DAMON ALBARN NEW ALBUM: EVERYDAY ROBOTS

Title Track Video World Broadcast Premiere Tonight on Sundance Channel

Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots Album Packshot
A new studio album by Damon Albarn – his first solo record – titled Everyday Robots will be released by Warner Bros. Records on April 29, 2014.

Recorded last year at Albarn’s West London studio 13, Everyday Robots is produced by Richard Russell of XL, with whom Damon produced Bobby Womack’s The Bravest Man In The Universe – and features guest appearances from Brian Eno and Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes).

Led by title track “Everyday Robots”, the 12 songs here invite the listener into Albarn’s world for a genuine ‘one-to-one’ and are the most soul-searching and autobiographical since his musical journey began: a career that started with Blur and spans Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Mali Music, Monkey: Journey To The West, Dr Dee and Africa Express.

The songs’ subject matter is more directly personal than before and is inspired by Albarn’s experiences from early childhood to now, including the trappings of our modern existence, computer games, mobile phones and nature versus technology.

The lead, title track “Everyday Robots” is accompanied by a video directed by artist and designer Aitor Throup that receives its world broadcast premiere tonight on Sundance Channel (10:45PM ET on dual feed cable; 7:45PM PT on DIRECTV and DISH). The film is a digital portrait of Albarn by Throup and uses CGI software and actual cranial scans and facial reconstruction techniques to explore and reveal the process of building a uniquely personal portrait of an artist and individual.

Throup also creatively directed the visual concepts for the single and album artwork, as well as shooting Albarn for the album cover image.

Damon Albarn is confirmed to appear at The Governors Ball Music Festival taking place June 6-8 on Randall’s Island in New York City with a band including guitarist Seye, drummer Pauli The PSM, bassist Jeff Wootton and Mike Smith on keyboards.

Everyday Robots will be available as a digital download, CD and 12″ vinyl.

The full tracklisting is:

1. Everyday Robots
2. Hostiles
3. Lonely Press Play
4. Mr Tembo
5. Parakeet
6. The Selfish Giant
7. You And Me
8. Hollow Ponds
9. Seven High
10. Photographs (You Are Taking Now)

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS: FRANK FAIRFIELD – “DUNCAN & BRADY” b/w “DEVIL’S DREAM MEDLEY” TMR 244

Our first Blue Series single of the year is a dark and delirious slice of new American Primitive from the modern master of the form, Frank Fairfield.

For the uninitiated, Frank is a Fresno California native (and now Los Angeles resident) and a genius on the fiddle, guitar, banjo who possesses a broken soulful voice that perfectly reflects the tragedy and damnation of the subject matter reflected in the timeless American music that he’s made his stock and trade through his albums on Tompkins Square, and through countless tours from coast to coast.

On side A, Frank delivers his unique take on the traditional murder ballad “Duncan & Brady,” (available for your listening pleasure here) which details a barroom shooting of police officer James Brady in St. Louis back in 1890. The song has been interpreted a number of times over the years from a wide range of luminaries, including Leadbelly, Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk and Judy Henske. The B side finds Frank switching up from the guitar to the fiddle and being accompanied by Zac Sokolow also on fiddle performing “Devil’s Dream Medley.” “Devil’s Dream Medley” blends the duo fiddles with vocal elements from the song “June Apple,” popularized by Wade Ward and Doc Watson.

Frank Fairfield’s Blue Series will be released on 7″ vinyl and iTunes on January 21st and will be everywhere fine independent records are sold. It is available for pre-order or distro now.

THE DEAD WEATHER: “Open Up (That’s Enough)” / “Rough Detective”

AVAILABLE DIGITALLY WORLDWIDE JANUARY 14

January 14 will see the digital release of The Dead Weather’s two brand new studio recordings, “Open Up (That’s Enough)” and “Rough Detective.” Previously available exclusively through Third Man Records’ subscription-only Vault series as a limited edition yellow jacket colored vinyl 7″ in a custom glue-pocket picture sleeve, these roaring new tracks will be available to the general public digitally via iTunes and all other digital retailers.

In a unique long-term strategy, “Open Up (That’s Enough)” and “Rough Detective” are the first of a series of two-song sets The Dead Weather will be releasing up until 2015, at which time the singles–plus numerous other album-only tracks–will be collected into a full album. The songs will be released digitally, but not until TMR Vault packages containing the physical singles have been dispatched to subscribers.

