McCARTNEY AFTER 9/11

Highly-Anticipated Feature-Length Documentary “THE LOVE WE MAKE” Chronicles Paul McCartney’s Cathartic Journey Through New York City In The Aftermath of 9/11.

To Debut on SHOWTIME September 10th At 9:00 ET/PT

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 19, 2011) – As the country prepares to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, SHOWTIME will premiere the highly-anticipated feature documentary THE LOVE WE MAKE, which chronicles Paul McCartney’s poignant and cathartic journey through the streets of New York City in the aftermath of the World Trade Center’s destruction. It also traces the planning and performance of the monumental benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, “The Concert for New York City,” which took place less than six weeks after the terrorist attacks.  Directed by iconic documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter, Salesman, Grey Gardens) and his award-winning filmmaking partner, Bradley Kaplan (Muhammad and Larry, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!,Sand and Sorrow), THE LOVE WE MAKE was shot in the signature cinéma vérité style that Maysles pioneered and Windows 7 Clave made famous when he filmed the Beatles’ first visit to America in the legendary 1964 documentary What’s Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.  Shooting once again in 16mm black & white, Maysles’ camera intimately captures McCartney’s personal journey to help heal the city that welcomed him with open arms in 1964. The announcement was made today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.

On the morning of September 11, 2001 McCartney was on a plane on the tarmac in New York City, scheduled to leave the country when the attacks took place.  Grounded, he returned to the city and witnessed first-hand the shock and devastation that overtook the United States.  He returned to the city and saw first-hand the destruction and tragic consequences of one of the most horrific days in U.S. history.  Directors Maysles and Kaplan, along with Editor Ian Markiewicz (The Beales of Grey Gardens) assembled extraordinary, intimate, never-before-seen footage of McCartney rehearsing for the benefit concert, connecting with New Yorkers on the city streets, and storytelling behind-the-scenes at interviews with Dan Rather, Howard Stern and others.
Windows 8 Clave Additionally, the film features performances from the benefit concert itself and unparalleled access backstage with McCartney and luminaries from the worlds of music, Hollywood and politics, including David Bowie, Steve Buscemi, Eric Clapton, President Bill Clinton, Sheryl Crow, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Mick Jagger, Jay Z, Billy Joel, Elton John, Stella McCartney, Governor George Pataki, Keith Richards, James Taylor, Pete Townsend, and many more.

Says McCartney, “It was an honor to be able to help New York and America at that time in its history. There was a feeling of shock and fear in the air that I thought we could help alleviate with music. And the fact that so many people stepped up to join us made for a very uplifting evening for us all.”

“Paul McCartney and Albert Maysles are each, in their own fields, iconic artists whose collaboration goes back more than 40 years,” said Nevins.  “In the days following 9/11, they joined forces once again to make a very personal film that is a real testament to the spirit and resiliency of New York City.  We are very proud to be able to premiere this film.”

Filmmaker Maysles adds, “There was so much suffering as a result of 9/11 it’s hard to imagine how one might bring relief to those who were impacted by the attacks, and honor those firefighters, police officers and rescue workers who lost their lives in their heroic attempt to help others.  But Paul had the answer: music and a film that would tell the full story.”

THE LOVE WE MAKE is a Maysles Films, Inc. Production.  A Film by Albert Maysles, Bradley Kaplan, and Ian Markiewicz.  Directed by Bradley Kaplan and Albert Maysles.  Edited by Ian Markiewicz.  Cinematography by Albert Maysles.  Produced by Bradley Kaplan.

BLACK MILK: “BRAIN” B/W “ROYAL MEGA” (TMR-101) THIRD MAN RECORDS’ FIRST FORAY INTO HIP HOP OUT NOW

Third Man Records is excited to announce the release of “Brain” b/w “Royal Mega” (TMR-101), a new single by acclaimed Detroit MC and producer Black Milk, who co-produced both tracks with Third Man’s Jack White.

Third Man’s first foray into the hip hop world would naturally be a release from one of the most vital hip hop artists around. Black Milk (born Curtis Cross) made his recorded debut in 2004 as a member of B.R. Gunna on the Dirty District Vol. 2 compilation and released his solo debut Sound of the City the following year. Since then, Black Milk has built a rep as brilliant producer, working with the likes of the late J Dilla, Slum Village, and Lloyd Banks, while releasing four more solo albums (including 2010’s Album of the Year which cracked the Billboard 200) as well as numerous collaborations, most recently Random Axe (with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson).

Performed with a live 9-piece backing band, Black Milk’s debut single for Third Man is a funk and soul imbibed slice of classic head nodding hip hop.  Both tracks are written by Black Milk and co-produced by Black Milk and Jack White–who also contributes guitars to A-side “Brain” and drums to B-side “Royal Mega.”

“Brain” b/w “Royal Mega” is available now at finer vendors of independent vinyl, via thirdmanrecords.com and digitally from iTunes.

BEASTIE BOYS BECOME ACTION FIGURES IN NEW SPIKE JONZE-DIRECTED VIDEO

Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA, and Special Guest Santigold Elude Mercenaries In Thrill-Packed “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” Clip

Having traveled through time and space in previous videos, Beastie Boys enter yet another new frontier in the brand new “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win”: Under the direction of Spike Jonze (who has previously worked with the band on the classic “Sabotage” clip among others), Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA and guest vocalist Santigold become action figures. GI B Boys, if you will.

The transformation comes with a price: “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” finds Beastie Boys and Santi pursued by a team of assassins hell bent on their termination. Over the course of the epic clip, our heroes make one death defying escape after another, traveling across land, sea and sky as they elude and combat snipers, zombies, sharks and more.

“Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” is the second video from Beastie Boys’ universally acclaimed Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (Capitol), the first being the extended video for “Make Some Noise” a/k/a Fight For Your Right Revisited, which was directed by the band’s own Adam “MCA” Yauch and which Time magazine described as having more stars “than in a Judd Apatow flick.”

PAUL McCARTNEY: SECOND CHICAGO AND MONTREAL DATES ADDED BY POPULAR DEMAND

Due to overwhelming popular demand, Paul McCartney’s On The Run tour has added second shows in Montreal and Chicago . The newly announced dates are July 27 at the Bell Centre in Montreal and August 1 at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

Tickets for the additional shows are on sale now: Chicago tickets can be purchased at Tickets.com and via 1-800-THE-CUBS, while Montreal tickets are available at the Bell Centre Box Office, by phone at (514) 790-2525 or 1 877 668-8269, or online www.evenko.ca

The new shows bring Paul McCartney’s On The Run tour to a tally of eight North American dates, kicking off July 15 and 16 with McCartney’s first ever shows at Yankee Stadium in New York City, and proceeding through July 24 at Comerica Park in Detroit, July 26 and 27 at Montreal’s Bell Centre, July 31 and August 1 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and August 4 at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Each and every one of this summer’s On The Run dates can safely be predicted to feature nearly three hours of the world’s most familiar and beloved music, with hits, deep cuts and surprises spanning McCartney’s unrivaled catalogue of Beatles, Wings, solo and Fireman classics.

McCartney’s recently completed Up and Coming Tour played over three dozen shows to more than 1,000,000 fans from its March 2010 start through its June 10, 2011 conclusion at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, drawing arguably the most enthusiastic audiences and critical noticecs of McCartney’s peerless near-50-year career, including:

“Some things are ageless, and McCartney’s one of them — he still radiates youthfulness like a packed playground. At a sold-out MGM Grand Garden… He was a study in nonchalance, ambling about the huge arena stage as if he was performing in his living room in front of a small group of friends.”–LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

“A Paul McCartney concert makes up for every bad show you’ve ever seen in your life. Seriously… The strange thing about seeing a Paul McCartney concert is, after three hours, you actually feel lighter, your feet hurt less – buoyed on by Paul’s constant smiles and some of the greatest music ever”–AMERICAN SONGWRITER

“Of the 15,000-plus who attended this show, most, I’m assuming, will put it down as one of their favorite shows ever. It was one of those shows – certainly the year’s best, certainly among the best ever at the Sprint Center and probably among anyone’s shows of a lifetime. Expectations were high coming in; he exceeded them.”–KANSAS CITY STAR

“It’s hard to think of much in the pop music world more impressive than a 67-year-old musician  holding forth for nearly three hours, outdoors on a chilly March night, while delivering some three dozen songs, the least of which would be a career highlight for almost any other artist.”–THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

“McCartney is more like Superman. Watching him perform 40 vocally demanding songs over nearly three hours Saturday night… one could only wonder: How does he do it?”–MIAMI HERALD

“If a reanimated Abraham Lincoln came to town to redeliver the Gettysburg Address (in its entirety) in the flesh, it wouldn’t have trumped this show… From musicality to sheer spectacle to momentous, life-affirming jubilation, Paul McCartney’s Nashville debut at Bridgestone Arena Monday night was an all-out master class in rock ‘n’ roll showmanship… The band was flawless. The arrangements were elegant. The pacing was perfect. The production was dazzling, but never distracting. And most importantly, Sir Paul’s charisma and infectious good nature humanized him, making us feel like we’d made a new friend, while also getting the privilege of an evening in the titanic presence of a true rock god. A master.”–NASHVILLE SCENE

“You hear about all these things, but until you actually sit just a few yards away and witness McCartney in action for close to three hours, it’s impossible to understand how they all conspire to make Sir Paul such an absolute whirlwind… What was really amazing was taking in the full scope of songs that have come out of this man… It was hard to believe that pop music was ever so good, that life was so good.”–SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

As on his Live 2009 tour and Up and Coming’s 2010 run and every Paul McCartney tour since 2002, Paul will be backed by the combo the LAS VEGAS SUN called “his best band since, well, the Beatles”: Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica, backing vocals), Rusty Anderson (guitar, backing vocals), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums, backing vocals) and Brian Ray (guitar, bass, backing vocals).

In addition to overwhelming levels of critical acclaim wherever McCartney has recently played across North America, South America and the UK, last year saw many career firsts for Paul. These included rocking The White House in front of President Barack Obama and his family in June when Paul was made the first ever British recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize For Popular Song.  Paul returned to the White House in December (where even the President joked about Paul becoming a regular there) to be awarded with a Kennedy Center Honor. Paul ended 2010 with a December 11 visit to Saturday Night Live in New York City followed by a career landmark first ever performance at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater on December 13 and three intimate homecoming shows in the UK.  He played the smallest club show of his career at London’s legendary 100 Club to just 300 people, which made headlines as far as China.  The final two shows were at the Hammersmith Apollo and at Liverpool’s O2 Academy, both of which broke venue box office records.

McCartney kicked off his 2011 live agenda last month with his  first ever show in Peru, his first Chilean gig since 1993, and two blockbuster shows at Rio de Janeiro’s Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange, which also resulted in the first ever concert to be broadcast live on the internet throughout Latin America–allowing over 1.5 million fans who were unable to snap up one of the 100,000 tickets to share in the magic.
