Closing out an exceptional year at Third Man Records is a release that’s pretty near and dear to us. It should come as no surprise to the TMR faithful that Lillie Mae Rische is a complete bad-ass and an all-around powerhouse of melody. She first joined the TMR family a little over two years ago and ever since – whether onstage with Jack White and his band or in the studio – she’s been, how you say, delivering us from evil with fiddle playing so stupefying as to propel listeners into the jaws of heavenly awe. Feel me on this, y’all?
Here we have Lillie Mae Rische center stage. Her contribution to our Blue Series showcases two original songs, charming and plaintive, with the B-side hitting us with a story of hearts on the road, having to reconcile distance and desire. Meanwhile, the A-side is a gentle yet stern anthem about the sweet and sour circumstances of being alone. All in a voice that’s sweeter than peach brandy.
Joining her are some longtime Third Man contributors Carl Broemel, Dominic Davis, Jack Lawrence, and local drum god, Whip Triplet.
The 7” inch vinyl is now available for pre-order and we be made available in fine record stores worldwide on December 9th.
Digital bundle to include Paul’s original anthem from one of the biggest entertainment releases of the year Destiny plus four exclusive mixesHope For The Future
Paul McCartney’s new song “Hope For The Future” will be globally released on December8 . The song was written by Paul for the record-breaking video game Destiny, and until now has been exclusively available within the game itself. Produced by Giles Martin, “Hope For The Future”is as epic as the game, which sold more than $325 million worldwide in its first five days*.
It goes without saying that Paul McCartney has written countless hit singles, orchestral scores, electronica works, film themes, and has consistently changed the world with his music. Listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time, Paul has now added another first to his impressive list: “Hope For The Future” marks the first time that Paul has ever written specifically for a video game — one poised to become the most successful franchise of its kind.
Details of the release are confirmed today and the original version of the track from the Destinycredits will be made digitally available alongside four special mixes.
The tracklisting is as follows:
1) Hope For The Future (Main)
2) Hope For The Future (Thrash)
3) Hope For The Future (Beatsession Mix)
4) Hope For The Future (Jaded Mix)
5) Hope For The Future (Mirwais Mix)
Talking about the writing process Paul said:
“When you’re writing something like ‘Hope For The Future’, which is custom made, it is like doing a portrait for someone. You have to use your imagination and work out what they need, what they’re going to want and then what you want to give them. Then you’ve got to combine those three things into something that you still think maintains integrity. So in the game you’re a Guardian of the last city on Earth so that suggested to me the ‘hope for the future’ idea and I went from there. Then I thought it is not just a game song, this will get played outside the game so it has got to be stand alone too, you can’t have references to aliens or people will think ‘what’s he talking about?’ So it had to have its own stand alone meaning and integrity.”

For the last minute shoppers, several coveted reissues will be released on December 16. The reissues include The Kinks’ Anthology 1964-1971 (BMG/InGrooves) and four albums from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds back catalog being released by BMG: From Her to Eternity, The Firstborn is Dead, Kicking Against The Pricks and Your Funeral…My Trial.
Eleven classic Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds albums dating back to 1984’s critically-acclaimed debut From Her To Eternity are to appear on heavyweight, 180g vinyl for the first time.
Four albums will be released December 16, 2014 with the remaining titles to follow in 2015. The campaign follows the recent acquisition of the Mute Records catalogue by BMG.
Each album has been re-mastered in a process overseen by former Bad Seed and founder member, the multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey. All album artwork reflects the original release from the cover to the printed inner sleeves.
BMG Director of Masters and Product Management Didier Dehauteur said, “The Bad Seeds catalogue is a precious piece of rock history. We are determined to deliver a set of reissues which genuinely pay tribute to a seminal band.”
The following titles will be released on December 16, 2014:
From Her To Eternity – Single LP
(Original Release Date June 18, 1984)
Recorded in London Studios The Garden and Trident, From Her To Eternity marked the debut of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds after the break-up of Nick Cave’s former band The Birthday Party. Features Blixa Bargeld, of Berlin’s Einstuerzende Neubauten, on guitar. Said Cave at the time, “I don’t really think he knows how to play in the conventional sense at all. He just makes these incredible sounds.”
The Firstborn is Dead – Single LP
(Original Release Date June 3, 1985)
Album number two was recorded in Berlin. Co-produced by Flood and the band, it was rich with references to the blues and bluesmen, the American South, and especially to Elvis Presley. Soundsdescribed the album as “the most evocative blues record for years.”
