MUSIC RISING MARKS 10th ANNIVERSARY

The Edge Reflects on Charity’s Decade of Growth Into Disaster Relief Organization for Musical Communities Nationwide

musicrising.org

???????????????????????????????

10 years ago Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, leaving behind a trail of destruction that The Edge of U2 would soon witness firsthand during a visit to New Orleans’ hard hit 9th Ward. Moved by the devastation suffered by the local musical community, Edge teamed with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, Gibson Guitars, MusiCares and the Guitar Center Foundation to provide immediate aid to the musicians whose lives and livelihoods had sustained the most damage when the levees broke. In short order, efforts including donations of net proceeds from the sales of Gibson and Epiphone Music Rising special edition guitars and the providing of musical instruments to professionals whose gear was destroyed in the storm were implemented. In a PSA at the time, Edge explained the helplessness he would have felt in the face of such overwhelming loss as Music Rising replaced thousands of instruments in what would ultimately be the first phase of its still ongoing and continually expanding mission.

Reflecting on the 10-year journey of Music Rising, The Edge commented: Music is at the core of these communities. It’s an essential part of their identities, their hearts and their lives. So when these centers of musical culture are damaged, getting the music going again is a crucial part of the healing process.

With Music Rising, we and our partners continue to do everything in our power to help support this centuries old music culture so it can do its magic for many generations to come.

What started as a direct response to one of the worst disasters to affect a musical capital of the U.S. has grown over a decade to offer assistance to musicians far and wide. Where there is music, there is hope, and Music Rising will continue to do everything possible to restore both for another 10 years and beyond.

In the decade following the initial 2005 Katrina aftermath, Music Rising’s efforts have grown in scope. Additional programs in the Gulf Coast region have included the distribution of over $5 million worth of instruments for some 30 schools (in conjunction with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation), as well as becoming the largest purchaser of Hammond organs in order to replace those destroyed by Katrina in regional houses of worship, and contributed $1 million to develop the Music Rising curriculum at Tulane University. Music Rising’s national outreach broadened as the organization provided aid to creative communities impacted by the 2010 Tennessee floods, as well as relief along with MusiCares and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Music Rising’s nationwide efforts are not limited to aid in the aftermath of natural disasters—its outreach continues in the very fortunate lull between these cataclysms: The organization recently reached out to Detroit, with efforts to aid the Motor City’s singular musical heritage including the distribution or hundreds of musical instruments to students. Elsewhere, Music Rising’s Music Icons auctions hosted by the world renowned Julien’s Auctions have raised millions in bids for items donated by Edge, U2 and friends. With support from friends and family including the Hard Rock International Corporation, Aaron Neville, Trombone Shorty and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day—who teamed with U2 for the historic 2006 performance that reopened the Superdome and welcomed the New Orleans Saints home—Edge, Ezrin and Music Rising’s efforts on behalf of musical communities in need promise to be just as tireless and far reaching for decades to come.

U2: SONG FOR SOMEONE (DIRECTED BY MATT MAHURIN)

24-HOUR VIDEO EXCLUSIVE AT Facebook.com/u2

U2 have unveiled a second video for “Song For Someone,” directed by acclaimed illustrator and photographer Matt Mahurin and viewable exclusively on the band’s Facebook page for the next 24 hours.

Reuniting U2’s music and Mahurin’s distinctive style—the two worked together on 1993’s “Love Is Blindness”–“Song For Someone” is a visual meditation on a standout track from U2’s Songs Of Innocence album. Rendered in a beautiful black and white palette and featuring a performance from Bono filmed earlier this year in Malibu, Mahurin’s vision for “Song For Someone” draws sharp parallels between song, inspiration and other forces of nature.

On working with U2 once more, Mahurin said “Collaboration is a great part of the creative process – and it has been a true joy to once again jump aboard the band’s mission of music, mercy and mayhem.”

Mahurin’s evocative take on “Song For Someone” stands in stark contrast to Vincent Haycock’s short film starring Woody and Zoe Harrelson, which debuted July 9 on SundanceTV.

“Song For Someone” has been a nightly highlight of the band’s current iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour, which resumes September 4 in Turin, Italy.

Fresh off an undeniably historic headline performance at this year’s Lollapalooza hailed without exception as the biggest and best in the festival’s 25 year history, Paul McCartney has confirmed five new North American arena dates on the universally acclaimed ‘Out There’ tour.

First, Paul will return to Columbus, OH nearly 10 years to the day since his last appearance in the Ohio capital city to headline the Nationwide Arena on October 13. On October 15, Paul will play his first ever show in State College, PA at the Bryce Jordan Center. October 17 will see Paul back at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre for the first time since 2010 on the ‘Up And Coming’ Tour, followed by an October 21 in Detroit, MI — Paul’s first appearance at the Joe Louis Arena and his first visit to the Motor City since 2011 on the ‘On The Run’ Tour. Finally, Paul will make his concert debut in Buffalo, NY on October 22 at the First Niagara Center.

