Hailed as “Beach Boys-tinged doo-wop folk that will make you want to murder an afternoon drinking IPAs in a seaside hammock” by ROLLING STONE, Band of Horses fifth studio album, Why Are You OK (Interscope) has earned the #9 position on the Billboard 200 chart, selling nearly 20,000 copies in the week since its June 10 release. This marks the band’s highest debut position since the much beloved Infinite Arms  bowed at #7 in 2010.

Critical response to Why Are You OK has been equally euphoric:

“Ben Bridwell has crafted his best album in nearly a decade”—PITCHFORK

“”Bright, indie-rock gems”—ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“A pacific Pink Floyd… These guys always find a way to make the mythic feel down to earth.”—ROLLING STONE

“Expansive, cinematic rock marinated in melancholy”—ESQUIRE

“Howling into the night, Ben Bridwell and Band of Horses return to their classic sound—and strike gold”—RELIX

“Heartfelt and expansive…ringing, uplifting, country-fried indie rock”–STEREOGUM

“Charmingly massive indie rock hooks… grand moments of simplicity.”—CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“Band of Horses is ready and willing to get ambitious on Why Are You OK, and the album is all the better for it…  the more it attacks expectations, the better it feels.”—FLOOD

Band of Horses recently wound down a multi-city “indie retail tour,” celebrating the release date of Why Are You OK with an intimate set in the basement of Grimey’s in Nashville. This back to the roots run landed the Why Are You OK at the #1 spot of the Department of Record Stores chart. The tour saw Band of Horses playing sublime acoustic sets at some of the country’s premiere independent record stores, starting May 30 at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA, with stops at Amoeba in L.A., Rough Trade in Brooklyn and New Jersey’s Vintage Vinyl. One day after the Grimey’s indie retail tour finale and a short drive away, Band of Horses played a standout main stage set at this year’s Bonnaroo festival, during which “one of our best folk rock bands proved why they’re so special. And it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful way to spend a Saturday than that” (BAEBLE MUSIC) and “the crowd—still reeling from the string of hits that capped off the hour set—drowned out Bridwell’s final words with their screams” (AMERICAN SONGWRITER).

As North America anxiously awaits their August 9th stateside return for a run commencing in Aspen, Colorado, the band can now confirm their line up of support acts for the late summer/early fall tour:

BAND OF HORSES WHY ARE YOU OK RELEASED TODAY

PRODUCED BY BAND OF HORSES AND JASON LYTLE (GRANDADDY), EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY RICK RUBIN

MONTHS-LONG ODYSSEY RECOUNTED FROM FIRST TWEET IN APRIL TO JUNE 10 STREET DATE

Fifth Studio LP Hailed by Entertainment Weekly as One of Summer’s 14 Biggest Albums Presaged By Late Show with Stephen Colbert “Casual (Monster) Party,” Tearjerking Late Late Show with James Corden Appearance, “Whatever, Wherever” Zane Lowe Beats 1 World Premiere and Exclusive SONOS Video, Indie Retail Tour Concluding Tonight at Grimey’s in Nashville, and So Much More…

“Howling into the night, Ben Bridwell and Band of Horses return to their classic sound—and strike gold” — RELIX

“Beautifully moving…the place where wistfulness and euphoria collide” – **** – The Guardian

In the months leading up to today’s release of fifth studio album Why Are You OK (Interscope), Band Of Horses have truly made the most of every precious moment—taking every opportunity to share with press and radio, home audio companies, streaming services, independent record retailers–and most importantly their fans – just how passionate they are about this album which is finally available for all to hear.

A recap of highlights for those who somehow slept on any of the epic run-up to Why Are You OK:

April 25 — Band of Horses superfan @7Adrewg a/k/a “Fuck” was chosen by the band to reveal the existence of Why Are You OK, premiering the  lyric video for first single “Casual Party.” THE NEW YORK OBSERVER immediately called the track “pure indie-rock at its finest…head thrashing and awkward head dancing are encouraged on this one,” while ROLLING STONE hailed the “South Carolina indie rockers return to vintage form” in the same week’s issue.

