Having been teased for days at http://heartisadrum.tumblr.com and during Beck’s performance last night on The Colbert Report, the video for “Heart Is A Drum” can now be viewed in its entirety athttp://smarturl.it/HeartIsADrum.

Beck also performed “Heaven’s Ladder” on The Colbert Report (exclusive video HERE), from the Beck Song Reader compilation album released today by Warby Parker/Capitol Records. Available athttp://smarturl.it/BeckSongReader, the album is an all-star collection of interpretations of the legendary Beck Song Reader – 20 Beck compositions released exclusively as stunningly illustrated sheet music in partnership with McSweeney’s – by the likes of Jack White, Jeff Tweedy, Jarvis Cocker, Jason Isbell, Fun., David Johansen, Jack Black, Juanes, and several more including Beck himself.

Directed by Sophie Muller and shot in Bergman-esque black and white, “Heart Is A Drum” finds Beck in a rural backwoods limbo, encountering figures from his past, present and possible future-including one with an uncanny resemblance to his former self as captured in 1993’s immortal “Loser” clip.

“Heart Is A Drum” is the latest single from Beck’s overwhelmingly acclaimed Morning Phase (Capitol). Still lodged in the Top 100 some 21 weeks since its February 25 release, Morning Phase has been hailed as one of if not Beck’s finest effort to date. Immediately upon the album’s release The New Yorkercommented “After listening to Morning Phase 50 times, I can’t find a single thing wrong with it… You don’t get many albums like this in your lifetime.” More recently Rolling Stone, NPR, The Los Angeles Times, Hitfix, among others, have listed Morning Phase high in their mid-year “Best of 2014 So Far” rankings.

The current Morning Phase tour has only served to multiply these accolades. See “Heart Is A Drum” live as the Beck road show resumes August 14 in Salt Lake City and continues through the fall. Dates are listed below.

PAUL MCCARTNEY ARCHIVE COLLECTION ANNOUNCE NEXT RELEASES: WINGS TO REISSUE CLASSIC ALBUMS VENUS AND MARS AND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND ON SEPTEMBER 23

MPL and Concord Music Group confirmed plans today to reissue Wings albums Venus and Mars and At The Speed of Sound as the next releases in the Paul McCartney Archive collection on September 23, 2014.

Both albums will be available in a variety of physical and digital formats. Starting with a 2-disc (2 CD) Standard Edition, the first CD will feature the original remastered album and the second CD will include bonus audio made up of material including demos and unreleased tracks. The 3-disc (2CD, 1DVD) Deluxe Edition will be housed in a hardback book featuring unpublished photographs, new interviews with Paul, material from Paul’s archives and expanded track-by-track information. The deluxe version bonus DVD will be comprised of filmed material from around the time of each release, some of which has never been seen before. The albums will also be available on special gatefold vinyl editions (vinyl editions include a download card). Digitally, Venus and Mars and At The Speed of Sound will be made available as both standard and deluxe versions – including Mastered for iTunes and Hi-Res formats.

Wings are one of the most successful acts the UK has ever produced, achieving no less than 14 US Top 10 hits and 12 Top 10 hits in the UK. Following 1973’s Band on the Run the mid ‘70s were a commercial heyday for Wings. Venus and Mars, the band’s fourth studio album was released in May 1975 ahead of the legendary Wings Over the World tour. Preceded by the US Number One single “Listen To What The Man Said,” Venus and Mars hit the Number One spot in the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide to date.  At The Speed of Sound was recorded in the midst of the same tour and released in March 1976. In the US it enjoyed the same chart success as its predecessor. Including the international smash hit single “Silly Love Songs,” the album went on to become Paul’s most successful American chart album spending seven consecutive weeks at Number One. In the UK it charted at Number Two, narrowly missing out on the top spot. Sales to date exceed 3.5 million worldwide.

As with all the Archive Collection, Paul has personally supervised all aspects of the reissues. The remastering work was done at Abbey Road by the same team who has worked on all the reissues as well as the Beatles’ catalogue.

Since launching the Paul McCartney Archive Collection in 2010, Paul has received two GRAMMY Awards for the releases. In 2012 he picked up Best Historical Album for Band on the Run and this year Wings over America picked up an award (Best Boxed or Special Edition Package) on the same night that Paul set a personal best by picking up five awards in just one night. In 2013 RAM was nominated for Best Historical Album.

Other titles released to date in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection are Band on the RunMcCartney,McCartney IIRAM and Wings over America.

