PAUL McCARTNEY: EGYPT STATION NEW STUDIO ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 on CAPITOL RECORDS

PAUL McCARTNEY

EGYPT STATION

NEW STUDIO ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 on CAPITOL RECORDS

PRE-ORDERS LIVE NOW, INCLUDING DOUBLE A-SIDE SINGLE “I DON’T KNOW”/“COME ON TO ME”

Paul McCartney invites you on a musical journey to Egypt Station, estimated time of arrival September 7, 2018 by way of Capitol Records.

Sharing a title with one of Paul’s own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013’s international chart-topping NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks just released as double A-sides–plaintive ballad  “I Don’t Know” and raucous stomper  “Come On To Me”—Egypt Station was recorded between Los Angeles, London and Sussex, and produced (with the exception of one track) by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Beck, Foo Fighters).

Of the forthcoming album’s enigmatic title, Paul says, “I liked the words ‘Egypt Station.’ It reminded me of the ‘album’ albums we used to make.., Egypt Station starts off at the station on the first song and then each song is like a different station. So it gave us some idea to base all the songs around that. I think of it as a dream location that the music emanates from.”

True to the inspiration behind its title, Egypt Station’s 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe. Between the opening and closing instrumentals “Station I” and “Station II,” each song finds Paul capturing a place or moment before transporting the listener seamlessly to the next destination. Stops along the way include an acoustic meditation on present day contentedness (“Happy With You”), a timeless anthem that would fit on virtually any album of any McCartney era (“People Want Peace”), and an epic multi-movement closer clocking in at seven minutes with a song suite structure harkening back to the days of Paul’s previous combos (“Despite Repeated Warnings”). The result is a kaleidoscopic journey through myriad musical locales and eras, yet firmly rooted in the here and now–with Paul’s singular unmistakeable melodic sensibility serving as guide.

Confirmation of Egypt Station’s release puts an end to speculation about a new Paul McCartney album that began with the whiting out of his Instagram account as Paul turned up at various landmarks in Liverpool. The capper was a June 9 surprise gig at Liverpool’s tiny Philharmonic Pub, during which “Come On To Me” was debuted alongside a set of classics spanning Paul’s career. Further details to come…

Listen to “I Don’t Know” and  “Come On To Me.”

PAUL McCARTNEY TO RELEASE ALL-NEW DOUBLE A-SIDE SINGLE

PAUL McCARTNEY TO RELEASE ALL-NEW DOUBLE A-SIDE SINGLE

“I DON’T KNOW”/“COME ON TO ME”

AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20th on CAPITOL RECORDS

Following a whirlwind week that saw his Instagram presence rebooted as he played one of the most intimate gigs of his storied career, Paul McCartney is done keeping the world in suspense: “I Don’t Know” and “Come On To Me,” will be released tomorrow as a double A-Side single.

The first tastes of Paul’s brand new studio album due out later this year on Capitol Records, the two A-sides are polar opposites: “I Don’t Know” being a plaintive, soul-soothing ballad as only Paul can deliver, and “Come On To Me” a raucous stomper that fans that first spark of chemistry into a rocking blaze.

Worldwide speculation about a new Paul McCartney album instantly reached fever pitch as his Instagram account whited out last week—only to ratchet higher as Paul was spotted taking selfies at landmarks in Liverpool the same day. The evening’s climactic event was a surprise gig at the tiny Liverpool Philharmonic Pub, during which “Come On To Me” made its live debut alongside a set of classics spanning Paul’s career.

Paul’s new album is slated for Fall 2018 release on Capitol Records. Further details will be announced shortly.

ARCADE FIRE: “CHEMISTRY” NEW VIDEO LIVE NOW

ARCADE FIRE

“CHEMISTRY”

NEW VIDEO LIVE NOW

Directed by Ray Tintori and Animated by Starburns Industries

Arcade Fire has unveiled a new animated video for “Chemistry,” from the international #1 album Everything Now.

Directed by Ray Tintori, animated by Starburns Industries (Rick & Morty, Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, Community) and featuring Tootie Tootz of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce fame, “Chemistry” expands on the song’s theme of chemical attraction, turning it into a cartoon about a dog and cat who meet and fall in love at her wedding reception, where he is working as a caterer, and she is marrying a shark.

Collaborating with Tintori–whose work ranges from videos for MGMT, Chairlift, and Moses Sumney to creating the debut film for Google’s Tilt Brush and the Aurochs sequences for Beasts of the Southern Wild — has been on Win Butler of Arcade Fire’s mind for years: “We’ve been big fans of Ray’s work since his early videos and there was talk of collaborating during The Suburbs shoot–we were going to film it in New Orleans but then it got moved to Austin at the last minute, and Ray was caught up working on Beasts of the Southern Wild. So it was very full circle to finally be working with him in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. There is a playful, carnivalesque energy to the song; to capture that by filming literally during carnival felt right.”

While the core “Chemistry” story is of an animated dog and cat (played by Ms. Tootz) meeting at her wedding reception where the dog is working as a caterer, the animated characters travel to space at one point, and after destroying the International Space Station, land back on Earth, finding themselves in the midst of the Fat Tuesday in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans.

Arcade Fire resume their Everything Now Continued world tour tonight at Ahoy in Rotterdam, NL. See below for a full itinerary of the tour, which runs through September 23 where it concludes at the Life Is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas.

SPIRITUALIZED: AND NOTHING HURT NEW ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 7th ON FAT POSSUM

SPIRITUALIZED

AND NOTHING HURT

NEW ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 7th ON FAT POSSUM

First Single “A Perfect Miracle” Streaming HERE
Video for “I’m Your Man” Viewable HERE

Spiritualized have announced news of their new studio album, And Nothing Hurt, out September 7th via Fat Possum in the US and Bella Union in the UK/Europe. Preorders are live now along with two tracks:  First single “A Perfect Miracle” and album track “I’m Your Man,” the video of which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vNrHoLS1zc.