(Premiere partner @7Adrewg/“Fuck” of course called the song “The greatest experience of my life”.)

May 18 —  The Late Show with Stephen Colbert studio and home audiences witnessed the first ever public performance of “Casual Party.” After Colbert wished Ben’s daughter Annabelle a Happy Birthday, the band launched into a sweet, nostalgic and oh so harmonious rendition of “In A Drawer.” Shortly thereafter, the Ben Fee-directed “Casual Party” video was dropped. Both the video and the Colbert performance co-starred the band and a supporting ensemble of strange and unsettling creatures.

June 3 — Following the world premiere of “Whatever, Wherever” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 program, Band of Horses unveiled the video for the song via a unique collaboration with Sonos: a family-focused campaign based on the tradition of passing musical experiences and memories from one generation to the next. With “Whatever, Wherever,” a song that Ben Bridwell wrote for his daughters, Sonos happened upon an anthem embodying love and music shared through family. The result was a video shot entirely in 16mm film, a modern day home movie—and a sweet ode to the people without whom Band Of Horses would not exist: their families.

June 6 — The Late Late Show With James Corden hosted Band of Horses for flawless renditions of “Whatever, Wherever” and “Solemn Oath” that rendered host and audience alike breathless.

June 7 — The band retweeted this (just because):

June 8 — A spirited performance of “Throw My Mess” aired on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.

June 9 —  Ben Bridwell hosted his very own pop-up radio show on Beats 1, premiering even more new Why Are You OK tunes and featuring interviews with collaborators, friends and influences. The full show can be heard here.

June 10 — The band wraps up its multi-city “indie retail tour,” celebrating the release date of Why Are You OK with an intimate set in the basement of Grimey’s in Nashville. This back to the roots run has seen Band of Horses playing sublime acoustic sets at some of the country’s premiere independent record stores, starting May 30 at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA, with stops at Amoeba in L.A., Rough Trade in Brooklyn and New Jersey’s Vintage Vinyl. In addition to primo BOH live music, each of the appearances has featured posters screened exclusively for each store, superimposing the Why Are You OK cover couple into sites relevant to each locale. Not only were band members on hand to sign the limited edition posters for current and future purchasers of Why Are You OK—Fans purchasing the record at select indie outlets in certain tour markets may receive a “golden ticket” either inside the LP or gifted by a clerk, granting them a free pair of tickets to an upcoming BOH show.

… All of which brings us to today. The album is out. The tour is beginning. And the question remains, WHY ARE YOU OK… Find out now:

Band of Horses have shared a new track and video for “Whatever, Wherever,” allowing viewers a glimpse into the joy and craziness of family life that served as inspiration for the song. Shot entirely on 16mm film, the video is an intimate modern day home movie scored by a heartfelt ode to the people whose love and inspiration can be heard and felt in every note of Band Of Horses’ music.

Sonos has premiered the video via their blog.

Sonos’ involvement in the creation of the video was a happy accident. The company was conceiving a campaign around a family-oriented message, focusing on the tradition of passing musical experiences and memories from one generation to the next. With “Whatever, Wherever,” a song that Ben Bridwell wrote for his daughters, Sonos happened upon an anthem embodying love and music shared through family. Sonos joined Band Of Horses for a daylong BBQ/video shoot at Ben’s home in Charleston, SC.

As Band Of Horses gear up for the June 10 release of Why Are You OK—already hailed as “Heartfelt and expansive…ringing, uplifting, country-fried indie rock” by STEREOGUM and full of “Bright, indie-rock gems” per ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, the band will be stopping by The Late Late Show With James Corden on June 6th to bring “Whatever, Wherever” to life for the first ever live performance of the heartstring-tugging track.

Band Of Horses then hit the road with many, many more tour dates to be announced. Full list of current dates can be found below.

Band Of Horses blew the minds as well as the ears of a dazzled audience at Wednesday’s taping of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert as they were accompanied for a rollicking debut performance of “Casual Party” by a motley complement of difficult to describe monstrosities.

