PAUL McCARTNEY: Lyrics And Music For It’s A Wonderful Life Musical By Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney is writing his first musical – an adaptation of one of the world’s most loved films

It’s A Wonderful Life

Music & Lyrics by Paul McCartney
Book and Lyrics by Lee Hall
Produced by Bill Kenwright

Today, Paul confirms a career first. He is working on a musical stage adaptation of one of the most iconic films in cinema history – Frank Capra’s “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Based on Philip Van Doren Stern’s “The Greatest Gift” the legendary movie was directed and produced by Frank Capra and released in 1946.

Paul has partnered with British theatre and film impresario Bill Kenwright who will produce the show. Bill originally approached Paul three years ago after acquiring the rights to the much-loved film that over seven decades since its release continues to be a Prime-Time must for television audiences all around the world. Paul and Bill enjoy a lifetime’s connection having both been born and raised in Liverpool, and both attended the Liverpool Institute High School (now LIPA – the acclaimed performing arts academy founded by Paul).

In addition to writing the music Paul has been working on the lyrics with the Tony Award winning English screen and play writer Lee Hall, who is also responsible for the book of the musical.

As a child Paul inherited a love of Broadway and show tunes from his father Jim who would perform at home on the family piano on every occasion possible, and this influence would eventually permeate into Paul’s own song-writing and diverse compositions.

Speaking about this news Paul said:

“Like many of these things this all started with an email.  Bill had asked if it was something I might be up for. Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me but Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun.  ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a universal story we can all relate to.”

Bill Kenwright said:

“Working with Paul on “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a dream realised. To be honest I was hooked on first hearing him say “one/two/three/four” on the demo of the opening number! But since then it’s been an extraordinary journey – on every song I experience Paul’s unique gift of melody and composition. It’s musical theatre – but it’s always McCartney.

Paul, Lee, and I use the word “cherish” when we refer to our source material and that’s what we intend to do. Cherish Frank Capra’s creation.”

Lee Hall said:

“It’s A Wonderful Life is my favourite film. It has absolutely everything comedy, pathos and a rare humanity which has touched generation after generation. Yet it just couldn’t be more relevant. To give it a life on the stage is an immense privilege in itself but to do with Paul McCartney is off the scale. Paul’s wit, emotional honesty and melodic brilliance brings a whole new depth and breadth to the classic tale. I feel as if an angel must be looking after me.”

Paul, who has written some of the world’s most loved, celebrated and enduring music, has musically realised the emotional story of a man down on his luck George Bailey. Unaware of all the lives he has touched and how different his community would be had he never been born; George is close to suicide. However, he is saved by the intervention of a guardian angel – and, of course, as in all feel good, but resonant movies, George realises the true value of his life.

Some 70 years since the release of the film the story still remains relevant today, probably even more so, as a reminder to cherish family, friends and the life you have, something Paul McCartney has always strived to do in his own life and work.

For Bill Kenwright, the production will be a lifetime’s ambition.  As a very young producer, Bill personally reached out to Frank Capra to see if he could get the rights to turn the film into a musical. Bill received a lovely handwritten letter by reply – but it contained a no! However, out of the blue, many decades later he was offered the rights when he was in the middle of another project with Paramount. It was a massive moment for the now hugely successful producer, and he dared to dream of involving his school friend on what would be Paul’s first major musical journey. They met, and amongst discussing all things Liverpool, school and rock and roll, they sort of agreed to take things further…

It wasn’t until two years later that Paul shared his first musical ideas with Bill. Bill recalls: “It was a Friday night and I was in the office. I suppose you could say it hadn’t been the best of weeks. No real progress on multitudinous film and theatre projects – and Everton had lost the previous Saturday. Out of the blue I got an email from Paul asking my thoughts on his first stab at an opening song. He wasn’t sure – but wanted to know what Lee and I thought of it? I played the demo. Lee and I were unanimous. Our hero was a musical theatre writer!”

Paul was in the middle of releasing his number one album ‘Egypt Station’ in September 2018 as well as launching a global tour to support the album release, but in between touring and album commitments Paul found time to work with Lee Hall on more songs. Both here and in New York.

Bill remembers another moment in January of this year the day after he’d watched Everton lose in an FA Cup match at Millwall. He was inconsolable – but Lee rang him from the airport after working with Paul in New York and brought over a further six tracks in demo form. His gloom started to lift…

“They exceeded expectations for both of us. The songs take you somewhere you don’t expect to go. They sound simple – but it’s deceptive. That’s Paul’s genius. I don’t have to tell any lover of music how extraordinary he is – but he constantly takes my breath away. Since we worked together on the The Pitmen Painters Lee has been a special writer and person to me. And it’s a privilege to watch Paul and Lee create so vibrantly together.”