The new dates, which are on sale this Friday (except where indicated below), are listed below in BOLD.

In addition to album and touring announcements, the next installment in the Pax-Am 7” series has been confirmed: “1984,” Ryan’s 10-song 7-inch homage to the halcyon days of the earliest releases from Dischord, SST, Touch & Go and their ilk, will be released  August 19th and is available for pre-order now at http://bit.ly/paxamrecords. Orders for this limited edition 7″ will ship no later than August 18thand are limited to one per customer.

“1984” is a concise, intense and completely self-contained musical statement, recorded and released completely separate from the upcoming album. THIRD MAN RECORDS INTRODUCES NEW PUBLISHING WING: THIRD MAN BOOKS

LANGUAGE LESSONS: VOLUME 1 (TMR269) BOX SET FEATURING 321-PAGE HARDBOUND BOOK, TWO VINYL LPs & MORE

Available For Pre-Order Now at Third Man Books, In Stores August 5th

LL:V1
LL:V1

At long last Third Man Records and Third Man Books are very proud to present their first commercially available book, Language Lessons: Volume I. Though the term book, in this case, may actually be a bit limiting considering what this whole package actually contains… Want to hear more? Read on.

Language Lessons is a 321 page hardbound book, co-edited by Chet Weise and Third Man’s own Ben Swank, full of contemporary poetry and prose including over 20 award winning and / or nominated contemporary poets and authors such as Dale Ray Phillips, a Pulitzer Prize nominee in fiction, C.D. Wright, a National Book Award finalist and National Book Critics Circle winner in poetry, and Adrian Matejka, a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist in poetry. Language Lessons is two vinyl LPs of jazz, psychdelic-punk, poetry, blues and pop from artists such as William Tyler, Destruction UnitKen VandermarkSampson Starkweather and more. Language Lessons is 5 pieces of frameable broadsides of poems by C.D. WrightFrank StanfordBrian BarkerJake Adam York and Chet Weise with original art from former Big Boys guitartist Tim Kerr, one-time Hate illustrator Jim Blanchard, intertwangle-ist folk artist Butch Anthony and more. That’s a lot of bang for your buck… and it all comes housed in a hard-case clothbound sleeve. Has any other record label ever created such a thing? Are we mad?!

We are not mad. As previously mentioned, LL:VI will be Third Man Books first commercially available tome and signifies a strong intent for Third Man entering the universe of publishing. Third Man Books, like Language Lessons, will be fearless, imaginative, and eclectic. We hope to be a welcome addition to what is already a very compelling and thrilling independent American literary landscape.

Language Lessons: Volume I is now available for pre-sale direct from Third Man and will be available in discerning book and record stores the world over from August 5th.

For those attending Newport Folk Festival this weekend, you’ll get the first opportunity for a glimpse into LL:V1. Join LL:V1 contributors for excerpt readings on Saturday, July 26th at the festival. Featured contributors include Zachary Schomburg, Joshua Marie Wilkinson, Janaka Stucky, Sampson Starkweather, Paige Taggart, Kendra Decolo, and Chet Weise. For more information as it becomes available, keep an eye on http://www.newportfolk.org/lineup/saturday/language-lessons and https://www.facebook.com/ThirdManRecords.

Do You

Spoon has unveiled its eerie and destructive new video for They Want My Soul‘s lead single, “Do You”. Directed by Hiro Murai, the video features a bandaged and semi-shellshocked Britt Daniel as he cruises through a city under siege…but under siege from what? The video is the 20th installment of Urban Outfitters’ UO Music Video Series. They Want My Soul will be released by Loma Vista Recordings on August 5.

At 3:30PM EST today, the band will be live-chatting with fans in a session hosted by Consequence of Sound – a chance to ask the band any and all burning Spoon-related (and non-Spoon related) questions you care to. Details of the chat session can be found here.

Vinyl preorders for Spoon’s forthcoming album were launched this week as part of the band’s Vinyl Gratification campaign with many stores selling out on day of release. The band is currently working on replenishing stock, but in the meantime, here are the details for those who may be unfamiliar with this never-before-attempted release method. Those fans who wish to preorder a vinyl copy of They Want My Soul will instantly receive a limited edition 45rpm 10-inch from participating record stores (find yours here). This 10-inch is comprised of three album tracks including “Inside Out”, “Rent I Pay” and the previously mentioned single, “Do You”. Preorders placed through the Vinyl Gratification program will be filled with a sleek 180g white vinyl copy of They Want My Soul.

