SOME IDEALISTIC FUTURE: AN UNPRECEDENTED LOOK AT 10 YEAR HISTORY OF THE POSTAL SERVICE BY THE CREATORS PROJECT

From the initial long distance collaboration between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello that created 2003’s sleeper classic Give Up to the current reunion tour celebrating the platinum album’s 10th anniversary and packing houses from New York’s Barclays Center to the Greek Theatres of Los Angeles and Berkeley… The Postal Service has now had its unique journey examined and chronicled by The Creators Project, a partnership between Intel and VICE. Viewers are given an intimate look at the band and its process: from the dressing room to the digital (re)construction of the music to the moment the band takes the stage.

Directed by Justin Mitchell,  this is a one of a kind look at one of the most beloved acts of the past decade. Mitchell says of the project: “I‘ve been looking for a project to use prisms on for a while and much like the multiple frames, I think they help to support the story of the band. For me the prisms represent a gathering of all the disparate energies that propelled the album upwards and onwards during the last ten years.  The band might be the center of the image and the focus but for ten years they allowed Give Up to live its own life and somehow, all that outside energy resulted in a platinum album.  Now, as Ben says, they get to reclaim it and I think the prism (which just looked so much cooler in slow motion) helps to show that. ” Read the rest of the interview with Justin Mitchell on The Creators Project: http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/capturing-the-postal-service-on-their-reunion-tour

The Postal Service has spent the spring and summer traversing the States playing to sold out arenas, theaters and festival grounds nationwide. The ongoing 10th anniversary tour commemorating the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (Sub Pop) has recently included stops at Coachella, Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, Seattle’s Key Arena and a late night appearance on The Colbert Report. The tour continues with two-night stints at The Greek Theater in both Los Angeles and Berkeley, CA. The band will wrap up the most nostalgic tour of the summer with a set at Lollapolooza and subsequent sold out after show at The Metro in Chicago.

The tour has elicited rave reviews from critics across the country including, but not limited to:

“If last night’s Barclays Center show, part of a tour thrown to celebrate the reissue of Give Up, proved anything, it’s that their fans love them just as much as they ever have…  the band’s arena-sized show managed to sound current despite its sentimental undertones – and relevant even to today’s indie-pop landscape, for that matter… at Barclays’ 18,000-seat venue, the show became about purging (feelings! memories!) en masse. Everyone from the VIP to the far-reaching corners of the stadium sang along to ‘Such Great Heights,’ aligning the starry emotions beaming out from their loving, freckled eyes with the distant glare reflected from Gibbard’s guitar… drowning in the echoes of the thousands of fans singing back to them, I thought about how absolutely laughable the idea of a successor was. No one could ever be the Postal Service except for the Postal Service.”–ROLLING STONE

“The place wasn’t tiny; it was the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the arena was sold out for the first of two shows there. It’s at least an order of magnitude larger perfectly current, and perfectly settled. There was no need to tamper with an accurate prophecy.”–THE NEW YORK TIMES

“The staccato melody lifted into soaring highs…Gibbard directed the crowd into an a cappella repeat of the chorus… Everyone in the building knew each and every word.” – AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“On a night when the Rolling Stones were blasting through a greatest hits showcase at the Garden and the Bruins were battling the Blackhawks in game one of the Stanley Cup finals, this was clearly THE place to be in Boston.” – BOSTON HERALD

“Such a charmed trajectory, almost implausible in today’s fragmented musical environment, is more or less the truth of what happened to Gibbard and collaborator Jimmy Tamborello who released the Postal Service’s one and only album, Give Up, to critical acclaim in 2003. At Barclays, the duo — joined by RIlo Kiley singer Jenny lewis — gave new life to that beloved collection of pensive and ebullient electro-pop songs, triggering a rare nostalgia high for assembled fans… tantalizingly sweet.” – BILLBOARD

“This material is densely packed with ethereal instrumentation, propulsive rhythms and evocative wordplay, a combination that’s built to last…On stage adorned with gorgeous pillars of light, Gibbard, Tamborello, Lewis and Burhenn executed intricate turns between dance-worthy beats and evocative melodies, turning on dime from moodiness to mayhem.” – ORLANDO SENTINEL

“the band delivered on the nostalgia of fans who’ve had but one Postal Service album to obsess over while coming of age (or simply aging). The surprise was just how loud, grand and epic it played in a large venue.” – WILLAMETTE WEEKLY

(Seattle, WA June 18, 2013) The Postal Service has unveiled its new video for “A Tattered Line Of String” today at http://youtu.be/K2xNj630NBU. The arresting and dreamlike clip finds one of two previously unreleased songs from the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (Sub Pop) transformed by Parisian video team AB/CD/CD (Lily Allen, Factory Floor) into a surreal tale of longing and laundry.

