MONKEY: JOURNEY TO THE WEST

Chen Shi-Zheng, Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett’s Extraordinary Music Theater Collaboration To Run Throughout LINCOLN CENTER FESTIVAL 2013, JULY 6–28

New York, NY, March 27, 2013 – Nigel Redden, Director of Lincoln Center Festival, today announced the  2013 Festival’s line-up, which runs from July 6 through 28, 2013. Single tickets go on sale on April 8 for the festival, which will unfold in six venues on and off the Lincoln Center campus. There will be a total of 62 performances by artists and ensembles from ten countries.

Opening the festival is Monkey: Journey to the West, an extraordinary music theater collaboration based on the classic Chinese folktale “Journey to the West” which dates to 1592.  Conceived and directed by internationally renowned opera and film director Chen Shi-Zheng, with music by Damon Albarn, lead singer of Blur, and design and animation by award-winning artist Jamie Hewlett, who, with Albarn, created the virtual band, Gorillaz, Monkey: Journey to the West will run throughout the festival with 27 performances in the David H. Koch Theater.

A theatrical spectacle, Monkey: Journey to the West follows the fantastical trek undertaken by a monk who travels from China to India seeking the Buddhist sacred scriptures.  On his journey through an enchanted world, led by the irrepressible Monkey King, the monk and his magical animal companions have many adventures, both comical and challenging.

Damon Albarn’s score features washes of electronic sounds, brass fanfares, electronic percussion, and Chinese pop melodies.  Jamie Hewlett’s designs, animations, and eye-popping costumes, are influenced by Japanese animé. And Chen Shi-Zheng’s thrilling vision transforms classic Chinese martial arts, circus acts, and acrobatics. Together, the three collaborators bring a dazzling, boundary-breaking approach to this timeless Chinese epic.

Commented Mr. Redden, “For its 18th edition, Lincoln Center Festival continues on its adventurous path with radically different ways of looking at similar subjects, new music from diverse traditions, and stagings as varied as their subjects. The Festival, as it has done since its start, again showcases the work of essential artists exploring their art compellingly.”

Tickets: Tickets are on sale to the general public starting April 8. Advance sales to Friends of Lincoln Center are from March 27 through April 7. For more information and to buy tickets visitLincolnCenterFestival.org or go to the Avery Fisher or Alice Tully Hall box offices, or call CenterCharge, 212-721-6500. Tickets for Monkey: Journey to the West are also available at the David H. Koch Theater box office.

Programs, artists and ticket prices are subject to change.

Monkey: Journey to the West is a music theater piece based on a classic Chinese folktale “Journey to the West” which dates to 1592. It is conceived, written and directed by Chen Shi-Zheng. The composer is Damon Albarn, best known in the U.S. as the singer/songwriter in the band Blur.  The designer/animator is Jamie Hewlett, who, together with Albarn, created the virtual band, Gorillaz*.

Over the course of this 100-minute, fantastical journey, the monk Tripitaka, travels from China to India, facing many challenges while searching for the sacred Buddhist scriptures.  The mischievous Monkey King leads Tripitaka and his animal companion protectors, including a pig and a horse, in a series of perilous and comic adventures and misadventures.

The dazzling production combines elements of music theater, bold and stunning animation, and performances by Chinese vocalists, martial artists and the Jiangsu Yancheng Acrobatic Company. Damon Albarn’s original and compelling score uses washes of electronic sounds, brass fanfares, electronic percussion, and Chinese pop melodies. Jamie Hewlett’s designs, animations, and eye-popping costumes reference the world of Japanese animé.

Monkey: Journey to the West created a sensation when it premiered at the first Manchester International Festival in England in 2007.  It was then performed at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and at Spoleto Festival USA, followed by performances at the Royal Opera House in London.