“… returned to their youthful passion without losing a step… it is nice to have you back, ladies.”—THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Luscious Jackson will finally play its first show in the borough that the band”s Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser call home. The triumphant roll that began with the release of the Magic Hour album last fall continues with a November 22 date at the Bell House in Brooklyn.

Tickets are on sale Friday, July 25 at 10am EST. For more information, visit http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/639741?utm_medium=bks.

The Bell House date is the latest news in the wake of the Cunniff, Glaser and Kate Schellenbach”s Magic Hour album, released last November on the band’s own City Song label (on sale at iTunes or http://www.LusciousJackson.us). Magic Hour has seen a uniformly excellent reception including raves from ROLLING STONE (“Luscious Jackson were to New York freestyle dance pop what their online casino cohorts the Beastie Boys were to hip-hop… Welcome back, ladies”), THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (“Listening to Luscious Jackson… is like a night out hitting the clubs in New York City: a rock riff here, reggae grooves there, some sugary pop, and plenty of low end. All in all, a good time, and plenty eclectic”), and many more. Luscious Jackson’s live debut along the Gowanus is the latest live event in a run including a November 18 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, and rapturously received live shows in Philadelphia, New York City, San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles—a show that had THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER raving that the band had “… returned to their youthful passion without losing a step… it is nice to have you back, ladies.”

“fully enthralling live… a show that feels less like a collection of songs and more an immersive experience… even after the band’s final goodbye, the crowd stood in the park singing the melodic words-free chorus line like a soccer chant with passion and gratitude.”–HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“Watching a band at the top of their game, blurring the lines between musical styles…You won’t see many better live performances”–MTV

“Euphoric… Theirs is the kind of music that makes you want to wrap your arm around everyone you’re with, sing like inebriated pirates and hope that summer never ends”–THE INDEPENDENT

Having completed a hugely successful swing through Europe, the UK and beyond, Arcade Fire will bring their one-of-a-kind, euphoria-inducing, multi-stage Reflektor Tour back to North America resuming July 30 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. Among the host of esteemed guests joining the band for this next leg will be Spoon, The Unicorns, Owen Pallett, Antibalas, Tune-Yards, Constantines and Fraka.

Additionally, the legendary Akron, OH androids Devo, whose “Uncontrollable Urge” has cropped up as an occasional Arcade Fire encore, will perform opening sets to kick off Arcade Fire’s Mountain View and Chicago shows. Attendees of the band’s third night in Brooklyn on August 24 will begin their evening with an exclusive reunion performance from the pioneers who first brought alt rock to CBGB in the mid 1970s: Television.

As was the case during Arcade Fire’s first North American tour leg, Dan Deacon will be hosting between-sets dance parties guaranteed to get those feet warmed up for the main event. The festivities will be further expanded in Los Angeles for the band’s two nights at The Forum where Steve Mackey of Pulp will provide an after-show DJ set.

They Want My Soul

“I don’t know if you’ve ever been in that situation where you knew a record was going to come out at a certain point, and you waited for that day and went to the store and got it on that day. But that was something I used to do, and it was part of a process that made it kind of magical.”— SALON.com interview with Britt Daniel

The revolutionary method of vinyl album preordering is upon us. On its very first day of availability, Spoon’s Vinyl Gratification program is already selling out supplies at record stores across North America!

Developed as an incentive to encourage preordering albums from record stores, Spoon’s Vinyl Gratification initiative rewards fans for frequenting their favorite independent music retailers.

Upon preordering a vinyl copy of Spoon’s forthcoming album, They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista), at a participating record store, fans will be instantly rewarded with a limited edition 45 RPM vinyl 10-inch featuring three songs: “Rent I Pay”, “Inside Out” and the album’s lead single, “Do You”. On or after August 5, those fans who have preordered through the Vinyl Gratification program can return to their record store and get their beautiful 180g white vinyl copy of They Want My Soul.

Daniel explained further to SALON this week, “It bothered me that over and over we were giving these things to these entities that I feel don’t need a break necessarily. And I feel like the record labels and the record stores themselves could stand a break and yet nobody’s giving it to them, and I don’t know, it just seemed like a cool spin on the idea of these instant gratification things that are such a big deal these days.”

Castor, the mastermind behind a certain used Volvo ad (and later, an actual Volvo commercial), has created a video to detail the workings of Spoon’s program. Take a look here and then proceed to a participating record store to make your mark on music history.