The Postal Service has also confirmed that it will finally make its television debut, performing on TV for the first time ever Wednesday, June 19 on The Colbert Report.

The ongoing 10th anniversary tour commemorating the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition recently blew through New York, selling nearly 30,000 tickets over a two-night stand at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center that elicited rave reviews including:

“The place wasn’t tiny; it was the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the arena was sold out for the first of two shows there. It’s at least an order of magnitude larger than the places the Postal Service played when it last toured a decade ago — a sign of the band’s continually spreading influence… these were oldies that sounded perfectly current, and perfectly settled. There was no need to tamper with an accurate prophecy.”–THE NEW YORK TIMES

“I assure you that I’m not using the word ‘miraculous’ lightly. Before last night, the only other time Gibbard and Tamborello had played NYC was over a decade earlier at the 600-capacity Bowery Ballroom. To say that the sold out 18,000-capacity Barclays Center is a step up would be a slight understatement. It was a testament to the power of nostalgia, but also Ben Gibbard’s ability to write a damn good pop song. Looking at the duo on stage, with Jenny Lewis in tow, their astonishment at the situation was also palpable… everyone at Barclays Center shared something intimate and close to the heart. We collectively let each other in on a little secret we’ve kept hidden in car stereos, mixtapes, and iPods for a the last ten years. To be able to do that with 18,000 people simultaneously is something altogether astounding.”–CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

The Postal Service’s  2013 anniversary tour is arguably the single most hotly anticipated reunion of the year, selling out theaters, clubs, amphitheaters and arenas the world over, including the Greek Theatre in Berkeley and New York’s Barclays Center where second dates  were added by popular demand, as well as Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, London, Manchester, Detroit, Atlanta, Boise, Orlando, Columbus, and one of two upcoming Kansas City dates. The tour’s final leg begins July 16 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, BC, and will include stops in Portland, Seattle, Santa Barbara, San Diego, St. Paul, and a pair of two night stands in Los Angeles and Berkeley, CA before concluding August 3 at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

The 10th anniversary dates reunite Postal Service principals Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello with Jenny Lewis, who appeared on the original 2003 album and tour. Lewis also sings on the new “A Tattered Line Of String” and “Turn Around” on the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition. Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds, Bright Eyes) rounds out the current touring lineup.

Give Up was certified platinum last year just shy of 10 years from its original February 9, 2003 release. Led by the single ”Such Great Heights,” the landmark album is, after Nirvana’s Bleach, the second-biggest selling album in Sub Pop’s 25-year history.

“‘Such Great Heights’… inspired the single biggest sing-along of the entire day.”–BILLBOARD

“The idea that music — big, larger than life music — can start in a bedroom and grow into a force that can move a field of 80,000 devout music fans made me want to weep for joy… the world will be singing along with the Postal Service for the summer.”–LOS ANGELES TIMES

“The Postal Service drew what appeared to be the largest crowd of the day to the main stage… Lewis powerfully complemented Tamborello’s skittering beats and synths and Gibbard’s wallflower vocals with angelic yet powerful singing, sinuous guitar playing, and overall charisma; at times, she and Gibbard would dance together like they were in an old Human League video, which proved quite charming.”–ROLLING STONE

In the wake of a rapturous response to an opening week of its 10th anniversary tour including two show-stopping Coachella sets (see above), The Postal Service has confirmed the addition of five new arena and amphitheater dates in Seattle, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Los Angeles.

The newest dates of the tour commemorating the recent release of  the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition on Sub Pop are as follows: July 18 at the Key Arena in Seattle, July 20 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, July 21 at the San Diego State Open Air Theater and July 23 and 24 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale April 27, with the exception of San Diego, which goes on sale April 26.

The Postal Service  2013 anniversary tour is quite possibly the single most hotly anticipated reunion of the year, selling out theaters, clubs, amphitheaters and arenas the world over, including the Greek Theater in Berkeley and New York’s Barclays Center where second dates have been added by popular demand. Other upcoming dates that have completely sold out in advance now include Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, London, Manchester, Detroit, Atlanta, Boise, Orlando, Kansas City, Columbus, and more sure to come.

The 10th anniversary dates reunite Postal Service principals Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello with Jenny Lewis, who appeared on the original 2003 album and tour. Lewis also sings on the two new songs on Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition). Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds, Bright Eyes) rounds out the 2013 touring lineup.

Give Up was certified platinum last year just shy of 10 years from its original February 9, 2003 release. Led by the single ”Such Great Heights,” the landmark album is, after Nirvana’s Bleach, the second-biggest selling album in Sub Pop’s 25-year history.

