MAGIC HOUR OUT NOVEMBER 5 ON CITY SONG

“The great and deeply underrated Beasties-affiliated ’90s funk-pop crew, are back together, and they still have this unfakeable New York cool.”–STEREOGUM

“NYC funk-pop luminaries Luscious Jackson return with a vengeance now with ‘Show Us What You Got,’ a concise, highly torqued, instantly clap-along-able tune to which one can squeeze the last precious drops of summer. It’s a perfect combo of punchy, swerving rock and nimble electro. I’ve played it 11 times already and haven’t even begun to tire of it.”–THE STRANGER

Having recently confirmed the November 5 release of Magic Hour, their first album 14 years, Jill Cunniff, Gabrielle Glaser and Kate Schellenbach, collectively known as Luscious Jackson, now announce their first live shows in over a decade: November 23 at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer and December 7 at Webster Hall in their native New York City.

Tickets are on sale now at:
http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/380867?utm_medium=bks (Philadelphia)
http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004B32FBA742EB (New York City)

Produced by Jill and Gabby (with an assist from old friend Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz on the track “So Rock On”) and released on the band’s own City Song imprint, Magic Hour is preceded by the track “Show Us What You Got,” now the subject of a video directed by longtime friend of the band and Breeders bassist Josephine Wiggs. Luscious Jackson’s unique and streetwise blend of punk, funk, and the various musical and cultural styles of its native NYC emerged via Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label with the 1992 Village VoicePazz & Jop Best EP winner In Search Of Manny. Debut album Natural Ingredients was released on Grand Royal/Capitol in 1994, as the band embarked on that year’s Lollapalooza tour as well as an arena tour with R.E.M, saw the record’s single “Here” featured in the film and soundtrack Clueless, and appeared on Saturday Night Live. Produced by Daniel Lanois, Luscious Jackson’s sophomore album Fever In Fever Out dropped in 1996. Featuring the smash hit “Naked Eye,” it went gold and established the band as a household name everywhere from Gap ads to Jeopardy! questions. Keyboardist Vivian Trimble left the band following the conclusion of a world tour supporting Fever…making album number three, 1999’s Electric Honey (featuring the single “Ladyfingers” and its Tamra Davis-directed video), the band’s first as a trio and last before they called it a day in 2000. The hiatus was first broken in 2006, but it wasn’t until early 2012 that http://www.pledgemusic.com/artists/lusciousjackson went live and the first music from the forthcoming record was unveiled in the form of the track “Are You Ready?”

Additional live dates, updates, etc. will be announced as they are confirmed. For further information, stay tuned to:

BECK: “Gimme” STREAMING ON YOUTUBE

DOUBLE 12″ & DIGITAL SINGLE ON SALE NOW

“Gimme,” the third standalone single Beck’s released this year, is available now at Beck.com.

Once again featuring the unmistakable artwork of Mamma Andersson, the physical version of “Gimme” is a double 12″: Side A features the regular length vocal and instrumental versions of the track, Side B has an extended-length remix, and Side C and Side D contain two halves of a 30-minute extended edit of the track.

Along with the single’s release on Beck’s website, “Gimme” is also able to be embedded via the following code and is now streaming at http://youtu.be/dwn4tK5ySNU.

Embed code: <iframe width=”480″ height=”360″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/dwn4tK5ySNU“frameborder=”0” allowfullscreen></iframe>

“Gimme” is preceded by two other singles that Beck released earlier this summer: “Defriended” which prompted ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY to rave “Despite the title, Beck is ready to be your BFF again… with his excellently spaced-out stand-alone summer single,” and “I Won’t Be Long” which moved ROLLING STONE to exclaim “Best news of the summer? Beck’s comeback is officially in full swing.”