Having just completed the US leg of his current Freshen Up world tour in front of a sell-out audience at Los Angeles Dodger Stadium last weekend, Paul is still in the final stages of completing songs for his entry into musical theatre. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is set to launch in late 2020.

PAUL McCARTNEY: DECADES-SPANNING LIVE ALBUM MILESTONE REISSUES

PAUL McCARTNEY
DECADES-SPANNING “LIVE” ALBUM MILESTONE REISSUES

AMOEBA GIG
PAUL IS LIVE
CHOBA B CCCP
WINGS OVER AMERICA

TO BE RELEASED JULY 12, 2019 VIA MPL/CAPITOL/UMe

Following last night’s kick-off of this year’s North American leg of his record-breaking FRESHEN UP Tour, PAUL McCARTNEY adds to his Summer of LIVE: Paul has confirmed updated releases of four albums capturing performances spanning from his 1975-1976 return to U.S. arenas with Wings to his intimate 2007 set at Amoeba records in Los Angeles. The albums — Amoeba Gig, Paul Is Live, Choba B CCCP, Wings Over America — will be released July 12, 2019 via MPL/Capitol/UMe digitally, on CD and on both black and limited edition color vinyl.

AMOEBA GIG:
Amoeba Gig is the first full length commercial release of Paul’s surprise free concert at Hollywood’s Amoeba Music on June 27, 2007. To date only four songs have seen wide release as the Amoeba’s Secret EP, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards in 2008: “That Was Me” for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and “I Saw Her Standing There” for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. A few years later in November 2012, an extended 12-song excerpt of the Amoeba show titled Live in Los Angeles – The Extended Set was made available free to PaulMcCartney.com premium members for a limited period. And come July 12, 2019, a full 21-song recording documenting possibly the most intimate L.A. show Paul has ever played will be made available to the public for the first time. The millions of people not among the luckier than lucky few hundred rubbing elbows with the likes of Ringo Starr and Woody Harrelson during that once in a lifetime in-store set will be able to experience those performances of Beatles classics “The Long And Winding Road,” “I’ll Follow The Sun” and “I’ve Got A Feeling,” Flaming Pie’s “Calico Skies,” plus Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” Jan Garber’s “Baby Face” and an emotional rendition of “Here Today.” Additionally, the LP will include an exclusive soundcheck recording of “Coming Up.”

Amoeba Gig has been newly remixed by Paul’s engineer Steve Orchard and will be available in configurations including CD, 2 x 180g black vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – clear, LP2 – hazy amber transparent).

PAUL IS LIVE:
Recorded during the U.S. and Australian swings of the tour in support of 1993’s Off The Ground, Paul Is Live is Paul’s fifth live album. Originally released that same year, the album is famous for the multiple meanings and clues embedded in its title and cover art, all of which play on the “Paul Is Dead” conspiracy/hoax. In addition to a wealth of Wings and Beatles classics, covers of Roy Brown’s “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and Leiber and Stoller’s “Kansas City” and more, Paul Is Live also offers a peek behind the curtain: Three songs improvised on the spot and exclusive to the album, all recorded during rehearsals in various locations over the course of the tour.

Paul Is Live has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be available in configurations including CD, 2 x 180g black vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – opaque baby blue, LP2 – plush peach white opaque).

CHOBA B CCCP:
The live-in-studio Choba B CCCP (Russian for “Back In The USSR”) was released in the Soviet Union in 1988, making Paul the first Western artist to issue an album exclusively for that market. In a conscious decision to get back to his roots, Paul spontaneously spent two days covering his favorite hits from the 1950s. The sessions produced 22 songs in total (and one of the outtakes being a version of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There”). Choba B CCCP was a deeply personal album and a way to acknowledge fans who had supported him and The Beatles since the start. “When I was very young I asked my dad if people wanted peace,” Paul explained at the time. “He said to me, ‘Yes, people everywhere want peace – it’s usually politicians that cause trouble.’ It always seemed to me that the way The Beatles’ music was admired in the USSR tended to prove his point, that people the world over have a great deal in common. In releasing this record exclusively in the Soviet Union, I extend the hand of peace and friendship to the people of Russia.” Choba B CCCP was released in the rest of the world following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Choba B CCCP has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be reissued as the original 11-track Russian release. It will be available in configurations including CD, 180g black vinyl, and limited edition opaque yellow vinyl.

