FOO FIGHTERS: WASTING LIGHT DEBUTS AT #1 IN TWELVE COUNTRIES

235,000 Sold Domestically First Week As Seventh Album Becomes First FF Album To Debut #1 U.S.

Foo Fighters’ seventh album has become its first to hit #1 in the band’s native U.S., selling 235,000 in the week since its April 12 release via Roswell/RCA–more than double the week’s #2 seller (Adele) and more than the combined sales of the three other Top 5 debuts (Alison Krauss, Paul Simon, Mana).

Wasting Light debuts at #1 in eleven other countries–including the UK where it ends Adele’s 11-week run atop the albums chart, and Australia and New Zealand where it has had the biggest first week digital album sales in both country’s chart histories.

Wasting Light’s twelve #1 chart entries double the six international #1s scored by its predecessor Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace in 2007. In addition to becoming Foo Fighters’ first #1 album in their native U.S., Wasting Light has debuted at #1 in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Singapore.

In addition to the stellar sales story, Wasting Light has generated some of the most positive critical notices of Foo Fighters’ 16- year career. In a four star Rolling Stone lead review, David Fricke called Wasting Light “the best Foos album since the first two,” while Us Weekly hailed the album as proof that “rock is not dead,” while People’s four star lead review lauded the Foos’ “undiminished intensity,” and Entertainment Weekly awarded it an A- summing up “Here’s the miracle, though: Foo Fighters never feel like a backward-looking band. Light is a muscular rock & roll throwdown, featuring the Foos delivering exactly the kind of catchy, pummeling anthems they’re known for, with total disregard for the whims of the masses.”

Foo Fighters are currently in the midst of a whirlwind tour that has seen the theatrical and televised premiere of their documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, and that will take them from the garages of contest-winning fans to the headline slots of virtually every major summer music festival the world over–and will include a sold out 130,000 capacity July 2-3 headline engagement at Milton Keynes Bowl as well as a string of midwestern U.S. arena  headlining gigs.

PAUL MCCARTNEY’S UP AND COMING TOUR

First U.S Show of 2011 Confirmed

June 10 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

Having played some three dozen shows to over 1,000,000 fans over the course of 2010, Paul McCartney’s record-smashing Up and Coming Tour will make its first U.S. stop of 2011 on Friday, June 10 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

The announcement of Macca’s return to Las Vegas comes nearly two years to the day from the now-legendary April 19, 2009 performance that christened The New Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and was received with unanimous rapture by media both local (“the concert of a lifetime”–LAS VEGAS CITYLIFE; “Hair-raising. Spine-tingling. Maybe I’m amazed”–LAS VEGAS SUN) and national (“Macca signatures… still have the power to raise gooseflesh”–USA TODAY; “The energy at The Joint was like being at Bruce and U2 combined… The night was truly spectacular and took this fan on an emotional journey”–HITS).

McCartney’s triumphant return to Vegas June 10 at the MGM Grand can safely be predicted to feature some nearly three hours of the world’s best loved and most known music, with hits, deep cuts and surprises spanning his unrivalled career, from The Beatles, Wings, solo material and The Fireman’s critically acclaimed album Electric Arguments.

As on his Live 2009 tour and Up and Coming’s 2010 run, McCartney will be backed by the combo the LAS VEGAS SUN called “his best band since, well, the Beatles”: Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica, backing vocals), Rusty Anderson (guitar, backing vocals), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums, backing vocals) and Brian Ray (guitar, bass, backing vocals).

In 2010 Paul performed over 30 Up and Coming Tour dates across North America, South America and the UK. In addition to overwhelming levels of critical acclaim wherever the band played, last year saw many career firsts for Paul. These included rocking The White House in front of President Barack Obama and his family in June when Paul was made the first ever British recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize For Popular Song.  Paul returned to the White House again in December (where even the President joked about Paul becoming a regular there!) to be awarded with a Kennedy Center Honor.

Paul ended 2010 with a December 11 visit to Saturday Night Live in New York City followed by a career landmark first ever performance at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater on December 13 and three intimate homecoming shows in the UK.  He played the smallest club show of his career at London’s legendary 100 Club to just 300 people, which made headlines as far as China.  The final two shows were at the Hammersmith Apollo and at Liverpool’s O2 Academy.  Both shows broke venue box office records.

THIRD MAN ANNOUNCES WHITE STRIPES VAULT PACKAGE

Live In Mississippi Double LP,  “Signed DC”/“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” 7-inch, Under Moorhead Lights All Fargo Night DVD

Available Exclusively To Vault Members

New Members Must Register By End Of April To Qualify For This Package At www.thirdmanrecords.com

Third Man Records is excited to announce  an upcoming Vault package documenting three decidedly different eras of the White Stripes.

