BOB MOULD’S BEAUTY & RUIN STREAMING VIA PITCHFORK ADVANCE, ALBUM OUT JUNE 3 ON MERGE

CONAN PERFORMANCE CONFIRMED FOR JUNE 4

“SEE A LITTLE LIGHT” CONCERT SPECIAL BROADCASTING ON PALLADIA THROUGHOUT JUNE

Beauty & Ruin Cover

“The former Sugar and Hüsker Dü frontman sounds fully invigorated here…Mould rips through 12 bristling guitar-pop tracks that, at their propulsive and tuneful best, recall the classic eras of his much-loved former bands.” – ROLLING STONE

“It doesn’t feel like a stretch to say Beauty & Ruin scrapes the same eight-miles-high stratosphere as his best work with Hüsker Dü, Sugar, and under his own name…vital music from a living legend – a master class in the sort of gleaming, guitar-powered alt-rock that Mould helped to invent.” – STEREOGUM

Bob Mould’s forthcoming studio album, Beauty & Ruin, can now be streamed in its entirety via Pitchfork Advance. The album stream comes one week ahead of Beauty & Ruin‘s June 3 release on Merge Records. Pre-orders for the album already being hailed as possibly Bob’s finest solo work since the classic Workbook are live now on Merge’s website and iTunes. The first 400 LP pre-orders placed through Merge will receive the album on yellow vinyl. All iTunes pre-orders come with an instant gratification download of “Hey Mr. Grey”.

Bob Mould is also pleased to confirm a release week performance on CONAN. Bob will be the featured musical guest on the Wednesday, June 4 airing of the late night TV series. CONAN airs at 11pm EST on TBS.

Additional happenings surrounding the release of Beauty & Ruin include multiple broadcasts of “See a Little Light” on Palladia throughout June. “See a Little Light” documents the November 2011 tribute to Bob at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, where many of today’s most influential artists gathered to celebrate Bob’s legendary canon. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Ryan Adams, No Age, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady), Margaret Cho with Grant Lee Phillips, and Jessica Dobson (The Shins, Deep Sea Diver) all performed classic compositions from the Hüsker Dü, Sugar and Bob Mould solo catalogues. Fortunately, the entire evening was captured in stunning audio and high-quality video quality by filmmaker Justin Mitchell. Specific air dates and times below.

Take a listen to Bob Mould (and Fred Armisen who can teach us all how to do a mean Bob Mould impression) on Margaret Cho’s podcast “Monsters Of Talk” HERE.

Sirius XMU will also air a two hour special celebrating Bob’s history and influence. This will take place on Sunday, June 1 at 9pm EST.

ARCADE FIRE: “WE EXIST”

Arcade Fire’s video for “We Exist,” starring Andrew Garfield in a narrative that begins in a nondescript locale and concludes live on stage during the band’s second weekend headline set at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, can now be viewed in its entirety at http://smarturl.it/WeExist.

“We Exist” is a 6:18 long story of one young person’s struggle with gender identity set to the soundtrack of the second track from Arcade Fire’s Reflektor album. The band’s Win Butler has described the song as “about a gay kid talking to his dad,” specifically coming out to his straight father, and  has introduced it during recent live performances with the statement, “The right to marry anyone you want is a human rights issue.”

PAUL McCARTNEY TEAMS UP WITH NEWMAN THE ROBOT FOR HIS NEW VIDEO “APPRECIATE” & JAPANESE TOUR DATES

Paul McCartney & Newman
Paul McCartney & Newman

Paul McCartney has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the world. In recent years his videos have featured a stellar line up of guests including Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, Jude Law, Tom Ford, Sean Penn and Natalie Portman.

Today, Paul announced his first artistic collaboration with a robot. Newman, the robot, has teamed up with Paul for his new music video for the song “Appreciate”. “Appreciate” is taken from Paul’s latest studio album NEW, which was launched last year.

The video sees Newman on patrol in a museum of humans. Newman is drawn to one exhibition in particular. In a dimly lit sound studio he sees Paul McCartney sitting on a stool holding his iconic Hofner bass guitar. Paul twitches making a sound on the guitar and to Newman’s astonishment he starts to come to life as the song “Appreciate” starts up. Paul comes closer to Newman staring at him through a force field that encloses him. Newman reaches through the force field and pulls Paul out of his exhibition. As the two of them move around the museum all the exhibitions start coming to life too.

Speaking about Newman, Paul said: “I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album NEW but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for ‘Appreciate’. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse we developed the robot who became Newman.”

The video was premiered exclusively in Japan this week where Paul and his band will be performing to sold-out crowds in Tokyo and Osaka. Newman will also be joining Paul on this leg of his tour.

The video was directed by Andre Chocron and filmed in London. Newman was designed by Mervyn Millar and Ed Dimbleby for Significant Object Ltd (significantobject.com).

FOO FIGHTERS TO COMMEMORATE EIGHTH ALBUM & 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH HBO SERIES DOCUMENTING EIGHT-CITY RECORDING ODYSSEY

Foo Fighters have confirmed that the making of their upcoming eighth album–due out this fall on Roswell/RCA–will be accompanied by an as yet untitled HBO series documenting the eight-city odyssey during which the record was created.

In the series, directed by FF founder Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters tap into the musical heritage and cultural fabric of eight cities–Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York–basing themselves at a legendary studios integral to the unique history and character of each location.

One song was recorded in each city, every song featuring local legends sitting in, and every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process.

“Dave’s heartfelt passion for this project is contagious and his talent as a musician and filmmaker is undeniable,” said Michael Lombardo, President, HBO Programming. “We are excited to go on this journey with him and the Foo Fighters for this insider’s look at how regional music inspired them to create their own new music.”

Grohl’s 2013 feature film directorial debut, the universally acclaimed Grammy-winning Sound City, was a celebration of the human element in the creation and recording of music, this series is in Grohl’s words, “a love letter to the history of American music.” Each episode delves into the singular regional identity of each city-how each region shaped these musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact those people had on the cultural fabric of their hometowns-ultimately celebrating their common bond: Every artist that appears in the show, regardless of genre or locale, started as an average kid with the universal dreams of making music and making it big.

Grohl’s interviews with these musicians are integral to the show and the creation of the album as his chemistry with bandmates Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear.  Dave’s unequaled passion for both the music he creates and the music that inspires its creation once again fuels the type of honest and trusting musician-to-musican exchange that made Sound City a critical and commercial smash, one that earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as it rocketed to #1 on the iTunes documentary chart.

Premiering on the eve of Foo Fighters 20th anniversary, the FF/HBO series aims to “give back” to the next generation of young musicians.  As interviewee Buddy Guy puts it, “Everything comes from what’s come before.”

The HBO series is directed by Dave Grohl for Roswell Films, a division of the Roswell Records label that releases Foo Fighters’ music, produced in conjunction with James A. Rota, John Ramsay, and Therapy studios, and written by Mark Monroe and Dave Grohl.