WINGS OVER AMERICA:
Rare #1-charting triple live album, Wings Over America is a document of one the most sophisticated and dazzling rock shows of the 1970s or any decade. Paul and the band would eventually perform to more than 600,000 people at 31 shows in the US and Canada, ending with three historic nights at The Forum in Los Angeles. It’s no exaggeration to say that the excitement that greeted Paul McCartney & Wings (Linda McCartney, Joe English, Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch) in the spring of 1976 as they embarked on what would become their one and only North American tour was overwhelming. Having released four consecutive chart topping albums — Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound – not to mention 1973’s Academy Award-winning James Bond theme “Live and Let Die” – Wings’ career was in full flight… and as Paul’s first U.S. tour since The Beatles, the sheer joy of both the band and its fans were off the charts throughout the 90 hours of recordings distilled into this triple album. Wings Over America was last reissued in 2013 as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection series winning the Grammy Award for Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.

Wings Over America will be available in configurations including double CD, 3 x 180g triple vinyl, and limited edition color vinyl (LP1 – transparent red, LP2 – transparent green, LP3 – transparent blue) both come with original souvenir poster.

PAUL AND LINDA McCARTNEY PRESENT REISSUE OF PROFESSOR LONGHAIR LIVE ON THE QUEEN MARY

PROFESSOR LONGHAIR
LIVE ON THE QUEEN MARY

Reissue of 1975 Performance Presented by Paul and Linda McCartney

Vinyl, CD & Deluxe Formats Feature Foreword by Hugh Laurie

Remastered at The Music Shed, New Orleans

Out April 5 via Harvest / MPL

“… pianistic intricacies–which inspired Fats Domino, Huey Smith, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and other New Orleans luminaries” — Robert Christgau, Consumer Guide

Originally released in 1978 on Harvest Records, Professor Longhair’s Live on the Queen Mary documents a legendary performance from the Venus and Mars album release party thrown by Paul and Linda McCartney and Wings in 1975.

Live on the Queen Mary was recorded March 24, 1975 on its titular cruise ship, while docked in Long Beach, California. Highlights include the rollicking “Mess Around,” the standards “Stagger Lee,” “Everyday I Have the Blues,” “I’m Movin’ On,” and Professor Longhair’s own hits “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Tipitina” about which Hugh Laurie writes, “Because that live version of Tipitina, oh sweet Lord. If the record had nothing else on it, it would still be a treasure beyond price.”

Professor Longhair a/k/a Henry Roeland “Roy” Byrd (December 19, 1918 – January 30, 1980) was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist. He was active in two distinct periods, first in the heyday of early rhythm and blues and later on during the resurgence of interest in traditional jazz surrounding the beginnings of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Professor Longhair’s influence was crucial to many of his fellow New Orleans musical legends, such as Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John, all of whom were touched by his rumba, mambo, and calypso piano based blues sound.

Egypt Station was released September 7, 2018. The album entered the Billboard 200 at #1, making it the third Non-Beatles/Wings McCartney effort to top the U.S. chart and Paul’s first Stateside #1 since 1982’s Tug Of War—and Paul’s first solo album to enter the chart at #1. Egypt Station won unanimous praise from critics the world over: In a four-star lead review, Rolling Stone said, “Macca keeps adding new gems to his songbook, with nothing to prove except he’s the only genius who can do this… (And, oh yeah — in his spare time, he happens to still be the greatest live performer on Earth.)” London’s Sunday TimesQ Magazine and MOJO also awarded the album four stars, while The New York Times’ Jon Pareles observed, “McCartney contemplates mortality and pain while still trying to offer love and strength.”  TIME declared Egypt Station “Essential… a document of McCartney’s spirit, which is still irrepressible more than five decades after the Beatles made their debut.” NPR said, “This is his best album in maybe 20 years.” People noted, “Egypt Station is a tour through the imagination of one of our greatest artists  — what’s not to love? It’s a celebration of all the things that make McCartney great: hope, exuberance, open mindedness and sweet melody. These days, we need all of these more than ever.”

