DAVE GROHL CLARIFIES HIS GRAMMY ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin’ with Lil’ Wayne…meeting Cyndi Lauper’s adorable mother…the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet…..much too much to recap. It really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there’s one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance…and then saying this:

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do… It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey……I’m a drummer, remember?

Well, me and my big mouth. Never has a 33 second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage as my lil’ ode to analog recording has. OK….maybe Kanye has me on this one, but….Imma let you finish….just wanted to clarify something…

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5…..I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn’t matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician’s personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and…..human.

That’s exactly what I was referring to. The “human element”. That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became “bad” things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily “fixed”. The end result? In my humble opinion…..a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.

And, unfortunately,  some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell…I’m not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really fucking hard so that I don’t have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that’s what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don’t know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that’s badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the “craft” is equally as important, I’m sure. I mean…..if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don’t give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

Stay frosty.

THE MARS VOLTA: NEW SINGLE “THE MALKIN JEWEL” PREMIERING NOW AT themarsvolta.com

NEW ALBUM NOCTOURNIQUET AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER, IN STORES MARCH 27

The Mars Volta has unveiled “The Malkin Jewel,” the first single from its forthcoming sixth album Noctourniquet (out March 27 on Warner Bros. Records), at the newly revamped themarsvolta.com. Fans can pre-order the new album while previewing “The Malkin Jewel,” also premiering today in the UK on Radio 1 as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World, and other features of the new themarsvolta.com.

On February 14, iTunes pre-order for Noctourniquet will begin with every pre-order instantly receiving “The Malkin Jewel.”

As with previous Mars Volta albums, including the gold-certified De-Loused In The Comatorium and Frances The Mute and The Bedlam In Goliath (which featured Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy winner “Wax Simulacra”), Noctourniquet was written by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala and produced by Rodriguez-Lopez. The 13-track album explores musical territories previously uncharted in the duo’s 20 or so years of creating music together. The spectrum of musical and emotional textures conceived and created by  Rodriguez-Lopez on Noctourniquet  ranges from the opening bombast of “The Whip Hand” to the menacing crawl of “The Malkin Jewel” punctuated throughout by hypnotic melodies and borderline electro-ambient washes, most notably in the epic “In Absentia.” The bold diversity of the new material combined with Rodriguez-Lopez’s assured producer’s hand guiding The Mars Volta’s most confident and refined performances to date make Noctourniquet an early contender for this year’s most challenging and rewarding listen.

Noctourniquet was performed by The Mars Volta lineup of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Juan Alderete de la Pena, Marcel Rodriguez Lopez, and Deantoni Parks.

Hollywood, Ca. February 10, 2012 -50-plus years and counting of breaking boundaries and making history and Paul McCartney shows no sign of slowing. In a historic week in Los Angeles that began with the release of his brand new album Kisses On The Bottom (Hear Music/Concord) and will culminate in his appearance at the 54th annual Grammy Awards, Paul found time for two landmarks in one day on Thursday, February 9.

First, in a ceremony that drew a traffic-stopping throng on Vine Street, Paul accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After a heartfelt dedication from Neil Young, Paul’s star was unveiled in its rightful place next to those of fellow Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (and in close proximity to Buddy Holly!).

Hours later, Paul performed the bulk of Kisses On The Bottom live from Capitol Studios streamed exclusively on iTunes. The once in a lifetime performance plus excerpts from the events of the day can be streamed on demand exclusively for a limited time on iTunes (iTunes.com/PaulMcCartney.)

Tonight Paul will receive the MusiCares Person Of The Year award for his contributions to the worlds of music and philanthropy. Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Tony Bennett, Norah Jones, Duane Eddy, Neil Young and many more will perform numbers from Paul’s unparalleled catalogue, with a finale featuring Paul himself.

Sunday night Paul will conclude this incredible week with a climactic performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, where Paul McCartney & Wings’ Band On The Run is nominated in the Best Historical album category.

iTunes Live from Capitol Studios: Paul McCartney

Free Worldwide Live Streaming Performance From Famed Capitol Studios February 9 at 7 p.m. PST Exclusively On iTunes

New York, NY – February 6, 2012 – Paul McCartney will commemorate the release of his forthcoming Kisses On The Bottom (out February 7 on Hear Music/Concord) with a once in a lifetime free streaming performance taking place live at 7:00 p.m. PST Thursday, February 9, from the famed Capitol Studios where much of the new album was created. Fans can watch the intimate concert through iTunes on their Mac or PC.

Kisses On The Bottom is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to, as well as two brand new McCartney compositions “My Valentine” and “Only Our Hearts” (which feature guest turns, respectively, from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder). Recorded with the aid of Grammy-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band–who will back Paul for the Capitol live stream event–Kisses On The Bottom is a deeply personal journey through songs that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on the family piano.

The February 9 Capitol Studios streaming event will be the first time ever that the reverent and adventurous performances of Kisses On The Bottom will be brought to life in a live setting.