Beck has been anything but idle prior to this “comeback”: Currently hard at work one not one but two new albums, Beck has been on a non-stop creative tear since December of 2012, when he released his “Song Reader” book featuring sheet music for 20 unreleased songs.  The project has since taken a life of its own, with musicians from across the globe recording their own interpretations of different songs and uploading them onto the internet. Past that, Beck has performed (and will continue to perform) special shows that include eclectic lists of co-conspirators putting their own stamp on the compositions. Following that, Beck reimagined David Bowie’s classic “Sound + Vision” with a hand-selected 160-piece orchestra…culminating with a groundbreaking interactive 360-degree filming of a live performance of the track.

In addition, Beck has been performing select acoustic and full band electric shows dotting the globe and receiving some of the best live reviews of his storied career. Beck also helped to curate artist Doug Aitken’s traveling “Station To Station” tour featuring dozens of leading underground artists and musicians creating site-specific “happenings” as part of a cross-country train tour. He will perform a custom-created piece at the tour’s stops in Barstow and Los Angeles CA, in September 24 and 26 respectively. See http://stationtostation.com/ for more information.

Beck will round out 2013 with a handful of festival appearances. See below for a list of currently confirmed shows and, as always, remain vigilant.

09/24/13 – Barstow, CA – Station to Station
09/26/13 – Los Angeles, CA – Station to Station
10/20/13 – San Francisco, CA – Treasure Island Music Festival
10/26-27/13 – Las Vegas, NV – Life Is Beautiful Festival
11/09/13 – Sao Paulo, Brazil – Planeta Terra Festival

SEASICK STEVE: HUBCAP MUSIC

SECOND FULL LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM FOR THIRD MAN OUT OCTOBER 8

http://www.thirdmanrecords.com/

Wielding his Morris Minor guitar fashioned out of two hubcaps and garden hoe, Seasick Steve will release his second full length studio album for Third Man Records–titled (what else?) Hubcap Music–on October 8.

Seasick Steve is indisputably a living legend, and is recognized as such the world over–particularly in the UK where he has received four gold and one platinum records, sold out the likes of the Royal Albert Hall and and the Manchester and Hammersmith Apollo theaters, appeared on national TV, been nominated for multiple Brit Awards, played the Glastonbury and V Festivals, and shared the stage with the likes of John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl. In 2011, Steve released You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, his first full length album for Third Man Records.

Hubcap Music kicks off with “Down On The Farm,” which Steve debuted live at last year’s Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands and is one of several tracks on the record to feature John Paul Jones on bass. Jones also contributes mandolin, Hammond organ and more to the record, while other Hubcap players include Jack White on “The Way I Do” Luther Dickinson on “Home,” and Dan Magnusson holding down the beat as he does for Steve’s live shows.

Paul worked on the album with producers Paul Epworth, Mark Ronson, Ethan Johns and Giles Martin.

Commenting on the process, Paul said: The original idea was to go to a couple of producers whose work I loved, to see who I got on with best – but it turned out I got on with all of them! We made something really different with each producer, so I couldn’t choose and ended up working with all four. We just had a good time in different ways.”

METRIC ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL U.S. HEADLINING DATES DURING ARENA TOUR WITH PARAMORE

Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott-Key a/k/a Metric can count themselves among the hardest working acts in the modern era of independent music. It’s virtually impossible to argue otherwise.

Metric has been touring the world relentlessly since the 2012 release of critically-acclaimed fifth studio album Synthetica (MMI/Mom+Pop). For nearly 2 years now, they have played on some of the most hallowed stages across the globe to throngs of adoring fans–and there is still no break in sight: Following the recent announcement of a massive arena tour as special guests of Paramore, Metric will now be adding a run of headlining U.S. dates. Tickets will go on sale over the weekend. See below for full list.

