Third Man Records having a banner year in 2012–the label’s three year anniversary, Jack White’s Blunderbuss being released and quickly becoming the first #1 album of his career, the runaway success of the Blunderbuss tour featuring Jack’s two bands The Peacocks and The Buzzards, the label’s physical (and metaphysical) expansion… The milestones just keep coming. And Vault package #14 is no exception:

JACK WHITE LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS DOUBLE LP

The LP for this quarter will be a double album recording of Jack’s live show, and solo debut, at Third Man Records from our 3 Year Anniversary Party on March 8th of this year. LP one takes in the set with the band of all lovely ladies, The Peacocks, backing him up and LP two is the second set featuring The Buzzards. This is a fantastic and historical live document of Jack White and two fiery backing bands riding off the celebratory high spirits of the evening. The set featured classics from throughout Jack’s career alongside plenty of songs from Blunderbuss, which were heard for the first time that night for many. The LPs come housed in amazing packaging which will be a first for TMR… a Lenticular gatefold cover! For those of you who may not be well versed in multiple dimensions, the Lenticular cover will show two separate images, in one. What you see depends on how the record is held or from which angle it’s viewed. The LPs, of course, will be pressed on split color Black & Blue vinyl.

JACK WHITE FREEDOM AT 21 B/W LOVE INTERRUPTION & HYPOCRITICAL KISS DEMO 7″

The 7″ for this package is very special indeed: Three Jack White bursts of inspiration captured in the moment only to be fleshed out in the studio later with a full backing band. These recordings were done on Jack’s trusty field recorder, and give an intimate glimpse into his recording and songwriting process. The 7″ of demos of Freedom At 21 B/W Love Interruption and Hypocritical Kiss will be pressed on signature Jack White Blunderbluevinyl.

BABY RUTHLESS SHARK INFESTED SODA FOUNTAIN

The third item in this package is yet another first: The debut of the Third Man Books imprint. After the most recent Dead Weather tour in 2010, Alison Mosshart self published a book titled Shark Infested Soda Fountain of her photos compiled from their adventures on the road as a gift to the other members of the band. Beyond every page being packed with beautiful ethereal photographs, when viewed as a complete work the book is a touching and one of a kind document to the unique love and camaraderie of the Dead Weather and the cast of characters that surrounded them in their international travels. Alison has been kind enough to allow the book to be re-printed in its entirety and shares with the members of The Vault.

OCTOBER 6th
Grand Re-Opening with The Shins and Low Cut Connie–plus Public Nuisance Reissue
TICKETS ON SALE NOW AT THIRD MAN RECORDS AND AT thirdmanrecords.com

The Shins will take a detour from a headlining theater and festival tour in support of the critically acclaimed Port of Morrow (Aural Apothecary/Columbia) that has taken them everywhere from tonight’s show at Los Angeles’ Gibson Amphitheater to Colorado’s Red Rocks, Lollapalooza, Saturday Night Live and more… to play an extremely rare and close-up intimate show at Third Man Records’ Blue Room. Support will come from Low Cut Connie, whose new album Sylvia is already eliciting rave reviews from Rolling Stone.

The public unveiling of the new Third Man Records complex will also feature the debut of the new patio, with hot dogs and burgers (and veggie options) available during the day – but more about the patio in a minute. The occasion will also be commemorated with a limited edition Public Nuisance re-issue available in the shop that morning from opening hours (11am). The limited edition Public Nuisance reissue is the second ever Triple Decker Vinyl ever made a/k/a The White Wall Triple Decker. 100 of these will be made available on October 6th (50 from the shop and 50 from The Third Man Rolling Record Store). Additionally, another 100 will be available via the Rolling Record Store later in the month when it hits Richmond, Northampton, Philadelphia and New York City. More information on that later.

