THIRD MAN RECORDS VAULT PACKAGE #15

JACK WHITE & THE BRICKS: LIVE ON THE GARDEN BOWL LANES 1999 Live LP

JACK WHITE & BRENDAN BENSON Pre-Raconteurs Demos 7″

WHITE HEAT Whirlwind Heat/White Stripes 2002 Tour DVD

http://thirdmanrecords.com/news/view/vault-package-15

Third Man Records rings in 2013 with a trifecta of uber-rare exclusive vinyl and video delights:

The LP for this round of the Vault is Jack White and The Bricks: Live On The Garden Bowl Lanes (TMR199). Pressed on Bowling-Pin-White vinyl (of course), Live On The Garden Bowl Lanes documents the first-ever live show by the short-lived Jack White and the Bricks. Featuring Jack White on vocals and guitar, his future fellow Raconteur Brendan Benson on guitar, Kevin Peyok (the Waxwings, the See-See) on bass and Ben Blackwell (the Dirtbombs) on drums, the band gigged for only a few short months in 1999. Focusing mainly on covers and White-penned tracks that had yet to have been appropriated by the White Stripes, this live show took place on White’s 24th birthday, July 9th, 1999, with the Bricks sharing a bill with the Greenhornes. The stage itself was situated on lanes 11-14–yes, the actual bowling lanes!–of the legendary Garden Bowl in Detroit. The longest continually-run bowling establishment in North America, the Garden Bowl, along with the Gold Dollar, was also the de facto home of the then-bustling Detroit garage rock scene. The final song of the night, a blistering cover of Michigan’s ’60s garage legends ? and the Mysterians’ “Ain’t It a Shame” is to “a girl who has to go get surgery soon”… a heartfelt dedication Jack sent out to band mate Meg White prior to her tonsillectomy.   The show was recorded to four-track reel-to-reel in lane ten by an engineer who, although forgotten to time, left his imprint on the recording with a few track cut-outs and slight audio imperfections. These mild flaws notwithstanding, the vocal performance is extremely fierce and the show captures all four musicians at the height of the Detroit garage rock scene playing with unbridled energy.

Tracklist:
Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
Isis (Bob Dylan)
Do
Same Boy You’ve Always Known
The Union Forever
Now Mary
Black Jack Davy (traditional)
I Threw It All Away (Bob Dylan)
Ain’t It a Shame (? and the Mysterians)

Drawing from that same time period and the same collaboration-happy times this Vault package also features the pre-Raconteurs Jack White and Brendan Benson Demos 7”  (TMR198). Recorded at Benson’s East Grand Studios in his Detroit home in May of 2004, all the signifying parts of the classic “Steady, As She Goes” are existent and there, but it would take the incomparable touch of Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler to get the song to its classic state that fans know and love from the Raconteurs. On the flip side is a full-band orchestration of Jack and Brendan nailing “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” in 1999 a full two years before it would appear on the White Stripes’ White Blood Cells album, and in a much different state. This single serves as a wonderful document of the germinations of what would become the fruitful songwriting partnership between White and Benson in the Raconteurs.

The bonus item this go-round is a behind-the-scenes tour travelog film entitled “White Heat.” Shot and edited by Brad Holland (Whirlwind Heat) the film follows the Heat and the White Stripes on their European tour during the winter of 2002. Backstage tomfoolery, onstage pranks, the Louvre, brief insight into the malaise that is life on the road… it all culminates in a previously unseen live performance by Whirlwind Heat of “The Big Three Killed My Baby” with Jack White as featured vocalist. Packaged in a splendid digital versatile disc, this is definitely a side of the White Stripes you have never seen before along with explosive and unseen footage of Whirlwind Heat in their prime.

Tracklist:
The White Stripes – Jimmy the Exploder
Whirlwind Heat – Black
The White Stripes – I’m Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman
Whirlwind Heat – Tan
The White Stripes – Death Letter
Whirlwind Heat – Brown
The White Stripes – I Fought Piranhas
Whirlwind Heat with Jack White – The Big Three Killed My Baby

Park City, UT – January 2, 2013 – Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and Park City Live today confirmed the live debut of Grohl’s Sound City Players January 18 during the city’s world famous film festival. The concert will feature core musicians and special guests from Grohl’s Sundance Film Festival® selected film SOUND CITY.

Ticketing information as well as a complete list of performers will be announced shortly.