Paul’s Freshen Up Tour continues to pack stadiums and arenas across the globe, resuming March 20 at the National Stadium in Santiago, Chile, and running through July 13 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Las Vegas (January 15, 2019) – In the wake of the triumphant headlining stand at the Austin City Limits festival that the Austin American Statesman called, “A Marathon to Remember Forever,” Paul McCartney has added yet another show to the upcoming U.S. leg of his new “FRESHEN UP” tour. Paul and his team are constantly upgrading state-of-the-art audio and video technology into the live shows that ensures an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house making a Paul McCartney concert never anything short of life-changing.

PAUL McCARTNEY’S: THE BRUCE McMOUSE SHOW PLAYING IN SELECT THEATERS AROUND THE WORLD ON JANUARY 21ST

ABRAMORAMA PARTNERS WITH MPL/Capitol/UMe TO RELEASE
PAUL McCARTNEY’S THE BRUCE McMOUSE SHOW
PLAYING IN SELECT CINEMAS AROUND THE WORLD
ON JANUARY 21ST

The theatrical premiere of this previously never-before-seen film features
live performances from Paul McCartney & Wings
and the animated Bruce McMouse

New York, NY / January 10, 2019: Abramorama announced today a partnership with MPL/Capitol/UMe to premiere Paul McCartney’s The Bruce McMouse Show in select theaters around the world on January 21. The Bruce McMouse Show is a previously never-before seen film that tells the story of how Paul McCartney and Wings came to meet the inimitable impresario Bruce McMouse. Part concert film, part animated feature, The Bruce McMouse Show  features footage from Wings’ 1972 European tour, interspersed with animated scenes that introduce a family of mice living under the stage.

After opening the film with ‘Big Barn Bed’ – the camera takes us down through the floorboards into this charming animated world. We see Bruce McMouse regale his children with stories from his past, when son Soily rushes into the room in a whirlwind of excitement announcing that “The Wings” are playing above them. As the concert plays on, Bruce declares to his wife Yvonne that Paul and the band need his help. Bruce then proceeds to venture on stage to offers his services as producer. As the concert progresses, the animated scenes culminate with dozens of animated mice flocking to the venue to see Wings play. ‘The Bruce McMouse Show’ has been fully restored in 2018 at Final Frame Post alongside a brand-new audio mix (stereo and 5.1) created at AIR Studios where it was also mastered.

Watch a special teaser video here

The film was directed by Barry Chattington and produced by Roger Cherrill with the live elements taken from four shows in The Netherlands and Germany in 1972. Paul viewed the initial concert edit and realized there was great potential in the material captured. Prior to the European tour Paul had the idea of a family of mice and sketched the characters. Picking up the idea, Eric Wylam took Paul’s sketches and created the final McMouse family. This storyline was incorporated and used as a linking theme within the concert footage. The voice-overs for the animated mice took place at the end of 1973, recorded by Paul and Linda McCartney, Deryck Guyler, Pat Coombs and Derek Nimmo. Production stretched from 1972 through to 1977 when the film was complete, however with changes in the band’s line-up and music scene, the project was held in the MPL archives.

Evan Saxon, Head of West Coast Acquisitions and Business Development at Abramorama stated, “There’s no greater compliment than to be entrusted to oversee the global release a Paul McCartney film and continue our long-standing relationship with The Beatles family.  Fans attending these special screenings of The Bruce McMouse Show will be transported to a Paul McCartney & Wings concert with the best seat in the house, just above Bruce McMouse and his family.”

Creative Visions has partnered not only with Paul and “Who Cares” producers Subtractive Inc., but also with Facebook, Enso, Artemis Rising Foundation and the Blue Chip Foundation to launch #WhoCaresIDo, a  campaign inspired by the song and film. #WhoCaresIDo hopes to reach millions, first raising awareness and engagement regarding the issues addressed by the song and film, then providing them with tools to take action through a network of experts and partners, empowering people to treat others with support and kindness.

The #WhoCaresIDo campaign draws upon the power of the song and film, as well as Creative Visions’ efforts over the last 20 years through its global network of creative activists. Creative Visions is currently building a global coalition of nonprofit partners that will create an umbrella of #WhoCaresIDo organizations and resources to bring compassion to homes, communities and workplaces.  “Millions of people around the world feel silenced, subjugated–bullied– and believe that no one cares,” says Creative Visions Founder Kathy Eldon. “Our intention with this campaign is to put the power of the song to work and inspire us to show up and care–and let others know that we do care.”

“Who Cares” was directed by Brantley Gutierrez and Ryan Heffington. Director of photography was Linus Sandgren. The film was produced by Kyle Schember and Michael Abbott for Subtractive Inc.
