They Want My Soul

As reported by billboard.com, Spoon has leveled the digital vs brick and mortar retail playing field by introducing the newly minted Vinyl Gratification program.

The program turns the common practice of incentivizing digital pre-orders with “instant gratification” tracks by offering an indie-retail-only three-song vinyl 10-inch as an instant, well, Vinyl Gratification.

Beginning July 15, participating independent record stores will be listed at vinylgratification.com. Fans who pre-order Spoon’s They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista) will immediately receive the aforementioned limited edition 45 RPM vinyl 10-inch. But that’s not all, folks: On or after They Want My Soul’s August 5 release, those who bring their receipts back to the store where they pre-ordered will receive a stunning 180g white vinyl copy of the LP housed in a heavy 20-pt paper sleeve. Included on the 10″ is the first single from the album “Do You” which can also be heard here.
Britt Daniel says of the initiative:

A few weeks ago as we were figuring out how to roll out the new Spoon album I kept coming back to this: why do we incentivize people to buy our music from big outlets but we don’t extend the same courtesy to actual record stores? Case in point: why do we encourage listeners to buy early by offering “instant gratification” tracks for pre-orders of the digital album, yet there’s no special motivation for buying music from Waterloo or Reckless Records? And there’s no incentive to buy the format that so many of those listeners prefer—an actual physical item they can hold and read and play on a turntable.

So I came up with an idea, and today I’m pretty ecstatic to be able introduce the Vinyl Gratification program. It’s the first program of its kind; it encourages pre-ordering a vinyl copy of our new album They Want My Soul at independent record stores all over the US (and soon, internationally) by providing its own sort of instant gratification: a limited edition 10″ vinyl featuring three pre-release songs from the album that you can take home with you and put on your record player immediately. The great people at Record Store Day have generously offered to spread the word about the program and we’re launching with over 150 stores on board, well beyond our wildest dreams.

To rush this program into existence, we’re releasing the 10″ in a plain white sleeve, but rest assured we’re cutting no corners with regard to the audio. Have you ever noticed the difference in sound quality between 45 RPM and 33 RPM??? Yes, 33 RPM is amazing and warm, but 45 RPM on a larger format disc, with more physical representation of the music via record grooves, delivers even more stunning audio. We think the 10″s sound unbelievable, and we’re pretty sure you will too.

If like me, you’ve ever rushed home with a brand new record that you couldn’t wait to play—and couldn’t actually play until you slapped it onto your turntable—I hope the Vinyl Gratification program will bring back some magic for you. And I hope you’ll join us in supporting the independent record shops that have supported us for so long.

Britt Daniel

For those hankering for an even more instant bit of gratification ahead of They Want My Soul’s arrival, Spoon will be offering new track “Do You” as a downloadable instant grat. on iTunes, Amazon and Spoon Store with all pre-orders of They Want My Soul. PAUL McCARTNEY: FIRST EVER GREENSBORO, NC DATE ADDED TO OUT THERE TOUR

OCTOBER 30 – GREENSBORO COLISEUM

Paul McCartney © MJ Kim
Paul McCartney © MJ Kim

Paul McCartney has added another date to summer’s hottest ticket: The Out There world tour will touch down at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina-marking Paul’s historic first ever performance in the city of Greensboro.

Paul recently took a quick break from rehearsals for the tour, which resumes July 5 in Albany, NY, to film a special video message to his fans which can be seen here: http://smarturl.it/McCartneyFanMessage.

The Out There tour, as always, features music from the most beloved catalog in popular music, as Paul performs songs spanning his entire career – as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle. The set list will also include material from Paul’s most recent studio album NEW, a global hit upon its release last year.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity; in just three hours some of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music are relived; music which for many has shaped the very soundtrack of their lives. The last decade has seen Paul and his band perform in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people, and even broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 10+ years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show never disappoints.

The tour also uses state of the art technology and production to ensure the entire audience has the best possible experience. With massive screens, lasers, fireworks, unique video content and, of course, the best songs in the world, a Paul McCartney show is so much more than just an ordinary concert. Paul’s shows attract a multi generational audience from different backgrounds all brought together by his music.

Tickets for the Greensboro, NC date will be on sale Monday, June 30. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Thursday, June 26 at 10amthrough Sunday, June 29 at 10pm.

Keep checking PaulMcCartney.com for further announcements as the Out There tour expands into September and October.

PHILIP SELWAY: WEATHERHOUSE

SECOND SOLO LP OUT OCT. 7 IN THE U.S. ON BELLA UNION

LEAD TRACK “COMING UP FOR AIR” STREAMING HERE

Four years after the unexpected and exquisite treat that was Philip Selway’s debut album Familial, the man formerly known only as the drummer of Radiohead returns with his sophomore record, Weatherhouse. At ten tracks and 38 minutes, the album is as concise in shape as it is expansive in mood and assured in execution, mining a generally darker, fuller sound than its gentler, more acoustic-based predecessor and reflecting the band-centered nature of its construction and its creator’s growth in confidence.

