THE MARS VOLTA: NOCTOURNIQUET

SIXTH FULL LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM OUT MARCH 27 ON WARNER BROS. RECORDS

Known for such landmark releases as the gold-certified De-Loused In The Comatorium and Frances The Mute and 2008″s The Bedlam In Goliath which featured Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy winner “Wax Simulacra,”  The Mars Volta returns in epic and unexpected fashion with its sixth album: Noctourniquet which will be released March 27 by Warner Bros. Records.

While Noctourniquet was, in typical Mars Volta fashion, written by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala and produced by Rodriguez-Lopez, the 13-track album explores musical territories previously uncharted in the duo”s 20 or so years of creating music together. The spectrum of musical and emotional textures conceived and created by  Rodriguez-Lopez on Noctourniquet  ranges from the opening bombast of “The Whip Hand” to the menacing crawl of “The Malkin Jewel” punctuated throughout by hypnotic melodies and borderline electro-ambient washes, most notably in the epic “In Absentia.” The bold diversity of the new material combined with Rodriguez-Lopez”s assured producer”s hand guiding The Mars Volta”s most confident and refined performances to date make Noctourniquet an early contender for this year”s most challenging and rewarding listen.

As with previous Mars Volta efforts, Bixler-Zavala”s lyrics trace a narrative journey with a defined protagonist, this time inspired by disparate elements including “80s UK alt-rockers The Godfathers, Superman comic nemesis Solomon Grundy and the Greek myth of Hyacinthus.

Noctourniquet was performed by The Mars Volta lineup of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Juan Alderete de la Pena, Marcel Rodriguez Lopez, and Deantoni Parks.

A full track listing is posted at the band”s website. For further information, tour dates, etc. please go to:

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM: SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS

TRAILER LIVE AT

On April 2nd 2011 LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.”  SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once in a lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.

SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace and produced by Lucas Ochoa and Thomas Benski of Pulse Films (the same team that directed and produced the Grammy-nominated Blur documentary, NO DISTANCE LEFT TO RUN) and James Murphy. The film”s executive producer is Christine Vachon (I”M NOT THERE, FAR FROM HEAVEN, BOYS DON”T CRY, ONE HOUR PHOTO, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, etc.), with former LCD manager Keith Wood and The Creators Project.

SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS will receive its debut screening at this year”s Sundance film festival. For additional information and screening times, please visit .

PAUL MCCARTNEY: KISSES ON THE BOTTOM OUT FEB. 7 ON HEAR MUSIC/CONCORD

Paul McCartney confirms brand new album title and reveals full tracklisting and artwork

‘Kisses On The Bottom’

Paul’s tribute to personal favorites & two new self penned compositions out February 7th

On December 19th 2011 Paul announced that February 2012 would see the release of his brand new studio album. Scores of fans then streamed the new original track ‘My Valentine,’ many assuming it would be the new record’s title track.  While a few Twitter hints have been dropped and rumors have run rampant, Paul puts an end to speculation today, confirming that the album will indeed be titled ‘Kisses On The Bottom’.

Paul has apparently had some fun with his choice of album title—while causing some confusion amongst those who have historically subjected his every move to microscopic scrutiny (with many fixating on an anatomical interpretation!). The phrase ‘Kisses On The Bottom,’ however, actually comes from the album’s opener ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter’. Originally made a big hit by Fats Waller in 1935, the song opens with the lines ‘I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you.  I’m gonna write words oh so sweet.  They’re gonna knock me off of my feet.  A lot of kisses on the bottom, I’ll be glad I got ‘em’.

‘Kisses On The Bottom’ is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood as well as the two new McCartney compositions ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’.  With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band—as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney’s new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home.  The full tracklisting reveals that Paul has been both reverent and adventurous in his song choices.

The album artwork concept was conceived by Jonathan Schofield (Visual Director at Stella McCartney) and designed by Matthew Cooper (who has worked with artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand).  Paul was photographed by his daughter Mary McCartney for the album sleeve.

Stay tuned to Paul’s website for more exclusive album news in the coming weeks.

WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT? TOM JONES’ THIRD MAN BLUE SERIES SINGLE, THAT’S WHAT!