SAN DIEGO — Paul McCartney has added another date to summer”s hottest ticket: the Out There world tour has confirmed a September 28 stop at Petco Park in San Diego – marking Paul’s first concert in the city since the Wings Over America tour passed through in 1976.

The Out There tour, as always, features music from the most beloved catalog in popular music, as Paul performs songs spanning his entire career – as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle. The set list will also include material from Paul”s most recent studio album NEW, a global hit upon its release last year.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity; in just three hours some of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music are relived; music which for many has shaped the very soundtrack of their lives. The last decade has seen Paul and his band perform in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow”s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people, and even broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul”s band of the last 10 years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show never disappoints.

The tour also uses state of the art technology and production to ensure the entire audience has the best possible experience. With massive screens, lasers, fireworks, unique video content and, of course, the best songs in the world, a Paul McCartney show is so much more than just an ordinary concert. Paul”s shows attract a multi-generational audience from different backgrounds all brought together by his music.

Tickets for Paul’s return to San Diego will be on sale to the general public Friday, July 18 at online pokies 10 a.m. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginningMonday, July 14 at 10 a.m. Padres Season Ticket Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m. Tickets will be available at www.padres.com/PaulMcCartney and all Ticketmaster locations. Suites and premium hospitality spaces will be available for purchase by phone at 619.795.5060 or by email at suites@padres.com.

“Like a kid getting a special package in the mail and opening it up with anticipation, these interpretations of songs from the Song Reader book have surpassed what I could have imagined when putting the book together. The book addressed the idea of a song in its most elemental form, letting others give it a voice. It amazes me to hear how these musicians have made the songs their own and in the process revealed that the interpretation is the living breathing soul of the piece. These interpretations have made the book something new— something better.” —BECK

The now legendary Beck Song Reader – twenty Beck compositions previously released exclusively as stunningly illustrated sheet music in partnership with McSweeney’s — will receive a long awaited traditional release on July 29, when Warby Parker/Capitol Records issues the Beck Song Readercompilation album, produced by Beck and Randall Poster, known for his music supervision work with directors Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Sam Mendes and many others. Warby Parker will commemorate the release of Song Reader by reissuing limited-edition Carmichael frames created in collaboration with Beck, this time in Black Cherry — as well as a new edition of the Song Reader book, featuring two new prints from artist Marcel Dzama.

“No one embodies the spirit of creativity and collaboration more than Beck. From the moment we heard about his Song Reader, we were eager to join forces on the project. We’re thrilled to have worked together to introduce an album and a great pair of frames,” says Warby Parker co-CEO and co-founder Neil Blumenthal.

The 20-track all-star collection features exclusively recorded versions of Song Reader charts by the likes of Jack White, Jeff Tweedy, David Johansen, Jason Isbell, Fun., Eleanor Friedberger, and several more including Beck himself.

“I was incredibly excited when Beck asked me to produce a collection of Song Reader recordings with him,” says the album’s producer Randall Poster. “Beck’s dynamic musical energy and creative passion inspired the artists — some of our favorite and greatest artists at that — to make these songs their own and render them with authority and distinction. They are both a reward and an invitation to join in on a unique and enduring song enterprise.”

The Warby Parker release of Beck Song Reader marks the first officially recorded incarnation of the project, which has already inspired interpretations from hundreds of musicians the world over. The record includes the studio-quality debut of songs previously only played live either by Beck himself or at one of the handful of Song Reader concerts staged over the last two years. The most recent of these was presented by the L.A. Philharmonic in partnership with McSweeney’s and Warby Parker at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on November 24, 2013. Described by The Los Angeles Times as an “expertly delivered and received night… another big step in Beck’s long, fascinating evolution,” the show’s highlights included Jarvis Cocker’s interpretively danced “Why Did You Make Me Care?” and Jack Black’s borderline frightening “We All Wear Cloaks,” the latter of which makes its recorded debut on the Beck Song Reader album.

The limited edition Carmichael glasses’ two-tone hue combines Beck’s two favorite colors, in a design inspired by Beck’s genre-bending music and unimpeachable personal style. Equal parts eclectic and charming, Carmichael will be available online at warbyparker.com and at Warby Parker stores and showrooms beginning July 29. The new edition of the book will be available at store.mcsweeneys.net, and at Warby Parker stores.

Warby Parker and artists’ proceeds from the Beck Song Reader album will go to 826 National, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students, ages 6–18, with expository and creative writing at eight locations across the USA. For more information, go to http://826national.org/. For every pair of frames sold, a pair will also be distributed to someone in need through Warby Parker’s Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program.