OCTOBER 10th
The Kills with Two Tears

Third Man has been itching to present this show since day Numero Uno. Jamie and Alison are two of the most talented and creative people in the extended Third Man Records family. Come October 10, they’ll finally rock the Blue Room stage and commit the show to wax for the first ever TMR release by the one and only KILLS. If that isn’t exciting enough, word on the street is that they’re bringing the Black Rooster Drum Corp along with them. Opening the show will be two piece rock n rollers, Two Tears.

OCTOBER 23rd
Films of Olivia Wyatt
Staring Into The Sun and The Pierced Heart & The Machete

On the 23rd, Third Man will showcase Rockaway Beach NY based filmmaker and photographer Olivia Wyatt, who will be in attendance for the only Nashville screening of two of her modern day ethno-folk cinema classics released by the fantastic record label and collective, Sublime Frequencies. Staring Into The Sun Olivia explores 13 different tribes throughout Ethiopia and takes in Zar spirit possession, Hamer tribal wedding ceremonies, wild hyena feedings and more in a blend of ethereal images, landscapes and sounds from the horn of Africa. The Pierced Heart And The Machete is a film exploring two Haitian Vodou religious pilgrimages that take place each year in mid-July. Both of these culturally  and musically rich films are exactly the sort of front line and important sort of presentations that mean so much to the folks at Third Man.

OCTOBER 26th
Seasick Steve with Promised Land

The dog Hisself joins us at Third Man for a rare Stateside live appearance. Third Man is beyond pleased to have old pal Seasick Steve–whose Third Man discography includes the You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks album and “Write Me A Few Lines”/”Levee Camp Blues” single–back to Nashville to play a live show. Nobody, but nobody, rocks a Diddley Bow like Seasick Steve. This is a must-see rare live appearance from one of the greatest showmen working today.

Promised Land is a new-ish band from Nashville that mines the best from the Flying Burrito Brothers and The Band  and we know everyone is gonna love em.

The Shins, The Kills and Seasick Steve performances will all be recorded for Live At Third Man LPs, and Promised Land will be recorded for a live 45. Limited Edition Black & Blue split color vinyl Pre-Sales will be available for attendees only after each individual show.

As for those upgrades…

The October 6 Shins show will unveil TMR’s newly installed record cutting lathe and vinyl mastering suite, which fans will be able to view from inside the Blue Room. The live experience will be enhanced as fans will not only be able to watch the live show but will also be able to see the show being recorded, mixed and mastered LIVE to an acetate disc via the viewing window and a two camera monitor system. This makes Third Man this the ONLY live to acetate venue in the world.

Additionally, Third Man Records’ lathe was once in residence at King Records in Cincinnati, meaning records by the likes of James Brown, Hank Ballard, Charlie Feathers or any number of incredible artists could have been cut on this machine back in its heyday. Possibly even the original ‘I’m Shakin'” by Little Willie John. All TMR headline acts in October will be recorded using this new system.

TMR’s expansion into a third building next door also means that public restrooms will be available for attendees of these events in the Blue Room. To find the new restrooms, you just cross right over the new covered wooden patio.

In addition, The Rolling Record Store now has its very own Batcave, and while not all can be revealed at this time (or ever–there have to be some things kept secret), the attached photos are evidence that no detail has been spared in the creation on this aesthetically sublime yellow tinted wonderland.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: WILLY MOON “RAILROAD TRACK” B/W “BANG BANG”

Third Man Records Debut Single To Be Released August 20th 2012

Pre-orders Available Now via thirdmanrecords.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF479nQ-s8E&feature=youtu.be

Third Man Records is proud to present the latest single by the label’s absolute favorite producer/ singer / rock n roller from New Zealand by way of the UK: Willy Moon.

21-year-old Kiwi Willy writes, records and produces everything on his own and keeps things short. Nothing grazes the three minute mark. Inspired equally by love of the physical energy of Cab Calloway, the brevity of The Ramones, and the style of film noir, Willy doesn’t blend different sounds so much as smash them together–as if rock ‘n’ roll was deep-frozen in 1965, and abruptly reanimated 45 years later by a laptop hip hop producer.