Weatherhouse was made in collaboration with Adem Ilhan and Quinta; artists in their own right who had previously performed in Philip’s backing band. “From the outset,” Selway recalls, “we wanted the album to be the three of us, and we covered a lot of instruments between us. With a studio full of inspiring gear and a great-sounding desk, we felt like a band. Different musicians stretch you, and I felt stretched on Weatherhouse, but very enjoyably so.” Working mostly out of Radiohead’s studio in Oxfordshire, Adem also produced and engineered Weatherhouse, while Quinta played an equally integral role in the arrangements. The album was mixed by David Wrench.

Album opener “Coming Up For Air” sets the scene with its brooding, spectral mood, mantra-like pattern and Selway’s simmering, reverb-drenched vocal exploring the album’s dominant theme. “It’s very much about taking stock of my life. I wanted to convey a sense of release and affirmation,” he says. “This was the first song that we recorded. Immediately it felt in a very different space from Familial.” Click HERE to listen to the track.

The album’s talismanic qualities explore a world of hope and plans, connection and disconnection -between family, friends and self – and dreams and fears: “I love records that you can almost live in, where the songs become talismans that you take to heart. That’s what I was trying to create in Weatherhouse.” With its emotional frankness, haunting melodies and gripping tension, Selway has made a great artistic leap and created something that even the most experienced singer-songwriters would be proud of.

This weekend, Philip, Adem and Quinta begin a run of shows with Rambert Dance Company at their Southbank home. They perform a specially commissioned score for a series of Merce Cunningham ‘Events’, set against the backdrop of Gerhard Richter’s “Cage” paintings.

JACK WHITE: LAZARETTO DEBUTS AT #1

LAZARETTO ULTRA LP BREAKS ALL-TIME VINYL SOUNDSCAN RECORDS

© David Swanson
© David Swanson

“Easily the best rock album so far this year”-LOS ANGELES TIMES

“Highly-charged, wonderfully weird and typically eclectic treasure chest of tunes that rank with his best.”-USA TODAY

“He is just that much better than everybody else.”-LA WEEKLY

“Our six-string savior not only makes his guitar do things that will have you forgetting that Page and Plant are never to take to a stage together again; he is also keen to remind us in just whose hands now rests that Hammer of the Gods.”-FILTER

In the wake of overwhelmingly positive reviews, must-see TV appearances and monumental performances everywhere from Governors Ball to Bonnaroo, Jack White has now seen his sophomore album Lazaretto (Third Man Records/Columbia) debut at #1 on the U.S. album chart.

Lazaretto is Jack’s second #1 debut in as many albums, its 137,732 first week total surpassing that of 2012’s Blunderbuss.

Additionally, the Lazaretto vinyl ULTRA LP has sold over 40,000 copies — the highest first-week vinyl sales since Soundscan began tracking sales data in 1991.

Lazaretto also debuted at #1 in Canada and Denmark.

Finally, Jack White’s world tour in support of Lazaretto continues to garner arguably the most enthusiastic rave reviews of Jack’s — or anyone’s — career, so rather than living out your days in regret, pick up tickets for a date in your town before they’re gone: http://jackwhiteiii.com/tour-dates/

Lazaretto
Lazaretto

“Jack White has made himself a high-concept yet wholehearted restoration of the late-1960s guitar hero: cranked up to distortion, hollering straight from the swamp, hurling riffs like thunderbolts” — THE NEW YORK TIMES

“White’s set was marked by a series of dramatic stops and starts, with the band exceptionally tight in their movements, giving off the impression White must have found the best of the business in Nashville.” — BILLBOARD

“White’s best songs combine his songwriting chops with his boundless charisma, and Lazaretto has both in spades — the swaggeringly funky ‘Three Women’ and the strutting title track are instant classics.” — ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
“Frankly, I don’t know how much is left to say about this man. He’s a master of craft and performance like few others, especially in the modern age.” — CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

The day has finally arrived: Jack White’s new studio album, Lazaretto, is out today in North America on Third Man Records/Columbia. The weeks-long tease of advance tracks from the haunting instrumental “High Ball Stepper,” the intoxicating “Just One Drink” and the searing rave-up title track has mercifully come to an end, with the album now fully available digitally at

iTunes and Amazon. For the physical-format-predisposed, brick and mortar retailers will carry Lazaretto compact discs (also available via Amazon) and ULTRA LP vinyl, which can also be acquired through Third Man Records.

Jack has announced yet another slew of dates on his barely begun, yet already wildly acclaimed, world tour. These new dates include several UK engagements as well as a host of performances in the United States at historic venues ranging from The Newport Folk Festival to The Bleacher Theater at Boston’s famed Fenway Park to Colorado’s breathtaking Red Rocks Amphitheater. Fans are encouraged to consult http://jackwhiteiii.com/tour-dates/ for details and on sale information. These newly announced shows can be found below along with previously unveiled tour stops.

Tonight, NPR Music will provide a video webcast of Jack’s set at the storied Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA. All pertinent information can be found here. Tune into NPR tonight at 9:45pm PST for what promises to be raucously entertaining celebration of Lazaretto‘s release.

Last night, Jack was featured as a musical and talk guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During his time on the Tonight Show stage, Jack peeled the paint off the walls of the Tonight Show studios with two songs from Lazaretto including the title track  and “Just One Drink”.
