THIRD MAN BOOKS TO PUBLISH THE TRUTH IS WE ARE PERFECT BY JANAKA STUCKY

AVAILABLE APRIL 14

Janaka Stucky

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2015. NASHVILLE, TN –– Third Man Books is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of The Truth Is We Are Perfect (April 14, distributed by Consortium; $14.95, ISBN 978-0-9913361-1-1), the debut full-length collection of poems by Janaka Stucky and TMB’s first single-author title.

“Stucky’s verse has the power of the best East European poets — some of his poems seem to be perfect, magnificent, and instantly anthologizable. He is a forceful, cogent, incisive phrase-maker.” – Bill Knott

Janaka Stucky is the publisher of Black Ocean as well as the annual poetry journal, Handsome. He is the author of two chapbooks: Your Name Is The Only Freedom, and The World Will Deny It For You. His poems have appeared in such journals as Denver Quarterly, Fence and North American Review, and his articles have been published by The Huffington Post and The Poetry Foundation. He is a two-time National Haiku Champion and in 2010 he was voted “Boston’s Best Poet” in The Boston Phoenix.

Stucky will go on a 30-city national tour to promote the book, including dates at the AWP Conference in Minneapolis, Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City, and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

“When Third Man Books released our first literary publication Language Lessons: Volume I, the anthology included, naturally, an ex-mortician named Janaka Stucky alongside writers who moonlighted as bartenders, taco chefs, and software developers, or were Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalists such as C.D. Wright, Adrian Matejka, and Dale Ray Phillips, or were punk rock progenitors like Richard Hell and Tav Falco,” said Third Man Books editor Chet Weise. “For Third Man Records and Third Man Books, poetry is another genre of music, and that Janaka Stucky is one of our favorite writers should be no surprise.”

Check out Janaka Stucky reading his poem “The Art of Loss Is A Lost Art” recorded live and straight to 7” vinyl via Third Man Record’s Record Booth.

Third Man Records was founded by Jack White in 2001. Third Man Records’ physical location opened in Nashville in 2009 and quickly evolved from a music label into a complete in-house hub for art-making and dream-chasing. Third Man’s mission is to support the creation and distribution of any and every form of expression, from music to poetry, comedy to film. In this spirit, Third Man Books was established in 2014 to further explore the music of language.

Third Man Books has previously published Language Lessons: Volume I, a vinyl record and print box set anthology. Forthcoming titles include Pain: The Board Game by Sampson Starkweather and Hidden Water by Frank Stanford (special edition, in collaboration with Copper Canyon Press).

Jack White is honored to accept this year’s GRAMMY award for Best Rock Performance for “Lazaretto,” the title track from his 2014 album Lazaretto (Third Man/Columbia). Jack and his own Third Man Records also hauled in GRAMMY gold for The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Vol. 1 (1917-27), for which Jack served as art director. The Paramount set won Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.

These wins bring Jack’s career GRAMMY tallies to 11 wins and 29 nominations.

Lazaretto was released in June to rampant critical acclaim. The album’s sole vinyl configuration, the wildly innovative ULTRA LP, shattered decades-old vinyl sales records. It sold 40,000 units in the first seven days upon its release making it the fastest selling vinyl album ever. Additionally, the Lazaretto vinyl format sold a total of 86,707 copies by the end of 2014, resulting in Jack claiming the title of highest one-year vinyl sales during the Soundscan era.

Holy Guacamole!

To the students and staff of University of Oklahoma:

Jack White would love to thank all the concert attendees at his performance at the University of Oklahoma. The crowd was incredible and Mr. White played an extensive two and a half hour show for them. The students who helped organize the event were wonderful. Playing in, and for, the people of Oklahoma is one of Jack White’s favorite tour stops. At no time did Jack White or White’s management say that we would never play there again, that is untrue.

The incidents with the OU Daily student newspaper reporting the financial terms of the show, the private tour rider information, along with unsolicited photographers from their staff were unfortunate, unprofessional, and very unwelcoming. The show was one of many on this tour directed at playing for university students in their own environment. And the band were all completely thrilled with the performance and the crowd.

Incidentally, the most important function of a rider is that it lays out optimal technical specifications to ensure the audience has the best experience possible. For that, Jack hires a team of very qualified touring professionals who write the rider and attempt to execute a professional and pleasant experience for all involved. Part of that is making sure that the tour personnel of about 30 people plus the local venue staff are fed. Contrary to what some believe, Jack doesn’t write the rider nor make demands about his favorite snacks that must be in his dressing room. We’re not even sure he likes guacamole but we do know that the folks who work hard to put on the show do enjoy it.

(By the way, now that’s it out there, we recommend you try Lalo’s guacamole recipe. It’s delicious.)

We hope those present for Mr. White’s performance are able to maintain their good memories from the experience and he looks forward to seeing them again soon.

Sincerely,

Monotone Inc.

(Jack White’s management)