No, Band Of Horses are not going all Muppets on acid on us, they’d merely invited a few of the unnerving but somehow a little cuddly creatures from the video to their instantly infectious “Casual Party” which dropped today. You can watch the Ben Fee-directed cut right HERE.

“The band’s performance of lead single “Casual Party” was accompanied by a unique posse of hype men (/women/things?) that ranged from a human gold pom-pom to a crouching pink alien to what looks like Speed Racer with a major tooth issue. And none of the accompanying weirdos seemed too psyched to be onstage. Casual Party, indeed. We do get a little head bob from Pom Pom Swamp Thing near the end. Oh, the power of indie rock.”–RELIX MAGAZINE

Produced by Jason Lytle, and Executive Produced by Rick Rubin, Why Are You OK will hit stores on June 10 via Interscope Records/American Recordings. The band breathed life into the recordings from the album this week, CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND noted that “They still very much know how to make a small room feel like a cavernous arena.” While STEREOGUM found their performance “Heartfelt and expansive…ringing, uplifting, country-fried indie rock.”

Band Of Horses is set to kick off their North American tour tomorrow evening in Wilmington, Delaware. Watch this space for more album & tour announcements coming soon.

NEW ALBUM OUT IN JUNE ON INTERSCOPE/AMERICAN RECORDINGS

“CASUAL PARTY” OUT NOW – LYRIC VIDEO WORLD PREMIERE COURTESY OF FUCK HERE

BOH Album Cover
In the past, Band of Horses founder and leader Ben Bridwell would literally run away from home to write: Holing up in a secluded cabin or other such remote location, emerging months later with new songs for his band to flesh out and fully animate. This time—whether by happenstance or conscious need for a drastic change—Ben stayed home to write. In the estrogen-charged atmosphere of a home shared with his wife and four—yes, four—daughters he allowed his everyday experiences to inform his process. Between dropping off and picking up the girls, changing diapers, and playing dress up, Bridwell spent every precious free minute—often the wee hours on the morning into daybreak—in his garage writing.

While Bridwell and his bandmates–Tyler Ramsey, Ryan Monroe, Creighton Barrett and Bill Reynolds—convened in South Carolina alongside producer Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Bridwell struggled to bring the new material into focus. One day, at a particularly crucial part of the recording process Ben’s phone rang. It was Rick Rubin—who’d randomly heard a Band of Horses song on the radio during a drive, and had been moved to pull over and call. Without going into details, Bridwell can’t stress the value of this phone call enough. It was exactly the final push that his songs needed on their journey from conception to being sent out into the world.

The result is Band of Horses’ fifth studio album, Why Are You OK, a record informed by experience and at the same time retaining the vulnerability that birthed their greatest songs. Creating capsule worlds populated by the strange but true cast of characters from Bridwell’s hometown Charleston, SC, Why Are You OK‘s songs combined universal sentiments with Bridwell’s patented knack for storytelling—all wrapped in the lush melodic textures that have long been the bedrock of Band of Horses’ signature sound.

Why Are You OK is set for release in June via Interscope Records/American Recordings. The album was produced by Jason Lytle, Executive Produced by Rick Rubin and mixed by Dave Fridmann.

Why Are You OK tracklist:

Last night, the band asked their favorite Twitter follower, Fuck (@7Adrewg), to premiere the Korean karaoke style lyric video for the first single “Casual Party”. You can now view it HERE. Mr. Fuck had caught the band’s attention not only by his surname, but also because he’d been tweeting compliments at the band upon the unveiling of the new album art. After further investigation, it was discovered that he was indeed a longtime fan, and the band felt he deserved the first look and listen.

The band will be touring throughout the summer and fall. More dates to be announced as the band embarks on a world tour which will see them hitting stages across the globe through 2017. See below for the current schedule.

