BOB MOULD: WORKBOOK 25

25th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION OUT FEBRUARY 25, 2014

FEBRUARY 27 “25 YEARS OF WORKBOOK” NOISE POP PERFORMANCE TO BE FOLLOWED BY SIX DATE COMMEMORATIVE TOUR MARCH 1-8

When the intense and inhumanly prolific career of the legendary Hüsker Dü went supernova in 1988, Bob Mould all but went into self-imposed exile.

Mould would re-emerge the following year with his first solo album–the incredibly impassioned and personal Workbook.

While recognized from day one as an astonishing guitarist, as well as a master of pop songcraft discernible even through the ear-splitting din of Hüsker Dü classics like Zen Arcade and New Day Rising, Mould’s compositions and performances on Workbook plumbed emotional depths and hit musical heights few expected. Instant classics like “Wishing Well” and “See A Little Light” would remain live staples of Mould solo sets for decades to come.

On February 25, 2014 Omnivore Recordings will commemorate the 25th anniversary of this iconic work with the deluxe 2-CD 2-LP Workbook 25. In addition to the original album’s 11 tracks, the first CD adds “All Those People Know,” originally issued as the B-side of the single “See A Little Light.” The second CD is Bob’s complete 1989 performance at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro. 13 of the 17 tracks are previously unissued from this mythical show, which features music from the then two-week old Workbook, as well as Hüsker Dü favorites and a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson’s classic “Shoot Out The Lights.” Workbook 25 will also make the album available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, pressed on 2 LPs for sonic superiority. The vinyl edition will include “All Those People Know” as well.

Pre-orders for Workbook 25 can be placed at
http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/records/bob-mould/

Workbook 25‘s release will be followed in short order by a previously announced “25 Years of Workbook” set February 27 at the Noise Pop festival in San Francisco and a six-date run of select, intimate dates where Bob, along with long-time bassist Jason Narducy, will be performing selections from Workbook as well as other songs in his catalog that sit nicely alongside this album.

The itinerary is as follows:

Fri February 27 – San Francisco – Great American Music Hall (Noise Pop Festival)
Sat March 1st – Chicago – Old Town
Sun March 2nd – Chicago – City Winery
Tues March 4th – Minneapolis – The Women’s Club
Wed March 5th – Washington DC – 9:30 Club
Fri March 7th – New York – City Winery
Sat March 8th – New York – City Winery

For tickets, additional information etc., visit individual show pages as hyperlinked in the above itinerary.

Originally released May 2, 1989, Workbook is a singular statement of renewal.  It has proven an inspiration to a generation of musicians ranging from Dave Grohl to Ben Gibbard. Ryan Adams describes the album as “the sound of the internal and the subconscious, of dream, of regret, and of a silence that was lingering.”

And the folks at the Grammys must agree with the critics, nominating …Like Clockwork for Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, plus “My God Is The Sun” for Best Rock Performance. Meanwhile, we weren’t exaggerating about those Best of 2013 notices, which include:

“Homme combines menacing riffs and glammy refinement, sounding like Bowie reborn as a winking dark lord of the underworld… the king of Queens still has the best hard-rock falsetto of his generation.”–ROLLING STONE #6 Best Albums of 2013

#8 Album of 2013–AMAZON

“Queens of the Stone Age¹s sixth album may be their first for an indie label, but they¹re still making huge and bombastic music that sounds like it was built for arenas… a sleazy, strutting vibe that somehow manage to be both knowingly ironic and totally sincere.”–BUZZFEED #20 Album of 2013

#18 Album of 2013–CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“The nightmare carousel grinds back into motion. More real, raw and direct than ever before”–CRAVE #1 Album of 2013

“Josh Homme’s vocals have never sounded better, easily traveling from detached cool to fiery rocker and back again.”–NEWSDAY #8 Album of 2013

“Six years was definitely worth the wait for Queens of the Stone Age fans. Sure .. Like Clockwork is chock full of special guests like Dave Grohl, Elton John, Trent Reznor and Alex Turner among others, but this is one case where the music overshadows the names. ‘My God Is the Sun’ and ‘I Sat by the Ocean’ were released as singles, but … Like Clockwork is a true album listening experience in a singles era and well worth taking in from front to back. … Like Clockwork sits atop
our Top Rock and Metal Albums of 2013.”–NOISECREEP #1 Album of 2013

“For those who still believe rock-and-roll should be slimey, sinister stuff.”–WASHINGTON POST #9 Best Pop Singles of 2013

BROKEN BELLS DEBUT OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR “HOLDING ON FOR LIFE”

Otherworldy Tale of Star-Crossed Lovers Stars Anton Yelchin and Kate Mara

AFTER THE DISCO RELEASE DATE MOVED TO FEBRUARY 4TH

“After the Disco is Broken Bells’ catchiest set yet, augmenting the duo’s psych-pop sound with late-night grooves and sleek synths”-ROLLING STONE

Broken Bells, the musical partnership consisting of James Mercer and Danger Mouse, has released the new official video for After the Disco’s lead single, “Holding On For Life.”

