Parquet Courts: Live at Third Man Records

Third Man Records is excited to announce the March 3rd release of Parquet Courts: Live At Third Man Record – the latest addition to the Live At Third Man series.

Parquet Courts brought a sweltering performance to the hallowed grounds of Third Man’s Blue Room onJune 5th of last year – and very fortunately, TMR was able to lovingly capture it with their one-of-a-kind, direct-to-acetate recording process. The set included a dynamic selection of songs from last year’s critically acclaimed album Sunbathing Animals, as well as the 2013 EP, Tally All The Things That You Broke. The end result? A record that will have your feet stompin’ and body rockin’ as soon as the needle hits. Track listing included below for your perusal.

1. Duckin & Dodgin
2. Bodies
3. Black & White
4. Vienna II
5. Always Back In Town
6. Dear Ramona
7. Descend
8. Instant Disassembly
9. Raw Milk
10. Into the Garden
11. Sunbathing Animal

For a tasty sample, check out clips of “Sunbathing Animal” and “Vienna II” HERE. Look out for the pre-order, which will be available in February at thirdmanstore.com.

Philip Selway © Deirdre O’Callaghan (LOW RES)

The fall of 2014 saw the release of Philip Selway’s exquisite sophomore solo album Weatherhouse. Described by Stereogum as “a pop record with an artful touch that further develops his tender emotional spin on expansively moody sounds” and hailed by Rolling Stone as “a sweeping suite full of moody psychedelic arrangements,” the aural accomplishments of Weatherhouse have been embraced by critics and fans alike.

Philip recently made his solo US TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing a moving rendition of “It Will End In Tears” backed by the Dap Kings. Come spring, fans will finally be able to witness the live translation of Philip’s solo catalogue as he hits the road for a run of full band dates around his Coachella appearances. Joining him on the road will be Adem Ilhan, Kath Mann (AKA Quinta) and Chris Vatalaro.

Tickets for the newly announced dates are on sale January 16 and can be purchased here.

PAUL McCARTNEY: FROM THE RECORD BREAKING VIDEO GAME DESTINY, “HOPE FOR THE FUTURE” TO BE RELEASED ON VINYL

12” VINYL INCLUDING PAUL’S ORIGINAL ANTHEM PLUS FOUR SPECIAL MIXES OUT JANUARY 13

Hope For The Future
Hope For The Future

Paul McCartney’s song “Hope For The Future”, which was released digitally in December, will be released physically on 180-gram 12” vinyl next week. The song was written by Paul for the record-breaking video game Destiny.

Produced by Giles Martin and mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent, “Hope For The Future” is as epic as the game itself which smashed records with its half-billion-dollar first day revenues. The song, which features an orchestra, was recorded between Paul’s Hog Hill Mill studio in Sussex, Avatar Studios in New York, Abbey Road Studios and Air Studios in London.

It goes without saying that Paul McCartney has written countless hit singles, orchestral scores, electronica works, film themes, and has consistently changed the world with his music. Listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time, Paul has now added another first to his impressive list: “Hope For The Future” marks the first time that Paul has ever written specifically for a video game — one poised to become the most successful franchise of its kind.

Details of the release are confirmed today and the original version of the track from the Destinycredits will be made digitally available alongside four special mixes.

The vinyl tracklisting is as follows:

SIDE A
A1) Hope For The Future (Main)
A2) Hope For The Future (Thrash)
A3) Hope For The Future (Mirwais Mix)

SIDE B
B1) Hope For The Future (Beatsession Mix)
B2) Hope For The Future (Jaded Mix)

Talking about the writing process Paul said:

“When you’re writing something like “Hope For The Future”, which is custom made, it is like doing a portrait for someone. You have to use your imagination and work out what they need, what they’re going to want and then what you want to give them. Then you’ve got to combine those three things into something that you still think maintains integrity. So in the game you’re basically trying to save Earth from the invaders, the aliens, so that suggested to me the ‘hope for the future’ idea and I went from there. Then I thought it is not just a game song, this will get played outside the game so it has got to be stand alone too, you can’t have references to aliens or people will think ‘what’s he talking about?’ So it had to have its own stand alone meaning and integrity.”

Years in the making, Destiny is one of the biggest entertainment launches of 2014. The launch saw fans queuing through the night to get their first glimpse.  Stores across the world opened early in order to meet the demand. Made by Bungie, the studio behind Halo, and published by Activision, the company that brought you Call of DutyDestiny is expected to change the gaming industry.  The hype surrounding this release demonstrates how the interactive entertainment industry is overtaking Hollywood.

The vinyl will also come with a download card featuring all five tracks.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: VAULT PACKAGE #23

Vault #23
Vault #23

As 2015 marks ten years since the release of the White Stripes’ Get Behind Me Satan album and tour, Third Man Records is proud to use that as the focus of its 23rd Vault package. Completely dedicated to the White Stripes and highlighting their time in South America in 2005, this release should leave fans beyond satisfied.