Singer/songwriter/producer Damon Albarn is the recipient of four Brits, two Ivor Novello Awards and a Grammy Award. His second opera Dr Dee, co-created with Rufus Norris, premiered at Manchester International Festival in 2011. In addition to his work with Blur and Gorillaz, Albarn has released a number of recordings, including Mali Music (2002), The Good The Bad and The Queen (2006), Monkey: Journey to the West (2007), Rocket Juice & The Moon (2012) and Dr Dee (2012). He has also produced music for Gorillaz, Amadou and Mariam, written music for film soundtracks, and most recently co-produced Bobby Womack’s current album The Bravest Man in The Universe. Albarn formed Africa Express, a collective of African and Western musicians in 2007, and toured the UK with them aboard a train last September as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Creator of comic book series Tank Girl and co-creator of Gorillaz, Jamie Hewlett has forged a distinctive visual style and a unique place in British pop culture. Tank Girl was his first major commercial success. Hewlett also conceived the visual concept behind the several-million-selling, multi-award-winning virtual band Gorillaz, which won him the Design Museum’s Designer of the Year Award in 2006. Other projects include the Bafta award-winning titles for the BBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Chen Shi-Zheng directed the epic Peony Pavilion for Lincoln Center Festival 99 and subsequently staged three other productions for the Festival: The Night Banquet, 2002; The Orphan of Zhao, 2003; and My Life as a Fairytale, 2005. His other opera credits include Monteverdi’s Orfeo with English National Opera; Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for the Spoleto Festival USA; Mozart’s Così fan tutte at Aix-en Provence Festival; Miss Fortune at the Royal Opera House in London; and Nixon in China for Theatre du Châtelet in Paris. His first film, Dark Matter, won the Sundance Film Festival’s Alfred P. Sloan Award. For Festival 2013, he is also directing the chamber opera, Matsukaze (Wind in the Pines) by Toshio Hosokawa.

POKEY LAFARGE SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT THIS JUNE ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

Record Release Party/Direct To Acetate Session June 1 at the Third Man Records Blue Room

Third Man Records is happy to announce a new partnership with one of their favorite musicians out there working today, Pokey LaFarge. Pokey and his band bring a focus and energy to the American Roots genre with infectious original material that sits at the crossroads of early jazz, country blues and western swing. With his effortless charisma and distinctive charm, Pokey has crafted a genre all his own–and one that extends well beyond the music alone.

Pokey’s next full length LP / CD (TMR 206), titled simply Pokey LaFarge (and produced by Old Crow Medicine Show frontman Ketch Secor), will be released in June–the perfect time for Pokey’s sun-blessed riverboat style. Look out for a single from the album, “Central Time,” to be released ahead of the full length in May.

BOSNIAN RAINBOWS ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF DEBUT ALBUM

OUT JUNE 25 ON SARGENT HOUSE

bosnianrainbows.com

“‘Turtle Neck’ shimmers with wavy, lush guitars and unhurried percussion before shifting to sprawling textures and morphing tempos. It cuts loose in the second half, turning into a spacey post-hardcore assault of jagged chords and gut-punching drums.”–ROLLING STONE

“Bosnian Rainbows is certainly more democratic, but the group’s music crackles with just as much unpredictable intensity… At its rhythmic heart are drummer Deantoni Parks and keyboardist Nikki Kasper… Teri Gender Bender harnesses a wide-ranging energy with her style and delivery that recalls Kate Bush, Damo Suzuki and even a young Geddy Lee… It’s a lineup that only a creative intellect as feverish as Rodriguez-Lopez could hope to wrangle… primed for mind-bending twists galore.”–TIME OUT NEW YORK

Teri Gender Bender, Nicci Kasper, Deantoni Parks and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, known collectively as BOSNIAN RAINBOWS, will release their self-titled debut album June 25 on Sargent House.

The album will feature the previously unveiled tracks “Torn Maps” and “Turtle Neck”–which can be heard at:

https://soundcloud.com/sargent-house/bosnian-rainbows-torn-maps

https://soundcloud.com/sargent-house/bosnian-rainbows-turtle-neck

… as well as nine other original Bosnian Rainbows compositions. The complete track listing is:

1.    Eli
2.    Worthless
3.    Dig Right In Me
4.    The Eye Fell In Love
5.    Cry For You
6.    Morning Sickness
7.    Torn Maps
8.    Turtle Neck
9.    Always On The Run
10.  Red
11.  Mother, Father, Set Us Free

Many if not all of the above will be familiar to those who caught the band on its recent run of U.S. headline dates, shows that generated raves including:

“While Rodriguez-Lopez may be happy to describe the act as ‘a four piece, very stripped down affair,’ the combination of his energetic, frenzied playing style coupled with Teri Gender Bender’s ferocious stage presence is nothing short of electrifying.”–METROMIX

“a hard-rocking group of vets ripping through songs while sounding as fresh as a gleaming spectrum of color over the bleak streets of Sarajevo.”–CHICAGO INNERVIEW

“Rodriguez-Lopez’s uncanny ability to mutate his flailing notes into luscious symphonies coupled with front-lady Teri Gender Bender’s ‘unique’ stage presence gives Bosnian Rainbows a certain grace on the front lines of the battle for the preservation of today’s music.”–LISTEN ASHEVILLE

Bosnian Rainbows have just returned from their March 15 appearance at the Festival Vive Latino at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium and one show supporting with Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Guadalajara–with whom they’ll meet up again in May for shows in Berlin and Paris. Other confirmed U.S. engagements at present are May 25 at the Neon Desert Festival in El Paso, TX, to be accompanied by a few yet to be announced Texas club dates. Bosnian Rainbows have been on the road consistently since August 2012, touring extensively in Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and on the west coast, making a U.S. festival debut at last September’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, and more recently completing the aforementioned February headline tour.