More importantly, the “Open Up (That’s Enough)” / “Rough Detective” single is unlike anything else The Dead Weather has ever done before, while both songs serve as ample reminders of the ferocity of this motley collection of low-lifes, grifters and ne’er-do-wells.

Stay tuned to thedeadweather.com and thirdmanrecords.com/vault for information about future releases.

THIRD MAN RECORDS PRESENTS VAULT PACKAGE #19 FEATURING THE WHITE STRIPES

Do you like the White Stripes? Do you like experiments? Do you like the Vault? Do you like combining all three? We do.

For our 19th installment of the Vault, we’re doing something we’ve never done before. Something that Vault members have been clamoring for…the exclusive, limited, colored vinyl edition of a record.

As you probably know, TMR tries to release a limited version of every record we do. That limited edition is usually available only at certain locations or stores, while the black vinyl version is kept in print forever.

This package will consist of limited colored vinyl pressings of all of the White Stripes singles from their album Elephant.

These include…

“Seven Nation Army”

“I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself”

“The Hardest Button to Button”

“There’s No Home For You Here”

The b-sides consist of covers of some of Detroit’s most pre-eminent artists in 2003…

“Good to Me” written by Brendan Benson and Jason Falkner and originally released on Benson’s 2002 album Lapalco.

“Who’s to Say…” written by Dan Miller and released by his outfit Blanche in 2003 on their album If We Can’t Trust the Doctors…

“St. Ides of March” written by the Soledad Brothers and released on their self-titled album of 2000.

As well as a White Stripes live medley of “I Fought Piranhas / Let’s Build a Home” recorded at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York.

Each of these tracks has been remastered from the original analog sources, and in the case of “…March” and “Piranhas” where there were no analog masters, we used only the finest digital files that could withstand sitting unused on a hard drive for over ten years.

The artwork on all the singles has been tidied up, spell-checked and given that special Third Man “je ne sais quoi”

“There’s No Home For You Here”, which was originally coupled with a generic company sleeve, now has stunning new artwork. It looks electrifying!

And these sleeves FEEL amazing. Employing a process called (we’re not making this up) “soft touch aqueous coating” each of these glue-pocket sleeves feels like a hybrid between rubber and lambskin. It’s difficult to describe, but immediately noticeable and amazing in person.

Each record will be pressed on clear vinyl with with an added vinyl highlight color insertion of either red, black or white. For “There’s No Home…” all three of those colors will be added to clear vinyl, to make something truly exciting.

All of this will be housed in a custom-made telescoping box, so that these singles can forever live together with distinction in your record collection.

Later in 2014 each of the singles will be available individually, on black vinyl, with no box, to the general public.

NIRVANA INDUCTED INTO ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

Nirvana has officially been voted into the Rock and Roll of Fame.

The 2014 ballot marked the first time Nirvana was eligible for nomination, as its debut single “Love Buzz” was released in 1988. This year was also the second time that the public had the chance to vote alongside the artists, rock scholars and music professionals that make up the RRHOF committee.

Reached for comment, Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl had the following to say:

“This is a great honor. Thank you to the people who nominated and voted for us. Thank you most of all to Kurt Cobain. And to everyone who”s kept Rock music going strong for 60 years and counting.”–Krist Novoselic

“For once… I”m speechless. From the basements, to the dingy clubs, to the broken down vans, to… the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I”d like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock and roll. Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock and roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist, without whom I would not be here today.”–Dave Grohl

Nirvana was formed in 1987 by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. The band”s debut album Bleach was recorded for $606.17 and released on the Seattle-based Sub Pop label in 1989. Nirvana”s sophomore album and major label debut Nevermind was released in 1991 and elevated Cobain, Novoselic and newly recruited drummer Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, WA cult band to generational spokesmen who”d unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to No. 1 the world over and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era. Nevermind returned unaffected rock “n” roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, proving a singular inspiration for fans and musicians for generations to come. And the massive success of Nevermind meant that In Utero was essentially the first record Nirvana would make with any expectations from the public. As such, In Utero was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a mantle they”d never seen coming–and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. Since Cobain”s untimely death in 1994, posthumous Nirvana releases have included MTV Unplugged In New York (featuring the recorded debut of live guitarist Pat Smear, originally recruited for the In Utero tour), the Live, Tonight, Sold Out video, the live From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah, the With The Lights Out box set, and expanded 20th anniversary reissues of BleachNevermind and In Utero.