On August 20th (and available for pre-order now) Third Man Records releases the 7″ single and digital download of Willy Moon’s “Railroad Track” b/w “Bang Bang.” Both songs ring out as Big Bang size collisions of R&B (new and old), Gospel, and Doo Wop suavicity making this single one of the most exciting things the crew at Third Man has heard this year.

Check out the Michael Carter directed video filmed on location in Nashville TN for “Railroad Track” here and then pre-order the 7″ here.

SUBSCRIBE BY JULY 31 AT www.thirdmanrecords.com OR MISS OUT

Third Man Records’ subscription-only Vault series unveils its 13th and arguably most covetable treasure to date: The White Stripes’ Live at the Gold Dollar LP.

Live at the Gold Dollar is a vinyl document of the first ever White Stripes concert–the same show discussed specifically by Jack and Meg in the footage from their Under Great White Northern Lights currently living on the www.thirdmanrecords.com homepage.

Hurry up and get your Vault subscription at www.thirdmanrecords.com before the deadline of July 31st to be able to grab this little piece of musical history.

THIRD MAN RECORDS 12TH INSTALLMENT OF VAULT SUBSCRIPTION SERIES

EXCLUSIVE RELEASES FROM THE RACONTEURS, KAREN ELSON & THE WHITE STRIPES

thirdmanrecords.com

The hits just keep on rolling with the 12th installment of Third Man’s Vault subscription series.

First up is a 7” vinyl single featuring two previously unreleased recordings by the Raconteurs from their Consolers of the Lonely sessions. “Open Your Eyes” b/w “You Make a Fool Out of Me” are two songs that would later be re-recorded and repurposed for Brendan Benson solo albums. “Fool” would appear on Benson’s 2009 release My Old Familiar Friend while “Open” has morphed into “Here in the Deadlights” on his upcoming album What Kind of World. The versions on the 7” are not outtakes, demos, B-sides or anything of a cast-off nature. Rather, they are songs that just did not find a spot on the LP.

As Third Man’s own Jack White puts it, “’Open Your Eyes’ sounds like a hit. Seems like it could’ve been released as a single and I can’t remember why it didn’t make the album.”

For the LP component Third Man literally dug into its physical vault and dusted off Karen Elson’s live performance from Third Man on May 24th, 2010.  That evening’s performance celebrated the release of Elson’s debut LP The Ghost Who Walks and the live record documents Elson backed by her crack band in a truly ethereal, vibrant recording that breathes a life into the songs that is wholly different from their studio versions.

Paired with this elegant recording is an interactive record sleeve. The front cover depicts Elson in a field of peach with the striking image of her dress is die-cut. Coupled with a specially designed inner-sleeve, the listener can effectively play “dress-up” with four different looks for Elson, depending on the orientation of the sleeve. If that’s not enough, get rid of the sleeve completely and you can arrange the vinyl itself, pressed on split-color peach and black vinyl, to create a 100% unique dress design.

The bonus item for this Vault package is a DVD of the White Stripes titled Under New Zealand Lights. Made up of two different performances by the band on separate trips to the island nation.

The first finds them performing at the King’s Arms in Auckland in November 2000. This is some of the earliest known footage of the White Stripes outside North America (it was their first international tour) and finds them confident and captivating before a unexpecting crowd.

Come October 2003, the White Stripes were slightly more known but still in front of a crowd they had to work considerably to win over.  The audience was the student population of Freeman’s Bay Primary School. Jack and Meg provided a nice primer on American blues history and the kids seemed to enjoy themselves in this sweet, innocent performance that has been kept mostly under wraps in the nine years since it took place.

Subscribe now as Third Man will stop accepting orders for this package on April 30th.