Further live dates will be announced as they are confirmed.

PORNOGRAPHY "7 MINUTES IN HEAVEN" DEBUT 7-INCH ON PAX-AM TO BE RELEASED ON RECORD STORE DAY

thebandpornography.com

Leah Hennessey, Ryan Adams and Johnny T. Yerington, collectively known as Pornography, will add to the deluge of Record Store Day vinyl, when they release their seven song debut 7-inch “7 Minutes In Heaven” April 20 on PAX-AM.

The origins of Pornography the band take about as long to recount as “7 Minutes In Heaven” takes to listen to: Adams and Yerington, whose C.V. includes drumming and co-writing credits on the former”s 2003 album Rock N Roll, had a chance encounter with Hennessey at her (sort of) workplace that quickly led to her unknowingly auditioning for their band The Finger. By the close of a 2-hour session that went incredibly well, it was decided this would be a new band entirely–one she then named Pornography–the three of them were well on their way to writing and recording “7 Minutes In Heaven” and another EP and album”s worth of material.

“I met Ryan and Johnny in a manic trance of a weekend,” Hennessy recalls.  “I told Ryan I wanted to make sad bastard music and the next day he asked me to come sing in his and Johnny”s punk band, which is when we wrote and recorded the entirety of 7 minutes in Heaven.  We never give ourselves more than a few minutes to write the songs so we can”t really afford to censor ourselves or be less stupid.”

“7 Minutes In Heaven” lead track “Last Nite at the Opera” can be streamed/embedded here:

“7 Minutes In Heaven” was recorded at the East Village Recording Center. It was produced by Gus Oberg, who is being pressed into service as the band”s bassist when they start playing out (Adams plays bass on the studio recordings). The complete track listing is:

Iggy and the Stooges have just unveiled “Burn,” the first full taste of the all-new studio album, Ready To Die, out April 30 on Fat Possum.

The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the Iggy and the Stooges logo–the immortal 1973 proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power–Ready To Die finds Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott “Rock Action” Asheton reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time in 40 years, with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass. “Burn” opens the record in suitable fashion, doing the legacy of its predecessor proud with guitar pyrotechnics recalling those halcyon opening salvos of “Search & Destroy,” a sublime vocal paean to the goddess of beauty, and a relentless rhythmic thud that anchors and propels the proceedings.

Iggy and the Stooges have unveiled the initial coordinates of the Ready To Die live assault: On March 13 in Austin, Texas, Iggy and the Stooges will burn a swath through the annual SXSW Festival, with a one-off show at House of Vans at the Mohawk presented by Fat Possum. The Austin show will be the public’s first chance to hear any of Ready To Die played live–and U.S. fans’ last chance to see Iggy and the Stooges before they return to American stages this summer following a slew of overseas dates.

“Burn” can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/fatpossum/iggy-and-the-stooges-burn/.

Third Man Records is as excited as they are proud to announce a once in a lifetime pairing of two of modern music’s leading ladies, as Brittany Howard and Ruby Amanfu join forces for the ”I Wonder” b/w  ”When My Man Comes Home” Single (TMR 201).

The new single features the Grammy-nominated Alabama Shakes frontwoman teaming up with the Third Man family member who first caught our ears on Jack White’s “Love Interruption” for two reinterpretations of boldly contrasting source material: Side A features their take on ”I Wonder,” originally performed by Rodriguez, subject of the Oscar-winning Searching For Sugar Man, while side B finds Howard also picking up her acoustic guitar as the two sing their version of “When My Man Comes Home,” originally recorded by Memphis Minnie, the immortal composer of “When The Levee Breaks” among others.

The single also features Dominic Davis on electric and upright bass, Daru Jones on drums, Cory Younts on piano, Ikey Owens on keys and Hammond B3 and Fats Kaplin on electric guitar, lap steel and mandolin.