“Holding On For Life” is comprised of scenes from Part One and Part Two of the band’s collaborative featurette with The Creators Project, also titled After the Disco. The single-length visual creation follows protagonist Oliver (Anton Yelchin) as he navigates a truly out-of-this-world party and encounters some twists along the way. Additional insight is provided from the viewpoint of Oliver’s extraterrestrial love interest, Helen (Kate Mara), as she confronts the age-old tragedy of heartbreak on the dance floor.

The band’s sophomore full-length album, After the Disco, was originally slated for January 14th but will now be available on February 4th, 2014 on Columbia Records. Mercer and Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) will embark on a tour supporting the new record beginning in early spring. A listing of confirmed dates can be viewed below.

Third Man Records Releases 3 New Sun Records Reissues

Hot off the presses at United, Third Man Records’ next trio of Sun Records reissues is ready to make its way onto your turntable. This is the second installment of their ongoing partnership with Sun (the first (http://thirdmanrecords.com/news/view/sun-records-reissue-series), including The Prisonaires, Johnny Cash, and Rufus Thomas), with each release remaining faithful to its original issue. We’ve replicated the classic logo and label design and coupled it with a custom sleeve that employs the rooster that Sun founder Sam Phillips regretted losing when the label stopped pressing 78’s and moved exclusively to 45’s. One of the first releases to be pressed as a 45 by Sun during this transition is the first 7″ included in this set, D.A. Hunt’s “Lonesome Old Jail” b/w “Greyhound Blues.”

D.A. Hunt’s “Lonesome Old Jail” b/w “Greyhound Blues” TMR-224 (http://thirdmanstore.com/featured/greyhound-blues-b-w-lonesome-old-jail)

Daniel Augusta Hunt, better known as Junior Hunt, was born in Munford, AL in 1929. On or around March 11th, 1953, Hunt recorded these two songs at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis and they were released in June of that year. For over 50 years, these songs were believed to only exist in 78 rpm form, until a copy pressed as a 45 rpm 7″ single turned up in Minnesota. This only known copy was sold on eBay in 2010 for $10,323. This marks the first legitimate release of Hunt’s material on a 7″ record, and both songs are outstanding examples of the heartbreaking, desolate nature of the solo bluesman accompanying himself on guitar and borrow heavily from the template set by Lightnin’ Hopkins. Hunt was arrested in Memphis in 1958 for stealing a saxophone and died in May 1962 in Phoenix, AZ.

Roy Orbison and the Teen Kings “Rockhouse” b/w “You’re My Baby” TMR-225 (http://thirdmanstore.com/featured/greyhound-blues-b-w-lonesome-old-jail-1)

Most likely recorded in June of 1956, “Rockhouse” is a prime example of quintessential, undiluted rockabilly. While Roy and the Teen Kings’ stint with Sun would be brief, the sheer power unleashed on these tracks is palpable. Most folks are only familiar with Orbison’s perfected pop orchestrations recorded for Monument Records in the ’60s, but his roots were firmly planted in the dusty West Texas sound, were influenced heavily by Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, and remain equally important as the work of both.

Jerry Lee Lewis “Great Balls of Fire” b/w “You Win Again” TMR-226 (http://thirdmanstore.com/featured/greyhound-blues-b-w-lonesome-old-jail-2)

Like the Golden Gate Bridge, hot dogs, Wrigley Field, Converse All-Stars, and Jack Daniels, “Great Balls of Fire” is of the uppermost echelon of cultural exports America has ever produced. If you don’t already know this, it’s okay…you can buy this single now and no one will be the wiser. The Killer at his finest.

Purchase all three as a bundle (http://thirdmanstore.com/featured/sun-records-reissue-bundle-2-d-a-hunt-roy-orbison-jerry-lee-lewis), or individually on our Sun Records Reissue page. The limited edition SUN RAY ™ versions of these singles will be available at a future date with location TBA.

BANDOFHORSES.COM

“This setting offered Bridwell a chance to show off his genuine vocal abilities… Bridwell shares this skill with his bandmates, who surprised us with big, round, multi-part harmonies… brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash.”–NASHVILLE SCENE

Men with cool girlfriends and wives, rejoice! Band of Horses has just armed you with the perfect Valentine’s Day gift: Acoustic at The Ryman, a 10-song virtual greatest hits set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the Band of Horses catalog, recorded at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013, to be released February 11, 2014 on Brown Records via Kobalt Label Services. In addition to standard digital and CD versions, Acoustic at The Ryman will be available on 180 Gram Vinyl as well as a high quality 24-bit 96k WAV version. Standard digital, CD and vinyl versions will be available for preorder with bonus tracks at bandofhorses.com this week.

