WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT? TOM JONES’ THIRD MAN BLUE SERIES SINGLE, THAT’S WHAT!

Jones’ Take On Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” c/w Frankie Lane’s “Jezebel” (TMR 106) Out March 5th

Duane The Teenage Weirdo Blue Series 7″ (TMR 125) Out January 24th

Vault Package #11 Available For Subscribers Signing Up Before January 31st

http://www.thirdmanrecords.com/

Third Man Records is proud to announce the most virile entry in the history of its Blue Series singles: The man, the legend himself Mr. Tom Jones laying his unmistakable voice over Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” and the Frankie Lane classic “Jezebel” (as covered over the years by the likes of Edith Piaf and Anna Calvi). Both tracks were produced by Jack White at Third Man studios and will be available on 7” and iTunes March 5th.

Right around the corner and straight outta Detroit is a new Blue Series 7” from high flying DIY electro genius and self-described weirdo, Duane The Teenage Weirdo. Pop music in Depression-era 2012 doesn’t come any more legit then in Duane’s capable hands. Both tracks, “Postcard From Hell” and “Bubblegum Encore,” are the sound of Detroit pared down to a hard beat, feral vocals, synth stabs and real dance intent which all makes Duane our second favorite Detroiter to call himself a streetwalking cheetah. The single will be available as a Blue Series 7” and via iTunes January 24th.

And lastly, the latest Third Man Records subscription-only Vault package…  #11:

2012 starts off with the label’s third and FINAL singles compilation, on three LPs pressed in Third Man’s standard three colors of vinyl: black, yellow and white–as well as the third in an annual series of fold-out posters depicting the covers of all the previous years’ TMR singles.

This quarter’s 7” is something literally from the vault: Recorded during the 1999 sessions for their self-titled debut, the White Stripes “Dead Leaves” and “Let’s Build a Home” are versions markedly different from the ones that would eventually be recorded and released on White Blood Cells and De Stijl. This piece is truly one for the fans and getting songs like these into their hands was this main reason the Vault was created.

The wild card item this quarter is a solar-reactive, color-changing Third Man Records logo t-shirt: yes, when exposed to sunlight, the color of the print switches from yellow to white, again reinforcing the THREE color scheme and complementing the triple LP set above. Finally… a reason for record collectors to venture outdoors!

The 3-LP set (TMR 133),  “Dead Leaves”/“Let’s Build a Home” 7″ (TMR 134) and three-color Third Man shirt are available ONLY to Vault subscribers–so sign up now if you want ’em as the cut-off date of January 31st is fast approaching!

Paul McCartney Announces Brand New As Yet Untitled Album

Paul’s Tribute To Personal Favorites & Two New Self Penned Compositions Out February 7th

WHILE many a musician is often asked about the tunes that have influenced their songwriting, it is not a question Paul McCartney ordinarily gets to answer – until now. Paul is about to offer a glimpse into “the songs which inspired the songs” with the upcoming release of a brand new album of those standards he grew up listening to in his childhood—plus two brand new McCartney compositions:  the album, which is currently untitled, will be released on Hear Music/Concord Records on February 7th 2012.

With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band—as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney’s new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years – and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. “In the end it was ‘Look, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it,” he says.

In short, Paul believes it is about time “the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on” received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics.

“When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them,” Paul explains. “I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys – I just thought the songs were magical.  And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it’s beautiful, the way they made those song’.”

Determined to approach the record in a new and unique manner, Paul enlisted the help of LiPuma and Krall and her band—who delivered ultra-high quality musicianship and were completely in tune with Paul’s restraint and feel for the music. In the studio, the recording of this album was also a new challenge for Paul who, for the first time ever, performed exclusively in the vocal booth without no instrument – no guitar, no bass, no piano – which led to a vocal performance like no other in his career.

He adds, “It was very spontaneous, kind of organic, which then reminded me of the way we’d work with The Beatles. We’d bring a song in, kick it around, when we found a way to do it we’d say ‘Okay, let’s do a take now’ and by the time everyone kind of had an idea of what they were doing, we’d learnt the song. So that’s what we did, we did the take live in the studio.”

“It was important for me to keep away from the more obvious song choices so, many of the classic standards will be unfamiliar to some people.  I hope they are in for a pleasant surprise.”

The album was recorded at the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London throughout 2011.  It also features guest musicians Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectively, on the original compositions  ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’.

The track ‘My Valentine’ will be exclusively streamed on www.paulmccartney.com to premium members for 24 hours only, from 1400hrs (GMT) today (Monday 19th December).

Full tracklisting to be announced soon.

FOO FIGHTERS ROCK NEW ZEALAND–LITERALLY

THREE HOURS OF SUSTAINED TREMORS CAUSED BY AUCKLAND CROWD OF 50,000

Anyone who’s witnessed one of Foo Fighters near-three-hour tour dates in support of their worldwide #1, Album of the Year Grammy-nominated Wasting Light knows: They’re the hardest rocking band on the current stadium and arena circuit.

But now there’s geoscientific evidence to prove it: the capacity crowd of 50,000 at the Foos’ December 13 gig at Auckland, New Zealand’s Western Springs Stadium generated actual detectable geological tremors.

New Zealand media reported that nearby monitoring stations in Herne Bay and Eden Park picked up tremors consistent with those generated by a volcanic event–except that the shaking coincided precisely with the Foo Fighters performance, even including “lulls in the signal between the songs and peaks in signal intensity during the songs” according to the GeoNet blog http://geonet-shakennotstirred.blogspot.com/2011/12/rock-n-roll.html

The Western Springs Stadium show was the conclusion of a record-breaking run of Australia/New Zealand stadium shows, as well as the last date of the Wasting Light tour until 2012. Foo Fighters will resume moving the earth with their music at the 2011 Grammy Awards February 12 in Los Angeles.