Having already torn through 22 shows this year covering Japan, South Korea, Europe, the UK and the US, the ‘Out There’ tour, as always, features music from the most beloved catalog in popular music, spanning Paul’s entire career – as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle. The set list also includes material from Paul’s most recent studio album NEW, a global hit upon its release in 2013.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity: in just three hours some of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music are relived, music which for many has shaped the very soundtrack of their lives. Paul and his band have performed in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people, played the last ever show at  San Francisco’s Candlestick Park where The Beatles played their final concert, and even broadcast live into space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 10+ years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show never disappoints.

The tour also uses state of the art technology and production to ensure the entire audience has the best possible experience. With massive screens, lasers, fireworks, unique video content and, of course, the best songs in the world, a Paul McCartney show is so much more than just an ordinary concert. Paul’s shows attract a multi generational audience from different backgrounds all brought together by his music.

2015 has been yet another incredible year for Paul. He kicked things off on the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards with Rihanna and Kanye West, performing their smash hit collaboration ‘FourFiveSeconds’, treated New York City to an intimate Valentines Day concert the night before appearing on the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary special, and inducted Ringo Starr into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame all before the year’s halfway mark. Having played another slew of sold out dates including his debut appearance in South Korea at the Seoul Olympic Stadium, the massive Stade de France in Paris, and triumphant headline sets at the Firefly, Roskilde and Lollapalooza festivals, ‘Out There’ 2015 is already proving to be another amazing chapter for a living legend who continues to make history with his every move.

BOOTS TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM AQUΛRIA ON NOVEMBER 13th, 2015 VIA COLUMBIA RECORDS

EXCLUSIVE NPR ‘ALL SONGS CONSIDERED’ EXTENDED INTERVIEW WITH BOB BOILEN COMING SOON

© Eliot Lee Hazel
© Eliot Lee Hazel

On the heels of last week’s surprise release of FKA twigs’ M3LL15X EP, BOOTS – the sole producer behind four of the EP’s five tracks – is now announcing the release of his debut album, AQUΛRIA, due out Friday, November 13th on Columbia Records. Featuring co-production from El-P (Run The Jewels) and Carla Azar (Autolux), AQUΛRIA is set somewhere in a twilight realm of the Information Era as BOOTS blends masterful musical styles and gritty vocals with a futuristic approach at creating a boundary-crushing defiance to the established musical hivemind.

As a first offering, BOOTS gives us the title track to AQUΛRIA which features Angel Deradoorian (The Dirty Projectors) on vocals and is available to listen to here.

Coming soon, be sure to tune in to a very special episode NPR’s ALL SONGS CONSIDERED as Bob Boilen – an early BOOTS fan – sits down with him to dissect the album and give listeners a taste of the new music. Delving deep, the two discuss pivotal moments in BOOTS life and career, unveiling a side of BOOTS few have ever known.

In February of 2015, esteemed New York Times music critic Jon Pareles traveled to the Mojave Desert to meet with Jordy Asher aka BOOTS. Asher was in the process of making his short film Motorcycle Jesus, the companion to a soundtrack of five songs which had piqued Pareles’ interest. Over a few days in the desert, he and BOOTS discussed his unlikely origin story: from sleeping on floors to becoming the secret weapon powering critical and commercial smashes for the likes of Beyonce, FKA twigs, and others — all the while crafting his own material for his WinterSpringSummerFall mixtape and Motorcycle Jesus. Pareles drew out of him the genesis of his ambition:

The dogged survival instinct of his character in Motorcycle Jesus, he said, reflects “people, like myself, who just have to keep moving forward and working, to keep my head and do what my gut tells me. Because I don’t know what happens if I stop working, or if I stop moving, or if I stop going perpetually forward. And I’m afraid to find out.”

That profile, the multimedia release of Motorcycle Jesus and a blazing TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon would conspire to introduce BOOTS to the world as a creative force to be reckoned with in his own right.

BOOTS will be on tour this fall supporting Run The Jewels. Full list of tour dates are below.

AQUARIA SINGLE ART HI RES

DANGER MOUSE LAUNCHES 30TH CENTURY RECORDS

© James Minchin
© James Minchin

Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, is excited to announce 30th Century Records, his imprint in collaboration with Columbia Records. Beginning this fall, the world-renowned artist, songwriter and producer will oversee a label comprised of artists he is personally signing. 30th Century Records will debut with his first signing, Autolux, who are currently at work on the full-length follow-up to 2010’s critically-celebrated Transit Transit.

