all liked, then narrowed it down to the music that became the Haden Triplets album. These songs are rich in history, and by recording them we hope to help keep them alive. – Tanya, Rachel & Petra Haden

Queens Of The Stone Age and The Creators Project, a partnership between Intel and VICE, have unveiled the interactive video for “The Vampyre Of Time And Memory.” This bold production, directed by Kii Arens and Jason Trucco and designed and developed by Darknet, re-imagines the classic music video in the context of a virtual art installation distinguished by horror, weird beauty, and surrealism, and pushes the boundaries of creative expression. More than that, Joshua Homme and the band’s commanding performance is simply not to be missed.
Experience “The Vampyre Of Time And Memory” here:
http://www.vampyreoftimeandmemory.com
Directors Arens and Trucco commented on co-creating the “Vampyre…” experience with the Queens: “Working on this Queens video was the ultimate artistic joyride. Joshua Homme and company gave us the creative keys to the car from word go… and Josh has a badass car. Vampyre is such a thick track… On the technology side, Darknet was the perfect forward-thinking company to push the boundaries of music video presentation. All art is technology, technology that shares an experience or an idea. Vampyre uses all the tools available to us today to share a meaningful common experience. We’re so proud to be a part of the best rock album in a decade. Long live The Queens!”
In addition to the tri-level interactive video, Arens and Trucco have a offered up a Director’s Cut incorporating elements of all three visual stagings: http://youtu.be/AEIVlYegHx8
“The Vampyre Of Time And Memory,” produced by The Creators Project, is another milestone in a banner year for Queens Of The Stone Age. From the jaw-dropping Boneface animated videos that heralded the release of the band’s international #1 album …Like Clockwork (Matador) to the still-going largest tour in Queens’ history–upcoming gigs include a two-night stand at London’s Wembley Arena and a December 14 headline at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center–2013 has been marked by one triumph after another for the band whose music The New York Times has hailed as “about a man at the border of life and death, with everything at stake, and that’s exactly how it sounds.”
In addition, tomorrow sees the release of …Like Cologne, a three-track EP exclusive to Spotify featuring unique live takes on three QOTSA classics including “Vampyre of Time & Memory.” …Like Cologne was recorded September 4 at the Kulturkirche in Cologne, Germany.
Also, on November 29, we can all give thanks for the …Like Clockwork BLACK-ON-BLACK Black Friday Edition: a limited edition high quality black vinyl pressing of the “mini epic” (PEOPLE) “soundtrack to the B movie of your dreams” (AP) in a blacker sleeve with yet blacker glossy print. The Darth Vader of the vinyl world, only meaner.
Finally, more reason for thanks: Queens Of The Stone Age have submitted to popular demand and extended the life of the …Like Clockwork global touring juggernaut yet again:

Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects will be transported back to 1977 Britain beginning 8pm Friday December 13 when Fairey and Sex Pistols tour photographer Dennis Morris host the opening of SID: Superman Is Dead, a collaborative installation of paintings, photographs and prints of and inspired by Sid Vicious’ tenure as the Sex Pistols’ bassist.
Born John Simon Ritchie, Vicious’ time with the Pistols was as brief as it was chaotic and legendary. He remains the ultimate punk rock icon without question nor even a runner-up in sight. Since his death in early 1979 at the age of 21, Sid has been immortalized in countless posthumous recordings, films, T-shirts, action figures etc. SID: Superman Is Dead is possibly the ultimate of these tributes, its centerpiece being a recreation of a hotel room trashed by Sid in a fit of intoxication, rage and depression during the infamous S.P.O.T.S. (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly) tour of 1977, during which the Pistols were forced to play every date under pseudonyms to avoid cancellation.
The SID: Superman Is Dead opening reception will also feature a once in a lifetime live musical homage to Sid in the form of Ritchie Love, an exclusive assemblage of his contemporaries from the original 1977 punk rock era: Sex Pistols guitarist, co-founder and Vicious bandmate Steve Jones, Generation X co-founder Billy Idol who ran with early Pistols support gang the Bromley Contingent, Bow Wow Wow co-founder and early Adam & The Ants guitarist Leigh Gorman, and Blondie co-founder and erstwhile Ramones and Iggy Pop drummer Clem Burke.
The SID: Superman Is Dead installation will continue through January 11, 2014.
The Sex Pistols changed my life when I discovered them as a teenager. Their music alone made my arm hairs stand up, but their image and attitude were just as important and powerful. The member of the Sex Pistols who I was drawn to and most epitomized the punk image for me was Sid Vicious, with his spiked hair, leather jacket, lock necklace, and reckless behavior. At 14 I was mesmerized by Sid and I made my first home-made tee shirt of him snarling his lip defiantly. As I was rebelling, looking for any way to irritate my parents, and before I knew better, Sid was my Superman. Sid self-destructed young, and with punk’s slogans like “No Future” and “live fast, die young” , Sid was everything the Superman, anti-hero, or cliche, of a nihilistic movement called for. Sid didn’t really do much to shape punk music… he only actually played on two songs on Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols. However, Sid’s surly vocals kick ass on C’mon Everybody, Somethin’ Else, and My Way. Sid remains one of punk’s most enduring icons even if he is a classic example of style over substance. I was a sucker for Sid’s image as a teenager, and I still am, even though I see him as less “cool” and more tragic and cautionary these days. I have made many images of Sid over the years, and I thought I had retired him as a subject, until Dennis Morris, the photographer of the most intimate and iconic shots of Sid approached me about a collaboration. Dennis’s archive provided an amazing treasure trove of Sid images to work from in creating the paintings and prints in the “Superman Is Dead” show. I’m so glad I got to do Dennis’s Sid images “My Way”! I can now retire Sid as a subject. I’ve worked with the best, I can skip the rest.
–Shepard Fairey
Working from the title, S.I.D (Superman is Dead), these photographs sum up/represent the image Sid portrayed of himself to the public.
He was Hero, Villain, Fearless, Innocent and like a supernova, he shone bright; lived fast, died young.
Punk needed a hero, Sid became that hero / anti-hero.
The idea for the exhibition came from a mutual admiration and respect of each other’s work (for Shepard and I). When Shepard and I eventually met, the exhibition was born on that first meeting.
It had to happen. And a happening it will be!
–Dennis Morris