THIRD MAN RECORDS: NO APRIL FOOLS: 1000 JACK WHITE FLEXI DISCS DISTRIBUTED VIA BALLOON LAUNCH

RECORD STORE DAY 2012 RELEASES FROM JACK WHITE, KAREN ELSON, THE WHITE STRIPES & JERRY LEE LEWIS

JACK WHITE LIQUID-FILLED “SIXTEEN SALTINES” 12″ & KAREN ELSON LASER-CUT LACE SPLIT-COLOR DISC

AVAILABLE ONLY FROM THIRD MAN RECORDS IN NASHVILLE ON APRIL 21, 2012

http://thirdmanrecords.com

Three weeks prior to the April 24 release of his debut album Blunderbuss (Third Man Records/Columbia), Third Man Records has premiered the as yet unreleased Jack White album track “Freedom at 21” exclusively via 1000 flexi-disc records attached to helium balloons launched from the label headquarters in Nashville on April 1st, 2012: http://youtu.be/szoIcNykCc0

Envisioned as an experiment exploring non-traditional forms of record distribution and a way to get records in the hands of people who don”t visit record shops, the label was sure to use biodegradable latex balloons and all-natural twine in the process.

Accompanying the balloons were custom postcards with instructions for the finders to submit photos, discovery location and the date on which the record was found, all of which will be incorporated into a website where fans can access the information at http://thirdmanrecords.com/balloon

Statistics for similar balloon launches show a recovery rate of approximately 10% so it”s quite possible that less than 100 of the 1000 records launched will ever be discovered. Whatever the numbers, the “Freedom at 21” flexi-disc will surely be a highly sought-after collectible for years to come.

Next up, a veritable onslaught of TMR Record Store Day releases marking the April 21 occasion as seen at

JACK WHITE: “SIXTEEN SALTINES” –  The12-inch single of Jack White’s “Sixteen Saltines” features a  George Ingram-designed playable etching of the iconic Third Man logo on its B-side (Jack”s  cover of U2’s “Love is Blindness”). The grooves of the record play through the image, making it the world’s first-ever playable etched record ®.

But there”s a more… a limited-edition version of the “Sixteen Saltines” 12-inch, also featuring the playable etching, is pressed on clear vinyl–and filled with psychedelic blue liquid. The liquid-filled “Saltines” is the first-ever disc of its kind to be made available to the public.

KAREN ELSON: “MILK AND HONEY” – The new single from Karen Elson, a cover of Jackson C. Frank’s “Milk and Honey,” is pressed on milk and honey split-colored vinyl, and also available in a limited edition with a laser-cut lace sleeve. The visual these two elements make when combined together is simply stunning.

THE WHITE STRIPES: “HAND SPRINGS” B/W “RED DEATH AT 6:14” – Third Man will release a red vinyl with black wisps edition of the White Stripes “Hand Springs” and “Red Death at 6:14”, two songs that have been out of print on vinyl for over ten years.

JERRY LEE LEWIS: LIVE AT THIRD MAN – The CD/LP release of Jerry Lee Lewis’ Record Store Day 2011 live performance at Third Man will be available at ANY record store wise enough to have ordered copies for Record Store Day.

The liquid-filled “Sixteen Saltines” and laser-cut lace split-color “Milk And Honey” will ONLY be available from Third Man Records physical location in Nashville (623 7th Ave S) on Record Store Day, April 21st, 2012. The playable etching will also be available from Third Man and a select number of record stores.

Finally,  reports of Third Man pressing up the first ever 3 RPM record can be confirmed: Guests at Third Man”s March 8 third anniversary gala were not only treated to a once in a lifetime evening of culinary delights and custom tailored libations, a surprise live performance by Jack White, an opening set by Hell Beach and Greg Cartwright on the wheels of steel… Every guest in attendance left with a 3 RPM LP containing every Blue Series single Third Man has released. The world”s first 3 RPM record is a study in contradictions: Cut at the slowest speed yet playing faster than any other LP, a compilation of 7 inch records packaged like a 12 inch–but in a 12 inch sleeve made, like TMR”s 7 inch sleeves, of one continuous piece of paper folded in half and put into an acetate sleeve, easy to play but impossible to hear, given away from yet impossible to find… You get the idea. Or if you don”t:

THIRD MAN RECORDS TEAMS UP WITH STUDENT TRAVEL EXPERTS BRIGHTSPARK TO OFFER STUDENT MUSICIANS EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME

“School Choirs & Bands at Third Man: A Vinyl Recording Experience”

Offers Students The Chance To Record Their Own Vinyl Singles

Third Man Records has partnered with Brightspark Travel to create “School Choirs & Bands at Third Man: A Vinyl Recording Experience,” a one of a kind program offering students behind-the-scenes access to Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, TN, as well as the chance to record their own 7” 45rpm vinyl records.