“The film SOUND CITY showcases the most talented group of musicians in the world and we are thrilled they chose to celebrate the documentary at Park City Live,” said Kathryn Burns, CEO of Park City Live. “The evening will be spectacular and we look forward to seeing who will join Dave Grohl and the Sound City Players onstage.”

SOUND CITY, the film, was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years. SOUND CITY will make its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival®. The official trailer can be seen now at http://soundcitymovie.com.

The film’s soundtrack, SOUND CITY–REAL TO REEL, is a collection of original music created specifically for the film and this companion record. Preceded by currently available first single “Cut Me Some Slack”–performed by Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear–the film and album also features contributions from such legendary artists as Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Rick Springfield, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Grohl’s bandmates from both Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel) and Nirvana (Krist Novoselic), Jim Keltner, Rami Jaffee, Alain Johannes, Chris Goss, Jessy Greene, and more.

During the largest film festival in the country, Park City Live (formerly Harry O’s) is traditionally the most sought after venue for parties and live events.   The space, situated directly on Main Street in Park City, annually plays host to the most prestigious musical performances.  Park City Live is located at 427 Main Street, Park City, Utah. JACK WHITE’S BLUNDERBUSS TOP SELLING VINYL ALBUM OF 2012

Third Man Records in conjunction with Columbia Records is proud to announce that Jack White’s Blunderbuss is the biggest selling vinyl album of 2012 according to Nielsen Soundscan’s vinyl charts with over 33,000 copies sold.

Knocking The Beatles’ Abbey Road” off the top spot (a position it had held the previous three years), Blunderbuss sales are the highest for a new album (not a catalog album) since Soundscan began specifically tracking vinyl in 2008.

White is currently nominated for three Grammys from Blunderbuss, including Album of the Year.

JACK WHITE NOMINATED FOR ALBUM OF THE YEAR GRAMMY

Three Nominations Total As Blunderbuss Nabs Album of the Year and Best Rock Album Noms, and “Freedom at 21” Receives Best Rock Song Nod

Six-time Grammy winner Jack White has been nominated in three categories in the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards, including the evening’s highest honor, the Album of the Year.

In addition to Album of the Year,  Blunderbuss is also nominated for Best Rock Album, while “Freedom at 21” has been nominated for Best Rock Song.

The three new Grammy nominations, in addition to White’s previous 15 nominations, bring his career total to 18. White has previously earned six Grammys for his work with the White Stripes and the Raconteurs. This is his second Album of the Year nomination, the first having been the White Stripes’ Elephant in 2003.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT on February 10th, 2013.

The three new Grammy nominations round off an exceptional year for Jack White, beginning with the first U.S. #1 album of his distinguished career, as Blunderbuss debuted at the top of the charts in the U.S., UK, Canada and Switzerland.  Blunderbuss was also supported by a rapturously received world tour featuring all-male backing band The Buzzards and all-female backing band The Peacocks. At press time, the album has just begun to tear up Best of 2012 lists, including being named MOJO’s #1 album of the year.

JACK WHITE ISSUES STATEMENT CORRECTING NME MIS-QUOTE: “I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT HER MUSIC OR QUESTIONED THE AUTHENTICITY OF HER SONGS IN ANY WAY.”

Jack White has issued the following statement to correct an excerpt from his upcoming cover story in British Esquire that was taken completely out of context–and actually edited to change its original meaning–in an NME.com news post.

The original quote referred to the state of image-based celebrity in general was twisted by the NME who changed the original quote, tacking the words “Lady Gaga’s music” on to the original quote–words Jack never actually said.

White commented in full:

I’d like to address the recent tabloidesque drama baiting by the press in regards to Lady Gaga. I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way. I was in a conversation about the drawbacks of image for the sake of image, and that it is popular nowadays to not question an image in front of you, but only to label it as “cool” or “weird” quickly and dispose of it.  I don’t like my comments about Lady Gaga’s presentation being changed into some sort of negative critique of her music.  If you’re going to try to cause drama, at least get the quotes right.  I think journalists should also be held accountable for what they say.  Especially publications like the NME who put whatever words they feel like between two quotation marks and play it off as a quote.  maybe somebody with more lawyers can take them to task, but I’ll just use the internet and twitter instead.   I also think that kind of tabloid drama encourages artists to not express their opinions in the press, and instead give polite soundbites that don’t stimulate thought about creativity and the consumption of art in its many guises. Peace to lady gaga and I fully congratulate and compliment her on her championing of gay rights issues and the momentum it’s given to help create change.

Thank you.

Jack White III