Having captured this two-night stand’s worth of singular performances that the NASHVILLE SCENE said “brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash,” Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there. Using the latest hardware from DSD recorder manufacturers Mytek, Band of Horses mixed the record in the band’s hometown haunt of Charleston Sound. As a result, Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman is one of a mere handful of non-Classical/Jazz albums mixed and mastered in the DSD format, capturing the ragged magic of an unforgettable performance in dangerously pristine quality.

“The game plan was to keep it wild and expressive like the show while capturing it with highest resolution available,” says the band’s Bill Reynolds.  “The electricity in The Ryman was off the charts. If that makes it to the listener, then we’ll consider this a success.”

The album’s release will be commemorated by a 13-date run of special acoustic performances, commencing on the its February 11 street date at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and concluding March 5 at–where else?–The Ryman itself.

Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman was mixed down to DSD through Mytek convertors and mastered from DSD to DSD by Bob Ludwig At Gateway using the Mytek 8Z192 ADDA. The recording was transferred from DSD to 180 Gram Vinyl by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab.

METRIC REVEAL NEW VIDEO FOR “LOST KITTEN” VIA YOUTUBE

© Justin Broadbent

Less than a month after revealing a complex display of collapsing worlds for the video to Metric’s most recent album title-track “Synthetica,” the band debuts the colorful and flamboyant video for “Lost Kitten.” Watch it here.

The MuchFACT-funded video was directed by Sammy Rawal and and shot over two days in Mexico City. “Lost Kitten” tells a gorgeous story of an unusual search for home. It follows acclaimed ballroom dancer/actor Sheldon McIntosh (otherwise known as Tynomi Banks, the name he goes by when performing in drag in his native Toronto) and showcases Rawal’s hyper-stylized approach in the use of bold color and unique choreography.

“Lost Kitten” re-imagines the archetype of a hero’s journey, as Sheldon searches for his house mother – an “angel.”  Sheldon’s massive presence is amplified with a sequin jacket and kitten heels as his mysterious pilgrimage leads him through Mexico City into the canal maze of Xochimilco on a flat-bottomed trajinera. He reaches his destiny, delivering an epic vogueing performance to celebrate his reunion with his house mother.

“Lost Kitten” was the track that helped launch the innovative new Synthetica app in mid-November. The iPad, iPhone and iPod touch interactive song experience brings both Synthetica and Synthetica Reflections (the recently released companion album) to fans and allows them to remix, filter and sequence songs as they see fit. Users can change instruments and their speeds and turn tracks on or off to create their own Metric-inspired musical creations. Download the app for free via http://smarturl.it/metricapp.

Metric continues to tour, with dates currently in Malaysia and the Philippines, the band will round out December 2013 in Australia and New Zealand. See further details at: www.ilovemetric.com.

PAUL McCARTNEY: Something NEW

A RARE GLIMPSE INTO THE CREATIVE LIFE OF THE LEGENDARY ARTIST TO PREMIERE ON VIACOM’S HI-DEF MUSIC NETWORK PALLADIA THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5TH

© 2013 Mary McCartney / MPL Communications

PAUL McCARTNEY: Something NEW is an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look into the creative life of the most successful artist in music history. Viacom’s hi-def music network Palladia will  premiere the one-hour program on Thursday, December 5th at 9:00 PM ETVH1 Classic will also air the special on Friday, December 13th at 9:00 PM ET/PTSomething NEW features incredible live and backstage footage shot around the world during his amazing run of shows in 2013 and documents the creation of Paul McCartney’s recently released album NEW. Rapturously received upon its October release, NEW has rightfully earned some of the best critical notices of Paul’s solo discography, including Rolling Stone placing it high in their Top 50 Albums of 2013 and raving “As Macca understands better than almost anyone, rock & roll is fueled by a hunger for good times and an ageless exuberance.”

Directed by Don Letts, whose credits include the GRAMMY-winning The Clash: Westway to the World, the program also integrates intimate footage of the actual recording process along with vivid memories and incisive reflections of Paul and the album’s star-studded production team.

There was no particular plan for Paul McCartney’s sixteenth studio album. The initial intention was to go in and demo with a handful of producers, and see who was the right fit for the full album. There is Paul Epworth, architect of Adele’s monstrously successful 21 and Mark Ronson, known for his work on Amy Winehouse’s classic recordings. And close to the family, there is Giles Martin and Ethan Johns, both celebrated producers in their own right and both sons of men renowned for their prominent roles in Paul’s previous works. “I did a lot of work with Giles’s Dad, George, in Beatles days; Glyn Johns worked with us on Let It Be and Wings stuff,” Paul says in case anyone needed reminding.

Chronicling yet another peak into Paul McCartney’s legendary career, Something NEW is a rare glimpse into his incomparable artistry, his creative process and the incredible impact his music has all over the world.
