Paul McCartney took the crowd of 50,000 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on a magical mystery tour back through time at tonight’s historic Farewell To Candlestick: The Final Concert:
During a rarely performed rendition of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally” — the last song to be performed in its entirety at The Beatles’ August 29, 1966 final concert at the same venue — the crowd was transported back to that very same night courtesy of a collection of previously unreleased photographs by the late Jim Marshall.
The only photographer to be granted unfettered access to photograph The Beatles’ last ever concert, Marshall’s images were granted this exclusive usage by Paul for his bittersweet goodbye to this iconic ballpark. The images will next be viewable by the general public with the October 14 release of a new book on Marshall’s work The Haight: Love, Rock and Revolution(Insight Editions). The Haight… is currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com.
Jim Marshall is world-renowned as the pioneer of rock-and-roll photography. A principal photographer at Woodstock, and the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles’ last concert, he immortalized artists such as the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane before they became household names. His tools of the trade were a manual Leica camera and unlimited access to the artists. This allowed Marshall to capture some of the most iconic images in music history, and In 2014 Marshall became the first photographer ever to receive the GRAMMY Trustees Award for his body of work. Marshall passed away in 2010, and gave his iconic and inspired archive to his long-time assistant and friend Amelia Davis, who keeps Marshall’s legacy alive and thriving.
Farewell To Candlestick: The Final Concert is the latest sold out stop on Paul McCartney’s current Out There tour. As always, the marathon Out There sets feature music from the most beloved catalog in popular music, as Paul performs songs spanning his entire career – as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle. Though not a soundtrack album by any stretch, Sonic Highways shares its title with the Dave Grohl-directed eight-episode HBO series described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music and premiering Friday, October 17 at 11 p.m.. For the album and series, Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear wrote and recorded one song in each of these eight cities, delving into the local musical currents: how each region shaped these musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact those people had on the cultural fabric of their hometowns. All songs feature local legends sitting in, with every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews for the HBO series, and other local personalities who became part of the process.

Select fans were whisked away by Sleep No More‘s actors – and Spoon band members – in order receive sacraments and be “reborn”. Once sacraments were distributed and souls preserved, a curtain fell to reveal the band as they launched into a rollicking rendition of They Want My Soul‘s “Knock Knock Knock”. Spoon kept the crowd entranced and hollering through a set lasting over an hour that was packed with soon-to-be classics from They Want My Soul and other staples from the band’s catalog.
The release was preceded by the never-before-attempted Vinyl Gratification initiative where Spoon rewarded fans with an exclusive 45 RPM 10-inch vinyl for preordering the album from participating independent record stores. The program was met with rapturous participation, resulting in Vinyl Gratification materials completely selling out within the first week. Philip Selway is pleased to present a beautiful new video for “Coming Up For Air,” the lead track from his forthcoming sophomore solo album,Weatherhouse. The “Coming Up For Air” video, directed by acclaimed Spanish film collective NYSU, emits a supernatural sheen as it takes place on a hazy film set filled with actors who display the importance of perspective. The camera pans in to show everything may not be as it initially appears. Selway’s airy vocals, pulsating rhythms and use of reverb add to the surreal nature of the visuals which result in an intriguing sensory experience.
Commenting on the video, Selway says: “Good videos can make you rethink the song that you’ve written. They also shine a light on what makes the track tick. NYSU have made a visually rich and intriguing piece for ‘Coming Up For Air’ which stands up in its own right, yet feels in tune with the track.”
Selway will release Weatherhouse on October 7 though Bella Union as a follow-up to his 2010 solo debut, Familial. For this new record, Selway recruited fellow artists and former backing band members Adem Ilhan and Quinta to expand the instrumentation required to create Weatherhouse. Meanwhile, Spoon’s revolutionary Vinyl Gratification program proved to be an immediate success upon its release on July 15. All participating record stores instantly sold out of the limited edition vinyl 10-inches that were given away with They Want My Soul vinyl preorders. But fear not, participating stores – and eight additional indie retailers – are being restocked and the 10-inches featuring “Do You”, “Rent I Pay” and “Inside Out” will be available once more on Wednesday, July 30.