Jones’ Take On Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” c/w Frankie Lane’s “Jezebel” (TMR 106) Out March 5th

Duane The Teenage Weirdo Blue Series 7″ (TMR 125) Out January 24th

Vault Package #11 Available For Subscribers Signing Up Before January 31st

http://www.thirdmanrecords.com/

Third Man Records is proud to announce the most virile entry in the history of its Blue Series singles: The man, the legend himself Mr. Tom Jones laying his unmistakable voice over Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” and the Frankie Lane classic “Jezebel” (as covered over the years by the likes of Edith Piaf and Anna Calvi). Both tracks were produced by Jack White at Third Man studios and will be available on 7” and iTunes March 5th.

Right around the corner and straight outta Detroit is a new Blue Series 7” from high flying DIY electro genius and self-described weirdo, Duane The Teenage Weirdo. Pop music in Depression-era 2012 doesn’t come any more legit then in Duane’s capable hands. Both tracks, “Postcard From Hell” and “Bubblegum Encore,” are the sound of Detroit pared down to a hard beat, feral vocals, synth stabs and real dance intent which all makes Duane our second favorite Detroiter to call himself a streetwalking cheetah. The single will be available as a Blue Series 7” and via iTunes January 24th.

And lastly, the latest Third Man Records subscription-only Vault package…  #11:

2012 starts off with the label’s third and FINAL singles compilation, on three LPs pressed in Third Man’s standard three colors of vinyl: black, yellow and white–as well as the third in an annual series of fold-out posters depicting the covers of all the previous years’ TMR singles.

This quarter’s 7” is something literally from the vault: Recorded during the 1999 sessions for their self-titled debut, the White Stripes “Dead Leaves” and “Let’s Build a Home” are versions markedly different from the ones that would eventually be recorded and released on White Blood Cells and De Stijl. This piece is truly one for the fans and getting songs like these into their hands was this main reason the Vault was created.

The wild card item this quarter is a solar-reactive, color-changing Third Man Records logo t-shirt: yes, when exposed to sunlight, the color of the print switches from yellow to white, again reinforcing the THREE color scheme and complementing the triple LP set above. Finally… a reason for record collectors to venture outdoors!

The 3-LP set (TMR 133),  “Dead Leaves”/“Let’s Build a Home” 7″ (TMR 134) and three-color Third Man shirt are available ONLY to Vault subscribers–so sign up now if you want ’em as the cut-off date of January 31st is fast approaching!

JACK WHITE AND THIRD MAN RECORDS TO APPEAR ON AMERICAN PICKERS JANUARY 9

Jack drives a hard bargain with the American Pickers guys, offering personal artifacts including the actual photo booth used in The Dead Weather “Hang You From The Heavens” video in exchange for one of the most “memorable” treasures ever to appear on the show.

Paul McCartney Announces Brand New As Yet Untitled Album

Paul’s Tribute To Personal Favorites & Two New Self Penned Compositions Out February 7th

WHILE many a musician is often asked about the tunes that have influenced their songwriting, it is not a question Paul McCartney ordinarily gets to answer – until now. Paul is about to offer a glimpse into “the songs which inspired the songs” with the upcoming release of a brand new album of those standards he grew up listening to in his childhood—plus two brand new McCartney compositions:  the album, which is currently untitled, will be released on Hear Music/Concord Records on February 7th 2012.

As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years – and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. “In the end it was ‘Look, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it,” he says.

In short, Paul believes it is about time “the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on” received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics.

“When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them,” Paul explains. “I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys – I just thought the songs were magical.  And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it’s beautiful, the way they made those song’.”

Determined to approach the record in a new and unique manner, Paul enlisted the help of LiPuma and Krall and her band—who delivered ultra-high quality musicianship and were completely in tune with Paul’s restraint and feel for the music. In the studio, the recording of this album was also a new challenge for Paul who, for the first time ever, performed exclusively in the vocal booth without no instrument – no guitar, no bass, no piano – which led to a vocal performance like no other in his career.

He adds, “It was very spontaneous, kind of organic, which then reminded me of the way we’d work with The Beatles. We’d bring a song in, kick it around, when we found a way to do it we’d say ‘Okay, let’s do a take now’ and by the time everyone kind of had an idea of what they were doing, we’d learnt the song. So that’s what we did, we did the take live in the studio.”

“It was important for me to keep away from the more obvious song choices so, many of the classic standards will be unfamiliar to some people.  I hope they are in for a pleasant surprise.”

The album was recorded at the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London throughout 2011.  It also features guest musicians Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectively, on the original compositions  ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’.

The track ‘My Valentine’ will be exclusively streamed on www.paulmccartney.com to premium members for 24 hours only, from 1400hrs (GMT) today (Monday 19th December).

Full tracklisting to be announced soon.