Last year marked the 10th anniversary of Danger Mouse’s wildly innovative landmark release, The Grey Album, which dramatically altered the musical and technological topography of the entertainment industry. By fusing a cappella strains of Jay Z’s Black Album with the instrumentals from The Beatles’ White Album, Danger Mouse jettisoned music production into the 21st Century.

Since 2004 and The Grey Album, a bevy of modern day musical titans have sought out the Danger Mouse treatment. Burton’s songwriting and production work as Danger Mouse can be heard on such notable releases as Gorillaz’s Demon Days,  Beck’s Modern Guilt, Norah Jones’ …Little Broken Hearts, The Black Keys’ explosive single “Tighten Up” and their massive album El Camino. More recently, Burton’s talents and expertise can be heard on U2’s Songs of Innocence and A$AP Rocky’s AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP.

Aside from his work as a producer, Burton has established himself as an artist, composer and songwriter. In 2006, Burton teamed up with CeeLo Green to form Gnarls Barkley. This partnership gave birth to two full-length albums and of course the single “Crazy,” which Rolling Stone dubbed Song of the Decade. In 2010, Burton collaborated with Sparklehorse and David Lynch to create Dark Night of the Soul, a star-studded studio album featuring guests such as James Mercer, Black Francis, Wayne Coyne, Julian Casablancas, and Iggy Pop among a host of others. The album’s release was accompanied by a photo book consisting of photos taken by Lynch which provided a visual narrative for the music. Burton would eventually go on to showcase his talents as a composer in 2011 when he joined Daniele Luppi to craft the epic Rome which featured Jack White, Norah Jones and the original musicians who performed composer Ennio Morricone’s Italian film scores, which were key inspirations for the project’s conception.

Burton has devoted much of his time during the last seven years to his band Broken Bells which he formed with James Mercer of The Shins in 2008. This partnership resulted in two full length, Columbia-released albums: their 2010 self-titled debut and 2014’s After the Disco.

Through the years, Burton’s work has been heavily praised and recognized by the music world’s governing bodies. Among his 21 GRAMMY nominations that span nine years, Burton has won five awards including Producer of the Year in 2011. In 2014, Burton won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for his writing and production work with U2 on their song “Ordinary Love”.

The internationally renowned, Grammy Award-winning Arcade Fire’s first feature film, The Reflektor Tapes, has been confirmed for inclusion in the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, which commences September 10th. The screening on September 12th will be the worldwide premiere, debuting for a prestigious international audience alongside the likes of The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne and The Martian with Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, as part of TIFF’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Details on screenings can be found at http://tiff.net/festivals/festival15.

Additionally, the theatrical release of The Reflektor Tapes has been moved up one day in North America to September 23rd. Tickets for The Reflektor Tapes are now on sale, with more screenings soon to be confirmed. For a list of theaters, times and further information—as well as a brand new full length trailer–see here or go to www.TheReflektorTapes.com.

The Reflektor Tapes is directed by 2013 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Short Films winner Kahlil Joseph, and produced by award-winning studio Pulse Films (20,000 Days on EarthShut Up And Play The Hits) and What Matters Most. It is a film quite unlike any other; an authentic cinematic experience, meeting at the crossroads of documentary, music, art and personal history. The release will be brought to screens by leading Event Cinema distributor Arts Alliance. Each and every screening of this limited release will be part of a unique cinematic event to be shared by audiences around the world.

The Reflektor Tapes is a fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s critically acclaimed, international #1 album Reflektor. The film recontextualizes the album experience, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape. It charts the band’s creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, commence recording sessions in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel on the first night of Carnival, before bringing their breathtaking live show to packed arenas in Los Angeles and London.

Audiences will relive stunning concerts from the Reflektor tour, re-envisioned in true cinema high definition and surround sound. The film will also offer a rare opportunity for fans to delve beneath the surface and get closer to the band themselves. With Arcade Fire granting previously unprecedented access to Joseph, The Reflektor Tapes fluidly blends in never before seen personal footage, including interviews, documentation of the recording process and moments captured by the band themselves, to dazzling effect.

Arcade Fire said of the film: “There were parts of the Reflektor tour where I think we, Arcade Fire, came the closest in our careers to putting on stage what we imagined in our heads. We were insanely lucky to have Kahlil Joseph documenting from the very beginning.”

In addition to showcasing music from Reflektor and other albums in Arcade Fire’s storied back catalogue, The Reflektor Tapes will also give viewers a chance to hear a brand new, unreleased track for the first time and features an exclusive 15 minutes of unseen footage, filmed with the band only for cinema audiences.