Anchoring the box is the double LP Under Amazonian Lights recorded live in Manaus, Brazil on June 1st, 2005. Described by the local press as “deliciously irresponsible” and the first rock concert ever at the grand Teatro Amazonas Opera House, the performance that night was nothing short of amazing. Featuring a sublime cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lovesick Blues”, two versions (one electric, one acoustic) of “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known,” two versions of “Passive Manipulation” (both sublime), a snippet of Howlin Wolf’s “I Asked For Water” and ample marimba on “The Nurse” and what you have is one of the most iconic and memorable shows the White Stripes ever played. Both LPs will be pressed on blood red vinyl with stark black wisps.

So it should come as no surprise that we’d pair this LP with DVD footage from that performance. Words do not ably describe the beauty of the Teatro Amazonas nor the furor riled up by the White Stripes appearance. Not only was there fear that the amplification of the band would cause the plaster in the building to crack and possible fall and injure attendees, but out of custom/fear/lord-knows-what the crowd remained seated until being explicitly asked to stand from the stage by Jack White himself. If that wasn’t enough, during the show Jack and Meg ventured outside the venue to play an entirely unamplified version of “We Are Going to Be Friends” for the assembled multitude of fans unable to purchase tickets and watching the performance via closed-circuit feed. The resultant melee was arguably a riot and was lovingly captured by the film crew documenting that evening’s importance.  All together what it makes is one of the best true rock and roll moments of the past decade. Heck, Jack White even got married that day.

The accompanying 7” single is a perfect example of the material the Vault was explicitly created to release. “Let You Down” is a solo recording done by Jack White roundabout the year 2000. Featuring both electric guitar and electric bass, the true meat here is the multi-tracked four-part harmony voiced by White throughout the song. The entirety of lyrics here “No I’m never, no I’m never, no I’m never gonna let you down now” would be repurposed into the White Stripes 2005 recording “The Nurse” and the overall germination illustrated here is devilishly insightful. The b-side “Ain’t No Sweeter Than Rita Blues” is a quintessential White Stripes guitar/drums outtake instrumental that was recorded during the tracking of Get Behind Me Satan and subsequently unused and forgotten for the past ten years. Dare we say it’s everything you hope it would be, pressed on wonderful white vinyl and ready for your love.

If that was not enough (and really, it should be) Third Man has decided to throw caution to the wind and absolutely overload this package with more extras than any sane record label would ever consider. We’ve poked the Grammy Award-winning designer Rob Jones to put together a collection of newly designed postcards celebrating the White Stripes performances in Brazil in 2005. In one word…stunning. Rob was gracious enough to throw in a badass death head monkey design that was so tasty we had to turn it into substantive enamel pin. A silk-screened White Stripes poster with some super-secret hidden glow in the dark graphics was a no-brainer. If you’re wondering where you’ll keep this vast assortment of sundries, worry you no longer…a soft touch, telescoping box with the same devilish death head monkey graphic on the cover will become a new member in Vault households worldwide. Join the family now.

Meanwhile, as Lazaretto continues to dominate readers and critics polls alike, the album has garnered three GRAMMY award nominations including Best Alternative Music Album, as well as Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for its title track. The 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards will air Sunday, February 8, 2015 on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

Jack White has also been nominated in the Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package GRAMMY field, as art director for the Third Man & Revenant Records release The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume 1 (1917-27), bringing Jack’s career GRAMMY nomination total to 29—of which he was won nine. Third Man Records has also been recognized in two additional categories: Best Album Notes for The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume 1 (1917-27), and Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package for the vinyl box set release of Neil Young’s A Letter Home.

With the political murals of Northern Ireland as a reference point, U2 chose the artists and gave them complete creative freedom to create personal responses to U2’s music. The result is an exhilarating display of diversity in approach, style and commentary. Powerful and cognizant, Films of Innocence takes these artists and their works from the streets to the screen, as they scale the globe, play with time, and weave between heightened reality and animated dreamscapes. The result is an essential visual counterpoint to the album.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: DANNY KROHA “ANGELS WATCHING OVER ME”

Angels Watching Over Me
Angels Watching Over Me

“I was very reluctant to put this stuff out because there’s a ton of rootsy cornballs out there doing this kind of stuff and all of them play guitar way better than me. But I think I have something here that doesn’t really sound like anything else. The numbers that bounce really bounce. The numbers that drone really drone. I’m excited about this.” – Danny Kroha

We are too! The founding member of THE GORIES tried his hand at the banjo, dulcimer, diddley bow, washtub bass, jug and mouth organ for his first release under his own name, Angels Watching Over Me, and the result is a distinct step forward for gospel and folk. Kroha has consistently pushed himself to reinvention, and has influenced countless imitators and poseurs along the way. His guitar work with Rocket 455 is the most quintessentially “Detroit” rock and roll this side of the MC5. The record was recorded in a 100-year-old, vacant house in Detroit, and features songs popularized by the likes of Son House, I.D. Stamper, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Brother Will Hairston. This is a decidedly different Danny Kroha than we’ve seen in his past projects with Demolition Doll Rods and Danny and the Darleans, and we have to say… we like him. With Angels Watching Over Me, he firmly establishes himself as one of the pre-eminent practitioners of a genre we hold so dear.

The record will be available for pre-order mid-January with an official release date of January 27th. Check out a sneak peak of the song “Run Little Children,” the only Kroha original on the record, below.

“I was sitting by a pond in a park in Rochester, New York, playing my diddley bow, and this one came to me. Son House lived in that town for some years; I like to think he was smiling on me.” – Danny Kroha