“The Postal Service was a band for a generation – the soundtrack to romance, tears and friendship. More than a million people bought its first album, 2003’s Give Up… a casual collaboration – assembled via the U.S. Mail – that’s still touching hearts 10 years later.”–NPR

“Released 20 years after synth-pop was left for dead and just after ‘electronica’ had been written off amid an indie-rock revival, this 2003 gem was created by Death Cab For Cutie singer Ben Gibbard, who was just hitting his stride, with EDM maestro Jimmy ‘Dntel’ Tamborello. Full of skittering fractal beats and buoyed by cameo vocals from Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, this emotional travelogue achieved a one-off perfection… A million-some copies later, it’s a blueprint for electronic pop”–ROLLING STONE “The 100 Greatest Debut Albums Of All Time”

(DATELINE: April 9, 2013) — They’ve revealed their never before seen 2002 audition video footage at www.funnyordie.com, they’ve unveiled the previously unreleased “A Tattered Line Of String” and “Turn Around,” they’ve recounted their origin story in exacting detail at http://youtu.be/O5XtyYUTDBU… So what else can The Postal Service do but release its Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) (Sub Pop) and begin the tour commemorating that very release and occasion?

Turns out that’s exactly what they’re doing: As of its release today, Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) makes every note The Postal Service ever recorded available in one handsome physical or digital package (including a including a stunning limited 3-LP edition on red, clear and white vinyl available through subpop.com and postalservicemusic.net). And tonight in Reno NV, The Postal Service live experience–Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello plus Jenny Lewis (Jenny & Johnny, Rilo Kiley and Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds, Bright Eyes)–plays the first show of its upcoming tour.

The Postal Service 2013 anniversary tour is quite possibly the single most hotly anticipated reunion of the year-selling out theaters, clubs, even amphitheaters and arenas the world over, including the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA and New York’s Barclays Center Arena where second dates have been added by popular demand. Dates that have already completely sold out-in addition to the aforementioned first nights in New York and Berkeley-now include London, Manchester, Las Vegas, Detroit, Atlanta, Reno NV, Davis CA, San Luis Obispo CA, Pomona CA, Boise ID, Orlando FL, Kansas City MO, Columbus OH, and more to come.

The Postal Service has also confirmed that Ra Ra Riot, Mates Of State and Big Freedia will support on various dates. See below for full details.

Last week The Postal Service was revealed as one of the headliners of the sold out Sasquatch Music Festival in Gorge, WA on May 27. Additional dates will be announced as they are confirmed. Check http://www.postalservicemusic.net/ for further details as they become available.

Tickets for the newly announced dates are in sale now at http://bit.ly/PstlSrvc.

Gibbard and Tamborello will be reuniting on the road with a band fleshed out by Jenny Lewis (Jenny & Johnny, Rilo Kiley) and Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds, Bright Eyes) to celebrate the 10th anniversary and deluxe edition reissue of The Postal Service’s universally acclaimed release, Give Up.  The Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition out April 9 on Sub Pop includes the original 10-track album along with 15 bonus tracks–including the brand new songs “Turn Around” and “A Tattered Line of String,” a previously unreleased live recording, and every other official recording the band has ever released–as well as cover versions of Postal Service classics by The Shins and Iron & Wine.

Give Up was certified platinum last year just shy of 10 years from its original February 9, 2003 release. Led by the single “Such Great Heights,” the landmark album peaked at #114 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and has sold 1,067, 087 copies in the US to date. After Nirvana’s BleachGive Up is the second-biggest selling album in Sub Pop’s nearly 25-year history.

Give Up, which Entertainment Weekly called a “near-perfect” album, is the first and only full-length by The Postal Service. The album received 2003 year-end praise from an array of publications, including SPINRolling Stone and theVillage Voice “Pazz & Jop” critics’ poll. Give Up also earned “Best of the Decade” status from Pitchfork, NPR, Complex,Paste, Under the Radar, and more.

Both Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello (as Dntel) recorded albums in 2012: Gibbard’s solo outing, Former Lives, was released via Barsuk Records last October; Dntel’s Aimlessness was released this past June on Pampa Records.

About The Postal Service:

You can spend all the time and money in the world trying to craft the perfect pop-music scenario, but sometimes the stars have to align all by themselves. Even though early on the members of The Postal Service jokingly referred to “Such Great Heights” as “the hit” on their debut album, Give Up, there’s no way anyone could have predicted the eventual impact made by a mail-order album designed in a pair of West Coast bedrooms. It’s been 10 years since the little project that could from Seattelite Ben Gibbard (also known as Death Cab For Cutie’s frontman) and Angeleno Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine) emerged from seemingly nowhere and began to burrow its way into the ears of anyone who came into contact with the band’s infectious electro-pop (read more at Sub Pop).