IRON & WINE AND BEN BRIDWELL

SING INTO MY MOUTH
COVERS ALBUM OUT THIS SUMMER ON BLACK CRICKET/BROWN RECORDS

Confirmed For Newport Folk Festival—Additional Summer Tour Dates To Be Announced

Longtime friends Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses and Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam take great pride in announcing the completion of their first ever collaborative album, Sing Into My Mouth.

Scheduled for a joint release this summer (exact date TBD) on Beam’s Black Cricket and Bridwell’s Brown Records via Caroline, Sing Into My Mouth is a loving homage to 12 songs that have had indelible influence on both of its creators. Classics interpreted on Sing Into My Mouth range from the familiar—Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” Sade’s “Bulletproof Soul” and El Perro del Mar’s “God Knows (You Gotta Give to Get)” (the original having recently been featured on HBO’s GIRLS)—to deep cuts such as Them Two’s “Am I a Good Man?” (a frequent feature of Band of Horses’ live set) and “There’s No Way Out of Here” originally recorded by ‘70s UK act Unicorn but better known as the lead single from David Gilmour of Pink Floyd’s 1978 solo debut.

“As excited as I was at the prospect of finally working together, I was unsure of the possibility of us both finding the time,” says Bridwell. “Luckily for me, Sam was persistent with the idea of recording some of our favorite tunes that we’d always wanted to cover. This is truly a ‘full circle’ moment for me… I’ve always wanted us to sing together and finally I have that dream realized. I couldn’t be more excited to continue this project at the upcoming shows to take it even further while playing some of our original songs together.”

“Ben and I started our careers together and had been threatening to work with one another for years,”Beam adds. “When we finally conceived of the covers project and carved out some time, it was nostalgic and fun from top to bottom–the process of picking the songs to cover was really reminiscent of more than 15 years ago when we used to mail each other cassettes and CDs of music we were into–and the end of every recording day found us cutting up with friends the way we used to when we’d cross paths in South Carolina. He’s always been one of the funniest people I know.”

Sing Into My Mouth was recorded last summer at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC. The complete track list along with the artists whose performances of these songs inspired Ben and Sam are detailed below.

Bridwell and Beam are confirmed to appear together at the Newport Folk festival July 24, at the MoPop Festival in Detroit on July 25, and Osheaga in Montreal July 31. Further live dates will be announced as they are confirmed.

“This setting offered Bridwell a chance to show off his genuine vocal abilities… Bridwell shares this skill with his bandmates, who surprised us with big, round, multi-part harmonies… brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash.”–NASHVILLE SCENE

Men with cool girlfriends and wives, rejoice! Band of Horses has just armed you with the perfect Valentine’s Day gift: Acoustic at The Ryman, a 10-song virtual greatest hits set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the Band of Horses catalog, recorded at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013, to be released February 11, 2014 on Brown Records via Kobalt Label Services. In addition to standard digital and CD versions, Acoustic at The Ryman will be available on 180 Gram Vinyl as well as a high quality 24-bit 96k WAV version. Standard digital, CD and vinyl versions will be available for preorder with bonus tracks at bandofhorses.com this week.

Having captured this two-night stand’s worth of singular performances that the NASHVILLE SCENE said “brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash,” Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there. Using the latest hardware from DSD recorder manufacturers Mytek, Band of Horses mixed the record in the band’s hometown haunt of Charleston Sound. As a result, Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman is one of a mere handful of non-Classical/Jazz albums mixed and mastered in the DSD format, capturing the ragged magic of an unforgettable performance in dangerously pristine quality.

“The game plan was to keep it wild and expressive like the show while capturing it with highest resolution available,” says the band’s Bill Reynolds.  “The electricity in The Ryman was off the charts. If that makes it to the listener, then we’ll consider this a success.”

The album’s release will be commemorated by a 13-date run of special acoustic performances, commencing on the its February 11 street date at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and concluding March 5 at–where else?–The Ryman itself.

Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman was mixed down to DSD through Mytek convertors and mastered from DSD to DSD by Bob Ludwig At Gateway using the Mytek 8Z192 ADDA. The recording was transferred from DSD to 180 Gram Vinyl by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab.