First is Live in Mississippi, a recording of the White Stripes’ final live concert from July 31st, 2007 in Southaven, Mississippi. Presented in crystalline audio quality and spread across 2 LP’s pressed on 180-gram vinyl, this  recording is (arguably) the band at the top of their game. With the local geography looming large on their minds, the set list is decidedly heavy on the blues and features covers of songs by Robert Johnson, Son House and Leadbelly. The rest of the set includes songs from all six of the White Stripes’ studio albums and the show is offered in its entirety.

This quarter’s 7-inch features some of the White Stripes’ very first recordings. The a-side is a haunting, stark version of “Signed DC,” a cover of the band Love’s original from its self-titled 1966 debut. The flipside is a breathtaking rendition of the Otis Redding classic “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.”  Recorded in Detroit in September of 1997 a mere two months after the Stripes’ live debut, this single provides a heretofore unheard era of the band. Although their debut single “Let’s Shake Hands” wouldn’t be released for another eight months, this recording shows how fully-formed the general idea, aesthetic and approach of the White Stripes was from the very start.

The final component of this collection is a DVD entitled Under Moorhead Lights All Fargo Night. Recorded at Ralph’s Corner Bar in Moorhead, Minnesota on June 13th, 2000, this previously unseen footage captures the band immediately following the release of their sophomore album De Stijl on what was their first extended bout of touring across the United States. Performing for only a handful of people, the show is heavy on the band’s earlier material with a spirited cover of Iggy Pop’s “I’m Bored” being of particular excitement and note.

The package is available exclusively to Vault members. New members must register at www.thirdmanrecords.com by the end of April in order to qualify for it.

JERRY LEE LEWIS TO PERFORM LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS IN NASHVILLE FOR RECORD STORE DAY ON APRIL 16

Third Man To Commemorate RSD 2011 With Singles From The White Stripes, Karen Elson, and  Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi’s ROME

Rock & Roll icon Jerry Lee Lewis will perform a special one-off live concert on Saturday, April 16th at Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, TN.  The show will be recorded direct to analog tape at the Third Man complex in downtown Nashville, with Jack White producing, as with all the Third Man recordings.  Lewis’ live show will then be pressed and packaged locally at United Record Pressing just down the street from Third Man and will be sold at the label’s retail outlet within weeks, reminiscent of the spontaneous releases of Lewis’ early career. It has been over half a century since true American original Jerry Lee Lewis first rocketed to the top of America’s pop, country and R&B charts with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Great Balls of Fire.” While those iconoclastic performances still define the essence of rock ‘n’ roll for millions, The Killer himself continues to thrill audiences around the world with his unique, scorching blend of rock, blues, country and gospel–and will no doubt do so at Third Man, backed by a stellar band of Steve Cropper (guitarist of Booker T & The MGs and Stax catalogue acclaim), Jim Keltner (drummer for all four Beatles’ formative solo efforts, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more) and Jack Lawrence (bassist for The Raconteurs, Greenhornes, Loretta Lynn and The Dead Weather).

Tickets will be $30 and are on sale tomorrow, 12 noon Tuesday, April 4th, at the Third Man store front at 623 7th Avenue South in Nashville and online at www.thirdmanrecords.com. Doors will open 4pm and the show will begin at 5pm on Saturday, April 16th.

Jerry Lee Lewis’ sure to be historic set will be the culmination of Third Man’s Record Store Day festivities which begin Saturday, April 16th at 11:30am, during which The Third Man Rolling Record Store as well as the label’s storefront outlet will be selling the following four incredible Record Store Day vinyl offerings:

“Let’s Shake Hands” b/w “Look Me Over Closely”
The much-awaited reissue of the White Stripes first-ever release from 1998. This pressing corrects a channel inversion and audio glitch present in the 2002 reissue by manufacturing from the original pressing plates from 1998. Quantities on Record Store Day will all be on a custom red vinyl with black whisps while subsequent re-pressings will be on black vinyl. Says Jack White, “We finally got the right tone of red on the front cover. I’ve been waiting 13 years for that.”

TMR-089
The White Stripes
“Lafayette Blues” b/w “Sugar Never Tasted So Good”
Unavailable on vinyl since 2001, this is the reissue of the White Stripes 2nd-ever single originally released in 1998. Record Store Day quantities will be on a custom white vinyl with black whisps while subsequent repressings will be on black vinyl.

TMR-090
Karen Elson
“Vicious” b/w “In Trouble With the Lord”

Features Elson’s inimitable take on Lou Reed’s solo classic “Vicious” coupled with a captivating outtake from her “The Ghost Who Walks” LP. Copies pressed on black vinyl with a standard picture sleeve will be available at a later date.

TMR-093
Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi present ROME starring Jack White and Norah Jones
“Two Against One” b/w “Black”