BOB MOULD: WORKBOOK 25

25th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION OUT FEBRUARY 25, 2014

FEBRUARY 27 “25 YEARS OF WORKBOOK” NOISE POP PERFORMANCE TO BE FOLLOWED BY SIX DATE COMMEMORATIVE TOUR MARCH 1-8

When the intense and inhumanly prolific career of the legendary Hüsker Dü went supernova in 1988, Bob Mould all but went into self-imposed exile.

Mould would re-emerge the following year with his first solo album–the incredibly impassioned and personal Workbook.

While recognized from day one as an astonishing guitarist, as well as a master of pop songcraft discernible even through the ear-splitting din of Hüsker Dü classics like Zen Arcade and New Day Rising, Mould’s compositions and performances on Workbook plumbed emotional depths and hit musical heights few expected. Instant classics like “Wishing Well” and “See A Little Light” would remain live staples of Mould solo sets for decades to come.

On February 25, 2014 Omnivore Recordings will commemorate the 25th anniversary of this iconic work with the deluxe 2-CD 2-LP Workbook 25. In addition to the original album’s 11 tracks, the first CD adds “All Those People Know,” originally issued as the B-side of the single “See A Little Light.” The second CD is Bob’s complete 1989 performance at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro. 13 of the 17 tracks are previously unissued from this mythical show, which features music from the then two-week old Workbook, as well as Hüsker Dü favorites and a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson’s classic “Shoot Out The Lights.” Workbook 25 will also make the album available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, pressed on 2 LPs for sonic superiority. The vinyl edition will include “All Those People Know” as well.

Pre-orders for Workbook 25 can be placed at
http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/records/bob-mould/

Workbook 25‘s release will be followed in short order by a previously announced “25 Years of Workbook” set February 27 at the Noise Pop festival in San Francisco and a six-date run of select, intimate dates where Bob, along with long-time bassist Jason Narducy, will be performing selections from Workbook as well as other songs in his catalog that sit nicely alongside this album.

The itinerary is as follows:

Fri February 27 – San Francisco – Great American Music Hall (Noise Pop Festival)
Sat March 1st – Chicago – Old Town
Sun March 2nd – Chicago – City Winery
Tues March 4th – Minneapolis – The Women’s Club
Wed March 5th – Washington DC – 9:30 Club
Fri March 7th – New York – City Winery
Sat March 8th – New York – City Winery

For tickets, additional information etc., visit individual show pages as hyperlinked in the above itinerary.

Originally released May 2, 1989, Workbook is a singular statement of renewal.  It has proven an inspiration to a generation of musicians ranging from Dave Grohl to Ben Gibbard. Ryan Adams describes the album as “the sound of the internal and the subconscious, of dream, of regret, and of a silence that was lingering.”

And the folks at the Grammys must agree with the critics, nominating …Like Clockwork for Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, plus “My God Is The Sun” for Best Rock Performance. Meanwhile, we weren’t exaggerating about those Best of 2013 notices, which include:

“Homme combines menacing riffs and glammy refinement, sounding like Bowie reborn as a winking dark lord of the underworld… the king of Queens still has the best hard-rock falsetto of his generation.”–ROLLING STONE #6 Best Albums of 2013

#8 Album of 2013–AMAZON

“Queens of the Stone Age¹s sixth album may be their first for an indie label, but they¹re still making huge and bombastic music that sounds like it was built for arenas… a sleazy, strutting vibe that somehow manage to be both knowingly ironic and totally sincere.”–BUZZFEED #20 Album of 2013

#18 Album of 2013–CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“The nightmare carousel grinds back into motion. More real, raw and direct than ever before”–CRAVE #1 Album of 2013

“Josh Homme’s vocals have never sounded better, easily traveling from detached cool to fiery rocker and back again.”–NEWSDAY #8 Album of 2013

“Six years was definitely worth the wait for Queens of the Stone Age fans. Sure .. Like Clockwork is chock full of special guests like Dave Grohl, Elton John, Trent Reznor and Alex Turner among others, but this is one case where the music overshadows the names. ‘My God Is the Sun’ and ‘I Sat by the Ocean’ were released as singles, but … Like Clockwork is a true album listening experience in a singles era and well worth taking in from front to back. … Like Clockwork sits atop
our Top Rock and Metal Albums of 2013.”–NOISECREEP #1 Album of 2013

“For those who still believe rock-and-roll should be slimey, sinister stuff.”–WASHINGTON POST #9 Best Pop Singles of 2013