“With funding for music education being cut every day, Third Man feels a duty to do its part. What better way to do so than to record the kids themselves and put ‘em on vinyl?” Commented Third Man Head of Production Ben Blackwell, who will participate in a Q&A session with students as part of the program.

Following the tour and Q&A, students will professionally record their music in the same Third Man Studio where the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Conan O’Brien, Jack White’s various bands and so many others have recorded. Students will receive 7” singles of the performances pressed in their school colors, as well as a commemorative plaque for each school.

WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT? TOM JONES’ THIRD MAN BLUE SERIES SINGLE, THAT’S WHAT!

Jones’ Take On Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” c/w Frankie Lane’s “Jezebel” (TMR 106) Out March 5th

Duane The Teenage Weirdo Blue Series 7″ (TMR 125) Out January 24th

Vault Package #11 Available For Subscribers Signing Up Before January 31st

http://www.thirdmanrecords.com/

Third Man Records is proud to announce the most virile entry in the history of its Blue Series singles: The man, the legend himself Mr. Tom Jones laying his unmistakable voice over Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” and the Frankie Lane classic “Jezebel” (as covered over the years by the likes of Edith Piaf and Anna Calvi). Both tracks were produced by Jack White at Third Man studios and will be available on 7” and iTunes March 5th.

Right around the corner and straight outta Detroit is a new Blue Series 7” from high flying DIY electro genius and self-described weirdo, Duane The Teenage Weirdo. Pop music in Depression-era 2012 doesn’t come any more legit then in Duane’s capable hands. Both tracks, “Postcard From Hell” and “Bubblegum Encore,” are the sound of Detroit pared down to a hard beat, feral vocals, synth stabs and real dance intent which all makes Duane our second favorite Detroiter to call himself a streetwalking cheetah. The single will be available as a Blue Series 7” and via iTunes January 24th.

And lastly, the latest Third Man Records subscription-only Vault package…  #11:

2012 starts off with the label’s third and FINAL singles compilation, on three LPs pressed in Third Man’s standard three colors of vinyl: black, yellow and white–as well as the third in an annual series of fold-out posters depicting the covers of all the previous years’ TMR singles.

This quarter’s 7” is something literally from the vault: Recorded during the 1999 sessions for their self-titled debut, the White Stripes “Dead Leaves” and “Let’s Build a Home” are versions markedly different from the ones that would eventually be recorded and released on White Blood Cells and De Stijl. This piece is truly one for the fans and getting songs like these into their hands was this main reason the Vault was created.

The wild card item this quarter is a solar-reactive, color-changing Third Man Records logo t-shirt: yes, when exposed to sunlight, the color of the print switches from yellow to white, again reinforcing the THREE color scheme and complementing the triple LP set above. Finally… a reason for record collectors to venture outdoors!

The 3-LP set (TMR 133),  “Dead Leaves”/“Let’s Build a Home” 7″ (TMR 134) and three-color Third Man shirt are available ONLY to Vault subscribers–so sign up now if you want ’em as the cut-off date of January 31st is fast approaching!

Four Reissues from The White Stripes

Third Man Records REVOLUTION Turntable, 45 box, and custom vinyl cleaning kit by Crosley

Third Man Records iPhone Case and Flat Auxiliary Audio Cable by Griffin

www.thirdmanrecords.com

Third Man Records celebrates the end of the year with a slew of new reasons to be thankful.

