EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY UNVEIL SPECIAL VISUAL COLLABORATION PROJECT SCENES FROM THE WILDERNESS

ON VIEW NOW AT TheWilderness.space

NEW ALBUM THE WILDERNESS AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE TODAY

NEW YORK, CHICAGO AND BOSTON SHOWS ANNOUNCED

061_32

On what is proving to be a whirlwind release day, Explosions in the Sky ardently unveil a surprise aural and visual art collaboration, Scenes from the Wilderness. Coinciding with the release of their first non-soundtrack album in five years, The Wilderness (Temporary Residence Ltd), Scenes from the Wilderness serves as both a visual companion to the record and a stand alone art project.

The band collaborated with multimedia designers CHIPS to add movement to nine still photographs taken by EITS guitarist Munaf Rayani. Rayani has served as  band documentarian for the past 16 years, and the photos he chose for this project represent snapshots from their relentless worldwide touring over that time period.

The result is a characteristically nuanced, and moving, emotional experience.

Adam Squires of CHIPS on working with Explosions in the Sky on this extraordinary project:

“We’ve been fans of EITS for years, so we were thrilled to work with them…the band gave us a folder of striking and mysterious photos from their worldwide excursions—cryptic travelogue. We chose one to go with each track, and worked with Eric Overton, an amazing animator and visual effects artist, to slowly alter and degrade it, turning it into a sort of moving painting.”

Scenes from the Wilderness is on view now at TheWilderness.space

In anticipation of today’s worldwide release of the band’s sixth album, critics are already breathlessly heralding The Wilderness as:

“stunning…a quietly masterful, emotionally rich work”—PITCHFORK

“not only a resounding success for EiTS, it’s a demonstration of just how musically agile these guys are…still fully capable of conjuring wonder and amazement.”—CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“the most significant sonic transformation of their career”—POPMATTERS

Having just opened with the “riveting, triumphant” (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN) performances at Austin’s Paramount Theater and already sold out venues in Los Angeles, Oakland, Philadelphia, Denver and Washington DC, The Wilderness tour has now added two shows in New York, as well as stops in Chicago and Boston. Don’t miss what the Austin Chronicle has professed as “This wasn’t just a gig. This was an arrival 16 years coming. This was Pink Floyd just before Live at Pompeii. This was the moment when EITS went from being Texas’ kings of post-rock to scene emperors.”

Fans had better move fast on grabbing their tickets to these legendary performances before they’re all gone:

“a steadily shifting palette of sounds: a delicately played bass-and-guitar intro, a curtain of feedback that comes through in a magisterial drift, tribal locomotion, cherubic harps. It’s a welcome new look for the band”—FLOOD

“dynamic… epic”—ROLLING STONE

Another indication of the impending scope and grandeur of Explosions In The Sky’s The Wilderness (outApril 1 on Temporary Residence Ltd) was revealed yesterday when Zane Lowe premiered album track “Logic of a Dream” on his Beats 1 show.

Now available to download, stream or watch with hypnotic visual accompaniment at http://smarturl.it/LogicYT, “Logic of a Dream” expands on the promise of galvanic first single “Disintegration Anxiety” with another of the most ambitious Explosions In The Sky compositions to date: Plaintive opening strains of gently drizzling guitars are punctuated by power chords and overtaken by cascades of tribal rhythmic patterns before cohering into a taut yet gentle Motorik resolution—movingRolling Stone to call the song “dynamic” and “epic,” while Flood has hailed the song’s bold arrangement as “a welcome new look for the band.”

The Wilderness is out April 1st, but be sure to grab your pre-order here. See below for all announced shows, and stay tuned for more updates.