What the critics are saying about Metric:

“Cognizant and self assailing, these Toronto rockers take stock of their stage fright and lovelorn neuroses over spirited New Wave synth beats.” – NEW YORK TIMES

“muscular rythms tether spun-sugar synthesizers to Earth, while Emily Haines’ vocals toe the line between vulnerability and world-weariness. The effect is of a lucid dream world…” – ROLLING STONE

“Metric’s Emily Haines is one of the most captivating frontwomen on the scene today.” – CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

” extended guitar riffs and detours into solos still impressed, as did Haines’ ice-cold vocals…” – LOS ANGELES TIMES

“It was clear by the band’s dedication to the material that rock was alive and well.” – MIAMI HERALD

“There is nothing–I repeat, nothing–Metric singer Emily Haines can’t do. She sings, she shreds a guitar, she slams a piano and she has her audience leaping on the balls of their crud-stained feet. This is what being a rock star and bringing the party looks like.” – CHICAGO RED EYE

“Massive hooks abound, lyrics break the 19th wall (“Youth Without Youth”) and choruses go skydiving (“Breathing Underwater”). All the while, Metric never take their eyes off the target: total pop majesty.” – ORLANDO WEEKLY

“Infectious rock swelling with wry political ardor” – ELLE MAGAZINE

Jill Cunniff, Gabrielle Glaser and Kate Schellenbach, collectively known as Luscious Jackson, will return on November 5 with Magic Hour.

Produced by Jill and Gabby (with an assist from old friend Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz on the track “So Rock On”) and released on the band’s own City Song imprint, Magic Hour is Luscious Jackson’s fourth album and first full-length offering of new material since 1999’s Electric Honey.

“When we were making the new album,” Jill commented, “we felt like we did when we were making our first demos. We were just smiling and laughing all the time because we rediscovered a musical connection we all really loved and missed.”

Reports of Luscious Jackson’s reunion and the forthcoming album were confirmed when the band decided to gauge public demand for a new record by partnering with PledgeMusic.com–offering fans the opportunity to fund the sessions via pledges ranging from a basic $10 album download to a $10,000 house concert. Response was fast and furious, with pledges surpassing 100% of the band’s goal within 48 hours. Pledges are still being accepted for remaining packages at http://www.pledgemusic.com/artists/lusciousjackson.

In addition to the album announcement, the band has also shared their new song, “Show Us What You Got,” at www.youtube.com/embed/XGtHTsbxEfw.

JACK WHITE APPEARS AS SPECIAL GUEST AT 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF MEXICO CITY’S FERMATTA MUSIC ACADEMY

IS GRANTED FIRST HONORARY DEAN TITLE IN SCHOOL’S HISTORY, AS WELL AS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Jack White made a special trip recently to Mexico City to appear at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Fermatta Music Academy in Mexico City on August 22, 2013.

None of the 150+ students or the local media in attendance were aware that Jack would be appearing at the ceremony until, after a short speech by Fermatta National Council President Professor Georgia Carrera, he was introduced at the event by the internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Elan.

Jack addressed the Fermatta Master Class with a speech that touched on topics including his earliest days as a musician, the support and encouragement of his parents,  the various people with whom he created music in his formative years in his hometown of Detroit, his progression from the drums to the guitar and other instruments and the factors that shaped his writing and performance skills along the way. Jack’s presentation also extolled the importance of spontaneity,  spiritual connection to musical instruments, and knowledge and skills such as harmony, reading or playing techniques in all aspects of making music–especially in finding one’s unique musical voice or mode of expression.

“The sense of being a musician”, White said at one point, “is making art, and I do not care whether it is solo or as part of a collective project. At all times I seek to express myself, and different circumstances of my life could also become multiple creative and stylistic channels… I seek to communicate my experience through the specific art I chose as a way of expression.”

The Academy also awarded Jack White with a Lifetime Achievement Award and the title of Honorary Dean, the first recognition of its kind granted by Fermatta in its 20 year history, at Fermatta Fest.

The Fermatta Music Academy is dedicated to providing the highest quality in professional music education in Latin America. As one of the leading music schools  in Latin America, Fermatta is the only music school in Mexico offering eight Bachelor degrees, six postgraduate Master degrees and two Doctorate degrees in contemporary music that is recognized by the Mexican Government’s Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). The Fermatta Master Class Series is a compilation of life lessons molded into a practical guide to the creation and business of music. The program is offered at Fermatta’s music schools in Guadalajara and Mexico City.