First up is a cornucopia of new vinyl 45 goodness beginning with Edgar Oliver’s “In The Park” b/w “ Hunger and Light” (TMR121). The latest in TMR’s Green Series of spoken word/instructional records comes from Edgar Oliver, the Discovery Channel show Oddities regular and critically-acclaimed, syrup-voiced actor, playwright and noir poet who’s haunted New York City since 1977. On his Third Man single he delivers the chilling poem “In the Park” with palpable suspense. The B-side “Hunger and Light” is recorded in Triple Reverse Cryptophonica ™ and will (hopefully) have you spending hours trying to figure out exactly what he’s saying. Edgar Oliver’s “In The Park” b/w “ Hunger and Light” will be released on vinyl and iTunes on November 22nd.

As for the ongoing Blue Series, a man who needs no introduction — but who we’ll introduce as John C. Reilly will release not one but TWO Third Man singles in November, both featuring Jack White, The Black Belles’ Olivia Jean and Fats Kaplin. John & Tom: “Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar” b/w “Lonesome Yodel Blues #2” (TMR112) finds John’s duet with Tom Brosseau sung in close harmony as they perform two songs originally by The Delmore Brothers. Becky & John’s “I’ll Be There If You Ever Want” b/w “I’m Making Plans” (TMR113) sees John paired with Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) and swerves more in the classic country vein taking in tunes originally performed by Ray Price and Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner. Both are released on November 29th on vinyl and iTunes.

But wait, there’s more TMR end of year celebration afoot, namely four offerings from The White Stripes: “The Big Three Killed My Baby” b/w “Red Bowling Ball Ruth” (TMR117) is a reissue of the decade-plus out of print only single off the White Stripes self-titled debut album. The A-side is Jack White’s tempered screed against the monopoly of American auto companies against the accented thud of Meg’s pounding drums. The B-side “Red Bowling Ball Ruth” is exclusive to this single and overflows with AC/DC-inspired rock riffs. Re-mastered direct from the original analog masters! “Lord, Send Me an Angel” b/w “You’re Pretty Good Looking (Trendy American Remix)” (TMR118) was originally released as part of the White Stripes Japan-Australia-New Zealand “Three Island Tour” in October 2000, and now these songs are back in print for the first time in over a decade. The A-side is a cover of Blind Willie McTell’s “Lord, Send Me an Angel” with parts of his classic “Ticket Agent” thrown into the mix for good measure. Pay attention to Jack White’s update of the lyrics to reflect his own geographical location. The flipside is an Auto-Tuned (before they called it that) remix of “You’re Pretty Good Looking” that’s a peculiar novelty to say the least. Both tracks are re-mastered directly from the original master tape.

The last two reissues from the White Stripes catalog to finish out the year are “Candy Cane Children” b/w “Reading of the Story of the Magi”, “Silent Night” (TMR071) and “Hello Operator” b/w “Jolene” (TMR067), releasing December 6th. Merry Christmas from The White Stripes is available again! 333 copies were printed on red vinyl and included as part of the White Stripes 2010 Holiday Merchandise package, but in print forever copies are now to be had on black vinyl. The A-side was originally recorded in 1998 and its’ title has been appropriated by Stripes fans as a term to describe themselves as a group. The B-side features Meg singing an a cappella version of “Silent Night” coupled with Jack reading the Story of the Magi from the Bible. The whole thing is a warming, heartfelt pile of Christmas goodness…dig in! While a picture disc version of “Hello Operator” b/w “Jolene” was available in 2010 from Third Man’s subscription-only series the Vault, the black vinyl, picture sleeve version is now available for all to buy and will be kept in print eternally. The sole single off of the Stripes sophomore “De Stijl” album, “Hello Operator” was the first song legendary UK DJ John Peel ever played by the band. If that wasn’t enough, the B-side showcases the band’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” a long-time fan favorite live only ever available on this single.

Additionally, Third Man Records is excited to announce five exciting new products just in time for this 2012 holiday season. The first of these products sure to excite audiophiles everywhere is a custom Third Man-designed Revolution compact turntable by Crosley. The Revolution portable record player’s features include:
