EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY UNVEILS VIDEO DOCUMENTING JACOB VAN LOON CREATING THE WILDERNESS ARTWORK

PREMIERE NOW LIVE VIA THE CREATORS PROJECT

ADDITIONAL SHOWS CONFIRMED IN AUSTIN & WASHINGTON DC DUE TO EXTREMELY HIGH DEMAND

THE WILDERNESS OUT APRIL 1 ON TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD

In anticipation of Explosions In The Sky’s The Wilderness (out April 1 on Temporary Residence Ltd), the band has teamed up with The Creators Project to proudly premiere a stunning and alluring video capturing renowned artist Jacob van Loon and his process of creating the album artwork. Featuring an exclusive score based on The Wilderness track “The Ecstatics,” the short film vibrantly showcases gently brush-stroked watercolor and painstakingly detailed layers of color through time-lapse. The movie was directed by Jeremy Bird and Jeremy deVine (founder of the band’s longtime label Temporary Residence Ltd), and filmed by Jacob van Loon.

Explosions In The Sky’s guitarist Mark T. Smith spoke about working with van Loon:

“When we were looking for artwork for our record, we became immediately enthralled with Jacob van Loon’s stuff. His existing artwork had all those elements we wanted from the concept of the record: a terror, a beauty, a structure, an abstraction, a wildness… but his resulting artwork was largely a surprise to us. It came as a finished piece and we were blown away.”

Fans can catch the premiere now by heading over to The Creators Project or the band’s Vimeo.

In other news, the band is preparing to kick off what is already proving to be a hot-ticket tour—its presales alone having crashed servers. Having sold out a slew of dates (Austin, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Brussels) and at the behest of extremely popular demand, additional shows have been tacked on for Austin (which now includes a matinee performance), DC and Brussels. See below for all announced dates and be sure to grab your tickets before they disappear as well!

PAUL McCARTNEY IN LANDMARK COLLABORATION WITH SKYPE

Paul composes first ever audio Mojis in partnership with Skype for Valentines Day

New partnership harnesses the universal language of music to share content in a new and original way

Love Moji’s – music by Paul McCartney – available now on Skype

Today, a collaboration has been announced between the world’s most celebrated living musician and its foremost video chat and online communication platform: Paul McCartney and Skype have partnered to launch a new range of animated love themed Moji’s for Valentine’s Day featuring exclusive new McCartney music coupled with Skype’s animated designs. This new set contains ten specially created Moji’s.

Paul McCartney’s career is unparalleled. His music has reached hundreds of millions of people globally, spanning generations. Be it through live performances, composing pop songs, classical works, electronic music, film themes and scores, and most recently composing for the most anticipated video game of the last decade – Destiny, Paul has continued to explore new ways to reach people. Paul’s music brings people together and breaks down language and cultural barriers.

Mojis are short animated clips that you can use during Skype chats when words just aren’t enough. These Moji’s will be completely unique to hundreds of millions of Skype users and feature sound as well as video, giving the users chat a whole new dimension. This collaboration will allow Skype users to use this medium to convey love through music in a new and original way.

Skype has long since been used by people all over the world to communicate and share personal moments. Like music, Skype can be used anywhere in the world to share the love, regardless of the user’s location. Visual emoticons have become increasingly more popular in recent years and have been used to communicate everyday emotions. Today’s announcement marks the launch of a new kind of digital expression – the audio emoticon. Music has always had the power to express a range of different feelings and sharing an audio emoticon is a fun way of expressing feelings via brand new Paul McCartney music.

Paul was sent a brief by Skype to compose for specific emotions. More used to writing chart-topping songs around the three-minute mark than expressing an emotion musically in a number of seconds Paul embraced the task.

Talking about the experience Paul said: “It turned out to be a great laugh at the same time as challenging because you suddenly realise you’ve got to compress a musical interpretation of an expression into less than five seconds. It was like doing a huge crossword puzzle and coming up with all these solutions.  And at the same time it was musical so it was great practise for me in the studio.”

Paul recorded his compositions over a week at his Hog Hill Mill studio in Sussex. Using a variety of instruments including guitars, keyboards, drums, xylophone and his voice. In order to give the whole set a signature sound Paul started the compositions on a Moog synthesizer, Paul explained: “I wanted it to sound sort of electronic so I wanted the signature to sound electronic rather than acoustic guitar, for instance. So I got the overall signature on the Moog in order to give it a modern flavor.”

Speaking about the collaboration Gurdeen Pall, Corporate Vice President at Skype said: “As one of the most iconic artists of all time, Paul McCartney is known for expressing his passion through music. When it comes to composing love songs there is no other artist in the world who has a better track record. Paul’s music has touched the hearts of millions of people all over the world. We are thrilled to lend some of his magic to a set of Mojis conveying the world’s most powerful emotion, love, through music and art. It was a great creative challenge for us to create the animations to match his legendary sound.”

The Moji’s are available on Skype now.

Director’s Notes on “The Wheel”

Polly and I wanted to initiate a project together working in places we thought interesting and relevant. We met through her seeing my photographs from Afghanistan, and I later showed her more work, including some from the war in Kosovo in the late 1990s. I had experience and contacts in both places and Polly had long held a fascination for Afghanistan and was caught up following the events in Kosovo when it was topical. Both had troubled histories and because of the news were familiar in name to everybody; the detail and nuance was maybe lacking or forgotten. I had returned to Kosovo in 2004 when the conflict erupted again, finding unresolved disputes and a deep frustration on every side with the pace and handling of events.

An invitation came to both of us early in the summer of 2011. We were asked to attend a screening of the complete 12 Short Films I had made for the Let England Shake album, and to be part of a Q and A afterwards at the Dokufest in Prizren, southern Kosovo. Not something Polly would normally do, yet there was something inevitable about it all and it would get the project started. So we went.

The song “The Wheel” has the journey to Kosovo at its centre. Who is to say what else has influenced and informed its creation? The sight of a revolving fairground wheel in Fushe Kosove/Kosovo Polje near the capital Pristina is the concrete reference point for the title. I can tell you its date – 4th August 2011- from the piece of footage I made as we walked up the street to our parked car near the train station. It was a passing observation of a commonplace image, one of many that day. While Polly took notes I might have been more interested in something else happening across the street and not bothered to shoot or even have seen it. That day we were gathering material in a blind, optimistic endeavour; characteristic of the way we tend to work together. We had no idea if any of it would ever be seen, heard or would make sense.

Was that sight alone the inspiration for the song? Without being told the stories of people who had suffered during the war, without visiting villages abandoned through ethnic cleansing and cycles of vengeance, without experiencing the different perceptions of people with shared histories, could the song have been written?

I made a return trip to Kosovo in December 2015, armed this time with the knowledge of how the project had developed. In addition to Kosovo, there had been journeys to Afghanistan and Washington D.C. A book, The Hollow of the Hand, had been published of Polly’s poems and my photographs and a words/images/music launch on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall over two nights. A recording session turned art installation in Somerset House which I filmed. The album was mastered and on its way. Disparate elements finally coming together of a project that started with the premise of curiosity and interest.

Making the film for “The Wheel” involved a mix of footage from the first trip in 2011, rehearsals I shot of Polly in London and the most recent trip to Kosovo. The enormous refugee crisis in Europe had been news for months. I spent some time on the Greek and Macedonian borders, and in Serbia, before travelling into Kosovo. It was happening in and through territories associated with recent conflicts in Kosovo and the wider Balkans. The idea of cycles, wheels and repetition once again being all too apparent and necessary to make.

We salute the life of Nesim Kryeziu (1938 – 2016) the wonderful man in the film performing a traditional dance with a glass of water on his head at a wedding in his village of Brezne in the Opoja region of Kosovo.

LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT WEB EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE HERE

Album Art LO RES

“Post Pop Depression… picks up where Lust for Life left off… The lyrics reflect on memories, hint at characters and offer advice and confessions; they can be hard-nosed, remorseful, flippant, combative or philosophical.”—THE NEW YORK TIMES

“A slice of stratospheric punk-funk”—ROLLING STONE

“‘Gardenia’ has the same sort of mean, skeletal, machinelike groove that so many of those great old Iggy songs had… over this sort of spartan groove, he sounds awesome.”—STEREOGUM

“Iggy in finer form than ever and Homme’s distinctive driving guitar melodies firmly anchoring his florid vocals. Basically: it’s shit hot stuff and this album cannot come soon enough”—NOISEY

“Pop gave the song a relatively restrained and poignant performance. The single, from his wonderfully titled new album Post Pop Depression,’ continues the bleak, grooving moods from his great David Bowie collaborations, and it’s perhaps his catchiest new tune in a generation.”—THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

“Glorious… ’Gardenia’ itself feels like a callback to the glory days of new wave, with Iggy’s trademark low voice channeling the spirit of his dearly departed friend David Bowie. Homme provides backing vocals and typically excellent guitar work.”—PASTE

Its existence having been revealed to the world via a one-two punch of an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and exclusive profile in The New York Times, it can now be announced that Iggy Pop’s new album Post Pop Depression (Rekords Rekords/Loma Vista/Caroline International) will be supported by a very limited run of one-time-only live performances in specially selected venues. The Post Pop Depression tour will mark the sole occasion that the album lineup of Iggy, producer/guitarist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader Joshua Homme, Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate and Dead Weather-man Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders—augmented by QOTSA multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen and journeyman guitarist/bassist Matt Sweeney—will perform this material, as well as classics spanning Iggy’s legendary solo career, in a live setting.

Tickets for the North American leg of Iggy’s Post Pop Depression tour will be on sale to the general public January 30, with pre-sales commencing January 28. Tickets for the European leg will be on sale beginning January 29.

In the wake of the Late Show debut and release of first single “Gardenia” and the Post Pop Depression pre-order going live, a second advance track “Break Into Your Heart” has been premiered. Both tracks will be delivered instantly with pre-order from iTunes or on vinyl. Iggy and the band’s web exclusive performance of “Break Into Your Heart” previously witnessed only by the Late Show studio audience has also been unveiled HERE.

Post Pop Depression is equal parts a dream come true for co-creator Homme as it is a record that defiantly takes its place in Iggy’s storied discography alongside the twin towers of The Idiot and Lust For Life–two records and the mythic Berlin era of their creation canonized as much lyrically (“German Days”) as sonically (“Sunday“) on this new record. The album is a singular work that bears its creators’ undeniable sonic DNA while sounding like nothing they’ve done before. It’s a record that wouldn’t exist without either Pop or Homme–and one that probably shouldn’t in theory if you really think about it–but it does, and we and rock ‘n’ roll are all the better for it.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL PLAY IT FORWARD CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

CHELSEA WOLFE, LIAM LYNCH, MATT CAMERON, NADA SURF & MORE RELEASE SECOND WAVE OF COVERS OF EODM’S “I LOVE YOU ALL THE TIME” AVAILABLE TODAY

PLAY IT FORWARD
Eagles Of Death Metal has announced the release of the second wave of the Play It Forward EODM Campaign that debuted December 18, 2015 with an amazing assortment of covers of “I Love You All The Time” from the band’s current album Zipper Down. For every cover sold, the band pledges to donate 100% of its publishing income to The Sweet Stuff Foundation, the non-profit organization founded in 2013 by EODM co-founder Joshua Homme to provide assistance to musicians and their families in times of need, as well as musical education and gear for the next generation. Participating artists were also asked to donate the money generated from sales of the song to the charity.

The Play It Forward EODM Campaign was first inspired by none other than Duran Duran who reached out with an immediate and sincere act of musical solidarity in the aftermath of the November 13, 2015 attacks in Paris that took so many lives at Eagles Of Death Metal’s show that night at Le Bataclan: Spurred by a fan-led campaign to push Eagles Of Death Metal’s cover of Duran Duran’s classic “Save A Prayer” to #1 in the UK, Simon LeBon tweeted that the new romantic icons would donate their share of royalties from the track to charity.

In the weeks that followed, Eagles Of Death Metal asked artists the world over to cover “I Love You All The Time,” pledging to donate 100% of its publishing income to The Sweet Stuff Foundation. With invaluable support from TuneCore, the first wave of “I Love You All The Time” renditions were made available, with contributions from artists as diverse as Florence + The Machine (featuring The Maccabees), Kings Of Leon, Savages, My Morning Jacket, Imagine Dragons, Jimmy Eat World, the Dean Ween Group and more.

Now on January 22, 2016, the second wave of the The Play It Forward EODM Campaign has been released, with versions from (in alphabetical order):

THE BEACHES
THE BETA MACHINE
[BRACKETS]
BUFFALO BROTHERS
MATT CAMERON
IAN CLEMENT
PETRA HADEN
HALESTORM (LIVE VERSION)
KEITH KENNY
LIAM LYNCH
NADA SURF
THE PEOPLE BETWEEN
SONNY BOY THORN
THE WHIGS (LIVE VERSION)
CHELSEA WOLFE
YARD OF BLONDES

The second round of covers are available now. Yet more additional versions are forthcoming and will be announced as they are confirmed. Those wishing to donate should go to http://playitforwardeodm.com/ for information on how to do so.

With cooperation from Fondation de France: www.fondationdefrance.org and FENVAC: www.fenvac.org, Play It Forward EODM Campaign donations to Sweet Stuff will aid the surviving family members of those killed in the November 13 Paris attacks—as well as the family of slain EODM crew member Nick Alexander. For more information on The Sweet Stuff Foundation, go to www.thesweetstufffoundation.org.

Eagles Of Death Metal will return to Europe for the first time since its triumphant appearance during U2’s encore December 7, 2015 in Paris. The first run of rescheduled dates—now christened The Nos Amis Tour—will include a February 16th show at the Olympia in Paris. “The people of Paris have always been incredible to us, and our feeling of love towards this beautiful city and its people has been reinforced a million times over this past month,” commented EODM co-founder and frontman Jesse Hughes. “Hearing the stories of the survivors, the injured and those who have lost loved ones has been overwhelming. Not returning to finish our set was never an option. We look forward to coming back in February and continuing our mission to bring rock ‘n’ roll to the world.”

POST POP DEPRESSION OUT MARCH 18 ON REKORDS REKORDS/LOMA VISTA/CAROLINE INTERNATIONAL

PRODUCED BY JOSHUA HOMME

GARDENIA” SINGLE OUT NOW, AVAILABLE INSTANTLY WITH ALL PREORDERS

unnamed (7)

“A lot of geezers my age don’t work out of their comfort zone anymore because once you become legendary you don’t want people challenging you.”–Iggy Pop

The existence of the sublimely secretive desert opus conceived by Iggy Pop and Joshua Homme was confirmed yesterday to an unsuspecting studio and home audience of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

And now the world at large can know: March 18 will see the release of Post Pop Depression (Rekords Rekords/Loma Vista/Caroline International), the 17th Iggy Pop album, and a worthy addition to the 22 album legacy spawned with the immortal trilogy of The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power, spanning massively influential solo outings including 1977’s opening 1-2 combo of The Idiot and Lust For Life, and 1990’s gold-certified Brick By Brick.

The first Iggy Pop album co-created with producer/guitarist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader Homme, Post Pop Depression began with a succinctly worded text from Iggy to Joshua, and was realized in seclusion with Homme’s enlisted aid of his Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate and Dead Weather-man Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. Both became instantly integral in creating and shaping the Detroit meets Palm Desert by way of old Berlin vibe of Post Pop Depression: Interweaving with and augmenting even more superhuman than expected Iggy vocal performances and Homme’s tapestry of guitar, bass, piano and backing vox, Fertita’s talent for wringing the most out of only the most essential notes worked in seamless tandem with Helders’ pushing himself and his new bandmates to unforeseeable heights and depths.

The result would be a timeless work, one that sounds as if it’s always been there, has existed before any of the musicians were even born-yet imbued with the ramshackle energy of a garage band that threw itself together yesterday.

Post Pop Depression is now available for pre-order via iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and the Iggy Pop webstore, with all pre-orders immediately receiving “Gardenia,” debuted by Iggy, Joshua and crew on the Late Show. “Gardenia” is also available on all streaming platforms.

“I wanted to be free,” recalls Iggy of the earliest germ of the partnership with Homme that culminated inPost Pop Depression. “To be free, I needed to forget. To forget, I needed music. Josh had that in him, so I set out to provoke an encounter-first with a carefully worded text, followed by a deluge of writings all about me. No composer wants to write about nothing. He got revved up and we had a great big rumble in the desert USA.”

“This was to go where neither of us had gone before,” adds Homme. “That was the agreement. And to go all the way.”

Post Pop Depression is equal parts a dream come true for co-creator Homme as it is a record that defiantly takes its place in Iggy’s storied discography alongside the twin towers of The Idiot and Lust For Life-two records and the mythic Berlin era of their creation canonized as much lyrically (“German Days”) as sonically (“Sunday“) on this new record. The album will be supported by a tour realizing Homme’s ambition to assemble a live outfit worthy of both bringing the new album and doing justice to the gems and wreckage of the Ig’s sprawling solo catalogue: The core band that recorded the album will be expanded by QOTSA’s Troy Van Leeuwen and journeyman guitarist Matt Sweeney.

Post Pop Depression is a singular work that stands proudly alongside the best works of either of its principles, from The Stooges to Queens Of The Stone Age, bearing its creators’ undeniable sonic DNA while sounding like nothing they’ve done before. It’s a record that wouldn’t exist without either Pop or Homme-and one that probably shouldn’t in theory if you really think about it-but it does, and we and rock ‘n’ roll are all the better for it.

Lead single “The Wheel” received its first play today on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show

This spring sees the release of PJ Harvey’s ninth studio album,
The Hope Six Demolition Project, on April 15th through Vagrant Records

The Hope Six Demolition Project draws from several journeys undertaken by Harvey, who spent time in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, D.C. over a four-year period. “When I’m writing a song I visualise the entire scene. I can see the colours, I can tell the time of day, I can sense the mood, I can see the light changing, the shadows moving, everything in that picture. Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with,” says Harvey.

The album was recorded last year in residency at London’s Somerset House. The exhibition, entitled ‘Recording in Progress’ saw Harvey, her band, producers Flood and John Parish, and engineers working within a purpose-built recording studio behind one-way glass, observed throughout by public audiences.