Kicking Against The Pricks – Single LP
(Original Release Date Aug 18, 1986)
The band’s third album was a collection of cover versions of songs ranging from “I’m Gonna Kill That Woman” (John Lee Hooker) to “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” (Jimmy Webb) to “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart” (Roger Greenaway, Roger Cook). Said Cave, “They were all done for different reasons. Some songs were tributes…other songs we didn’t think the song was ever done particularly well in the first place. Some songs had just haunted my childhood, like ‘The Carnival Is Over’ (Tom Springfield), which I always loved.”
Your Funeral…My Trial – Double LP
(Original Release Date Nov 3, 1986)
First released as a double EP, Your Funeral…My Trial has a notable melancholy tone. Cave himself later said, “(This is) my favorite of the records we’ve done, is very special to me and a lot of amazing things happened, musically, in the studio. There are some songs on that record that as far as I’m concerned are just about perfect as we can get really – songs like ‘The Carny,’ ‘Your Funeral, My Trial,’ and ‘Stranger Than Kindness.’”
Earlier this year Paul McCartney made history when he performed the last concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, the very same stadium that saw The Beatles last public concert 48 years ago, almost to the day.
A new app launched today by Jaunt allows fans to relive the magic of that night—more accurately experience it for the first time in a completely immersive 360-degree virtual environment offering access to Paul McCartney like never before: the Jaunt VR app puts you right there in the crowd, onstage, backstage, or even right by Paul’s side in the midst of the climactic pyro, as he performs “Live and Let Die” live at Candlestick.
In addition to his obviously peerless status as a musical legend and fearless innovator, Paul McCartney has never stopped looking for new and interesting ways to reach audiences, from his work on this year’s single biggest entertainment release, the video game “Destiny,” to this collaboration with Jaunt enabling fans to experience his music and live performance in a previously unimaginable new way.
Jaunt, the technology company behind the app, is building the hardware and software to make truly immersive cinematic VR possible. This special footage of the world’s revered musician marks the launch of their first publicly available content. Jaunt is making this revolutionary experience freely available for consumers to download and view for the first time. The content is available now through Jaunt’s app on Google Play for Google Cardboard and Android Phones, and will be coming soon to Samsung’s Gear VR and the Oculus Rift.
Paul’s performance of “Live and Let Die” was filmed using state of the art technology – Jaunt’s proprietary 360 degree, stereoscopic 3D cameras and 3D sound-field microphones. Viewers will experience a completely new level of immersion: complete freedom to look in any direction and experience every moment of the performance in true stereoscopic 3D with reactive, omnidirectional audio.
“The concert at Candlestick put Sir Paul McCartney in front of 70,000 live fans, and with our technology and the launch of our app, we’re opening up this access to many more,” said Jens Christensen, CEO of Jaunt. “We’re creating a completely new medium for entertainment. This is just the first step of our broader mission to bring viewers immersive access to the latest concerts, movies, sporting events and more through virtual reality.”
“Live and Let Die” is the first of these recordings to be released by Jaunt, and it also marks the very first public release of content in Jaunt’s cinematic VR library.
Jaunt, which emerged from stealth in early 2014, delivers a completely new way to present and experience media. The Jaunt platform makes use of advanced algorithms and computational photography software to enable the creation of seamless, omnidirectional 3D experiences. The company will continue to focus its efforts on enabling top content producers to create a diverse array of cinematic VR experiences that will be available for consumers to view and download across many platforms.
In another upcoming McCartney first is the aforementioned release of “Hope,” a track Paul wrote and recorded exclusively for the end credits of video game “Destiny,” the first time Paul has ever composed for a video game.
Consumers can now download Jaunt’s cinematic VR recording of Paul’s “Live and Let Die” for Google Play. To download, visit: http://www.jauntvr.com/content

Philip Selway is excited to premiere the new video for the track “Around Again” off his stellar second album, Weatherhouse (Bella Union). The “Around Again” visuals retain the dreamy, mystical nature of Philip’s previous videos for “Coming Up For Air” and “It Will End In Tears”. The video, directed by the Spanish film collective NYSU, features a pivoting camera that follows a woman’s circuitous path as she leaves various items and poses in her wake, resulting in a completely altered setting. Watch the video here.
Having stunned the audience in studio and at home with his recent Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon performance of “It Will End In Tears,” Philip will at long last bring his solo works to life on a New York City stage with a performance at the esteemed Le Poisson Rouge on April 10, 2015. Tickets for his headlining set are available here.
Due to a family matter, Foo Fighters regrettably must postpone Friday’s appearance in Austin for their Sonic Highways screening and Austin City Limits taping.
The band sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience and promises to make it up when they return to Austin on Thursday, November 20, 2014. All passes for the original engagement will be honored.
Tonight’s Sonic Highways preview screening will go on as scheduled.