Spiritualized have also announced select live performances in support of the album, including two U.S. dates:

Thu Oct 11 – Brooklyn NY at Kings Theatre
http://www.kingstheatre.com/
Tue Oct 16 – Los Angeles CA at The Orpheum Theatre
http://laorpheum.com/

From the opening lullaby of “A Perfect Miracle” through to the Morse Code fadeout at the close of “Sail on Through,” Spiritualized wrap layer upon layer of gloriously transcendent sound together to create a mesmerizing and cinematic collection of songs.

There are points where the waves of blissful noise are almost overwhelming – the thunderous climax of “On the Sunshine”; the spectral waltz of “The Prize”; the towering guitar solo on “I’m Your Man” – where one can imagine the studio’s speakers vibrating themselves off of the walls. Which is an incredible feat when you discover that the album was conceived and recorded almost entirely by one man – Jason Pierce, AKA J.Spaceman – in an upstairs room in his east London home. Sat in an edit suite in Whitechapel a month or so after finishing recording, Jason talks honestly about the painstaking, frustrating process of creating And Nothing Hurt.

“Making this record on my own sent me more mad than anything I’ve done before. We’d been playing these big shows and I really wanted to capture that sound we were making, but without having the funds to do so, I had to find a way to work within the constraints of what money I had. So I bought a laptop and made it all in a little room in my house.”

Whereas bedroom recording is commonplace for a generation of musicians who’ve grown up with horizon-expanding tech, Spiritualized have long used the studio as they would an extra member of the band – as a vital building block in the construction of some of the most cherished records of the modern era. This time would be very different. With no grounding in digital recording, Jason had to learn everything from scratch.

“The biggest thing for me was to try to make it sound like a studio session. But I was new to it all, I didn’t have all the short cuts people use as when they’re making records – I just sat there for weeks… for months… moving every level up bit by bit just to try to get the sounds right.”

For the listener, the nine tracks on And Nothing Hurt effortlessly replicate the scale and power of Spiritualized’s previous releases, whether it’s the sonic blowback of “On the Sunshine,” the last dime in the jukebox love letter of “Let’s Dance” or the swell of an imaginary orchestra that seems to lift “Damaged” towards the heavens as it plays out.

“With a bit of trial and lot of error, I found ways of doing something that’s quite simple if you’ve got the resources. I spent two weeks listening to classical records and strumming the chord that I wanted on my guitar. When I found something to match what I wanted, I’d sample that bit and go for the next chord and try to match that. It took weeks, trying to put together and layer convincing string sounds. But, if I’m honest, all I wanted was for someone to come and play the part and bring their own thing to the record”

Lyrically, And Nothing Hurt touches on thoughts of passing time and acceptance of one’s age – never more beautifully than on “Let’s Dance.” “I didn’t want to be fighting against my age; it’s very much about acceptance. And not with any dissatisfaction either – I’m not raging against the inevitable. I spent a lot of time thinking about the way that the songs should hold together, trying to make the narratives make sense rather than just throwing together a couple of lines that rhymed.”

During the making of And Nothing Hurt, Jason kept returning to the thought that this would be the last Spiritualized record – interviews over the last couple of years made it clear that the frustration of trying to replicate the sounds in his head were proving too much. With the record finally finished, does he feel the same way now?

“I was quite sincere about that and I still feel like it might be the case. It was such hard work. I found myself going crazy for so long. It’s not like there’s no coming back, I’m fine now… it’s just such a hard thing to do, to make a record like this on your own. It’s almost as if, if I’m not pushing myself to point of madness, it’s not going to be right. I think the biggest goal is to make something that’s worthy of all that time and effort. And the more time and effort, the bigger the goal. I knew I had to make something that was good enough that it should be made. And a massive positive about making the record is that we get to play it live. That’s always the most joyous thing; this amazing thing that seems to come right through the roof.”

The Now Now is the latest all new studio album from the World’s Most Successful Virtual Act*. Produced by Gorillaz, with James Ford and Remi Kabaka, it was recorded entirely this February at Studio 13, London and is set for release June 29th on Warner Bros. Records.

In other Gorillaz news, the band recently confirmed the musical lineup of Demon Dayz LA, the inaugural U.S. staging of their Demon Dayz festival, taking place Saturday, October 20th at Pico Rivera Sports Arena & Grounds in Los Angeles.

Headlined by Gorillaz’ only west coast appearance of 2018 and featuring special guests Erykah Badu, The Internet, DRAM and more, Demon Dayz LA promises an experience like no other: Two stages worth of special guests and collaborators from within and beyond the Gorillaz extended family, plus an assortment of surprises, attractions, exclusive merchandise and more—all combining to create an auditory, visual and physical version of the Gorillaz universe for fans to explore.

Demon Dayz LA arrives at the close of the North American leg of The Now Now Tour, which kicks off October 8th in Toronto, and makes stops in Montreal, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Chicago.

And back in the UK, Gorillaz lynchpin Murdoc Niccals–currently incarcerated at London’s Wormwood Scrubs—has launched an ingenious plan to enlist loyal fans in the #freemurdoc campaign to assist his efforts in gathering information behind his false imprisonment for smuggling… With the help of a multi-platform chatbot, concerned fans around the world can converse with Murdoc – via voice or text – to hear from the man himself on what exactly they can do to help him break out of prison to restore his rightful place in the band, alongside 2D, Noodle and Russel.