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY UNVEILS VIDEO DOCUMENTING JACOB VAN LOON CREATING THE WILDERNESS ARTWORK

PREMIERE NOW LIVE VIA THE CREATORS PROJECT

ADDITIONAL SHOWS CONFIRMED IN AUSTIN & WASHINGTON DC DUE TO EXTREMELY HIGH DEMAND

THE WILDERNESS OUT APRIL 1 ON TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD

Explosions In The Sky © Nick Simonite LO RES
Explosions In The Sky © Nick Simonite

In anticipation of Explosions In The Sky’s The Wilderness (out April 1 on Temporary Residence Ltd), the band has teamed up with The Creators Project to proudly premiere a stunning and alluring video capturing renowned artist Jacob van Loon and his process of creating the album artwork. Featuring an exclusive score based on The Wilderness track “The Ecstatics,” the short film vibrantly showcases gently brush-stroked watercolor and painstakingly detailed layers of color through time-lapse. The movie was directed by Jeremy Bird and Jeremy deVine (founder of the band’s longtime label Temporary Residence Ltd), and filmed by Jacob van Loon.

Explosions In The Sky’s guitarist Mark T. Smith spoke about working with van Loon:

“When we were looking for artwork for our record, we became immediately enthralled with Jacob van Loon’s stuff. His existing artwork had all those elements we wanted from the concept of the record: a terror, a beauty, a structure, an abstraction, a wildness… but his resulting artwork was largely a surprise to us. It came as a finished piece and we were blown away.”

Fans can catch the premiere now by heading over to The Creators Project or the band’s Vimeo.

In other news, the band is preparing to kick off what is already proving to be a hot-ticket tour—its presales alone having crashed servers. Having sold out a slew of dates (Austin, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Brussels) and at the behest of extremely popular demand, additional shows have been tacked on for Austin (which now includes a matinee performance), DC and Brussels. See below for all announced dates and be sure to grab your tickets before they disappear as well!

unnamed
Following on the recent announcement of an April 2016 UK/Ireland tour including a headline show at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY has confirmed an April 1 worldwide release for its new album The Wilderness (Temporary Residence Ltd.).

The Wilderness is the band’s sixth album, and first non-soundtrack effort since 2011’s Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. Arguably the most progressive instrumental rock album since EITS’ 2003 breakthroughThe Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, The Wilderness is a bold, experimental work combining the singular song craft that has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and tickets with the cinematic sensibility that has elevated the band to the level of regard and demand its members enjoy as film composers (Lone Survivor, Manglehorn, Prince Avalanche, Friday Night Lights).

The first Explosions In The Sky album not produced entirely by the band, The Wilderness features long time collaborator (and Grammy-winning producer) John Congleton in a co-producer role for the first time. The band’s most ambitious songs to date branch into unexpected new dimensions accordingly–Exhibit A being “Disintegration Anxiety,” currently streaming on all platforms—with visual accompaniment where applicable—and available as an instant grat download with all pre-orders. With its cacophonous opening washes that ultimately resolve into a locked groove, “Disintegration Anxiety” marks the rock solid midpoint of an aggressively modern and forward-thinking work—yet one that wouldn’t seem the slightest bit out of place on a shelf between original pressings of Meddle andObscured By Clouds.

Explosions In The Sky is: Chris Hrasky (drums), Michael James (guitar, bass), Munaf Rayani (guitar), Mark T. Smith (guitar). The track listing for The Wilderness is as follows:

1. Wilderness
2. The Ecstatics
3. Tangle Formations
4. Logic of a Dream
5. Disintegration Anxiety
6. Losing the Light
7. Infinite Orbit
8. Colors in Space
9. Landing Cliffs

Jeremy deVine, founder of the band’s longtime label Temporary Residence Ltd., documented the painting of Esteban Rey’s signature artwork. The film documents the 3-day painting process from color mixing to final brush strokes, and features the painters wearing the same iconic overalls and hard hats worn by Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch in the film (and listening to the same vintage boom box). The video is scored by soundtrack’s closing song, the standout “Send Off”.

UPCOMING SHOWS ANNOUNCED IN NEW ENGLAND

Explosions In The Sky and David Wingo, the creative forces behind Prince Avalanche: An Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, have premiered a gorgeous teaser trailer featuring a track from their collaborative score of the film Prince Avalanche on RollingStone.com

Filmed and edited by Steve Pedulla, the clip features the song “Wading”–one of 15 original compositions from the soundtrack. The video’s stark yet serene minimalism perfectly compliments Wingo and the band’s bewitchingly ambient aesthetic. It incorporates the shoot location of Prince Avalanche, the barren aftermath of the devastating 2011 Bastrop, TX wildfires, making an excellent visual precursor to the collection of 15 original compositions inspired by the film. See below for complete track listing:

1. Fires
2. Theme From Prince Avalanche
3. Dear Madison
4. Passing Time
5. Rain
6. Alone Time
7. Hello, Is This Your House?
8. Can’t We Just Listen To The Silence
9. Wading
10. Dear Alvin
11. The Lines On The Road That Lead You Back Home
12. An Old Peasant Like Me
13. Join Me On My Avalanche
14. The Adventures Of Alvin and Lance
15. Send Off

Explosions In The Sky is currently taking its live show–described by The New Yorker as ”one of the most ecstatic displays of loud rock I’ve ever seen”–on a limited run of summer dates in Brazil, Portugal, Canada and the US– including four additional shows just announced for New England. The band will be supporting Nine Inch Nails for much of the tour, see below for all announced dates. The touring kicks off with an August 3 appearance at the Osheaga Festival in Montreal, just days before the release of Prince Avalanche.

The soundtrack will be released August 6th (on Temporary Residence Ltd.), a few days before the film’s release (theatrical, iTunes and On Demand) on August 9th. You can pre-order through iTunes, or for a physical copy (CD & LP) go to http://shop.temporaryresidence.com/trr222

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY & DAVID WINGO: PRINCE AVALANCHE ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

OUT AUGUST 6 ON TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD

PRINCE AVALANCHE IN THEATERS, AVAILABLE VIA iTUNES, ONDEMAND EVERYWHERE AUGUST 9

Hailed by everyone from The New Yorker and Rolling Stone to Judd Apatow to their hundreds of thousands of fans for the cinematic scale and sweep of its instrumental epics, Explosions In The Sky & David Wingo release their original score to the feature film Prince Avalanche August 6 on Temporary Residence Ltd.

Explosions In The Sky first came into contact with Prince Avalanche writer-director and fellow Texan David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Snow Angels) approached them a decade ago for permission to use a song for his sophomore film All The Real Girls. The result was both Explosions In The Sky’s first-ever film license and the ideal complement to the film’s elegiac score by Texas compose David Wingo.

Many years later, Explosions In The Sky & David Wingo’s collaborative Prince Avalanche is as enthralling as it is intimate. Recorded entirely at the homes of its composers, Prince Avalanche, the record, is the perfect aural accompaniment to the darkly comic, sparely staged yet emotionally complex Beckett-ian tale featuring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as two workers on an isolated stretch of Texas road–shot against the backdrop of Texas’ scorched Bastrop State Park, a location suggested to Green by Explosions In The Sky’s Chris Hrasky.

Hrasky, Michael James, Munaf Rayani, Mark Smith a/k/a Explosions In The Sky are no strangers to the crossroads of music and cinema. Figuratively and literally: Shortly after first crossing the 100,000+ sales mark with its 2003 album The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, the band would wind up scoring the 2004 Universal feature Friday Night Lights, and naturally continued the relationship, lending its music to the much loved TV series spun off from the movie. Since then, Explosions In The Sky’s music has been featured in the likes of Academy Award nominee The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, while the band commissioned three short films scored by tracks from its 2011 album Take Care, Take Care, Take Care: the vintage Polaroid love letter to a lost era “Postcard From 1952,” the touching romantic monster fable “Be Comfortable, Creature” and the animated sci-fi fantasy trip “Last Known Surroundings.”

Explosions In The Sky will soon be taking its live show–described by The New Yorker as “one of the most ecstatic displays of loud rock I’ve ever seen”–on a limited run of summer dates in Brazil, Portugal and Canada. The shows conclude with an August 3 appearance at the Osheaga Festival in Montreal, just days before the August 9 release of Prince Avalanche.
